Georgia football star DB Richard Lecounte makes first team defense

The USA Today has released their college football preseason All-America team for 2020 and UGA star safety Richard Lecounte makes the list.

The USA Today has released its preseason All-America team for 2020 and Georgia football is represented by senior safety Richard Lecounte on the first team defense.

Lecounte, from Riceboro, Georgia, is now the elder statesman in a strong Bulldog secondary.

As a junior in 2019, Lecounte finished ranked third on the team in tackles with 61 stops, while finishing tied in the SEC for interceptions with four and leading the league in fumbles recovered with 3.

Lecounte was a part of Georgia’s No. 1 ranked recruiting class of 2017. He was rated as the No. 2 safety overall, the No. 3 player in Georgia and the No. 25 ranked prospect overall, according to 247Sports.

A large part of Georgia’s record-setting defensive play in 2019 was due, in part, to Lecounte and his knack to always find the football.

Turnovers are always what coaches want from their secondaries, especially at the safety position and Lecounte does just that for the Bulldogs.

Here is the full list of the preseason All-America team for 2020, per the USA Today.

Report: Cincinnati Bengals WR, former Georgia football great A.J. Green dealing with hamstring injury

Cincinnati Bengals receiver A. J. Green has reportedly suffered a hamstring injury. Details here

Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green reportedly suffered a hamstring injury during Monday’s practice.

Jay Morrison of The Athletic reported the details –

“A.J. Green not in for this set of 11s. Was getting left hamstring looked at and stretched after last set of 7 on 7. He’s still on field. No ice. But appears done for the day.”

Obviously a big scare for both Bengals fans and DawgNation, because of Green’s season-ending ankle injury in July of last season.

One of the best receivers to ever dawn the red and black, Green has been one of the only bright spots for the Bengals since he was drafted No. 4 overall in 2011.

The good news, however, is the injury is now thought to be minor after a report by Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic involving comments from Bengals head coach Zac Taylor on Green’s injury.

Finally, Georgia football is back on the field! The practice field yes, but a field nonetheless.

Because media members were not allowed to watch Monday’s first preseason practice due to safety concerns, the program released this video clip highlighting a few key players like transfer quarterback Jamie Newman and highly touted freshman offensive lineman Broderick Jones.

Jamie Newman, Broderick Jones, James Cook, Nolan Smith, Jordan Davis and Richard LeCounte are just a few of the guys we can see in action here.

A few guys, however, did have to miss practice one due to injury.

Georgia coach Kirby Smart said in a press conference Sunday night that senior inside linebacker Monty Rice is limited with a foot injury, but ‘he’s taken a lot of reps and played a bunch.’

Also despite recent reports that he was cleared to resume practice, sophomore wide receiver Dominick Blaylock is still restricted due to an ACL tear suffered last season.

Smart said, “He is not completely clear to practice or play, he is going to have a black shirt on .”

Here is the full injury list for week one of preseason practice.

WR Dominick Blaylock (knee)

QB JT Daniels (knee)

LB Monty Rice (foot)

WR Arian Smith (knee)

DB Kelee Ringo (shoulder)

Georgia football play of the day – Georgia vs Clemson (2014)

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here!

It’s Monday, August 17 and today’s play of the day comes from Georgia versus Clemson in their 2014 match up, which featured the No. 16 Tigers against No. 12 Georgia at Sanford Stadium in Athens.

There were some great players in this one. Nick Chubb, Sony Michel, Malcolm Mitchell, Chris Conley, Lorenzo Carter, Leonard Floyd to name a few and oh, Todd Gurley too.

Gurley’s 2nd quarter kick-return score set up Georgia for a 45-21 win. The Tigers failed to score another point after Gurley’s score here. He finished with 198 yards rushing and two touchdowns.

Georgia football 2020 5-star CB signee Kelee Ringo has shoulder surgery

Georgia 5-star CB Kelee Ringo had surgery this week to repair a torn Labrum.

Georgia highly-touted freshman defensive back Kelee Ringo will miss some time this season after undergoing shoulder surgery this week to repair a torn labrum, sources told UGAsports.com

Ringo tweeted a prayer hands emoji and “a blessing in disguise” on Thursday afternoon.

Ringo was primed for some quality playing time in 2020. He is rumored to be one of the best defensive backs to ever sign at Georgia, but he will have to sit for a bit.

Labrum surgeries usually take 4-6 months to recover for athletes and guys usually make full recoveries.

Ringo should be back to full strength soon, but, for now, he will be learning the infamous Kirby Smart defense from the sidelines.

Report: Thursday’s SEC coaches call became contentious

Yahoo Sports’ Pete Thamel reported that at least 5 SEC coaches have shown frustration with the league about new schedule. Details here

According to Yahoo Sports college football reporter Pete Thamel, at least five SEC coaches are frustrated with how the SEC chose the two additional opponents added to each team’s conference-only schedule released last week.

So much so, that in a call between the SEC and coaches on Thursday, sources stated the conversation became contentious.

The SEC’s revised 2020 schedule included two additional SEC opponents  added to each team’s schedule and some programs seemed to benefit more than others.

For example, Georgia added Arkansas and Mississippi State from the West, while Missouri added LSU and Alabama.

Missouri, new coach and all, will have to face two of the top-five programs in the country on top of eight more league games.

The rest of the schedules – besides maybe Arkansas who added Georgia and Florida from the East – are mostly balanced, so It will be interesting to see if reports of contention between the league and its coaches escalate or if things are stifled right before play starts in September.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp on college football: “I want to see it played”

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp took to Twitter to give his statement on the current college football situation. Read his quotes here

With the Big Ten and Pac-12 electing to postpone their respective seasons to the spring of 2021, the SEC, ACC and Big 12 conferences are still scrambling to find a way to play football this fall.

A day after President Donald Trump said it would be a “tragic mistake” not to play football this fall, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp took to Twitter on Wednesday afternoon to give his statement on the prospect of college football in Georgia.

Kemp wrote:

“Across the South, college football is a sacred tradition, and I want to see it played this year if we can ensure the safety of players, coaches and staff.”

Kemp retweeted SEC commissioner Greg Sankey’s Tuesday tweet that came after the Big 10 and Pac-12’s postponement decision. Sankey said he “remains comfortable”, with the SEC’s approach to playing football during  the COVID-19 pandemic.

Although the league continues to deliberate how the season can go on, SEC practices are scheduled to begin Monday and, as of now, kickoff is slated for Sept. 26.

Georgia football play of the day – Georgia versus Missouri (2018)

Watch the Georgia football play of the day here!

It’s Tuesday, August 11 and today’s play of the day comes from Georgia at Missouri in 2018.

The Bulldogs came into this early-season SEC East match up undefeated and ranked No. 2 in the country, while Missouri, led by star quarterback Drew Lock, was also undefeated and looking to upset Georgia in Columbia for their first SEC win of the year.

It was Missouri’s ball from their own 25-yard-line and the score was 13-7, Georgia, with 5:45 left in the second quarter.

Watch what happened next here:

The Bulldogs went on to win 43-29, behind a great performance by the special teams and defensive unit, as both contributed points with a score of their own.

Just one highlight from Georgia defensive back Eric Stokes’ solid 2018 red-shirt freshman season. Now, in 2020, he is one of the top defensive backs in the country and has every bit of future first-round NFL Draft pick potential.
