Contract details for 5th-round pick Clayton Tune

Tune’s four-year rookie contract is worth a total of more than $4.19 million.

The Arizona Cardinals have signed seven of their nine draft picks and among the first to sign their rookie contracts was quarterback Clayton Tune, the Cardinals’ first of two fifth-round selections.

Tune, drafted No. 139 overall by the Cardinals, gets a four-year contract worth a total of more than $4.19 million, according to Over the Cap.

He receives a signing bonus of $350,624.

He will make the league’s minimum salary each of the four years of his deal.

  • 2023: $750,000
  • 2024: $915,000
  • 2025: $1.03 million
  • 2026: $1.15 million

Salary cap implications

There is nothing complicated about his contract in terms of his cap hit each year. It will be the sum of his yearly salary plus the prorated number for his signing bonus, which will spread out over all four years.

These are his cap hits each year:

  • 2023: $838,000
  • 2024: $1 million
  • 2025: $1.12 million
  • 2026: $1.23 million

QB Clayton Tune has family connection to Cardinals

Tune’s great-great uncle Jimmy Lawrence was the Cardinals’ first-ever draft pick in 1936.

It was noted on the first night of the 2023 NFL draft that the Arizona Cardinals’ first-round pick, offensive lineman Paris Johnson Jr., was not the first in his family to be drafted by the Cardinals.

His father was drafted in the fifth round in 1999 as a defensive back, although he never ended up playing an NFL game.

Johnson wasn’t the only draft pick with family connections to the team.

Quarterback Clayton Tune, selected by Arizona in the fifth round, also has a family connection.

In fact, his great-great uncle was the first-ever player drafted by the Cardinals.

Tune’s great-great uncle (the sibling of one of Tune’s great grandparents) was Jim Lawrence, a running back out of TCU. In 1936, the first NFL draft, the Cardinals used their first selection to draft Lawrence.

He played for the Chicago Cardinals from 1936-1939. In his career, he had 357 rushing yards and four touchdowns.

Cardinals 5th-round QB Clayton Tune thinks he is the best QB in draft class

The Cardinals drafted an extremely confident quarterback in the fifth round.

The first overall pick in the 2023 NFL draft was quarterback Bryce Young, drafted by the Carolina Panthers after he was the Heisman Trophy winner last year for Alabama.

Most consider him the best quarterback in the draft.

Clayton Tune, the first fifth-round selection by the Arizona Cardinals, disagrees.

Tune is a quarterback coming out of Houston.

Who does he think is the best in the draft? Him, of course.

“I think I’m the best quarterback in this class,” Tune told reporters in Tempe during his conference call after he was selected.

Why?

“If you look at my body of work, the effect that I have on my team that I play on, I elevate everyone around me,” he said. “I’m a natural leader, people follow me and see the work that I’m putting in and the mindset that I have, and they want to follow suit. I have that no-flinch mentality when things get going tough. Those are some of the intangible things, and then being able to make every throw on the field, being able to make plays off schedule and be more mobile than people realize.”

That sort of confidence is critical to succeed in the NFL.

He is the prototypical size for a quarterback and he has plus athleticism.

He won’t have an easy way onto the roster. Behind Kyler Murray is Colt McCoy, David Blough and Jeff Driskel.

He likely is not going to be the best quarterback in the draft class but you don’t mind hearing a player say that at this point.

5th round QB Clayton Tune has some historical Cardinals draft ties

5th-round QB Clayton Tune isn’t the first member of his family to be drafted by the Cardinals organization

It only made sense that the Arizona Cardinals selected Houston quarterback Clayton Tune in the fifth round of the 2023 NFL draft. Tune has a great historical draft tie to the Cardinals organization.

As related by the Cardinals media relations, Tune is the great-great nephew of Jim Lawrence. As in, the same Jim Lawrence who was the first-ever draft pick by the Cardinals franchise back in 1936.

Lawrence was a running back out of TCU when the then-Chicago Cardinals drafted him fifth overall in the inaugural NFL draft some 87 years ago. Lawrence played four seasons for the Cardinals, leading the team in rushing in 1938.

Tune gets a chance to further the family legacy in Arizona.

POLL: Grade the Cardinals’ selection of QB Clayton Tune in Round 5

What grade do the Cardinals deserve for their selection of Houston QB Clayton Tune in the fifth round? Vote in the poll to tell us.

The Arizona Cardinals made a surprise pick with the first of their two fifth-round picks on Saturday, deciding to go with a quarterback. They selected Houston’s Clayton Tune.

Tune put up big numbers.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pounder threw 70 touchdown passes and more than 7,500 yards over the last two seasons. He also rushed for more than 500 yards last season.

He is an incredible athlete for the position. He can run and move quickly. He can make all the throws.

He told reporters on his conference call following being drafted that he thinks he is the best quarterback in the draft class.

It feels like a pick that could be better used at a different position but it does give them a player they like coming out of college to develop.

What do you think of the pick?

Give your grade by voting in the poll and give your thoughts in the comments.

Cardinals select Houston QB Clayton Tune in Round 5

The Cardinals used the 139th pick in the draft to select Houston QB Clayton Tune.

The Arizona Cardinals have selected a quarterback in the 2023 NFL draft. Using their fifth-round selection, they drafted Houston quarterback Clayton Tune No. 139 overall.

Tune is almost 6-foot-3 and 220 pounds, and he is very athletic.

He threw 70 touchdown passes over the last two seasons.

In 2021, he completed 68.3% of his passes for 3,544 yards, 30 touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

In 2022, he completed 67.3% of his passes for 4,074 yards, 40 touchdowns and 10 picks.

He also rushed for an additional 544 yards and five touchdowns in 2022.

The selection is certainly a surprise.

2023 NFL draft: Best available prospects for Giants on Day 3

As we enter Day 3 of the 2023 NFL draft, here are some of the best available prospects for the New York Giants (who will have four picks).

The New York Giants were very active over the first two days of the 2023 NFL draft, making a pair of trades and acquiring three top players and potential starters.

Because of general manager Joe Schoen’s wheeling and dealing, the Giants have just four picks remaining over the final four rounds. Their next pick does not come until No. 172 overall (Round 5). However, don’t rule out another trade up.

Here are some of the best available prospects for Big Blue on Day 3.

Bucs full seven-round 2023 mock draft

Draft day is here, and the talk is over. Well, almost — Bucs Wire has one last mock draft for you:

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ first draft after the end of the Tom Brady era will set the tone for the franchise in 2023. After making enough moves in free agency with limited cap space to stay afloat this season, the Bucs’ 2023 draft class will be a mission statement for how general manager Jason Licht and head coach Todd Bowles want to remake the roster.

The Bucs have few immediate needs outside of offensive tackle. Even there, the positional flexibility that All-Pro Tristan Wirfs can provide by playing either left or right tackle keeps Tampa’s options open.

With most of Tampa’s starting jobs filled, this draft will be about building depth, particularly on the defensive line and secondary, and developmental projects for the roster two to three years from now at the offensive skill positions.

The Lions ‘What I Would Do’ 2023 mock draft

Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon lays out what choices he would make for the Detroit Lions in the 2023 NFL draft

Normally the mock drafts you see here attempt to be predictive in nature, trying to forecast what might happen in the 2023 NFL draft. This is not one of those types of projections.

This mock draft edition is the one where I pretend I’m the Lions GM and make the picks as if I were making the choices. Keeping the available options within reason, this is how I would choose at each pick for Detroit. Again, this is in no way an attempt to predict what the Lions will actually do this weekend.

Because of the incredible uncertainty above the Lions and the No. 6 pick, this year’s edition is one where you’ll need to pay attention to the comments and explanations. There are contingency picks and conditional choices based off those contingencies for several subsequent picks.

Bucs 2023 draft targets: Quarterbacks

Don’t expect the Bucs to go QB in Round 1, but here are a few options they could look at in the NFL draft:

The end of the Tom Brady era left the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at a roster crossroads. Though their options appear limited, the Bucs could still look to add quarterback talent in the 2023 draft.

When the offseason began, the Bucs had only 2021 second-round pick Kyle Trask on their quarterback depth chart. Trask has played all of 10 snaps in the NFL and was very much a project when the Bucs drafted him. That might explain why they signed Baker Mayfield in free agency, but neither option is a clear long-term answer.

With the 19th pick in this year’s draft, the Bucs are likely well out of range to take any of the top quarterback prospects. Top prospects Bryce Young, CJ Stroud and Anthony Richardson would well be gone before Tampa would even have a realistic chance to trade up for one of them.

Playing out the 2023 season with either Trask or Mayfield starting appears to be the only path available to the Bucs, but that does not mean Tampa won’t target a quarterback prospect to draft. Since 2019, the Bucs have typically carried three quarterbacks on the roster. While the Bucs could sign a developmental passer as an undrafted free agent, they have the draft capital to grab one in the late rounds.

Here are the quarterbacks the Bucs could target in the 2023 draft:
