Fountain of Youth: How Michigan football’s underclassmen performed

The young bucks really shined! #GoBlue

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Michigan’s 31-6 win over Bowling Green served as the final installment in the Wolverines’ 2023 out-of-conference schedule. Though the game looked rocky in the first half, Michigan eventually got the score under control and cruised to a victory.

The key to Michigan’s success the past two seasons has been player development. Players like Rod Moore, Kris Jenkins, and Michael Barrett entered the program as relatively unheralded recruits, but now stand as crucial figures to the success of a national championship-hopeful team. Utilizing games against lesser opponents, like Bowling Green, to play young players is critical to their development.

Michigan’s young secondary pieces looked strong. Redshirt sophomore Keon Sabb made his third straight start in absence of Rod Moore, and once again impressed. He was been solid in coverage, willing to make a tackle, and today recorded a sack on the first possession of the game.

Also standing out was Jyaire Hill. The 18-year-old cornerback saw reps in the first half and performed admirably. The most notable thing about Hill’s game was his willingness to get involved in the run game. It’s not often you see a first-year player throw themselves into a pulling guard, but Hill showed no fear.

Not only should both Sabb and Hill have meaningful roles this season, but they are very likely going to be starters heading into next year. Their progress is essential to the success of the team moving forward.

Offensively, Semaj Morgan and Cole Cabana were the only true freshman to get touches.

Cabana, who made his debut after spending the first two games out with injury, got a pair of carries which he took for six yards. The speedster out of Dexter, Michigan is built from a similar mold as current Wolverine Donovan Edwards. Both are running backs by name, but have the skillset to split out wide as a receiver. If the punt return battle continues into the season, I would not be surprised to see Cabana get a fair shake.

Though a wide receiver, Semaj Morgan’s contribution to the game came on a jet sweep that went for four yards. Morgan is a twitchy slot receiver who should challenge opponents on short routes in the future, but for now may need some time to grow into a college body. I mentioned punt return duties for Cabana earlier, but I think Morgan could be a name we see here as well. While not the home run threat that Cabana is, Morgan’s explosiveness makes him a great tool working in tight spaces.

As per usual, the fountain of youth seems to be kind to Michigan. Though the current state of recruiting might be a little bland, Harbaugh and his staff always seem to find their guys.

ESPN picks Michigan football freshman as best with particularly unique skill

Will this skill be enough to get him on the field in 2023? #GoBlue

Michigan football doesn’t have the most heralded 2023 recruiting class. While there are a few big names — Jyaire Hill and Karmello English, particularly — the Wolverines didn’t capitalize off reaching the College Football Playoff for two straight years.

However, one particular freshman stands out to ESPN.

ESPN put together a list of 39 freshmen across college football that have a particularly unique skill. ($) While they might be skills held by many across the landscape, these players are ESPN’s pick as the absolute best given said skill.

Of the 39 players picked, Michigan football running back Cole Cabana has the distinction of being the best pass-catching running back as a 2023 freshman.

Best pass catching RB: Cole CabanaMichigan
ESPN 300 rank: 116

Cabana has excellent ball skills and is very polished as a pass receiver. He can line up in the slot and be just as effective given his hands and route running savvy. He’s a difficult matchup in space and will most likely be moved around the backfield in Ann Arbor. The Wolverines have one of the top backfields this season, and it will take time before we see major production from Cabana.

Cabana was injured in spring ball but is expected to be healthy either before or at some point during the season. His compatriot in the backfield, fellow freshman Benjamin Hall, is getting accolades coming off spring ball, and along with Tavierre Dunlap and C.J. Stokes, there will be a lot of competition to get time as that third running back in the rotation behind Blake Corum and Donovan Edwards.

Top five true freshman running backs in the Big Ten for 2023

Top five true freshman running backs in the Big Ten for 2023 #GoBucks #B1G

It is always fun to look at recruiting rankings. The recruiting landscape receives more coverage every year and is a very important aspect of building a program. Still, it is important to remember these players and prospects are not defined by these rankings.

I was diving into the most recent class and trying to figure out which future Buckeye is going to shine brightest and fastest but noticed that the Big Ten as a whole was pretty interesting recruiting-wise this cycle, and we already looked at the top quarterbacks in the class and I wanted to dive into the running back position next.

The following are the top five running backs recruits ranked by 247Sports heading to Big Ten schools this fall.

Michigan Football: Counting down the Wolverines’ top 5 recruits of 2023

Here are their five highest-ranked prospects.

One of the rising powers in college football the last two seasons is Michigan, where the Wolverines have gone 25-3 and won two Big Ten championships. Of course, a lot goes into making a winning program, but a recruiting advantage is usually at the heart of it.

And Michigan has been a significant factor in the race for top-tier athletes in the upcoming classes as well, especially from the Class of 2023.

Take a look at the Wolverines’ five highest-ranked prospects.

Scouting report

Via 247Sports’ Chris Singletary:

Checks in at 5-11, 175 with a lean muscular frame that can add another 10 to 15 pounds and still maximize athleticism. Displays very good vision that allows sudden shallow and jump cuts to get into creases and past defenders.

Constantly shows burst and acceleration where he splits defenses for chunk plays and big gainers. Willing to run behind his pads and run between the tackles. Doesn’t just try and use his speed and attack the edge.

Plays with good agility to make you miss with solid elusiveness. Very good in the receiving game. Soft hands either catching the ball out of the backfield or lining up in the slot. Brings a lot of tools to the game with his ability to play running back, slot receiver, and to be a returner.

Owns verified 10.69 100 and 21.86 200 speed that shows up on film. All-purpose back who showcases traits that should make for a productive college player with the ability to be utilized in multiple ways to attack defenses.

Michigan football wanted two running backs in the 2022 class, but it finished with just one in South Carolina tailback C.J. Stokes. How would it fare in 2023?

The maize and blue entered Saturday with just four pledges in 2023, with hopes that it could add another in Dexter (Mich.) three-star running back Cole Cabana, who also had offers from Michigan State, Boston College, Cincinnati, Louisville, West Virginia, and others. According to 247Sports, he was clocked as running a 4.34 40-yard dash, giving the Wolverines a speed element, should he choose Michigan.

And on Saturday, Cabana did exactly that, committing to the maize and blue.

With Cabana in the fold, the Wolverines have two four-stars and three three-stars, according to the 247Sports Composite.

Mike Hart was the primary recruiter on Michigan’s side of things.

A Michigan State football 2023 recruiting target plans to announce his college decision later this week.

Three-star running back Cole Cabana of Dexter, Michigan, announced on Monday  he intends to commit on Friday, Feb. 4. Cabana is ranked as the No. 21 running back in the country and No. 363 overall prospect for the 2023 class by 247Sports.

Cabana has received more than 20 scholarship offers, but it seems his decision will come down to Michigan or Michigan State. Right now, the Wolverines are projected to land his talents, but we’ll see how it plays out.

Since coming to Michigan State football, Mel Tucker has greatly prioritized size and speed. He might be able to add one of those in a big way soon as the Spartans offered 2023 speedster Cole Cabana on Monday.

Cabana is a 3-star running back from Dexter High School who reportedly ran a 4.34 40-yard dash recently, which is an NFL caliber of speed and something you rarely hear coming from a high school athlete.

Cabana is the No. 11 ranked player in Michigan for the 2023 class by 247Sports and their No. 363 ranked player overall.
