Fan reactions to Seahawks selecting Devon Witherspoon at No. 5

Fan reactions are understandably mixed, as Carter was the common consensus pick.

The wait is over and the Seattle Seahawks made their move in the 2023 NFL Draft. With the No. 5 overall pick, Seattle selected cornerback Devon Witherspoon from Illinois.

It is certainly a shocking move, as the common consensus was the Seahawks picking Georgia defensive tackle Jalen Carter, especially with the Houston Texans picking Alabama’s Will Anderson. In the end, it seems reports of Seattle being skeptical on Carter proved true, and went in another direction to fix their defense.

Of course, fan reactions online were… mixed, to say the least. Carter was definitely a popular potential pick, but it seems the 12’s are starting to realize they may have a better option.

Darius Slay dishes on his fight with DK Metcalf

DK Metcalf has built a reputation of being a rather fiery competitor

Seattle Seahawks star wide receiver DK Metcalf has built a bit of a reputation in the NFL. Aside from being one of the most athletically gifted players in the sport, Metcalf can also be known as quite the fiery competitor to say the least.

Take for example Metcalf’s last performance against the Philadelphia Eagles. Matched up against Eagles corner Darius Slay, Metcalf certainly brought the head. In the tweet below, you can hear from Slay himself what it’s like to line up against the Seahawks star.

Metcalf had himself quite the performance in the City of Brotherly Love. He completely torched Slay and the rest of the Eagles secondary with 10 receptions for 177 yards.

Philadelphia is quite the friendly confines for Metcalf, as he tormented the Eagles with seven receptions for 160 yards in a Wild Card playoff win a season prior to this game.

On Sunday, a WSU Cougar will be a Super Bowl Champion

With Eastern Washington’s Cooper Kupp taking home Super Bowl MVP honors last year, and a WSU Cougar guaranteed to be a champion on Sunday, it’s been a good showing for college football in the Palouse.

Super Sunday will feature the final showdown of the NFL season between the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs. No matter which team is hoisting the Lombardi in Glendale, a Washington State Cougar will be able to call himself champion.

Both the Eagles and the Chiefs feature a former WSU standout. For the Eagles, fan favorite Pullman legend Gardner Minshew is the primary backup to Philly starter Jalen Hurts. Also on the Eagles is offensive lineman Andre Dillard. Formerly a first round selection in the 2019 NFL Draft, Dillard remains quality depth for perhaps the best offensive line in the league.

As for the Chiefs, they have cornerback Jaylen Watson. A seventh round pick in this year’s draft, Watson found himself starting six games for Kansas City, all while logging three interceptions. His first was certainly a memorable one, returning it 99 yards for a touchdown against the Chargers.

Joe Burrow calls Pat Surtain II the best CB in the league

22-year-old Pat Surtain is the best corner in the NFL according to Joe Burrow

Despite being only 22-years old, [autotag]Patrick Surtain[/autotag] II has quickly proved himself to be one, if not the best corners in the NFL. When the Denver Broncos used the No. 9 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft on Surtain, I am not sure even they knew how good he was going to be.

After earning All-Rookie accolades in 2021, Surtain has stepped his game up in 2022 with a Pro Bowl appearance as well as being selected to the First Team All-Pro by both the AP voters as well as players.

Through his first two years in the league, the former Crimson Tide star has only given up 1,015 yards as the primary defender. He has also only given up seven touchdowns while forcing six interceptions.

Other players in the league are starting to notice the lockdown corner as well. Bengals and former LSU Tigers quarterback Joe Burrow had high praise for Surtain on Colin Cowherd‘s podcast saying, “I think he’s the best..he’s tough.”

After leading the Bengals to a Super Bowl in only his second year, Joey B has become one of the most beloved players in the league, so his praise comes in high regards.

Seahawks have 3 Studs and 1 Dud in 27-23 win over Rams

It wasn’t pretty, but style points don’t count for much in the NFL.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”MPLFdm8Asz-2403023-7498″]

Last week I wrote about how the 12th Man might want to hit up their local pharmacy for antacids following their loss to the Raiders. Today, some may want to consult with their physicians about how to lower their heart rates after a thrilling victory.

The Seattle Seahawks defeated their bitter rivals, the Los Angeles Rams, 27-23 to get back into the win column. Seattle snaps their two-game losing streak, both this season and to the Rams, with a crucial victory. Sunday was also Seattle’s first time beating the Rams in Los Angeles since the 2017 season.

As for the Rams, they become the first defending Super Bowl Champion to lose six-straight games and start a season with a 3-9 record.

Seattle desperately needed a win, especially with the 49ers winning, and the Giants and Commanders tying. It wasn’t pretty, but style points don’t count for much in the NFL. The goal was a win and it’s what the Seahawks are taking home.

Alabama CB Khyree Jackson suspended, per Nick Saban

Junior CB Khyree Jackson has been absent for the last two games and now we know why.

Junior cornerback Khyree Jackson has not appeared in the last two games for the Alabama Crimson Tide and questions have been raised.

Head coach Nick Saban put those questions to rest when he announced that Jackson is currently suspended from the team. Saban didn’t state a reason for the suspension or a timeline for Jackson’s return.

Jackson has served mostly in a reserve role this season posting only seven tackles and no other registered stats. Jackson transferred into the program from the JUCO ranks but has struggled to break into a starting role that includes NFL talents such as Eli Ricks and Kool-Aid McKinstry.

Jackson is listed as a senior so it will be interesting to see what this means for his career moving forward.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Jackson’s suspension and share any updates that become available.

Lions signed CB Chris Jones to the active roster

Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia announced that the team has signed corner Chris Jones to the active roster, taking the vacated spot left open after Justin Coleman was placed on injured reserve.

Detroit Lions coach Matt Patricia announced that the team has signed corner Chris Jones to the active roster, taking the vacated spot left open after Justin Coleman was placed on injured reserve.

Jones, an undrafted corner out of Nebraska in 2018 and got his NFL career started when he signed with the Lions but failed to make it out of training camp.

Jones (6-0, 200) elected to sign onto the Arizona Cardinals practice squad as was promoted to the active roster in November of his rookie season. During his two seasons with the Cardinals, Jones bounced between the practice squad and active roster, playing in 13 games, including starting three in 2019. He amassed 22 tackles and six pass breakups during that time.

After 2020 camp, the Cardinals waived him at cut downs and signed him onto their practice squad. After not being among the Cardinals protected practice squad players this week — he was in Week 1, per Cardinals Wire — the Lions took the opportunity to bring him back to Detroit and signed him off their practice squad.

Desmond Trufant says rookie Jeff Okudah “has what it takes”

Detroit Lions veteran corner Desmond Trufant spoke to the media today and had high praise for third overall pick, rookie corner Jeff Okudah.

Detroit Lions veteran corner Desmond Trufant spoke to the media on Thursday and had high praise for third overall pick, rookie corner Jeff Okudah.

“I mean honestly, I think he has what it takes,” Trufant said. “I can just tell he’s fundamentally sound. That’s big coming to the NFL from college. Can you do your fundamentals every play? Whether you’re tired, no matter what the situation is, can you continuously do that? I can already tell he’s a technician. He works hard too, and he’s always asking questions. I’m excited to play with him and see how this thing goes.”

Trufant’s words should carry some weight in this situation, as not only is he a seven-year veteran, but he is also a former first-round pick who started as a rookie in the NFL. Furthermore, as Justin Rogers of the Detroit News pointed out during Thursday’s Zoom, Trufant was one of the rare exceptions, who didn’t struggle as a starting rookie corner.

Rogers probed Trufant for information on what advice he got that led to his early success and what advice he would pass along to Okudah:

“Figure out how you’re going to study, how you’re going to rehab, just those everyday routines that all of us vets have,” Trufant said. “And stick to it. If something is working for you, stick to it. At the corner position, there’s a lot of pressure on your shoulders. I would just tell him, you create your own pressure out there. However you feel, however you react to every situation, it’s on you, good or bad. Just stay even-keeled. You’re not going to make every play, but you’re going to make a lot of plays, as well.”

The Lions have begun phase 2 of training camp which means Trufant and Okudah have been getting in some light fieldwork, but they are headed towards non-padded practices this week and are likely to put the pads on as early as Monday.

Report: Lions agree to terms with CB Darryl Roberts

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Detroit Lions have agreed to terms with cornerback Darryl Roberts.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero is reporting that the Detroit Lions have agreed to terms with cornerback Darryl Roberts.

Roberts was originally drafted by the New England Patriots in the seventh round of the 2015 NFL Draft (pick No. 247 overall) but spent his rookie season on injured reserve, was released at training camp cutdowns in 2016, never playing an NFL snap for them.

After his release, Roberts was swept up by the New York Jets who added him to their active roster. He would spend the next four seasons with the Jets, earning a starting role in 2018, then a 3-year $18 million contract extension in the 2019 offseason, and was released just over 10 days ago.

He has played in 56 NFL games, starting 26, is 6-0 tall with 4.38 speed and the range to play corner and safety. Roberts earned above-average grades across the board from Pro Football Focus in 2017 and 2018 but took a step back in 2019.

Roberts is experienced enough to challenge Amani Oruwariye to start opposite Desmond Trufant and is likely viewed as an insurance option if the Lions are unable to land a top-tier cornerback in this draft class. The addition of Roberts should not keep the Lions from taking Ohio State’s Jeff Okudah at the top of the first round.

Week 17 preview and prediction: Seahawks vs. 49ers

Previewing and predicting the Week 17 showdown between the Seattle Seahawks and the San Francisco 49ers for the NFC West title.

It is finally here, the showdown of the season. The most anticipated game for weeks now, the Seattle Seahawks will host the San Francisco 49ers for a battle of division supremacy. The stakes couldn’t be higher, as everything from the No. 1 seed to a wild card is still on the table for either team.

Both the Seahawks and the 49ers are seeking a long-sought-after division crown, which has eluded these organizations for several years now. The infamous rivalry between these two teams is at the best it has been since both met in the NFC Championship in the 2013 season.

The Seahawks already defeated the Niners on “Monday Night Football” earlier this season in perhaps the game of the year. Seattle outlasted San Francisco in a wild, back and forth showdown which lasted until the very final second of overtime. The Seahawks managed to escape with a 27-24 win, but circumstances are wildly different now.

The biggest concern is the health of both squads. When these two played earlier this year, San Francisco was hurting on offense. Superstar tight end George Kittle – who transforms both the passing and ground game with his blocking skills – was out. Wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders left the contest early and both tackles were shaky in their first start back from extended time missed due to injuries.

Now it is the Seahawks who are fielding a team of the walking wounded. Left tackle Duane Brown and wide receiver Malik Tuner will be inactive. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and corner Shaquill Griffin are slated to play, but both have missed the last two games with nagging injuries.

Also, the Seahawks are down their first, second and third-string running backs, prompting them to sign 33-year-old Marshawn Lynch back to the roster.

To say Seattle is shorthanded is the understatement of the week.
