Keep track of every Vikings cut and trade here

The Minnesota Vikings are on the path to finalizing their 53-man roster.

By 3 pm central time on Tuesday, August 29th, every team in the National Football League will need to be down 53 players on the roster. Once that happens, anyone with less than four years of National Football League experience will be placed on waivers until 12 pm central time on Wednesday, August 30th. Those players who have 4+ years of vested experience are released and can sign with a team immediately

There were a lot of players for the Vikings that were firmly on the bubble and they had a chance to shine on Saturday afternoon against the Arizona Cardinals. Last season, the Vikings didn’t just do their roster cuts and form their practice squad, they also traded for Jalen Reagor and Ross Blacklock.

What will they do this year? Keep track of every roster move the Vikings make to get down to the magical number of 53.

Report: Vikings release tight end Colin Thompson

The tight end room sees its first cut casualty

The Minnesota Vikings continue their roster cuts on Monday morning. According to Fan Buzz’s Matt Lombardo, the Vikings have released tight end Colin Thompson.

The Vikings brought in Thompson to be a backup tight end and emergency long snapper. He has NFL experience with the Carolina Panthers over the past three seasons with 26 games played in 2020 and 2021.

The tight end room was one of the deepest on the team. T.J. Hockenson and Josh Oliver are a dynamic duo at the top who should strike fear into defenses when they get into 12 personnel.

Thompson had a hard path to making the Vikings roster with Johnny Mundt, Nick Muse and Ben Sims ahead of him.

Stay tuned to Vikings Wire for more roster moves ahead of cutdown day.

A familiar face found a new home on Monday morning.

As first reported by NFL insider Jordan Schultz, tight end Colin Thompson is signing a one-year deal with the Minnesota Vikings. Thompson had been a member of the Carolina Panthers for the last three seasons.

The Philadelphia, Pa. native landed with the Panthers in 2020—the same season in which former head coach Matt Rhule began his short-lived tenure with the organization. Thompson had played under Rhule at Temple University from 2014 to 2016, where he amassed 208 receiving yards and a touchdown over 14 games.

His pro career started in the spring of 2017, as an undrafted free agent for the New York Giants. He’d later be waived that summer and spend a pair of seasons on the Chicago Bears’ practice squad.

Following brief stops in the AAF and XFL, Thompson found himself in Charlotte—where he’d appear in 26 games between 2020 and 2021. He recorded one reception, a 7-yard touchdown catch against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, over three total targets.

Vikings sign TE/LS Colin Thompson

With two roster spots open, the Minnesota Vikings are signing TE/LS Colin Thompson to a one-year contract.

With two open roster spots, the Minnesota Vikings have filled one of them by signing tight end Colin Thompson. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.

Thompson spent the past three seasons with the Carolina Panthers where he played 26 total games across 2020 and 2021 while spending 2022 on the practice squad. He has one career catch for seven yards and a touchdown.

Thompson has also spent time with the Alliance of American Football League as well as the XFL, Chicago Bears and New York Giants.

What is intriguing about Thompson is his long snapper ability. That gives the Vikings a backup long-snapper in case something were to happen to Andrew DePaola.

With the move, the Vikings have room on the roster for one more player due to Junior Aho being a part of the International Pathway Program.

Panthers sign two TEs on Thursday

With Ian Thomas and Colin Thompson dealing with injuries, the Panthers inked a pair of tight ends on Thursday.

The Carolina Panthers officially closed up training camp for the summer on Wednesday. But they’re not coming out of Spartanburg, S.C. unscathed.

In addition to the handful of injuries sustained at the cornerback position, the Panthers’ tight end room also grew a bit thin over in Wofford College. Starter Ian Thomas is expected to miss a few weeks with a rib injury while Colin Thompson, who has appeared in 26 games for Carolina over the last two seasons, is currently dealing with a calf injury.

So, they’ve enlisted the help of former Buffalo Bill Nate Becker and former New England Patriot Ryan Izzo.

Becker broke into the league as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions in 2019. After being cut less than two months later, the Miami University (of Ohio) product landed in Buffalo.

The 6-foot-5, 264-pound pass catcher has played in just one regular season game at the pro level—a 2020 matchup against the Miami Dolphins. He registered 30 snaps on offense—with zero targets—and four on special teams.

Izzo was a seventh-round draft pick of the Patriots in 2019. He’s amassed 313 yards and a touchdown on 19 receptions over his three-year career.

To make room for Becker and Izzo, the Panthers waived linebacker Jacob Tuioti-Mariner and cornerback Devin Jones.

Check out some of the Panthers’ 2021 causes through their special Week 14 kicks.

Continuing in the NFL’s annual tradition, the Carolina Panthers brought out their passions as part of 2022’s “My Cause My Cleats” for Week 14.

Watch: Panthers TE Colin Thompson praises Sam Darnold’s big arm

One thing we know about Sam Darnold is he has a big enough arm for the job.

A lot goes into playing the quarterback position well in the NFL. Having plus arm talent never hurts, though. If nothing else the Carolina Panthers are getting an upgrade in this department. Since Cam Newton’s shoulder injuries they haven’t had a QB capable of pushing the ball downfield. Kyle Allen’s game dissolved quick after a promising start, then Teddy Bridgewater never got a consistent deep game going.

One thing we know about Sam Darnold is he has a big enough arm for the job. Watch tight end Colin Thompson praise Darnold based on his first impressions of Carolina’s new starter.

Panthers TE Colin Thompson shares thanks following first NFL touchdown

Thompson’s catch was just the second touchdown of the season for the Panthers tight ends.

This being 2020 (and a rebuilding year on top of it) Carolina Panthers fans have to take what pleasures they can this season. As disastrous as Sunday’s humiliating loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was, there were some small things worth celebrating. Slot cornerback Corn Elder, linebacker Shaq Thompson and wide receiver D.J. Moore all put in quality performances. Carolina also finally got some surprise production at the tight end position.

Following Thompson’s perfect peanut punch that forced a fumble on Ronald Jones II, tight end Colin Thompson scored the first touchdown of his NFL career. It also happened to be the first touch of his career. You can imagine his excitement. Today, Thompson shared a message of thanks on Twitter for everyone who has helped him along the way.

Wholesome.

Thompson’s catch was just the second touchdown of the season for the Panthers tight ends. Ian Thomas has the other.

Report: Panthers re-signing tight end Colin Thompson

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the team is re-signing tight end Colin Thompson to the 53-man roster.

The Panthers came out of this weekend’s roster cuts carrying only two tight ends: Ian Thomas and Chris Manhertz. While it’s clear the position will be de-emphasized in offensive coordinator Joe Brady’s scheme, we knew that state of affairs wasn’t going to last long.

According to a report by Adam Schefter at ESPN, the team is re-signing tight end Colin Thompson to the 53-man roster. He was cut on Saturday.

Thompson (6-foot-4, 257 pounds) is another Matt Rhule protege who played his college ball at Florida and Temple. In the NFL, he still hasn’t gotten on the field in a regular season game. This will be his fourth year in the league.

As for who Thompson will be replacing among the current 53-man roster, it’s anybody’s guess. For what it’s worth, the team could open up a spot by placing wide receiver Keith Kirkwood on the injured reserve list. He is still recovering from a broken clavicle and is expected to be out at least a couple more weeks.

Update:

The team has confirmed the Thompson signing and Kirkwood has been placed on IR.
