What to expect from Notre Dame during early signing period

Will the Irish keep their Top-10 ranking after tomorrow?

A few years ago when college football changed their rules and implemented the early signing period, some of the first Wednesday in February’s shine wore off. That now has switched to mid-December and tomorrow is that new day. The Irish head into tomorrow with a Top-10 class, numbering 22 total commits. Here’s a quick preview of what we might see happen tomorrow during the early signing period for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame loses a 2022 California wide receiver commit

This one stings

The Irish knew this was going to happen when Brian Kelly left to take the job at LSU, that their recruiting class was going to have decommitments. Even if Kelly stayed, this could have happened but after his departure it seemed even more likely.

New head coach Marcus Freeman has already had to deal with defensive back Devin Moore leaving the 2022 class and now wide receiver C.J. Williams has re-opened his recruitment and decommitted from the Irish. Both of the player leaving hurts but Williams more than Moore. He is one of the best players at his position and was ranked among the Top-100 in the class of 2022.

It is now back to the drawing board for Freeman, who has a very solid base of commits with 22 but now has some room to add a few more players.

Four-star wide receiver CJ Williams commits to Notre Dame over Texas, USC

On Sunday, WR C.J. Williams shut down his recruitment and committed to Notre Dame. He joins the No. 2 recruiting class in the 2022 cycle.

Texas has been stuck at one wide receiver since the beginning of January. Four-star wide receiver Armani Winfield committed before Steve Sarkisian even stepped foot on campus, being the first commit under the new head coach.

Five-star Evan Stewart was committed for just under a month but decided to reopen the process. Other targets remained on the board, including four-star CJ Williams.

Fighting for the California native’s commitment alongside Texas was Notre Dame and USC. The first two got official visits during the month of June, while the hometown Trojans never got the opportunity to host.

On Sunday, Williams shut down his recruitment and committed to the Fighting Irish. He joins the No. 2 class in the country as the second-highest-rated prospect.

This marks the second head-to-head victory Notre Dame has over Texas. Four-star linebacker Niuafe Tuihalamaka was down to the two schools but ending up going against the good guys.

On the 247Sports composite, Williams is the No. 86 player in the country and the No. 11 wide receiver. Within the state of California, he ranks as the No. 7 prospect.

Texas still has plenty of options left on their wide receiver board, mainly former commit Evan Stewart. The five-star is a must-get recruit for Sarkisian, needing his speed within the locker room. The same could be said for four-star Brenen Thompson.

An important fall of wide receiver recruiting is ahead of Sarkisian and Andre Coleman.

Notre Dame makes top-five for much needed wide receiver

Can Notre Dame pull off a commitment from another California star?

Between injuries and departures, Notre Dame hasn’t had the best luck of late at the wide receiver position, and as strong as the 2022 recruiting class is, it sits with just one commitment at the position to date.

With that in mind, Notre Dame received some very good news on Wednesday as four-star, 2022 wide receiving target C. J. Williams listed the Fighting Irish among his five finalists.

Joining Notre Dame are Alabama, Stanford, Texas, and USC.

Williams is listed at 6-2, 193 pounds and is getting set to start his senior year at Mater Dei in Santa Ana, California.

The 6-foot-2, 193-pounder is rated the No. 3 overall prospect from the state of California and the No. 47 recruit in the country for the 2022 class according to 247Sports.

On Wednesday, Williams announced the final five schools left in his recruitment. Notre Dame, USC, Stanford, and Alabama made the cut alongside Texas.

Williams, who also runs track at Mater Dei, would be a huge get for Texas’ 2022 class, which currently holds only one wide receiver commit in Armani Winfield. Texas is also in the mix for five-star Evan Stewart.

Williams currently has two crystal ball predictions that have him going to Notre Dame, but Texas still has time to make some moves that might help change Williams’ mind.

He recently took a visit to Austin on June 19.

Notable NBA veterans who are eligible for 2021 G League Draft

When the upcoming NBA G League season tips off next months, fans can expect to see more familiar faces than they would in a typical year.

When the upcoming NBA G League season tips off next months, fans can expect to see more familiar faces than they would in a typical year.

The NBA G League is hosting a bubble tournament at the ESPN Wide World of Sport Complex in Florida. Once teams are assembled, they will arrive to the location by January 26 for physicals and onboarding. The first game is set for February 8 and teams are expected to play a “12-to-15 game schedule” before their single-elimination playoffs from March 5-March 9.

This offseason, per ESPN, the league also eliminated restrictions for signing players with at least five years of NBA experience. For example, as reported by Adam Johnson, this is how Jeremy Lin was able to sign outright with the Santa Cruz Warriors rather than enter the draft pool. This is reportedly a one-time exception for the G League.

Similarly, others with NBA experience signed outright as veteran mentors for the inaugural G League Ignite squad. Players like Amir Johnson and Bobby Brown will lend a hand for top prospects like Jonathan Kuminga and Jalen Green as they transition to the pros.

Otherwise, however, players not already on a roster who are looking to get back on the court and play in the upcoming bubble season will have to hear their names called on Monday. Over the last few days, we have learned about several players (e.g. Michael Beasley and Lance Stephenson) who recently signed NBA G League Standard Player Contracts.

Even those who have been around the league for years have no guarantee of being selected, though. There are only 17 teams playing in the bubble, as 12 have opted out.

While the draft will have a maximum of 26 players selected, teams are allowed to forfeit their picks, so that number could end up even smaller. But that has not swayed the nearly 200 players who are hopeful about suiting up in Florida.

The 2021 G League Draft is scheduled for Monday, January 11, at 1:15 PM EST. Below are some of the most notable candidates, listed in order of how many minutes they have played in the NBA:

Paul Chryst and the Wisconsin Badgers continued their recruiting push yesterday by extending offers to two top wide receivers in the class of 2022, C.J. Williams and Sam M’Bake.

Williams is a four-star prospect from Mater Dei High School in Santa Ana, California and is currently ranked by 247Sports as the 2022’s No. 31 overall prospect, the No. 4 wide receiver and the No. 5 player from his state.

Williams’ other offers include Alabama, Ohio State, Auburn and Arkansas.

The second recruit offered by Chryst, M’Bake, is a four-star recruit out of IMG Academy. The Georgia native is the No. 24 wide receiver prospect in his class and the No. 27-ranked recruit from his state according to 247Sports.

His other offers include Arizona State, Florida, Colorado and Arkansas.

The offensive future looks bright with Graham Mertz and Jalen Berger set to burst onto the scene in the coming years. Were Wisconsin to land one or both of these players they would create an offensive attack to be reckoned with, and one that may finally be able to play toe-to-toe with Ohio State.

Texas Offers 2022 Four-Star Wide Receiver

With the 2020 class wrapping up, UT has begun to focus on upcoming classes. UT added another 2022 offer, this time to a WR from California.

With the 2020 recruiting class wrapping up at the beginning of February, Texas has begun to focus on upcoming classes. Already offering 18 players in the 2022 class, the Longhorns added another one to the list, this time from California.

Texas has offered four-star wide receiver, CJ Williams from Santa Ana, CA. Out of the famous Mater Dei High School, Williams is listed at 6 feet 2 inches and 175 pounds. He is currently the seventh-best wide receiver in the 2022 class and ranked 43rd overall.

According to 247Sports, Williams already has 13 offers, but the Longhorns are the first school from the Big 12 to offer him. Local schools Cal, Stanford, UCLA, and USC have offered Williams, along with SEC schools like Alabama, LSU, and Georgia.

This is the fourth wide receiver Texas has offered from the 2022 class. Williams is the second from out of state as they have also offered five-star Luther Burden out of Saint Louis, MO. Caleb Burton and Armani Winfield are both four-stars from Texas.
