Most intriguing transfer portal options at defensive tackle

Most intriguing transfer portal options at defensive tackle #GoBucks

We already broke down our expectations for how Ohio State could handle the quarterback position (which it has handled) and then dove into the possible running backs (which it has also handled). We also recently covered the wide receiver position (if things break a certain way), tight ends, and offensive tackleguards, and of course, the center position that was also already addressed by the staff. But now, we have also moved onto the defensive side of the ball and hit on the defensive ends and we want to now dive into the interior at defensive tackle.

Again, as we have been saying, we are pretty late into the portal game, but I wanted to highlight some guys that would have been interesting fits for Ohio State and a few that may still be available. The big takeaway on this list is that the Michigan State Spartans are making moves to keep some of their best studs, but let’s dive into the list.

Former Georgia WR Jeremiah Holloman declares for NFL draft

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Jeremiah ‘JJ’ Holloman is entering the draft

Former Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver Jeremiah ‘JJ’ Holloman is declaring for the 2023 NFL draft. Holloman transferred from Florida International to Tennessee State for the 2022 college football season.

The 6-foot-2, 220-pound receiver caught 33 passes for 353 yards at Tennessee State this year.

Holloman intended to transfer to Liberty for the 2021 college football season, but he was unable to work out differences with FIU. Holloman hauled in eight passes for 108 yards and a touchdown in 2020 for FIU in its pandemic-shortened season.

Holloman last played for Georgia in 2018, when he developed good chemistry with quarterback Jake Fromm. Holloman was in line to be Georgia’s top receiver in 2019, but he was dismissed from the team. Georgia never quite adapted to his absence that season.

FIU Panthers Preview 2022

It was supposed to work better than that.

FIU had the coach in Butch Davis who knew Miami, there was just enough talent to make a splash, and the program was supposed to take steps forward and become a bigger factor. Instead, the 2021 season opened with a win over Long Island, and that was it.

The offense was a total disaster as the season went on, the defense never showed up, and the turnaround season led to a regime change and a total reboot.

The 2019 team shocked Miami late in the season on the way to a bowl game. Since then it’s 1-17 with just that lone victory over the Sharks.

Enter Mike MacIntyre and with him comes hope.

He did the absolute impossible and made San Jose State great going from 1-12 when he first took over in 2010 to 10-2 two years later.

He did the almost impossible and pushed Colorado through three tough seasons to 10-4 in 2016. He wasn’t able to sustain the success, but the Buffs were hardly awful in the two years before he was canned.

Now he has another tough mountain to climb. It’s not going to happen overnight, but he’s a good defensive coach who should at least make the Panthers more competitive.

FIU Panthers Preview 2022: Offense

The FIU offense couldn’t move the chains, the running game didn’t exist, and the offensive line didn’t give anyone time to work. New offensive coordinator David Yost knows how to get a passing game going and he knows how to coach up quarterbacks, coming off a few years at Texas Tech and known for his time as a star assistant at Missouri under Gary Pinkel.

This is going to take a bit. FIU is starting from scratch, but the up-tempo attack will be fun, and …

There are new parts of the passing game that should work. Gunnar Holmberg isn’t going to be Aaron Rodgers, but he’s a veteran quarterback from Duke who should settle the position … maybe. Haden Carlson and Grayson James are getting every shot at the gig.

Leading receiver Tyrese Chambers is back along with former USF transfer Randall St. Felix to go along with Sharod Johnson (Syracuse) and Jacolby Hewitt (Indiana). The passing attack that averaged 265 yards per game should keep going. But …

The offensive front has to be night-and-day better. Two starters are back, and there’s size and a little help from the transfer portal, but this group was a major problem with nothing happening in pass protection and little help for the ground game.

The backs are okay, but they need room. Lexington Joseph averaged 4.8 yards per carry -the backs should average close to five yards per pop. Now the line has to keep the quarterback from getting hit to keep that rushing average from nosediving.

FIU Panthers Preview 2022: Defense

New defensive coordinator Jovan Dewitt has been around the block – he was a linebackers coach at Nebraska and North Carolina over the last few years -and he knows the south Florida area. Job One is to generate pressure for a D that was the third-worst in college football overall, didn’t force takeaways, and allowed close to 40 points per game.

There are a few okay parts coming back, and it starts with the defensive front. There’s not a lot of size, but all things considered, there’s a little bit of experience to play around with. Someone has to help 6-1, 263-pound end Davon Strickland make more plays behind the line, and there has to be a good rotation to hold up inside.

The secondary didn’t do a whole bunch, but it had good corners in Richard and Rishard Dames. They’re gone, but the young safeties are back starting with Jamal Potts and Demetrius Hill bringing good size and a little bit of experience.

Gaethan Bernadel made 44 tackles from one linebacker spot, but this is one of the team’s thinnest areas considering the D would like to work around a 4-3 as much as possible.

Holloman was expected to be Georgia’s No. 1 wide receiver for the 2019 season, but he was dismissed from the team. Georgia never quite adapted to his absence that season.

Now, Holloman will have a new chance to prove himself with Tennessee State. Former NFL legend Eddie George is now the head coach at Tennessee State.

Tennessee State has notable 2022 games against Jackson State, Middle Tennessee, and Eastern Washington.

Miles Frazier discusses why he left FIU, what he wants in a new program

Miles Frazier opens up on why he’s leaving FIU and what he is looking for in a program.

[mm-video type=playlist id=01fc3gzhz7qrm49z6q player_id=none image=https://rutgerswire.usatoday.com/wp-content/plugins/mm-video/images/playlist-icon.png]

Miles Frazier is one of the hottest names in the transfer portal right now, the former FIU offensive lineman is looking to make an impact immediately for wherever he ends up. He also wants a place that will give him support.

Something, Frazier says, that he didn’t necessarily feel he got at FIU, leading him to transfer.

“So to make a long story short, when I had committed here after prep school when I had signed a National Letter of Intent, my offensive line had left,” Frazier told ‘Rutgers Wire.’

[lawrence-related id=]

“At that point, I still had a good relationship – with my head coach and the offensive coordinator, I think but I wasn’t really versed about the issue of my coach leaving so I stayed away. I’ve been here for two years, played 17 games here. I would never regret going here for anything. But I feel as though as a program, the coaches are great coaches. But the administration and university – they don’t give us the tools to succeed at the highest level. So that was the first part of the reason. The second part of the reason: I’m trying to look I’m trying to find a program that would be the best…where I can help them win a championship, bowl games, those games and they can help me develop as a man outside of football…as a person, like as a football player.

“And last but not least, I want a degree that really holds weight in society and in the world.”

As of Tuesday night, Frazier held 25 offers and was expecting at-home visits this week from Arizona State and Florida State. From Camden, N.J., Frazier will take an unofficial visit this weekend at Rutgers.

He is planning on visiting North Carolina and North Carolina State next weekend.

The type of program doesn’t matter too much to Frazier nor does location. Support and environment are very important to him. And it doesn’t matter to him if it is a winning team or a rebuilding program.

[lawrence-related id=4932]

“Either winning programs or helping a team. I like a challenge, but at the same time I’m all about winning in like my mindset,” Frazier said.

“So with different teams and me I’m definitely looking for playing time and perhaps starting on next school, and I don’t want anything given to me. I would like to earn it so basically like either way, like even if the program has losing and I can try to help rebuild, or even if they have been winning, and I can help them continue to have success. I definitely want to definitely start, to compete and start where I can help.”

Southern Miss vs FIU Game Preview

Why FIU Will Win

Southern Miss is one of the few teams that has a harder time moving the chains than FIU does.

The Golden Eagles pulled off a win over Louisiana Tech for the first victory of the year over an FCS team, but the five takeaways had a whole lot to do with that.

The USM offensive front has a nightmare of a time keeping teams out of the backfield, the offense is the second-worst in America averaging just 250 yards a game, and turnover as a huge issue.

The O has given it up 28 times on the year – the second most in America – with 13 in the last four games. But …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why Southern Miss Will Win

Southern Miss is taking the ball away.

The defense hasn’t been bad overall. It’s okay against the run, it’s second in Conference USA against the pass, and considering there’s little to no pass rush, it’s not the problem.

Again, the five takeaways against Louisiana Tech were the difference in the win last week, and the D has 12 takeaways in the last four games.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

FIU doesn’t do anything to generate takeaways.

Even with a good passing game that hits a slew of shots down the field, the Golden Panthers have been obliterated in each of the last four games and haven’t come within 11 points of anyone since the 31-27 loss at Central Michigan.

The woeful and painfully disappointing FIU season comes to a merciful end.

North Texas vs FIU Game Preview

Why North Texas Will Win

Where did this come from?

All of a sudden, North Texas went from being mired in a lost season to being two wins away from a bowl appearance. The regular season finale is against UTSA – there might be a hard stop to the fun next week – but it can make this interesting by getting though the free space game.

FIU is a total mess. Head coach Butch Davis is done, interim head man Ron Cooper has to try piecing things together for a team on a nine-game losing streak. The last six losses have all been ugly blowouts, there are too many turnovers, nothing is happening on defense, and the scoring pop from earlier in the year has gone away.

North Texas has cranked up the offensive efficiency, the ground game should be able to go off, and …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why FIU Will Win

Maybe the change in coaches and the drama could serve as something of a positive.

It’s been one of the strange phenomenons over the season. With the distractions and pressure gone, teams have been playing well in the first game after losing the head coach.

There are some positives with FIU. The passing game can push the ball down the field, the North Texas defense is hardly a rock, and if the O can chill on the turnovers after giving it up eight times in the last three games, this might be close.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

FIU will play a little bit better, but it won’t quite be enough.

There’s a reasonable chance FIU can pull off a win next week against a miserable Southern Miss team, and this will be a step towards that. The Mean Green offense will be too solid and too productive in the second half, but FIU will have its chances to make this interesting.
