Georgia Southern vs Texas State Game Preview

Why Georgia Southern Will Win

Can the running game get going again?

The team is playing out the string before getting the Clay Helton era going, but it still has a dangerous enough running game to get going against a Texas State run defense that hasn’t been a rock.

Louisiana and ULM were able to throw well enough to not have to crank up the ground again, but the teams that want to run for 200 yards have been able to do it – the Bobcats are going up well over 400 yards per game overall.

No, the Georgia Southern running game hasn’t been amazing over the last few weeks, but going against Troy, South Alabama, Georgia State, and Coastal Carolina had a whole lot to do with that.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Texas State Will Win

It’s not that Georgia Southern isn’t pushing it – it battled hard against Troy and Georgia State in close games – but it’s having a hard time getting the O going.

Texas State is coming off a nice win over ULM with the passing game doing enough to get by, and it should go off on the Georgia Southern secondary.

No, the running game isn’t doing enough to control games, and it’s not doing enough to help out the beleaguered pass defense that’s getting lit up for close to 300 yards per game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Georgia Southern won’t be sharp enough.

The Texas State attack will throw well – even though the Eagles held Coastal Carolina to 85 yards last week – and should be able to overcome a few giveaways with enough takeaways of its own to get by.

It won’t be anything beautiful, but it’ll be two wins in a row with a victory in the home finale.

South Alabama vs Appalachian State Game Preview

Why South Alabama Will Win

Just one more win.

South Alabama has put together an interesting season with a strong defense that’s great against the run, good at getting off the field, and second in the conference in total D.

The style might not always be scintillating, but it’s effective.

The passing game is efficient, there aren’t a lot of mistakes, and the team controls the clock better than anyone in the Sun Belt. The team has the right blend of positives to bother Appalachian State, and now it’s just one more win away from being bowl eligible.

However …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Appalachian State Will Win

Yeah, the offense has been okay, and the defense has held firm, but the success has mostly worked against the mediocre teams.

South Alabama pushed Troy, and lost. It pushed Louisiana, and lost. It plays games close and tight, but it’s not always into opening things up and taking shots down the field – there aren’t a lot of big plays.

Appalachian State’s running game is roaring, ripping through Coastal Carolina and everyone else over the last several games but Louisiana – the lone loss since the defeat to Miami early in the season.

Louisiana and Texas State were able to run well on South Alabama, and App State will, too.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Yeah, South Alabama is just one win away from bowl eligibility, but after this is a trip to Tennessee before closing out against Coastal Carolina – it needs this. It won’t get it.

Appalachian State has to keep pressing. It’s in the driver’s seat for the Sun Belt East title, but it still has to deal with Troy before closing with Georgia Southern. It’s not going to run wild on the South Alabama defense, but it’ll be effective enough to control the clock against a team that has to control the time of possession battle.

Georgia State vs Coastal Carolina Game Preview

Why Georgia State Will Win

The offense isn’t the same without Grayson McCall.

The Coastal Carolina offense wasn’t the machine rolls over the mediocre teams, but it didn’t blow up against Appalachian State or Georgia Southern, and the yards didn’t produce a ton of points in the 35-28 win over Troy. Now the star quarterback is out, and veteran Bryce Carpenter is in.

The Chanticleers won 28-8 over Georgia Southern thanks to the defense and running game, but Carpenter threw for just 85 yards, and now gets a Georgia State defense that’s been solid overall against the pass.

It will give up 200 yards or so if everything is working, but it won’t get gouged.

The Georgia State rushing offense has been terrific – tearing off over 200 yards in each of the last four games and in six of the last seven.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Coastal Carolina Will Win

Coastal Carolina is still terrific.

It might not be the same without McCall, but the ground attack took over with 220 yards against Georgia Southern and ran for over 200 yards against everyone but Appalachian State.

There’s a good rotation, everyone is fresh, and the offense should be able to dink and dunk enough to keep things moving against a Georgia State team that doesn’t do a whole lot to control the clock.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

No, this isn’t the Coastal Carolina offense of the past few seasons, but it’s still good enough and the defense continues to be great.

Georgia State needs to run the ball – and it should – but it’ll come up just short as the second half rolls on. It’ll be a close, entertaining game that will come down to moving the chains.

Coastal Carolina will do it when needed, and Georgia State won’t.

UTEP vs North Texas Game Preview

Why UTEP Will Win

Time to get back on track.

The Miners have the Conference USA world there for the taking, but losses to Florida Atlantic and UTSA in back-to-back weeks all but ended that.

Whatever. UTEP is going bowling.

The Miners continue to be the best in the league at third down defense, the line is getting into the backfield, and the offensive front is giving everyone time to work.

North Texas might have cranked up the offense against a sad Southern Miss team, but the passing game isn’t efficient, the defense doesn’t come up with third down stops, and the running game that’s been so strong now has to go up against a UTEP defense that’s been a rock until dealing with UTSA.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why North Texas Will Win

The Mean Green running game is rolling.

They have a slew of smallish, quick backs who can all come up with yards in chunks, and they did that with 321 yards last week, they’re averaging a Conference USA-high 228 yards per game, and the O is working with 12 touchdowns over the last four weeks.

The defense has’t been great, but it’s not getting gouged. As good as UTEP is, it’s not putting up big numbers – it hasn’t scored more than 28 since September 4th.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

North Texas is trending up with two straight road wins, and offense that’s finally starting to do what it wants, and with a schedule that’s more manageable. It lost six straight games before the recent two wins, but it was supposed to lose all six.

UTEP is playing well on the lines, the downfield passing games are there, and it’ll grind through with a good day from the run defense to stop the current slide.

UAB vs Marshall Game Preview

Why UAB Will Win

UAB needs this to stay in the mix for the Conference USA title. Win this week, and then next week against UTSA might decide the West – even with UTEP to close things out.

The offense has been a tad too inconsistent, but it’s cranking up well over 400 yards per game over the last few weeks with a whole lot of big plays downfield and the ability to score in chunks.

When the Blazers run well, forget it. They’re 3-0 when running for 190 yards or more, and Marshall allows a Conference USA-worst 209 rushing yards per game.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Marshall Will Win

UAB has a passing attack, but Marshall’s it a whole lot better.

There isn’t enough of a consistent ground attack, but Grant Wells is airing it out for 300 yards on a regular basis. If UAB wants to make this a shootout, fine.

Even with the problems against the run, the Thundering Herd have won four straight including a huge victory over Florida Atlantic last week. They’re doing a great job on third downs, the offensive line is doing a decent enough job to get by, and the penalty issue won’t be a problem this week.

No one in America gets hit for more penalty yards than UAB.

If Marshall can win this and get by Charlotte, the regular season finale against WKU should be to see who wins the East.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

No, this might not be a preview of the Conference USA Championship – it’s a little too funky for the loser of this to still get in – but it’s not going to be far off.

Both teams have done a great job of beating the mediocre, both teams have a shocking loss on the resumé, and both teams have something big to prove here.

UAB always seems to come through when needed in games like this, but the Marshall passing game will be a wee bit too sharp at home. The defense will hold up late to put this away.

Florida Atlantic vs Old Dominion Game Preview

Why Florida Atlantic Will Win

The Owls can get bowl eligible with a win, but there’s more to the season than that. They need a Marshall loss after losing last week, but if they win this and beat WKU next week, the Conference USA East race gets really, really interesting.

The defense has been among the best in the conference, it has a way of coming up big when it has to, and it’ll lock down on the downfield passing game – Old Dominion doesn’t really have one.

The Florida Atlantic ground game has been great, the offense has been balanced, and overall it’s strong enough on third downs to maintain control of the game.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Old Dominion Will Win

The Monarchs are on a two-game winning streak and now want to make a huge statement.

The running game has been terrific at times – rolling for over 200 yards in two of the last four games – to do a nice job of controlling games and converting on third downs.

Florida Atlantic’s defense might be great, but there isn’t enough of a pass rush to matter, the offensive line isn’t great in pass protection, and it’s a fast attack – it doesn’t control the clock.

The Owls aren’t going to come out and hang 50 on the board. The ODU defense should be just enough to at least keep this close.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Just how good is Old Dominion?

It was able to push Marshall and UTEP, and it’s been more than competitive enough to give Florida Atlantic a fight.

The Owls have been a wee bit inconsistent, and they’ve mostly been beating the mediocre to sad teams on the slate. This should be close, entertaining, and it’ll come down to the final drive.

Florida Atlantic takes the ball away, and Old Dominion doesn’t.

FIU vs Middle Tennessee Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

The offense continues to be fun.

It’s not consistent, and it doesn’t move the chains well enough, but there’s a passing game Middle Tennessee has to worry about. The Golden Panthers have thrown for 260 yards or more in five of the last six games, and they’re about to push for 300 yards because they’ll have to.

They bomb deep – they’re averaging close to 17 yards per throw – and Middle Tennessee doesn’t have the pop with a new quarterback after losing Chase Cunningham a few weeks ago.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Middle Tennessee Will Win

Just win the turnover battle.

The Blue Raiders couldn’t force enough mistakes to matter against WKU in a 48-21 loss, and it was the opposite. They lead the nation with 25 takeaways, but they didn’t come up with any last week and they turned it over seven times.
Fortunately, they’re going against a defense that never, ever takes the ball away – FIU has only come up with six takeaways.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Can this be when FIU finally gets its first win over an FBS team?

Middle Tennessee has turned the ball over 11 times in the last two games, but the D was able to make up for it in the win over Southern Miss. In this, run, run, run, don’t take any deep shots, and assume the pass defense will come up with enough takeaways to matter.

Charlotte vs Louisiana Tech Game Preview

Why Charlotte Will Win

It’s been a rocky and inconsistent season, but the 49ers are a win away from getting bowl eligible.

The passing game has been good enough to carry a spotty running game. Getting to 200 yards through the air doesn’t guarantee anything with this team, but it saved the day in the win over Rice last week, and this week it should rip apart a Louisiana Tech secondary that can’t stop anyone from throwing well.

Charlotte doesn’t have to bomb away. It’s great at controlling the clock, and Louisiana Tech isn’t – expect the 49ers to have the ball for well over 35 minutes.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Louisiana Tech Will Win

Throw, throw, and throw some more.

The running game hasn’t shown up and the passing attack hasn’t been great, but it can hit 300 yards – it did it three times this year and should be able to get to at least 250.

The Charlotte defense doesn’t do enough in the secondary and it’s not always a rock at getting off the field. It’s allowing 225 passing yards or more in each of the last four games, getting rocked by FIU for 466 and by WKU for close to 400.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Charlotte’s about to lock in a bowl game.

Louisiana Tech doesn’t run well enough, but it’s able to take the ball away a little bit. It’ll come up with two takeaways to keep the game close, and the offense will be balanced against a mediocre 49er defense, but it won’t be enough.

You beat Charlotte by running, and the Bulldogs won’t be able to do it.

Charlotte is 5-0 when scoring 31 points or more, and 0-4 when it doesn’t. Louisiana Tech allows 34 points per game.

UTSA vs Southern Miss Game Preview

Why Southern Miss Will Win

The defense hasn’t been all that bad considering it’s not getting a lick of help from the offense.

The Golden Eagle defense has to come up with a slew of takeaways and it needs to keep holding up against the pass. The D is good at holding up in the red zone – it’s not letting games get too out of hand – and it should be able to get off the field just enough to give the O a few chances.

But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why UTSA Will Win

The Southern Miss offense isn’t doing much of anything, and now the defense is wearing down.

Good for the first part of the year against the run, now the Golden Eagles are getting ripped to shreds, allowing 200 yards or more in two of the last three games with 321 yards allowed in the loss to North Texas last week.

UTSA’s offense is a machine. It’s not giving up the big turnovers, the running game has been consistent, and Southern Miss – thanks to an offensive line that’s having a nightmare of a time keeping defenses out of the backfield – isn’t going to be able to keep up.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

Southern Miss has the nation’s worst scoring offense averaging fewer than 14 points per game. UTSA should have that after two drives as it gets one step closer to taking the West title. If it wins and if UAB loses to Marshall, it’s off to the Conference USA championship.

WKU vs Rice Game Preview

Why WKU Will Win

The passing game continues to be devastating.

It didn’t even go ballistic against Middle Tennessee last week and the Hilltoppers were still able to win easily. On a four-game winning streak, they’re a win away from being bowl eligible all while still being in the mix for the Conference USA championship.

They win this and beat Marshall next week, and they’re the East champs.

Does Rice have the passing game to keep up the pace? Not even close. They’re throwing reasonably well, but the pass defense has been rocky and the defense isn’t calming down hard enough – it’s not taking the ball away and has a tough time against midrange passing attacks.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why Rice Will Win

SLOWWWWWWWWWW.

No, Rice doesn’t have the defense to keep up with Bailey Zappe and the WKU offense, but it’s putting up over 200 passing yards pre game without a problem lately and balanced things out on the ground in last week’s loss at Charlotte.

To do this, though, the O has to have the ball for close to 40 minutes and get this into the fourth quarter close. Rice leads Conference USA in time of possession, and WKU is among the worst in the nation at controlling the clock.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

The Hilltoppers will have a few more problems than it might like. Rice will be able to keep this relatively close for a while by grinding down the clock, but it’ll all burst open for a scoring stretch for a WKU attack that can’t be held down by this secondary.
