Chiefs cut former draft pick, two-time Super Bowl champion from practice squad

The Kansas City #Chiefs cut Cornell Powell from their practice squad this week after they signed ex-#Patriots WR Tyquan Thornton.

According to a tweet from NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Kansas City Chiefs have released wide receiver Cornell Powell from their practice squad.

Powell was selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2021 draft out of the University of Clemson.

Despite an impressive showing at the NFL combine, the former Tiger was signed to Kansas City’s practice squad where he has spent the majority of his career in the league.

A two-time Super Bowl champion with the Chiefs, Powell has continuously had impressive showings in the preseason but has been unable to translate that success into the regular season.

Powell’s release is thought to be the corresponding move to Kansas City’s signing of wide receiver Tyquan Thornton on Monday.

Though it is unclear whether Thornton will see action with the Chiefs in the coming weeks, Powell’s departure signals that Kansas City was ready to move in a different direction at the wide receiver position.

Stay tuned to see if another team will pick up the fan-favorite or if he will re-join the Chiefs later this season.

Chiefs make 4 roster moves ahead of Week 8 matchup vs. Raiders

The Kansas City Chiefs made four roster moves on Tuesday ahead of their Week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The Kansas City Chiefs made a series of roster moves ahead of their Week 8 matchup against the Las Vegas Raiders at Allegiant Stadium on October 27.

First, the defending Super Bowl champions announced that they had signed cornerback Keith Taylor to their active roster. Taylor was previously on Kansas City’s practice squad and adds depth to the Chiefs’ secondary after cornerback Jaylen Watson’s injury in Week 7.

Next, the team announced that it had signed quarterback Chris Oladokun and wide receiver Cornell Powell to its practice squad.

Finally, Kansas City indicated that Watson had been placed on the Chiefs’ injured reserve list.

These transactions came after third-year quarterback Bailey Zappe was signed off of Kansas City’s practice squad by the Cleveland Browns, who needed another signal-caller due to an injury sustained by Deshaun Watson on Sunday.

Stay tuned to see if these moves mark the end of the Chiefs’ adjustments this week, or if they prove to be part of a broader reshuffle of Kansas City’s roster by general manager Brett Veach ahead of the NFL’s trade deadline.

Surprising WR earned Chiefs’ top PFF grade in loss to Lions

Cornell Powell was earned Kansas City’s highest PFF grade for his efforts in the #Chiefs’ preseason loss to the #Lions.

The Kansas City Chiefs played their second preseason game against the Detroit Lions on Saturday and fell just short of victory in a 24-23 loss.

Kansas City’s starters only played in the first quarter, allowing second and third-string players to see meaningful snaps as they vie to earn spots on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster.

When Pro Football Focus released their grades for the preseason tilt, fourth-year wide receiver Cornell Powell was revealed to be Kansas City’s top performer after a spectacular showing in the loss.

Powell’s 91.3 grade was well-earned and reflected his outsized impact on the Chiefs’ effort against Detroit, where he caught one pass for 64 yards and scored a touchdown.

Impactful preseason performances don’t always translate into regular season success, but with his latest achievement against the Lions, Powell is sure to have put himself on the radars of teams around the NFL.

Expect to see him back in action when the Chiefs face the Chicago Bears on Thursday.

Veteran Chiefs WR discusses mentorship role, praises young wideouts

Kansas City #Chiefs WR Justin Watson discusses mentorship role, praises young wideouts | @EdEastonJr

The wide receivers room gets plenty of attention during the preseason, with many talented players competing for limited spots on the depth chart.

Chiefs wide receiver Justin Watson is entering his third season with the team and has already assumed a mentorship role. He spoke with reporters on Monday about adjusting to being viewed as the older veteran in the room.

“I’ve always just tried to be a leader in the (receiver) room. Even my first year here, when I was trying to get my feet wet,” said Watson. “Yeah, like I said, it is just cool to know what the coaches want, know what Pat (Patrick Mahomes) wants, and be able to share some insight with these guys so they don’t have to learn the hard way. It’s been fun coming in as the new guy and then three years in, kind of find myself as the old guy in the room and the guy that has got a little more grey hairs here and there.”

Watson has been a reliable target for Patrick Mahomes in recent seasons, making impactful plays during games and contributing to back-to-back Super Bowl runs. He highlighted two of the younger receivers in the room competing for a roster spot.

“I think top to bottom, we’ve had a lot of good receivers. I look at Skyy Moore as another guy that I think (is) in his third year also has evolved his role from just playing one position to knowing all the (receiver) spots. Being able to – you know, if something happens, somebody needs a water break, a shoelace (is untied), or something, and being able to point at Skyy and (he’ll) head in. Cornell Powell is a great example in the preseason the other day.” said Watson. “He wasn’t supposed to be on that play. We needed a sub for one play, and then he makes the play of the preseason with a great catch. I think we have done a great job as a receiver room, not just learning one position or just our plays, but trying to learn the whole offense so we can be dependable.”

The 28-year-old, a three-time Super Bowl champion, finished last season with 27 catches for 460 yards and three touchdowns.

Chiefs vs. Lions: Cornell Powell scores impressive 64-yard touchdown

Veteran WR Cornell Powell scored a 64-yard touchdown in the #Chiefs’ preseason home-opener against the Detroit #Lions on Saturday.

The Kansas City Chiefs will have some difficult decisions to make with their wide receiver position after the preseason after seeing several of their pass-catchers put together exceptional performances over the last few weeks.

In an exhibition matchup against the Detroit Lions on Saturday, veteran receiver Cornell Powell became the latest player to put himself in the conversation to make the Chiefs’ 53-man roster.

Powell scored an impressive 64-yard touchdown after catching a pass from backup quarterback Chris Oladokun, which helped give Kansas City a two-score lead in a hotly-contested preseason tilt.

Check out this video of Powell’s score against the Lions, which was posted to Twitter by the NFL’s official account:

Originally selected by the Chiefs in the fifth round of the 2021 NFL draft, Powell has played in Kansas City for his entire NFL career.

Expect to see Powell continue competing for a spot on the Chiefs’ 53-man roster through the rest of Kansas City’s preseason.

LOOK: Chiefs newcomer scores impressive touchdown at training camp

Check out this video of #Chiefs QB Carson Wentz hitting WR Cornell Powell for a touchdown during Kansas City’s practice session on Friday.

The Kansas City Chiefs signed quarterback Carson Wentz during the 2024 offseason to fill the second-string spot on their depth chart behind reigning Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes.

Though the team will hope that Wentz isn’t forced into action during the regular season, the former first-round pick has put together impressive performances during training camp and seems to be in great form ahead of the Chiefs’ first exhibition game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

During workouts on Friday, Wentz hit receiver Cornell Powell with a perfectly placed pass in the back of the endzone that scored a touchdown against Kansas City’s defense:

If Wentz can translate his practice performances into exceptional showings in the preseason, Chiefs fans might start to feel more at ease with the veteran backup ahead of the team’s Super Bowl defense campaign.

Expect to see Wentz fight for the right to be Mahomes’ backup throughout Kansas City’s three-game preseason schedule.

Five Former Clemson Players Looking for Super Bowl Win

Five former Tigers look to earn Super Bowl rings today.

Dabo Swinney and his coaching staff over the years have recruited and developed some excellent players, with five looking to earn Super Bowl rings today.

Super Bowl LVIII kicks off tonight at 6:30 p.m., with the San Francisco 49ers looking to dethrone the defending champion Kansas City Chiefs. It should be a fantastic game, as both teams are stacked with talent.

The five Tigers looking for rings are Cornell Powell and Justyn Ross for the Kansas City Chiefs and Austin Bryant, Clelin Ferrell, and Ray-Ray McCloud for the 49ers. McCloud has been the most impactful for his team this season, with 428 combined return yards and 12 catches for 135 yards.

Clelin Ferrell had 28 tackles with 3.5 sacks this season for the 49ers before injuries ended his season, while Austin Bryant didn’t get much run in the defensive line rotation. Former star wide receiver Justyn Ross had six catches for 53 yards this season.

WATCH: Chiefs QB Blaine Gabbert hits Cornell Powell for touchdown

#Chiefs QB Blaine Gabbert hit Cornell Powell for his second touchdown pass of Kansas City’s preseason Week 2 matchup against the #Cardinals.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Blaine Gabbert found wide receiver Cornell Powell for a touchdown late in the third quarter against the Arizona Cardinals to put his team up 31-10 heading into the game’s final 15 minutes.

The play came after an interesting sequence where tight end Kendall Blanton seemed to fumble into the end zone but was later ruled down by contact to set up Kansas City’s offense at the Cardinals’ goal line. Gabbert hit Powell after rolling out of the pocket, finding the former fifth-round pick for his second touchdown pass of the night.

This score will likely put the game out of reach for Arizona and should secure Kansas City its first win of the 2023 preseason. Though the result of the matchup won’t affect either team’s fortunes in the final standings at the end of the year, their effort in the exhibition tilt is a good sign for their trajectory ahead of September’s regular season kickoff.

8 Chiefs with something to prove in training camp Week 2

These eight #Chiefs have something to prove in Kansas City’s second week of training camp.

The Kansas City Chiefs face sky-high expectations ahead of the 2023 regular season, and preparations for their championship defense campaign have already begun in earnest at their training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri. While the Chiefs’ up-and-coming receiving corps has been the object of intense adulation at Missouri Western State University, players in other position groups are still trying to break through to secure themselves a spot on Kansas City’s final 53-man roster.

Here are eight Chiefs who have something to prove during Kansas City’s second week of training camp:

Chiefs WR Cornell Powell placed on practice squad injured list, Jerrion Ealy re-signed

The #Chiefs made a pair of practice squad transactions ahead of practice on Tuesday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have made a pair of roster moves on the practice squad for Week 18, both involving the wide receiver position.

The Chiefs have placed WR Cornell Powell on the practice squad injured list. The 2021 fifth-round draft pick, Powell, has been elevated from the practice squad to the 53-man roster three times this season (Week 11 through Week 13) when the team was dealing with injuries at the receiver position. He no longer had any standard elevations left for the regular season, but those reset during postseason play.

Powell played three snaps on offense and 28 snaps on special teams in the games he was elevated for this season. He did not record any official statistics during those snaps.

It’s unclear when Powell suffered his injury and what it means for his status as the playoffs draw near. Remember, the Chiefs are also dealing with an injury to Skyy Moore and Mecole Hardman remains on injured reserve pending activation to the 53-man roster. The depth of this position continues to be tested.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs re-signed WR/RB Jerrion Ealy to the practice squad. A former undrafted free agent signing following the 2022 NFL draft, Ealy was released from the practice squad on Dec. 27. Ealy was expected to find his way back to the team on a reserve/future contract as soon as the regular season concluded, but this injury to Powell has him re-joining the practice squad.
