North Carolina receives boost for next season as five-star guard reclassifies

The North Carolina Tar Heels received some big news on Tuesday morning in regards to their roster for next season.

The North Carolina Tar Heels men’s basketball team received a big boost to their 2023-2024 fortunes on Tuesday as it was announced that five-star guard Elliot Cadeau will reclassify from the 2024 recruiting class to the 2023 recruiting class.

Cadeau’s decision doesn’t come as a huge surprise – rumors and speculation has been spreading that such a decision could be made for quite some time. Cadeau announced his decision on Twitter.

As pointed out by Tar Heels Wire, he’ll join a Tar Heel’ backcourt that includes R.J. Davis, Seth Trimble, Cormac Ryan, and Simeon Wilcher.

Cadeau is considered by most of the recruiting industry as a five-star prospect with Rivals ranking him the highest of any service, as the eighth-best player in the country.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound point guard plays for Link Year and is a native of Branson, Missouri. He committed to the Tar Heels over offers from Baylor, Kansas, Maryland, Syracuse, Tennessee, Texas, and Texas Tech among others. He only took a pair of official visits in his recruitment, one to North Carolina and one to Texas Tech.

The Tar Heels are coming off a 20-13 season in 2022-2023 which included an 11-9 record in conference play. After starting the season as the No.1 team in the country, the Tar Heels failed to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2009-2010. They’ll enter their third season under head coach Hubert Davis this fall. Despite this past season’s struggles, expect the Tar Heels to once again be among the top-25 teams in the country come next preseason and a Darkhorse title favorite.

College basketball recruiting: Matthew Gilhool showcases why he is a national recruit

Matthew Gilhool shows that he is a complete power forward.

At the Under Armour Next Session II, Matthew Gilhool was one of the standout performers. Offered by Rutgers basketball, Gilhool showcased his range and ability on offense, underscoring why he is such a highly-sought after recruit.

Gilhool is a talented forward from the Westtown School (Elizabethtown, PA). He is a three-star and ranked as the No. 188 player in the nation in the On3 composite rankings.

He currently holds offers from Rutgers, Maryland, Miami, Mississippi State, Penn State, Virginia Tech, La Salle and Temple among others. The Temple offer was the most recent for Gilhool and came in early May

At the Under Armour event, Gilhool showed some range with the ability to shoot from deep. But he also banged around effectively in the paint, using his length well. He finds space, posts up and has confidence when he turns and puts the ball on the floor.

He is athletic and strong when driving to the basket:

A member of the 2024 recruiting class, Gilhool could well make a move up the rankings following his performance at the Under Armour event.

The Rutgers recruiting class is currently the second-highest ranked class in the nation according to 247Sports. It features five-star Airious Bailey along with two four-star commits in Lathan Sommerville and Dellquan Warren.

Top-25 recruit arrives on campus for official visit to Florida

Florida is hosting a top-25 player in the class of 2024 over the weekend on an official visit, and he’s officially checked in from Gainesvile.

Four-star class of 2024 point guard [autotag]Dedan Thomas Jr[/autotag]. arrived on campus at the University of Florida for his official visit on Saturday, according to Jake Weingarten of Stockrisers.

Swamp247’s Jacob Rudner checked in with Thomas before the visit and learned that his decision will come down to comfortability when all is said and done.

“I just feel like for me to make a decision it’s going to be more of a feeling thing than anything,” Thomas said. “I want to get a feel for the place and see how comfortable I am.”

Thomas took officials visits to Arizona, Houston, Gonzaga and UCLA in 2022, but he’s saved the Gators for last.

This is Thomas’ first trip to Gainesville despite being in contact with the program since [autotag]Todd Golden[/autotag] took over. He met Golden at a camp in 2021 and has kept in contact with him, and Thomas knows associate coach Carlin Hartman extremely well after his younger brother played with Hartman’s son under him while they were in Las Vegas.

Those relationships should help out, but that’s what Florida has been leaning on for some time now. To seal the deal, the Gators will have to show him that Florida is the best fit. Thomas knows he’ll get a chance to play early at Florida with points guards [autotag]Kyle Lofton[/autotag] and [autotag]Myreon Jones[/autotag] moving on from the college ranks next season, but he has to feel comfortable at the university to succeed.

There’s talk of Thomas reclassifying to the class of 2023 and joining the team next year, but that’s something he is still considering.

The 247Sports composite ranks him at No. 24 overall and at No. 4 among point guards in the country. He’s also the top-ranked player in Nevada from the class of 2024.

Florida basketball adds Australian center to 2023 recruiting class

The Gators earned a commitment from 6-foot-11 center Alex Condon from Australia this week.

Todd Golden has landed his second commit from the class of 2023, 6-foot-11-inch Australian center [autotag]Alex Condon[/autotag], according to 247Sports.

Condon took an official visit to the University of Florida in January and couldn’t believe the atmosphere in an SEC area. Seeing Gators fans cheer on the Orange and Blue as they beat the Missouri Tigers was enough to convince him that Gainesville was home.

“I chose Florida because I believe that it was the best fit for me,” Condon said. “They are great people and the new coach is young and enthusiastic. Everyone was really welcoming and I got to meet all of the boys. It was an impressive school from the start of the visit to the end.”

Although it may take some time for Condon to find his footing at Florida, he’ll join the team right after it loses [autotag]Colin Castleton[/autotag], who is also 6-foot-11-inches. Replacing the size is good for Golden and Co., but even better is that Condon sees himself stepping into Castleton’s role seamlessly.

“They got Collin Castleton who has done really well at Florida at been super successful,” he said. “They play through him quite a lot, which I saw in the Missouri game, so he said he sees me who can follow in his footsteps and they want to play through me a lot, through passing in the post, making moves off the dribble and things like that. Also, it’s a fast style they play and so for a 6-foot-11 guy, I move pretty well. He (Golden) thinks I can play serious minutes next season, as well.”

Condon joins three-star power forward [autotag]Thomas Haugh [/autotag] in the Gators’ 2023 recruiting class. While 247Sports has yet to give Condon a rating, he’s known as a high-IQ player who screens and rolls to the rim with finishing ability. He’s also a strong rebounder, which should come naturally with his height.

WATCH: Highlights and comments from Tom Izzo on each recruit from MSU’s 2021 class

The class ranks No. 6 in 247Sports for 2021 — which is only second to Michigan in the Big Ten.

Michigan State Basketball wrapped up one of Tom Izzo’s best classes of all-time on Wednesday, when Jaden Atkins, Pierre Brooks II and Max Christie all signed their National Letters of Intent to become Spartans.

The class ranks No. 6 in 247Sports for 2021 — which is only second to Michigan in the Big Ten. Keep in mind that ranking could rise even higher if 2022 star recruit Emoni Bates reclassifies to the 2021 class.

“In summing these three players up, you’ve got great student-athletes, you’ve got great size for their positions and people who can play both ends of the court,” Izzo said in a press release provided by MSU Athletics on Wednesday. “I think a really encouraging thing is they are guys that can shoot the ball, but I think they are guys that want to win and guys that want to be here. That, to me, is more valuable than anything.”

MSU also published some really interesting welcome videos for each recruit on Wednesday evening, including highlights and comments on each recruit from Izzo. Get a closer look at each of the new Spartans below:
