Hawaii vs UNLV Game Preview

Why Hawaii Will Win

Okay, so UNLV finally got a win. It was against a miserable New Mexico team, but it was a win.

The offense still isn’t working.

The Rebels haven’t hit 360 yards in any game but the 433 yards against Fresno State, and it still has to prove it can get things moving on a consistent basis.

Hawaii hasn’t been playing all that well over the last several weeks, and not it can’t run at all. San Diego State and Utah State both stuffed the Rainbow Warriors on the ground, and so far this year they have to run to win.

Hawaii is 4-0 when hitting 200 rushing yards, and 0-6 when it doesn’t. UNLV has allowed over 200 rushing yards in two of the last three games.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why UNLV Will Win

Hawaii isn’t exactly getting its O moving.

It threw well against Utah State, and it’s showed the ability to grind away at times on both sides of the ball, but it’s been a wildly inconsistent team that’s not even close to as nasty when it’s not at home – it’s 1-4 on the road so far, and that one win is against New Mexico State.

UNLV was getting close before its win over New Mexico. It lost four straight by a touchdown or less before getting rolled by Nevada, but it always seemed to make the one big mistakes to screw it up.

Hawaii leads the nation with the most turnovers given away.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Can UNLV really come up with two wins in a row?

Hawaii managed to push San Diego State really, really hard, and it came up with a great win over Fresno State and …

It’s got a funky way of playing just well enough to make games interesting.

Yeah, Hawaii gives the ball away, but it also forces a ton of mistakes with multiple takeaways in six games. It’ll get at least two in this as UNLV misfires just enough to miss out on making it two in a row.

Air Force vs Colorado State Game Preview

Why Air Force Will Win

It’s always this simple. Is Colorado State stopping the run?

It’s great at generating a pass rush, but Air Force doesn’t really throw. It’s excellent at coming up with tackles for loss, but Air Force doesn’t allow all that many.

In general, Colorado State hasn’t been bad at holding down most ground attacks – it has more of an issue against good passing teams – and then came last week.

Wyoming hasn’t done much of anything offensively this year, but it rolled for almost 400 yards last week in a 31-17 win in Laramie.

Air Force might be coming off a tough loss against Army, but the team that managed close to 200 yards against the amazing San Diego State run D and leads the nation on the ground should have a decent day.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Colorado State Will Win

The Rams don’t screw up.

They don’t turn the ball over enough to matter, they’re great at getting the defense off the field in a hurry, and yeah, those plays in the backfield should matter.

The Rams haven’t faced too many high-powered rushing teams, but they should be able to push behind the line just enough to throw Air Force off of what it does. It might not come up with too many big stops, but it can throw off the timing.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Can Colorado State pull up out of the nosedive just in time to stay in the hunt for a bowl game?

Air Force will have an impossible time trying to pull away, and Colorado State will always seem like it’s right there with chances to take over, but the time of possession will matter.

Air Force will have the ball for well over 35 minutes and grind things out in the fourth quarter to get out alive.

Fresno State vs New Mexico Game Preview

Why New Mexico Will Win

The Lobos lost to a UNLV team/program that hadn’t come up with a victory in almost two full seasons, but they ran well.

Consider it a minor plus that they were able to generate their first 200-yard rushing day of the season – coming up with 260 yards – and they have to try controlling the clock as much as possible against a Fresno State team that’s going to try scoring in a hurry.

The Bulldogs get penalized a whole lot, they’re giving up a few rushing yards – allowing 187 in the blowout loss to Boise State – and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Fresno State Will Win

New Mexico doesn’t score.

It got 17 against UNLV, and that was a whole lot for a team that hadn’t scored more than 14 in the previous six games. The offense worked against Houston Baptist – relatively speaking – and New Mexico State, and then it failed to get to 300 yards over the next seven games.

Fresno State won’t take many chances, but the passing game should put up 250 yards or more without too much of an issue, and then everything is on cruise control because …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

New Mexico is last in the nation in first downs, third down conversions, and it’s the second-worst in scoring.

After getting rocked by Boise State last week, Fresno State will get it back in a hurry. It’ll take a quarter to get into a groove, and then the avalanche will come – it’s still in the hunt for the Mountain West, West Divison chase.

The Lobos won’t be able to score nearly enough to keep up after halftime.

San Diego State vs Nevada Game Preview

Why Nevada Will Win

Can the passing game do enough to get San Diego State out of its warm, cozy comfort zone?

This isn’t an Aztec team that can bomb away or get into any semblance of a shootout, but it’s got a killer defense that suffocates just about every style and every team except … Fresno State.

Utah wasn’t the Utah it is now when the Aztecs got the shocking win back in mid-September, and that’s been it when it comes to teams that can throw. Fresno State has the only offense with a high-powered passing game, and Jake Haener and company pulled off the 30-20 win with 247 passing yards.

Here comes Carson Strong and a Nevada offense that bombs away for over 300 yards before breakfast.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why San Diego State Will Win

Yeah, Nevada has the defensive front that should be able to hold up against the run, but it hasn’t faced a whole lot of teams that give it a try. And why? It’s because games tend to get out of hand in a hurry against the Wolf Pack and start throwing to keep up.

Kansas State was able to run 48 times against Nevada, and that was enough to control the game in a win. Boise State was stuffed on its 34 carries, but Fresno State ran 30 times for 205 yards and two scores in a win.

No other FBS team attempted 30 carries against Nevada, and both losses came when allowing over 200 yards.

San Diego State averages close to 40 carries per game and average 193 yards per outing, but …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

The winner still has work to do, but it’s going to be in the driver’s seat for the West Division title. Considering both teams lost to Fresno State – who’s one game behind both – the loser might be all but out with two conference games left.

In general, Nevada is too good against the run to get hammered on by the San Diego State attack.

Yeah, the Aztecs were great on the ground with five straight 200 rushing yards to start the season, but they haven’t come up with more than 165 yards in the last four games.

Nevada will get its passing game going just enough to make San Diego State start throwing a bit. That’s not going to be a plus.

Utah State vs San Jose State Game Preview

Why Utah State Will Win

Utah State is flying a bit under the Mountain West radar, but it’s leading the Mountain Division with three straight conference wins and with a chance to play for the conference title if it can win out.

The offense has been great on third downs, the downfield passing game has been terrific, and the production keeps on coming with 473 yards per game. San Jose State’s offense doesn’t have the pop or firepower to keep up the pace.

Logan Bonner is getting better and better. The former Arkansas State quarterback who followed Blake Anderson to Logan was good throughout the season, but he took things up a notch hitting over 70% of his passes for 720 yards and eight touchdowns over the last two games against Hawaii and New Mexico State.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why San Jose State Will Win

San Jose State gave Nevada a big push in a 27-24 loss last week.

The offense got QB Nick Starkel back, and it showed with 264 yards and three scores as the offense was able to hang around just enough to make it close.

The passing attack can’t bomb away if this gets crazy, but the offensive line is decent in pass protection and should give Starkel time to work. Utah State’s pass defense has struggled for most of the year, allowing over 200 yards in every game but two, and allowed over 900 yards in the last three games. But …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Utah State has proved it can win close games when the other side is throwing well.

The team has managed to do just fine in shootout wins over Air Force, and Colorado State, and North Dakota. It’s about to get into a back-and-forth fight that’s a whole lot of fun, and it’ll take one big step closer to winning the Mountain Division with Wyoming and New Mexico to follow.

Wyoming vs Boise State Game Preview

Why Wyoming Will Win

Well hello, running game. We missed you.

The Wyoming offense that didn’t do a thing for almost all of October all of a sudden starting running well. It motored on San Jose State in a loss, and followed it up with a terrific 385-yard day – with 166 yards from Titus Swen and a strong day from Xazavian Valladay – in a 31-17 win over Colorado State.

Boise State’s defense has been better over the last few games, but it allowed 200 yards or more four times this year including 307 yards against Air Force.

Throw in Wyoming’s normal tough defense that keeps games close, and the formula is working.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Boise State Will Win

The Boise State offense has finally found some consistency.

It struggled on the ground over the first part of the season, but it’s been able to manage 140 yards or more in three of the last four games to go along with a passing attack that’s keeping things moving.

Yes, the Wyoming defense has been fantastic – it hasn’t allowed 200 yards through the air since September 11th – but as long as Boise State is hitting its third down plays, that’s what will matter in this.

On the road, Wyoming is getting hammered against the run – all three of the 200-yard rushing games came away from Laramie.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Wyoming is playing better, and it’s putting up the rushing yards to give Boise State something to worry about, but it’s not going to run like it did against Colorado State.

It won’t be anything pretty, but slow, steady, and bit grindy will win the race. There will be enough Bronco balance to get by.

Cincinnati vs USF Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Alright, Cincinnati. Enough is enough.

The Bearcats haven’t exactly set the world on fire with everyone watching to see if they’re worthy of the high rankings and College Football Playoff consideration, but now they get a 2-7 USF team that shouldn’t be able to run the ball, has an inefficient passing game, and named to get past 400 total yards twice all yards – the wins over Temple and Florida A&M.

There’s no reason to take any wild chances here. Just start running against the porous Bull defensive front and keep it all going. USF has allowed 250 or more rushing yards in three of the last four games, and UC is WAY overdue to get back on track after struggling on the ground over the lsat three weeks since dominating UCF.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why USF Will Win

Cincinnati really isn’t playing all that well considering how good it is.

Wins are wins are wins, and it has managed to hold on, but Navy, Tulane, and Tulsa are all having problems this season and they all had too many good moments.

Cincinnati hasn’t hit 125 yards on the ground in any of the last three games, it’s not all that big on controlling the clock, and it’s coming off a three-turnover game against Tulsa.

USF stayed alive in the 54-42 loss to Houston with two kickoff returns for scores from Brian Battie, a little bit of a passing attack, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

USF isn’t playing all that poorly, but Cincinnati is so much better than it showed.

It’s coming – the Bearcats have too much explosion and too much production on the lines to continue to be so mediocre. USF will be jacked at home, it’ll play well for most of the first half, and then the Bearcat defense will take over.

The Cincinnati running game will look the part again as it dominates the last 20 minutes.

UCF vs SMU Game Preview

Why UCF Will Win

Give the Knights credit for battling back during a rough season after losing QB Dillon Gabriel early on. They’ve won three straight with the defense stepping up in a big way and with the passing game doing enough to get by.

It might not be pretty, and it might not be flashy, but RB Isaiah Bowser is running okay, the run defense has been terrific – it only struggled against Cincinnati – and now it gets to try powering away on the SMU D.

The Mustangs have mostly been okay against the run, but that’s because they’re getting destroyed through the air allowing close to 300 yards per game.

UCF won’t get that, but it’ll be effective.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why SMU Will Win

SMU might be able to bomb its way through.

UCF doesn’t have the same offensive explosion it normally does, and now it has to deal with a high-octane Mustang attack that’s going to throw better than anyone on the schedule so far.

SMU lost two straight, but Tanner Mordecai keeps on putting up numbers with 34 touchdowns on the year, lots of deep plays, and with the efficiency to keep things moving.

UCF can’t get behind in this, but …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

The UCF pass defense has been terrific.

Again, that’s partly because it hasn’t faced a slew of high-end passing teams, but it held down Memphis with three picks in a win, kept Cincinnati’s Desmond Ridder from doing much – at least through the air – and hasn’t allowed more than 215 yards in any of the last six games.

SMU will get this done thanks to a bit more offensive pop, but UCF will have its chances in the fourth quarter.

East Carolina vs Memphis Game Preview

Why East Carolina Will Win

The offense has taken care of business against the dregs of the American Athletic Conference, and now it’s time to step up another level and get bowl eligible.

The Pirates have been almost perfectly balanced with more than 200 yards rushing and passing, and now they get a Memphis defense that gives up just over 400 yards per game and has a big, big problem coming up with big plays and takeaways.

East Carolina might not be known for its defense, but it’s managing to step up on third downs while getting stronger as the year goes on. It hasn’t allowed more than 400 yards in any of its last four games, and that’s with a battle with Houston in the mix.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Memphis Will Win

Can the Memphis passing game take over?

Yeah, the East Carolina secondary has been terrific over last four games – it hasn’t allowed more than 200 yards in any of them with four picks. Now it gets the Tiger O.

Memphis hasn’t been great, but it’s managed to pull up out of out of the nosedive with well over 400 passing yards in two of the last four games – it should be able to bomb its way out of jams in this.

East Carolina’s offense isn’t moving the chains on third downs, the offensive front is having problems keeping defenses out of the backfield, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

This has been a strange year for both teams.

Memphis is grinding its way through, and East Carolina is starting to rely more and more on the defense and less on getting into shootouts.

The Pirates are more steady than sensational throwing the ball, but it’s running too well, controls the clock better, and does more to get into the backfield.

They’re about to get bowl eligible for the first time since 2014.

Houston vs Temple Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

Temple has been flat-out awful.

The offense hasn’t hit 300 yards in any of its last four games, the defense has fallen off a cliff, and it’s having a hard time cranking things up down the field or controlling games.

Meanwhile, Houston is just quietly rolling along.

The AAC might be all Cincinnati, Cincinnati, Cincinnati right now, but the Cougar defense is playing better, the pass rush is among the best in the country, and the offense is coming off of one of its best performances of the season in a 54-42 win over USF.

So what’s the problem?

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Temple Will Win

The Houston offensive line isn’t doing a great job of controlling defensive fronts that can get into the backfield.

Temple might not have much of a pass rush, but it’s not bad at getting behind the line. There’s a big problem against the run, but this might be the week the D gets a bit of a break against a Cougar ground game that sputtered a bit before going off on USF.

The Owls have to rise up and get the passing attack going. It had a few nice moments early in the year, and it’s going to have to push for well over 240 yards to pull this off.

They’re 3-0 when they get to 250 passing yards, 0-6 when they don’t.

What’s Going To Happen

Houston is playing too well.

It might not be perfect, and it could use better all-around play from the offensive front, but the world is going to start suggesting that the American Athletic Conference Championship could be a whole lot of fun.

The College Football Playoff-ranked Cougars are going to keep moving up.
