A lineman from a nearby Power Five school who recently entered the transfer portal could pique Clemson’s interest for multiple reasons.

Clay Webb, who spent the last three seasons at Georgia, is looking for a new home. A former five-star recruit, Webb will almost certainly draw plenty of suitors looking for immediate help on the interior of the offensive line, which may be Clemson’s most pressing need heading into the 2022 season.

If the Tigers had to play a game today, rising senior Will Putnam, a converted guard, would likely take the field with the rest of the offense as the starting center. While Putnam earned praise from coaches for his performance at his new position this spring, head coach Dabo Swinney said before the spring started that the team would actively pursue a center in the transfer portal this offseason.

Swinney confirmed those intentions following Clemson’s spring game over the weekend, though he reiterated it would have to be the right fit.

“We’re not going to just take a guy to take a guy,” Swinney said. “It’s got to be right, but we certainly are going to evaluate that between now and May.”

But Clemson is one program that has already tried to fit Webb into its plans once before.

A native of Oxford, Alabama, Webb was rated by 247Sports as the No. 1 center nationally and the No. 2 overall recruit in Alabama in the 2019 recruiting cycle. The Tigers heavily recruited the 6-foot-3, 290-pounder then. So did in-state SEC schools Alabama and Auburn (among others) before all lost out to Georgia, where things didn’t go exactly as planned for Webb.

He played in just five games for the Bulldogs as a reserve, getting some of his snaps at guard. Another former blue-chip prospect, redshirt freshman Sedrick Van Pran, passed him on the depth chart this past season, starting all 15 games at center for the defending national champions.

With three years of eligibility left (including a COVID year), Webb figures to be looking for a place where he can make more of an immediate impact. At Clemson, he could also help keep the offensive line from playing so many musical chairs.

Clemson already tried the guard-playing-center experiment last season with mixed results. The Tigers moved Matt Bockhorst there to try to fill the void left by the departed Cade Stewart, but that lasted just a handful of games before Clemson slid Bockhorst back to guard and went with Hunter Rayburn and Mason Trotter at center.

Trotter is the only one of those three still on the roster, but he will miss most if not all of next season, which is why Putnam made the move this spring. Redshirt freshman Ryan Linthicum also took reps at center in the spring game, but the fact that Clemson is shopping the portal suggests the Tigers want to add plug-and-play type of help. Bringing in an immediate contributor at the position would allow Putnam to stay in his more natural spot at right guard, where’s been the starter for the last two seasons.

Much like three years ago, Webb will be a hot commodity as one of the top interior linemen in the portal. But it could be a match that’s mutually beneficial for Webb and the Tigers should Clemson decide to pursue — and land — him this time around.

Former 5-star center Clay Webb enters transfer portal

Georgia Bulldogs center Clay Webb has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

Georgia Bulldogs center Clay Webb has entered the NCAA transfer portal. Webb, a former five-star recruit, has not seen a lot of playing time throughout his career. His pending transfer is a blow to Georgia’s depth chart along the offensive front.

Why is Clay Webb transferring? He has played in five career games for the Bulldogs dating back to 2019 and is unlikely to win the starting center job in 2022 over returning started Sedrick Van Pran.

Webb joins former five-star recruit Amarius Mims in the transfer portal and is looking for a new college football home. Webb played high school football for Oxford High School in Oxford, Alabama. He could be considering returning home to Alabama to continue his college football career.

Webb is the third Georgia lineman to enter the transfer portal since Stacy Searles became the offensive line coach at Georgia. Searles inherited a very talented offensive line room, but most act fast to ensure that the Bulldogs don’t see a significant dip in talent at that position group.

Pair of Georgia Bulldogs named as 5-stars with something to prove

The Georgia Bulldogs need contributions from a lot of new players in 2022.

The Georgia Bulldogs have one of the top rosters in college football entering the 2022 season. Georgia is coming off a national championship, but that does not mean every player on the roster is a proven commodity.

Georgia is expected to have an historic number of players selected in the 2022 NFL draft. That means Georgia’s defense must replace a lot of talent, so Kirby Smart and company need a number of new players to step up in 2022.

The Bulldogs have two players 247Sports has named as five-star prospects with something to prove:

Wide receiver/tight end Arik Gilbert

Georgia Bulldogs wide receiver/tight end Arik Gilbert transferred to UGA from LSU, but sat out the 2021-2022 season due to personal issues. Gilbert was a five-star recruit out of Marietta with tons of talent.

He can be a big-time difference-maker for the Bulldogs. Gilbert will see a lot of action this spring due to Brock Bowers’ injury, Darnell Washington’s injury and more injuries in the tight ends room.

Can Gilbert take advantage of this opportunity? He has the talent to do so and is off to a good start in the classroom this year. Gilbert needs to establish chemistry with quarterback Stetson Bennett this spring to have the best possible season in the fall.

Gilbert caught 35 passes for 368 yards and found the end zone twice as a freshman at LSU. Gilbert was named to the Freshman All-SEC Team and put up great numbers despite only playing in eight games for multiple quarterbacks.

Georgia can dominate the offensive trenches in 2020

The University of Georgia football team lost an abundance of talent in the offensive trenches this off-season.

Kirby Smart and the University of Georgia lost an abundance of talent in the trenches this off-season. Georgia is losing four starting offensive linemen from the 2019 season. Kirby Smart recruits aggressively so the Dawgs can reload and not rebuild.

Center Trey Hill will be the only returning start from 2019’s line. That doesn’t mean UGA will lack talent in 2020. The Bulldogs return numerous offensive linemen  (in addition to Hill) with valuable experience including: Justin Shaffer (now healthy), Ben Cleveland, and Jamaree Salyer. Georgia will need each of their experience in the week three trip to Tuscaloosa to face Nick Saban and the Alabama Crimson Tide.

In fact, Georgia’s returning linemen are among the best in the SEC, per PFF’s Brent Rollins:

Georgia will have three of the top-graded returning nine offensive linemen in the SEC. The Dawgs additionally added five-star offensive tackle Broderick Jones, four-star Tate Ratledge, top-rated center Sedrick Van Pran, four-star offensive tackle Chad Lindberg, and a pair of three-star linemen in the class of 2020.

One of the talented newcomers will likely work their way into the line-up, possibly two. Georgia also returns Warren Ericson, who started at right guard in the Sugar Bowl against Baylor, 2019 five-star center Clay Webb, Warren McClendon, Xavier Truss, Owen Condon, and more.

The biggest question mark for UGA is who will replace stud left tackle Andrew Thomas? That may be too big of an adjustment for five-star freshman Broderick Jones, but he’s the best bet to take over that position. Aside from left tackle, quality depth is the second biggest concern along Georgia’s offensive line. Kirby Smart will rely on new offensive line coach Matt Luke to get the most of the talented group.
