Cincinnati officially applies to join the Big 12 conference

Cincinnati has officially submitted its application to join the Big 12 conference.

Although the Big 12 is losing its two marquee teams in Texas and Oklahoma, they are doing everything they can to preserve the conference.

In regards to a potential Big 12 expansion, the conference received great news on Wednesday. The Cincinnati Enquirer reported that the University of Cincinnati has officially applied to join the Big 12 conference.

The Bearcats’ application is expected to be accepted on Friday, but this is still early on in the process to leave the American Athletic Conference, which requires each team to provide a 27-month notice that they are departing. On top of that, Cincinnati would have to pay an exit fee.

Cincinnati has been one of the best Group of Five teams in the nation, and joining the Big 12 is a win-win scenario for both parties involved. The Bearcats are looking to become a national powerhouse, and joining a Power Five conference can help them get there. If the Bearcats can continue competing at this high of a level, they would stop getting snubbed from the College Football Playoff.

Adding Cincinnati not only gives the Big 12 the Ohio market, but it also opens up some doors recruiting wise for the remaining Big 12 teams.

This is significant news considering just a few weeks ago the Big 12 conference looked doomed. If they are able to add three more schools, which it has already been reported that they will pursue UCF, BYU, and Houston, then the Big 12 will continue to be a respectable conference.

Cincinnati is currently ranked No. 7 in the AP Poll, and are looking to be the first Group of Five team to make the College Football Playoff.

Report: Multiple NFL teams interested in former UGA DT Geno Atkins

Per Ian Rapoport, multiple NFL teams are interested in former Georgis football defensive tackle Geno Atkins.

Eight-time Pro Bowl selection Geno Atkins is currently a free agent, and it’s hard to believe that he has not yet been picked up by an NFL team looking for a veteran stud on the defensive line.

Coming off a torn rotator cuff that required surgery in January, the Bengals released Atkins on March 19. He has since remained a free agent.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, Dr. Dan Cooper, the Cowboys’ team physician, is scheduled to meet with Atkins in a few weeks. Atkins is expected to be ready to go in July.

“Multiple teams remain interested,” Rapoport adds. “He’ll be deliberate.”

Atkin, 32, was named first-team All-Pro twice, second-team All-Pro once and appeared in eight Pro Bowls while being named to the NFL’s 2010s All-Decade Team.

At Georgia (2006-2009), Atkins earned first-team All-SEC honors in 2007 and second-team All-SEC honors in 2009.

Georgia Bulldog great AJ Green returns to Bengals practice

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green suffered a hamstring injury over a week ago and is now returning to the practice field

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green suffered a hamstring injury over a week ago and is now returning to the practice field. Green, a former Georgia Bulldogs, is the No. 1 wide receiver for Joe Burrow and the Bengals’ offense.

Green’s injury was never considered severe, but it is good to see him back out there. The UGA product missed all of last season with an ankle injury.

A.J. Green has struggled off and on with injuries since the 2015 season. He’s only recorded one season (2017) with over 1,000 receiving yards since 2015.

If Green can stay healthy for Cincinnati, then he should have a great season. A.J. Green and the Bengals offense has a lot of weapons for top pick Joe Burrow.

Running back Joe Mixon and an improved offensive line should take some of the pressure off Joe Burrow. Burrow enters his rookie season after having a record setting season at LSU.

The Joe Burrow to A.J. Green connection could be something special. Burrow showed incredible accuracy, especially for jump balls during his time at LSU. A.J. Green is a man who has won his fair share of jump balls over the years. In fact, Green has 63 receiving touchdowns over his NFL career.

Report: Cincinnati Bengals WR, former Georgia football great A.J. Green dealing with hamstring injury

Cincinnati Bengals receiver A. J. Green has reportedly suffered a hamstring injury. Details here

Cincinnati Bengals receiver A.J. Green reportedly suffered a hamstring injury during Monday’s practice.

Jay Morrison of The Athletic reported the details –

“A.J. Green not in for this set of 11s. Was getting left hamstring looked at and stretched after last set of 7 on 7. He’s still on field. No ice. But appears done for the day.”

Obviously a big scare for both Bengals fans and DawgNation, because of Green’s season-ending ankle injury in July of last season.

One of the best receivers to ever dawn the red and black, Green has been one of the only bright spots for the Bengals since he was drafted No. 4 overall in 2011.

The good news, however, is the injury is now thought to be minor after a report by Paul Dehner Jr. of The Athletic involving comments from Bengals head coach Zac Taylor on Green’s injury.

Twitter reacts: former Georgia Bulldog AJ Green signs franchise tag

Cincinnati Bengals and former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver A.J. Green has signed the franchise tag.

Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver A.J. Green has signed the franchise tag. Green, a former Georgia Bulldog, was unable to hit NFL free agency this offseason.

Green signed the deal after he failed to reach to a contract extension with the Bengals before the July deadline.

Hopefully former LSU Tigers standout Joe Burrow will have success with A.J. Green, who has never won a playoff game in his NFL career. It’s not Green’s fault, but that could be motivation behind him thinking twice before signing a long-term extension with Cincinnati.

Here’s what No. 1 overall pick Joe Burrow said about A.J. Green at the NFL Combine:

Georgia football great Geno Atkins donates to help feed Cincinnati children

Georgia football great and Cincinnati Bengals star Geno Atkins donated to help feed local children amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Former Georgia defensive tackle Geno Atkins, an eight time pro-bowler with the Cincinnati Bengals, is doing his part to help out his local community amid the COVID-19 crisis.

According to Joe Danneman of FOX19, Atkins and his wife Kristen donated $100,000 to Freestore Foodbank. The donation will help to feed kids and families in the tri-state area.

From Danneman:

The gift will help provide up to 300,000 meals and will go directly to feeding families in southwest Ohio, Northern Kentucky and Southeast Indiana.

Atkins has been one of the league’s most consistent players since being drafted out of Georgia in 2010.

The son of former Saints and Dolphins safety Gene Atkins, Geno married his college sweetheart Kristen in 2016 in Buckhead.

More on the donation:

“We were sitting at home and saw a report on the local news about the increased demand at foodbanks due to the pandemic,” said Geno and Kristen in a statement. “The story tugged at our hearts imagining hard working people are now also worrying about what their families are going to eat.

We knew we had to help our local community. We have always supported Freestore Foodbank through various, and we know it’d be the most immediate and impactful first step to helping those in need during this unprecedented time.”
