Jets elevate Tanzel Smart, Conor McDermott from practice squad for Sunday

Jets elevate Tanzel Smart, Conor McDermott from practice squad for Sunday

The Jets have called up two players from the practice squad for Sunday’s game against the Patriots. They have elevated DL Tanzel Smart and OL Conor McDermott.

Smart will make his first appearance on the active roster this season, having spent the entire season on the practice squad. With Sheldon Rankins out, Smart gives the Jets some depth at the defensive tackle position behind Quinnen Williams, Nathan Shepherd and Solomon Thomas.

McDermott has been elevated for the third consecutive game, and with this being his third elevation, the Jets have exhausted that option for McDermott moving forward. If they want to bring McDermott back up to the active roster, they will have to sign him to the 53-man roster. He has appeared in six games this season.

Jets re-sign Conor McDermott, waive Zonovan Knight

Some depth on the line, but at the cost of a fan favorite

The Jets re-signed offensive tackle Conor McDermott Monday and waived running back Zonovan Knight.

McDermott was injured during the Green and White scrimmage early in August and was cut as the Jets made their initial 53-man roster. With his return, the Jets have four offensive tackles: Duane Brown, George Fant, Max Mitchell and McDermott.

Knight was one of two undrafted free agents to make the initial 53-man roster, the other being safety Tony Adams. With him being waived, the Jets currently have Michael Carter, Breece Hall and Ty Johnson on the active roster.

Knight could be brought back to the practice squad if he clears waivers. The Jets have one open spot on the practice squad and currently don’t have any running backs among the group, so they can easily bring Knight back as their fourth running back and could call him up on game day from the practice squad up to three times during the season.

Conor McDermott goes down with apparent leg injury

Jets backup tackle Conor McDermott went down with an apparent leg injury during Saturday’s Green and White scrimmage.

Not the type of the news Jets fans want to see with an offensive line group that is already thin at the tackle position.

Backup left tackle Conor McDermott went down with an apparent leg injury during Saturday’s Green and White scrimmage. Trainers came out to check on McDermott and he had to be helped to the locker room. He was not able to put any weight on his leg.

The Jets were already showing interest in offensive tackle Duane Brown. This injury may help expedite those talks. It’s certainly possible that Brown will now be a Jets within the next few days. We’ll see how serious McDermott’s injury is.

Jets re-sign OL Conor McDermott to 1-year deal

The Jets retained backup offensive lineman Conor McDermott.

Conor McDermott will return to the Jets in 2022.

New York re-signed the offensive lineman on Wednesday to a one-year deal, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. McDermott has spent the past three seasons with the Jets, mostly as a backup offensive tackle.

McDermott started three of New York’s final four games in 2021, but his most notable moment as a Jet came during the team’s Week 16 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. McDermott caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Zach Wilson on a trick play to give New York an eight-point lead midway through the fourth quarter.

It’s unclear what the Jets will pay McDermott in 2022, but his role likely won’t change. The Jets need upgrades along the offensive line and McDermott has proven himself only as a backup during his time in the NFL.

Jets Free Agent Profile: What to do with OT Conor McDermott?

Conor McDermott’s versatility allows him to step in at multiple offensive line positions. Is that enough for the Jets to retain him?

Before Joe Douglas can focus on external targets, he has a handful of impending in-house free agents to evaluate.

The Jets have more than a few players set to hit the open market this offseason. Some won’t factor into New York’s plans for 2022, while others, it’s safe to assume, the Jets would like to keep around for a while. Either way, Douglas has a lot of work to do to put together a competitive roster for Robert Saleh’s second year at the helm.

Conor McDermott has been with the Jets since 2019 due in large part to his versatility. The 29-year-old can play multiple positions on the offensive line and has been called upon to do just that during his time with the organization.

Should the Jets bring McDermott back as offensive line depth again in 2022? Let’s evaluate the situation in our latest free agent profile.

Sunday was an amazing day for THICC SIX big-man touchdowns!

Three different offensive linemen scored receiving touchdowns on Sunday, making December 26, 2021 the greatest THICC SIX day ever.

There are all kinds of great things about football, but I think we can all agree that nothing about the game warms the heart like an offensive lineman scoring a touchdown. It’s when the game’s most anonymous citizens get their moment in the spotlight to show their great hands and sneaky athleticism.

As a longtime connoisseur of such plays, I was proud to detail all seven THICC SIX touchdowns in the 2019 season. That was unquestionably a banner season for the big guys, but Week 16 of the 2021 season brought a Big Man Touchdown avalanche the likes of which we may never have seen before. There were three such touchdowns on Sunday alone, which means that the NFL is on to the idea that these touchdowns should happen far more often.

We are proud to detail each one, as we always do at Touchdown Wire.

Jets’ Conor McDermott with incredible grab for big man touchdown

Conor McDermott with the big man touchdown for the Jets

Zach Wilson had a spectacular TD run in the first half Sunday for the New York Jets against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The rookie QB then threw a TD pass to offensive lineman Conor McDermott, who made arguably the best grab by the New York Jets all season.

Watch as Wilson buys some time in the face of the Jaguars rush. You can follow McDermott as he slips off the line of scrimmage and into the end zone, where he tries to find some space.

He isn’t exactly wide-open but when you have hands like the 6-foot-8, 310-pounder from UCLA, you don’t need to be.

A great grab for a big man TD and Gang Green rejoiced.

Jets injury report: New York receives encouraging initial prognosis on Jarrad Davis

Jets vs. Packers preseason Week 2 injury report features an encouraging initial prognosis on Jarrad Davis’ ankle injury.

The Jets could not shake the injury bug in their preseason Week 2 matchup, as numerous players departed New York’s win over the Packers early.

Jarrad Davis was carted off the field early in the first half after sustaining an ankle injury. The Jets received encouraging news on Davis’ status postgame, though, as Robert Saleh said his initial prognosis is “promising.” The 26-year-old is undergoing further testing to determine the severity of the injury.

Conor McDermott was also carted off in the first half with a knee injury, but Saleh did not offer any clarification on his status postgame. Ronald Blair, who made his first appearance since 2019 against Green Bay, suffered a hamstring injury, while Corey Ballentine injured his knee. Ballentine provided one of the Jets’ most explosive plays of the game before departing, delivering a 73-yard kick return.

Of the Jets who did not suit up for the team’s preseason Week 2 action, Bless Austin and Morgan Moses both sat out due to personal reasons.

Jets Injury Report: Jamal Adams, Quinnen Williams limited on Wednesday

Jets Injury Report 12/18.

Jamal Adams and Quinnen Williams both took a major step in the right direction on Wednesday, as they participated in practice on a limited basis.

Adams (ankle) and Williams (neck) are now positioned to return to action against the Steelers on Sunday barring any setbacks. Williams sat out New York’s Thursday night matchup with the Ravens last week after suffering a stinger against the Dolphins, while Adams has missed Gang Green’s last two games after injuring his ankle against the Bengals in Week 13.

“The chances of me playing this week are very high,” Adams said after practice.

Adams isn’t the only Jets defensive back who could return against Pittsburgh. Cornerback Brian Poole is in the later stages of concussion protocol and could play against the Steelers assuming he passes testing.

As for Wednesday’s non-participants, Tom Compton sat out with a calf injury. If Compton can’t go against Pittsburgh, the Jets will turn to either Conor McDermott or Brent Qvale, who was activated from injured reserve last week.

Demaryius Thomas also missed practice on Wednesday due to knee and hamstring injuries. Thomas did not play against the Ravens and his status against Steelers is up in the air.

Report: Jets RT Chuma Edoga out multiple weeks with MCL sprain

Jets rookie right tackle Chuma Edoga will be out for mutiple weeks after suffering a Grade 2 MCL Sprain in the Jets 34-3 win over Oakland.

Rookie right tackle Chuma Edoga left the Jets’ 34-3 win over the Raiders with a knee injury. Now, he’ll miss significant time.

Following the win, Edoga came into the locker room with a brace on his left leg, according to Connor Hughes of The Athletic. Edoga went for an MRI on Monday to determine the extent of the injury

Now, the Jets will be without Edoga for an extended period of time due to a Grade 2 MCL sprain, according to Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.

Edoga was the Jets’ third-round pick out of USC in the 2019 NFL draft. He took over as a starter in Week 5 and has played eight games at both tackle positions due to the Jets’ constant reshuffling on the offensive line.

The Jets have had to play musical chairs on the offensive line due to injuries. Ryan Kalil and Brian Winters are both out for the season, while Kelechi Osemele is no longer on the team.

With Edoga sidelined, Brandon Shell will slide back in at right tackle, while the banged-up Kelvin Beachum (ankle) will continue to man the left side. If he cannot go against Cincinnati in Week 13, Conor McDermott is the next man up on the Jets depth chart.
