QBs to monitor in the 2024 class for Michigan State football

Michigan State is sitting in a good spot with several gunslingers in the 2024 recruiting class

It is never too early to start thinking about what quarterback Michigan State might land in the 2024 recruiting class. Quarterback is obviously the most important position on the field, and it is imperative that the coaching staff restocks the position year over year.

Michigan State’s offensive coordinator and QB coach Jay Johnson has made some great headway thus far with several top quarterbacks in the 2024 class, as he knows how big of a year it will be to land a top QB.

Take a look at what QBs Michigan State has been pursuing in the 2024 class:

Nebraska QB talks recruitment, Clemson, what ‘definitely stands out’ about the Tigers

The Clemson Insider caught up with a standout signal-caller from the Cornhusker State who impressed Clemson offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter with his performance at the Dabo Swinney Camp earlier this summer.

Bellevue West High School (Bellevue, Neb.) quarterback Daniel Kaelin – a 6-foot-3, 195-pound rising junior in the 2024 class – recently spoke with TCI as he got set to start his season, which kicks off tonight against Creighton Prep (Omaha, Neb).

“I think this summer and offseason has gone really good,” he said. “Last year ended in the semis. We thought we had a really good team that could’ve went the whole way, so I think that’s something we used as motivation this offseason. But we’re past that now. We’ve been working really hard. Especially these last couple weeks and in camp, been seeing a lot of improvement. So, I think we’re in a really good spot right now and ready to get this season started.”

Playing last season as part of a quarterback rotation, Kaelin threw for 700 yards and five touchdowns with no interceptions while helping Bellevue West to a 10-2 record in 2021.

As he approached his junior campaign, Kaelin’s focus was geared more toward the mental aspect of football rather than the physical side of the game.

“Right now, I think coming closer to the season, I think really just my preparation, more of the football IQ side is really the biggest thing that I’m trying to hone in – I would say as far as execution of plays and the more mental side of the game,” he said. “Because a lot of the offseason is when you’re doing hard training, even in the summer, is training your body to be at the peak athletic performance that you could be and then just training your arm. So I think right now the biggest thing that I’m focusing on in my game is just knowing our playbook inside and out, being an extension of my coach on the field for my teammates and having the highest possible execution on the field.”

The No. 4 prospect in the state of Nebraska regardless of position according to Rivals, 247Sports and the 247Sports Composite, Kaelin has collected a double-digit list of scholarship offers that includes Arizona State, Duke, Florida State, Kansas, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Rutgers and Vanderbilt.

The recruiting process isn’t Kaelin’s primary focus right now, with most of his attention on his team and season, though he expects to have to juggle football and recruiting more come Sept. 1 when college coaches can begin actively reaching out to junior prospects like himself.

“I just want to limit all that so that nothing’s coming in the way of my performance and my team for this season,” he said of the recruiting process. “Obviously September 1st is coming up and that’ll bring a couple more stuff with recruiting, and I’ll make sure to quiet that out as quickly as possible. But right now, just the season and my team is what I’m focusing on right now.”

Prior to participating in the Swinney Camp this summer, Kaelin also traveled to Tiger Town for an unofficial visit on April 8.

According to Kaelin, his coach has been in contact with Clemson a little bit since he camped there in June, and he would be happy to hear from the Tigers himself when Sept. 1 rolls around.

“I’m sure there’ll be some coaches that I don’t expect to reach out, to reach out,” he said. “Whoever does, I’m grateful for. I’m not necessarily hoping for anyone to. I already have a lot of great options right now. But Clemson would definitely be a great university and a great program. If they reached out, it’d definitely be pretty cool.”

When Kaelin thinks about Clemson’s program, its tradition at the quarterback position is something that certainly appeals to him, with the Tigers having developed players like Tajh Boyd, Deshaun Watson and Trevor Lawrence in recent years.

“That definitely stands out,” he said. “When you look at a program, a part of that is seeing the coach that’s been there and who they’ve produced, how that program has produced quarterbacks. But obviously a quarterback-friendly offense, and they’ve had really successful quarterbacks that have gone on to do good things in the league. So, that definitely stands out about Clemson, for sure.”

Looking ahead, after this season, Kaelin expects to begin working toward making his commitment decision.

“Sometime after the season, I’ll start narrowing that down and figuring that out,” he said. “But I would say late winter would probably be the latest it could happen, right now. We’ll see.”

There are a handful of schools on his current offer list standing out to him right now, he said.

I feel like I’ll get more clarity on that after September 1st and the more I can talk to coaches,” he said. “But who I’m talking to a lot right now is Michigan State, Minnesota, Vanderbilt, Rutgers. That’s probably the four I talk to the most. Duke and Mizzou a little bit right now. But we’ll see what happens September 1st.”

Nebraska QB ‘really impressed’ Streeter with strong Swinney Camp showing

A standout signal-caller from the Cornhusker State, who has collected double-digit scholarship offers, had the chance to showcase his talent at the Dabo Swinney Camp last month.

Bellevue West High School (Bellevue, Neb.) quarterback Daniel Kaelin – a 6-foot-3, 195-pound rising junior in the class of 2024 – participated in the first session of the Swinney Camp on Wednesday, June 1.

“Camp was really good,” Kaelin told The Clemson Insider. “It was probably one of the longer camps that I did. I thought I did really well. I got to talk to Coach (Brandon) Streeter a little bit more. So, it was a good camp. I was down there with (2024 four-star wide receiver) Dae’vonn Hall, my teammate, and he had a good day. So, it was a good camp.”

Streeter, Clemson’s offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, thought Kaelin had a good day as well after watching him sling the rock around.

“He said he was definitely really impressed with the way I threw,” Kaelin said. “His bottom line was basically that I definitely moved up a lot on their board from where I was after he got to see me throw. That was probably one of the biggest things that he told me. And then it was just good having him around during camp, seeing how he coaches.”

Added Kaelin of the positive feedback he received from Streeter regarding his camp performance: “It was definitely good to hear. I’m confident in myself and the way I throw the football, so I kind of expected that. But it was definitely good to hear from him.”

Streeter also made a good impression on Kaelin when they worked together at the camp.

“I would just say he’s really calm as a coach,” Kaelin said. “He’s really softspoken. I like the way he coaches. He’s obviously extremely knowledgeable and has had a lot of success with the quarterbacks that he’s gotten. So, I think the success that he’s had definitely stands out.”

Arizona State, Duke, Florida State, Kansas, Michigan State, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Rutgers and Vanderbilt have all offered Kaelin, who visited Florida and Michigan State in June and also camped at Duke, Georgia and Vanderbilt.

Kaelin is looking to wrap up his recruitment and render a commitment shortly after his upcoming junior season.

“I’m planning on making a decision pretty quickly after the season, probably December or January, sometime early winter,” he said. “Later this month, I’ll go up to Minnesota and Rutgers, and then after that I’m pretty much done with all visits and stuff until if I want to take any after the season. But that’s where I’m at with visits and the commitment timeline.”

Kaelin named Rutgers, Minnesota, Michigan State, Vanderbilt, Missouri and Duke as the schools standing out most to him right now, as far as the ones he’s been communicating with the most.

How would Clemson fit into Kaelin’s recruitment if the Tigers pull the trigger on an offer moving forward?

“Clemson would definitely be up there if that becomes an option,” he said.

Kaelin, who also made an unofficial visit to Clemson on April 8, is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 27 quarterback in the 2024 class and No. 3 prospect in Nebraska regardless of position. Rivals considers him the No. 4 player in his state and No. 23 pro-style quarterback in his class.

The Clemson Insider recently caught up with a talented signal-caller from the Cornhusker State who is closing in on double-digit scholarship offers and made his first-ever trip to Tiger Town this spring.

Bellevue West High School (Bellevue, Neb.) quarterback Daniel Kaelin – a 6-foot-2, 195-pound rising junior in the 2024 class – was on campus at Clemson for an unofficial visit last month on April 8.

“I enjoyed it a lot,” he told TCI. “We got to tour basically around all the facilities and the campus, and it was a beautiful campus, great facilities. I had a really good time.”

Kaelin pointed to a couple aspects of the visit that stood out to him in particular – the culture and the coaches, including offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brandon Streeter.

“I liked talking to Coach Streeter,” he said. “They’re really family oriented, and I just thought the way they explained their culture, it’s a really high-level culture. Obviously, it’s been a really high-level program.”

What did Kaelin hear from Streeter overall when they were able to chat?

“He kind of ran me through what he expects out of his quarterbacks, kind of talked about their system, and then he came along with us on some of the tours and stuff,” Kaelin said.

Streeter is showing a good bit of interest in Kaelin and wants to see him throw at the Dabo Swinney Camp next month, as well as see some more film from him this upcoming season.

While Kaelin isn’t sure yet whether he’ll camp at Clemson, it’s certainly something he is looking to possibly do.

“I’m going to try and come out to camp,” he said. “I know there’s a lot of schools that want me to come out, so it just depends which schools I can end up getting out to. But that’s definitely a pretty high-priority camp that I want to get out to, but nothing’s final yet.”

The fact that Kaelin is on the recruiting radar of Streeter and a program with Clemson’s prestige – especially considering the caliber of quarterbacks that have suited up for the Tigers in recent years – “definitely means a lot” to Kaelin, he said.

“Arguably some of the best quarterbacks have come out in the last couple years,” he added. “So, it’s definitely exciting to get some interest from a school like that.”

Kaelin describes himself as a quarterback “who can just pick apart the defense.”

“I feel like my accuracy is my biggest strength, and I feel like I’m really cerebral,” he explained. “I feel like I know where to go with the ball, I know what the defense is doing. So, I would say that’s my strengths.”

Kaelin’s offer list includes Florida State, Missouri, Vanderbilt, Nebraska, Michigan State, Minnesota, Rutgers, Kansas and Arizona State, while Georgia is another school that hasn’t yet offered but is showing interest, along with Clemson. He was also expecting Wisconsin and Duke to watch him throw at his school this week.

Of the schools that have already offered, Kaelin mentioned Minnesota, Michigan State, Vanderbilt and Missouri as those he’s been communicating with the most.

What would a future offer from Clemson mean to Kaelin, should he earn the opportunity to play for the Tigers?

“That would definitely mean a lot,” he said. “I feel like it would just show a lot of the hard work that I’ve put in. It’s such a prestigious school and successful school. So, it would definitely mean a lot to get an offer from them.”
