Robert Saleh’s incredible halftime message vs. Packers

The Jets made the Packers sink instead of swim

The first half for the Jets against the Packers certainly wasn’t anything to write home about. The game was tied, 3-3, and the offense was showing almost nothing of note, other than Breece Hall’s 55 rushing yards.

However, head coach Robert Saleh saw something in his offensive line and the way they were attacking the Packers that made him believe the Jets were going to take control in the second half. That mentality was part of his halftime speech to his team and he shared some insight on that message with reporters after the game.

“The mindset to go 60 minutes,” said Saleh. “And to give them 60 percent more. And just keep giving them body blow after body blow after body blow. And just keep hitting them, keep hitting them in the mouth. O-line just keep pushing and just keep leaning on them and we felt like if we could just keep taking them down to deep water, they’ll find out they can’t swim. It was just a mindset. I thought our O-line was outstanding, especially in that fourth quarter. Just leaning on them, especially in the run game. I wish we would have punched one in at the end, but good job by them obviously holding up inside the 5.”

Sure enough, the Jets rushed for 116 yards in the second half, including 61 yards from Breece Hall with a 34-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. The Jets scored two rushing touchdowns in the second half, the other being the 20-yard reverse from Braxton Berrios.

The offensive line definitely stepped up in the second half, the offense came alive and, well…the Packers ended up sinking.

After the game, Jets fans were still hanging around Lambeau Field in excitement after the team’s biggest win in quite some time. Check this out, courtesy of Jets team reporter Ethan Greenberg.

If the scene is this big in Green Bay, just imagine what it’s going to look like in two weeks when the Jets host the Patriots and then the following week against the Bills.

Instant analysis after Jets pull off huge win in Lambeau over Packers

Instant thoughts on the Jets, who are now 4-2 after winning in Green Bay

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”hMZ8u3RaPw-2303481-7498″]

Looks like the Jets have arrived and the excuses are no more. There was no backup quarterback for folks to use to try and discredit a Jets win. This was Aaron Rodgers, the MVP of the last two seasons. This was also a game in Lambeau Field. The Jets knocked off the Green Bay Packers, 27-10, and have won three straight for the first time 2010, which, as we know, was the last time the Jets reached the playoffs. Here’s some quick thoughts and game balls from the now 4-2 New York Jets.

Quick Hits

  • Breece Hall is him. Another big rushing performance from the rookie as Hall ran 20 times for 116 yards including a huge, 34-yard fourth-quarter touchdown that gave the Jets all the momentum that they never let up. In fact, the Jets never trailed in this game. In total, the Jets rushed for 179 yards as Hall and Michael Carter were able to milk the clock late to seal the deal for the Jets.
  • Zach Wilson certainly did not build off of his last five quarters entering this game. He went just 10/18 for 110 yards but he made a couple of key throws, including on the drive that ended with the Braxton Berrios touchdown. A 41-yard strike to Corey Davis helped set that score up. It was far from a perfect day, as Wilson also had an erratic pass that he was lucky wasn’t intercepted in the end zone. But he also did not turn the ball over and helped manage the game well. Survive and advance, as they say. Wilson is now 3-0 this season.
  • Oh my goodness, this defense is incredible. Other than Aaron Donald, you’d be hard-pressed to find a defensive tackle playing better than Quinnen Williams right now. And quietly, Sheldon Rankins has played well, too. Quinnen scored two sacks to boost his team-leading total to five on the year, while John Franklin-Myers and Rankins also picked up a sack each. The Jets also defended five passes, including two from Sauce Gardner, who looks to be okay after he left the field to be checked for a head injury. Oh, and the number of net rushing yards for the Packers Sunday? 60. That’s it.
  • The Jets’ defense also came up big on third down. The Packers went just 4/16 on third down. What was once a weakness for the Jets has started turning into one of their strengths. This defense is getting better and that’s scary for their upcoming opponents, including next week’s, Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos.
  • The Jets’ offense, on the other hand, not so good on third down. New York went just 1/11 on third down. That needs to improve as the games now start to get bigger for the Jets. Also, more drops from Garrett Wilson and he still has moments running routes short of the sticks. He’ll learn, though.
  • Special teams, too! How clutch did Brant Boyer’s unit come up Sunday? A blocked field goal and a blocked punt, the first time that happened in a game since 2017. Not only that, but the blocked punt was returned for a touchdown by Will Parks. The Jets have one of the better special teams units in the league and a lot of the country got to find that out today.
  • The Jets are 4-2! The Jets have won three straight! With everything that has gone down over the past few years, even before this season started, for this team to sit at 4-2 is absolutely incredible and Robert Saleh deserves a lot of credit for keeping this team on point. Perhaps he’ll be find grabbing those receipts after all. Also credit Mike LaFleur, who adjusted well to the run game in the second half and made some nice calls with the Berrios reverse and the tight end screen.
  • A lot still to clean up on offense, for sure. But the bottom line is the New York Jets are 4-2. Enjoy it.

Key Stat

20 carries, 60 yards. That was the team rushing total for the Packers Sunday. The Jets absolutely shut down the Packers’ rushing attack. AJ Dillon had 41 yards while Aaron Jones, who typically is a stud, had all of 19 yards on the ground. Jones did have 25 yards receiving, but still, that’s just 44 yards total. Neither Packers’ running back made much of an impact in this game and the Jets up front are a huge reason for that. New York recorded five tackles for a loss (Quinnen Williams – 2, Vinny Curry – 1, John Franklin-Myers – 1, Sheldon Rankins – 1). To stop a great duo like Jones and Dillon like that should give the Jets a ton of confidence moving forward.

Game Balls

Breece Hall: Yet again, Hall proved why he was one of the top running backs in the draft and why the Jets should continue to rely on him because he will continue to do great things for the Jets. 116 yards on 20 carries for Hall, including the 34-yard touchdown, plus the ability to drown the clock late. One of the biggest reasons the Jets won this game.

Mike LaFleur: It’s fair to give LaFleur some credit here. After a slow first half, LaFleur let his running backs do the damage in the second half and made the big call to start the fourth to get Hall that 34-yard touchdown. The reverse to Berrios and the tight end screen were also big plays that helped build momentum, or in the Berrios case, score a touchdown.

Quinnen Williams: It feels like Williams always shows up here, but why wouldn’t he? Two sacks, two TFLs, 3 quarterback hits and a blocked field goal. At this point, it would be an absolute crime if Williams isn’t voted All-Pro.

Top Takeaway

No one can use excuses anymore against the Jets. They’re for real. Last week, it was “Oh, the Jets played a third-string quarterback.” Yes, but they didn’t face that quarterback when they scored 40 points. After today, what’s the excuse? This was Aaron freaking Rodgers they just beat and they beat him soundly. Rodgers went 26/41 for246 yards with a touchdown and the Jets sacked him four times. Does the offense still need work? Absolutely. But if the offense can get everything to start clicking and the defense continues its strong play, this is a dangerous team.

Watch: Jets continue their run as fourth-quarter team with 34-yard Breece Hall touchdown

Breece does it again!

The Jets entered Week 6 as one of the best teams in the fourth quarter, having scored 58 points through five games. That 58 quickly turned into 65 as the Jets opened the fourth quarter against the Packers with a 34-yard touchdown run by Breece Hall, who now has 93 yards and a touchdown on 14 carries. The score gave the Jets a 24-10 lead and a ton of momentum after the Packers drove the field and scored. That was the perfect answer the Jets needed. Can they hold on and get to 4-2?

Watch: Jets block punt, Will Parks returns for touchdown

Micheal Clemons blocks the punt and Will Parks gets the touchdown

Brant Boyer has made a huge impact on the Jets special teams of late and his unit has had a day so far. First, it was a blocked field goal in the second quarter by Quinnen Williams. Then in the third quarter, the Jets top that with a blocked punt by Micheal Clemons that led to a touchdown return from Will Parks and now, all of a sudden, the Jets have all the momentum, taking a 17-3 lead.

Enjoy another big moment from Clemons.

Halftime thoughts: Defense carrying Jets, third down woes killing offense, Jets tied 3-3

Halftime thoughts with the Jets tied, 3-3

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”0WK1PpsArw-2303450-7498″]

The scoreless drought wasn’t as long as the one between the Houston Astros and Seattle Mariners Saturday, but it sure felt like it was both the New York Jets and Green Bay Packers slugged through a scoreless first quarter before the Jets finally put three points on the board almost ten minutes into the second quarter.

Just before halftime, the Packers drove the field and kicked a 29-yard field goal of their own and we head into halftime deadlocked at 3-3.

The Jets’ defense has been fantastic all day so far. They are absolutely shutting down the Packers’ run game (19 yards on 11 carries) and have a takeaway (Lamarcus Joyner fumble recovery). They nearly had a pick-six early in the game from Sauce Gardner, but replay showed the tip of the football hit the ground before popping up into the air.

Quinnen Williams. What more needs to be said? He has another sack and two quarterback hits. The hope is he gets back on track after getting poked in the eye in the second quarter. Sheldon Rankins also has a sack as he has quietly been a solid player for New York as well this season.

Special teams is also getting into the mix as the Jets blocked a Mason Crosby field goal attempt to start the second quarter. Two of the Jets’ three units have played well through two quarters. The third unit, however, not so much.

The offense has been, how you say, no bueno. Well, Breece Hall has been running well once again. He has 55 yards on ten carries and also added five yards on two catches. Other than that…yikes.

Zach Wilson is 6/12 for 28 yards. The Jets have 17 net passing yards and Wilson has been sacked twice for 11 yards lost. No Jets receiver has even hit ten yards receiving. Garrett Wilson has eight yards on one catch and is again getting a case of the dropsies.

New York’s third-down issues are rearing their ugly heads again. The Jets are 0/7 on third down and have just three total first downs. They have a grand total of 80 net yards (63 rushing, 17 passing).

Yet, despite all that, the Jets are tied with the Packers, 3-3, because their defense has been incredible. They get the ball to start the second half. They need to continue feeding Hall. If they can get him going and get the offense in sync, they can win this game.

Jets announce inactives for Week 6 vs. Packers

Jets announce inactives for Week 6 vs. Packers

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”csL3cmTzmy-2295410-7498″]

The Jets have announced their inactives for Week 6 against the Green Bay Packers. They are as follows:

QB Mike White
TE Jeremy Ruckert
S Tony Adams
DE Jermaine Johnson
CB Bryce Hall
WR Denzel Mims
OT Mike Remmers

The only surprise on here is Remmers, as the Jets elevated him from their practice squad Saturday, along with TE Kenny Yeboah. As ESPN’s Rich Cimini notes, it’s possible another team had interest in poaching Remmers from the Jets’ practice squad to their own 53-man roster, so the elevation by the Jets would prevent that and allow the Jets to keep him a bit longer.

Other than that, no surprises. Johnson has an ankle injury, White is inactive as the third quarterback, Ruckert is a healthy scratch with the elevation of Yeboah, making Yeboah the TE3 today, Hall and Mims continue to also be weekly inactives.

For the Packers, Rashan Gary is active. There was concern on him after he was added to the injury list Thursday with a toe injury, but he is good to go.

Here are the Packers inactives.

WR Christian Watson
OL Rasheed Walker
OL Sean Rhyan
WR Samori Toure
DL Jonathan Ford

Projecting Jets inactives for Week 6 vs. Packers

A guess at who will be inactive this week along with the already-known Jermaine Johnson

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”csL3cmTzmy-2295410-7498″]

With the Jets calling up two players, Mike Remmers and Kenny Yeboah, from the practice squad, the Jets will have to name seven players as inactive for Sunday’s game against the Packers.

One of those players is already known: defensive end Jermaine Johnson, who is out with an ankle injury. Here’s a guess at who the other six will be, along with Johnson.

Projected Week 6 inactives

DL Jermaine Johnson
QB Mike White
WR Denzel Mims
CB Bryce Hall
S Tony Adams
TE Jeremy Ruckert
OT Conor McDermott

Ruckert likely becomes a healthy scratch again, like he was at the beginning of the season, with the Jets promoting Yeboah. The Jets aren’t going to call him up from the practice squad just to make him inactive and the Jets won’t have four tight ends dress, so Ruckert gets the inactive call.

The McDermott projection is based on the Jets perhaps feeling more likely to roll with recently signed Ogbuehi, who was signed partly due to the struggles of McDermott, as well as the growing number of injuries along the offensive line. The Jets could go the other way and make Ogbuehi inactive.

Jets vs. Packers preview and prediction

Check out our prediction for Green Bay week and drop your score predictions.

[sendtonews_embed video_id=”csL3cmTzmy-2295410-7498″]

The New York Jets are about to take their biggest stage of the season. They visit Lambeau Field to take on the Green Bay Packers and they’ll be featured as FOX’s Game of the Week as their No. 1 broadcast crew of Kevin Burkhardt and Greg Olsen will be on the call. Can the Jets pull off the upset? Let’s touch on the game a little bit and then make a prediction.

Without a doubt, the Jets know they have to find a way to stop Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers. While the offense as a whole isn’t as scary as it has been in years past with Davante Adams now in Las Vegas, Rodgers is still behind center for Green Bay, making the offense always a challenge. This is where the sensational cornerback duo of D.J. Reed and Sauce Gardner need to come up with another strong performance, maybe their best of the season.

They’ll be tasked with taking on Green Bay’s trio of Allen Lazard, Randall Cobb and Romeo Doubs. Christian Watson remains out with a hamstring injury. The combo of Reed and Gardner is good enough to hold the trio in check, meaning the Packers may need to get a guy like Robert Tonyan involved again and make the middle of the Jets defense make plays to get off the field and allow their offense to work.

That offense can have success against the Packers defense. Especially the run game. Fresh off totaling 197 yards last week in a 40-17 win over the Miami Dolphins, Breece Hall may be salivating to take on a Packers run defense that ranks 30th in DVOA. Only the Lions and Browns rank worse. Even with leaving the game briefly due to injury, Giants running back Saquon Barkley still ran for 70 yards on just 13 carries (5.4 yards per carry) with a touchdown.

The Jets offensive line can open up holes for Hall and Michael Carter and with Duane Brown and Alijah Vera-Tucker on the outside, have a chance to allow quarterback Zach Wilson to continue making plays and extend the success he has built up over the last five quarters. Especially if Packers defensive end Rashan Gary is unable to play.

Gary was added to Green Bay’s injury report Thursday with a toe injury and was limited Thursday and Friday. Head coach Matt LaFleur expressed some concern about the availability Sunday of Gary, who leads the Packers with five sacks and 19 pressures this season.

“It’s the next man up and the standard doesn’t change, but let’s face it, the guy is pretty impactful I’d say when he’s out on the grass,” said LaFleur this week. “Certainly he’s a guy that we definitely want in there. When he’s not in there I think you can feel the effects of that.”

If Gary can’t go, expect to see more of 2020 7th-round pick Jonathan Garvin and rookie 5th-round pick Kingsley Enagbare in his place. His loss would be a huge hit for the Packers and tilt the advantage arrow more in the Jets’ favor.

On the flip side of the line, the Packers still boast one of the top offensive lines in the NFL and that includes guard Jon Runyan Jr. His matchup against Jets star defensive lineman Quinnen Williams, as noted by Brandon Carwile of Packers Wire, figures to be quite a one-on-one battle that could help decide this game.

Runyan hasn’t allowed a pressure in 167 pass-blocking snaps in 2022. No other guard has done that with at least 33 reps in pass protection. Runyan has been dominant in his third season, but he is about to face his toughest matchup of the season. Williams has already logged three sacks and 17 pressures, which is tied for 7th among defensive linemen, according to Pro Football Focus. Most of Williams’ production has come against left guards, which means Runyan will have his hands full on Sunday.

If Williams can continue his incredible start to the season, the Jets can get the ball more into the hands of Wilson and company, who can get the ball into the hands of his playmakers, namely Corey Davis, Garrett Wilson and Elijah Moore. Their matchups with Packers cornerbacks Jaire Alexander and Rasul Douglas should be interesting ones. The Packers have gotten some flak over the seemingly passive style of defense from defensive coordinator Joe Barry, especially with the corners. The Jets’ wide receivers aren’t a group to be passive against, because they will make you pay.

But of course, it all comes back to Aaron Rodgers, who will keep the Packers in just about every game he plays. Could the Jets finally be heading in that direction with Zach Wilson? A strong performance Sunday will go a long way in making that a reality.

All in all, this should be a very interesting game and the spread feels a bit large. The Packers are angry after a disappointing performance in London where the only points they scored in the second half of their 27-22 loss came via an intentional safety from the Giants. However, the Jets can easily keep this game within the touchdown spread they are getting. In fact…

…they will do more than just keep this close.

Prediction: Jets 31, Packers 27
