UCLA All-American inducted into College Basketball Hall of Fame

A former two-time UCLA champion was honored this week.

This week, a former UCLA Bruin and two-time NCAA national champion was inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame‘s class of 2024.

Dave Meyers, a UCLA power forward from 1972-1975, joined eight former Bruins in the Hall of Fame after a storied collegiate career. Though posthumously, Meyer’s induction honors his legacy in Westwood.

Meyers won two national titles with the Bruins in 1973 and 1975 under legendary head coach John Wooden. At UCLA, Meyers totaled a whopping 1,051 points on 48.5 percent shooting from the floor, earning him a consensus All-American nod with UCLA in 1975.

Moreover, on February 17th, 1975, during his hardware-laden season with the Bruins, Meyers was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated.

After declaring for the NBA Draft, Meyers was drafted with the second overall pick by the Los Angeles Lakers before being traded in a package to the Milwaukee Bucks in a package that included fellow UCLA alumni Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

Meyers passed away after a short battle with cancer in 2015 but will now be forever enshrined in the College Basketball Hall of Fame.

Top 10 Notre Dame men’s basketball players according to ChatGPT

Let’s see what AI knows about Irish men’s hoops.

For the past few months, I’ve heard quite a bit about the AI information bot known as ChatGPT. It was the subject of an episode during this past season of “South Park”. More importantly, I’ve heard how it’s such a game-changer that writing jobs are done for. We’ll see about that as I’m not too worried about it, but then again, I’m sure newspaper employees said the same thing about the internet in the mid-1990s.

When our editor Nick Shepkowski decided to ask ChatGPT what it thought Notre Dame’s 10 best football players were, I decided to follow suit and ask the same question but for the 10 best men’s basketball players instead. Keep in mind that even the bot knows this list is subjective:

“Please note that there are many other outstanding players who have played for Notre Dame and could also be included on this list.”

So keep that in mind as you go over the following list, which also includes ChatGPT’s description of each player:

Former Auburn star Charles Barkley discusses his TV contract

Barkley is close to stepping away from broadcasting.

Former Auburn Tigers star basketball player Charles Barkley will likely be looking forward to retirement life. He joined Turner Network Television (TNT) in 2000 as part of their NBA coverage. Barkley retired from the NBA following his five-year stint with the Houston Rockets, which ended in 2000.

“That’s probably going to be it for me”, Barkley stated in regards to his contracting ending in two years. “It’s been a great, great thing. I love Ernie (Johnson), Kenny (Smith), Shaq (O’Neal), and everybody we work with. But I just don’t feel the need to work until the day I die. I don’t, man. I’ll be 61 years old if I finish out my contract.”

“And I don’t want to die on TV. I want to die on the golf course or somewhere fishing.” Barkley went on to make a playful jab at his friend Shaq about his weight.

Barkley was drafted by the Philadelphia 76ers in the 1984 NBA draft at No. 5 overall after four years with Auburn. His No. 34 jersey was retired by his alma mater. He was named SEC Player of the Year in 1984 and the SEC Tournament MVP for his efforts. Barkley would be inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.

He would go on to enjoy a 16-year NBA career with three teams. The five-time All-NBA forward never won the championship. He came close before he ran into some guy named Michael Jordan. They appeared together in the ‘Space Jam’ movie.

For Barkley, I am sure he is looking forward to spending more time on the golf course in the next several years after he steps away from broadcasting.
