Houston QB Clayton Tune named ideal Day 3 fit for Jets by PFF

Could Clayton Tune be a developmental option for the Jets?

Day three of the NFL draft has become a very key piece of roster building. It’s where you build your depth and potentially find those diamonds in the rough. More and more we see good talent fall out of the first three rounds and remain available on Saturday.

Pro Football Focus recently looked at some day three prospects and tried to link one ideal day three fit to each team. That player for Jets was Houston quarterback Clayton Tune.

The First-Team All-American Conference quarterback was third in the nation in 2022 with 40 passing touchdowns and was invited to the Senior Bowl.

The Jets are still focused on Aaron Rodgers but they’ll also need to think about down the road as well, especially if Rodgers doesn’t play in 2024. That’s where someone like Tune comes in and is part of the reasoning PFF gives behind the fit.

“The Jets might as well take a chance on developing two toolsy quarterbacks at the same time behind Aaron Rodgers, assuming that trade gets done. Tune has the best combination of size, athleticism and arm talent of any quarterback who will be available on Day 3.”

Perfect late-round, undrafted free-agent QB fits for the Eagles in 2023 NFL draft

We’re looking at the perfect late-round, undrafted free-agent quarterback fit for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 2023 NFL draft.

The Eagles’ 2023 NFL offseason is in full swing, and as Howie Roseman retools a roster that’ll look entirely different on defense, we’re looking at a potential backup quarterback.

After two years of uncertainty, Jalen Hurts is the man in Philadelphia and the NFC after leading the franchise to its second Super Bowl appearance in the past five years.

An All-Pro and MVP Runner up, Hurts reset the market after agreeing to a five-year, $255 million contract extension.

Still, Philadelphia is in the business of developing quarterbacks, and with Marcus Mariota aging, Howie Roseman could look to add a young signal-caller to groom under Hurts.

With the first wave of NFL free agency now complete, and the draft just one week away, we’re looking at the potential late-round, undrafted free agent fits at quarterback.

NFL Draft: Tyler Forness’ top 10 quarterbacks

The Minnesota Vikings need a quarterback of the future and there are some interesting players in this class that could fill that need.

Finding a quarterback of the future is the number one thing that the Vikings need this offseason. That doesn’t necessarily have to be a rookie, but it makes the most sense for what general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah is trying to do.

This class doesn’t have a Trevor Lawrence in it, but what it does have is multiple talented players that could potentially be a really good player.

Earlier this week, I released my top 20 wide receivers and here is my list of top 10 quarterbacks.

NFL Draft: How to find a backup quarterback

With the Vikings needing to find a QB of the future, taking one in the middle rounds could still net them a backup writes @TheKevinFielder

The Minnesota Vikings can approach finding a quarterback of the future in the 2023 NFL Draft in two ways.

They can take one in the first round (either after a trade-up or at their No. 23 pick). A trade would likely include multiple first-round picks, including this year’s selection, and could mean mortgaging their future for an unproven commodity with a high ceiling.

The Vikings could also pass on a quarterback on Thursday and take one later in the draft. This option offers no production guarantees, but it would also mean fewer assets (and an opportunity to address the other needs).

While opportunities to select the next Dak Prescott, Brock Purdy, or Tom Brady exists, there are no guarantees that the next starting quarterback will be on the board late in the draft. Instead, it’s more likely that the Vikings would get an affordable backup signal-caller with team control.

Which is fine, by the way. Finding a reliable backup quarterback is a challenging task. Teams hardly hit on non-first-round signal-callers, and there’s a hefty premium for backup quarterbacks that an offense can trust.

The Vikings can maximize their late-round quarterback value in a few ways.

2023 NFL draft: Could the Giants select a late-round QB?

Quarterback doesn’t seem like a concern for the New York Giants but don’t be surprised if they select one in the 2023 NFL draft.

The New York Giants have many needs heading into the 2023 NFL draft and rarely is quarterback discussed among them.

And why would it be? The Giants just signed Daniel Jones to a four-year, $160 million deal and have his backup, Tyrod Taylor, under contract through the 2023 season.

The problem facing general manager Joe Schoen is that there’s no longer a QB3 on the roster and with Taylor potentially leaving via free agency in 2024, the Giants are running quite thin. So with 10 picks in tow, why not spend one on a quarterback in Kansas City?

The Giants appear to be preparing for precisely that.

Throughout the offseason, they have met with several potential late-round quarterback prospects and one — Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker — who could be selected much earlier.

In addition to Hooker, who the Giants will use a top-30 visit on, they’ve also met with Houston’s Clayton Tune and Penn State’s Sean Clifford in addition to expressing interest in East Carolina’s Holton Ahlers.

These meetings aren’t coincidences and they aren’t merely due diligence. Schoen recognizes a need, however minimal it may be, and appears to be preparing himself for a late-round choice.

If and when a quarterback’s name is called later this month, don’t let it surprise you. It’s all about avoiding a larger problem down the road.

Vikings 2023 NFL draft scouting report: Houston QB Clayton Tune

The Houston Cougar threw 70 touchdowns over the last two seasons. How does Clayton Tune project to the NFL?

Welcome to SKOL Search!

This series will be your guide to the 2023 draft class. From scouting reports to mock drafts and exploring different scenarios, we will be covering the NFL draft and the future of the Minnesota Vikings from all angles.

The focus of the draft class in this space will be on the Vikings’ major needs at wide receiver, running back, cornerback and both interior and edge pass rusher.

The Vikings are slated to have five picks going into the NFL draft and they need to make the most out of them.

Giants will meet with Houston QB Clayton Tune

The New York Giants will conduct a pre-2023 NFL draft visit with Houston quarterback Clayton Tune.

The New York Giants will host Houston quarterback Clayton Tune for a visit ahead of the 2023 NFL draft.

Tune is projected to be a Day 3 selection in the draft.

Tune was a stat stuffer in the AAC as he posted 11,994 passing yards and 104 passing touchdowns in five years at Houston. He also added 1,248 yards and 15 touchdowns on the ground. However, the major knock on the quarterback was his turnovers and accuracy on the run which caused him to throw 41 interceptions in his collegiate career.

The Giants are likely looking for a Day 3 or undrafted free-agent quarterback in this year’s class as they only have two quarterbacks on the roster. Daniel Jones, who they re-signed for four seasons, and Tyrod Taylor, who they have for the next two years.

Tune will be a prospect to look at for this potential third quarterback role.

Bucs to meet with Houston QB Clayton Tune

The Bucs could be looking to add some young quarterback depth to the roster.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be targeting a quarterback in this year’s draft, but it may not be one many expect. Houston quarterback Clayton Tune is scheduled to visit the Bucs along with several other NFL teams in the lead-up to the draft according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Tune has played for Houston since 2018, starting at least one game every year since his freshman season. In 2022, Tune posted titanic stats, throwing for 4065 yards and 40 touchdowns, both top-10 figures among all FBS quarterbacks.

Though Tune is not mentioned as one of the top quarterback prospects like Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud or Anthony Richardson, he may only be a tier below them. Draft Wire’s Jeff Risdon ranked Tune seventh among this year’s quarterback class and projects him as a fifth-round pick.

The Bucs currently have two fifth-round picks and two in the sixth. With only two quarterbacks on the roster, it would be a good bet Tampa will add one more developmental passer like Tune on Day 3 of the draft.

Rams will host Houston QB Clayton Tune for a visit

The Rams are showing interest in Houston QB Clayton Tune, who could be a Day 3 pick for them

Since hiring Sean McVay as their head coach in 2017, the Los Angeles Rams have never drafted a quarterback. They traded picks for Matthew Stafford in 2021, but they’ve never actually selected one in the draft. That could change this year.

Despite having Stafford back as their starter, the Rams don’t currently have a backup. One option in the draft is Houston’s Clayton Tune, who’s projected to be a Day 3 pick this year.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Rams have a visit and/or workout scheduled for Tune, a clear sign of their interest in the quarterback leading up to the draft.

Tune had a very productive career in college, throwing for 4,074 yards and 40 touchdowns last season alone. In his career, he 11,994 yards, 104 touchdowns and 41 interceptions. He’s a bit undersized at 6-foot-2 but he has decent athleticism for a quarterback, running a 4.64 in the 40-yard dash with a 37.5-inch vertical.

If the Rams are looking for a rookie backup, they could do worse than Tune on Day 3 of the draft.

Lions 7-round mock draft, spring break edition

The latest 2023 NFL draft projections for the Detroit Lions from Lions Wire’s Jeff Risdon

For millions of Americans, this week is spring break. It’s a time for families to get away and spend quality time together, or for college-age folks to live it up.

For some college student-athletes, it’s still time to work. The NFL draft is coming up quickly, and the prospects hoping to get selected are still doing everything they can to help their draft stock.

A select few of those prospects will become Detroit Lions. Here’s the latest projection of who those players could be when the draft takes place later this month.

Note: this is a projection of what the Lions might do with their picks, not a reflection of the choices I would make in the same situation. The “what I would do” mock draft comes closer to the draft. No trades in this one.
