American Athletic Conference Championship: Cincinnati vs Houston Game Preview

Why Houston Will Win

Shhhhhhhhhh, it’s been a very, very quiet Houston team that’s been able to sneak on through the season with 11 straight wins after dropping the opener to Texas Tech, and now it’s here with more than enough talent to play the spoiler role.

It’s not just about taking the American Athletic Conference title for the Cougars. Win this, and they might get the New Year’s Six bowl slot.

There isn’t that Notre Dame win like Cincinnati has, and there’s not even an Indiana – Houston didn’t beat a Power Five team – but the offense has been able to roll with a whole lot of points, the special teams makes a whole lot of big plays, and the defense is like nothing Cincinnati has seen since South Bend.

This Houston defense can swarm.

It’s amazing against the run – it held everyone but Navy to under 150 yards and allowed fewer than 100 yards in six of the last eight games – the pass rush is a terror, and this group takes the ball away in bunches.

The Cougars lead the American Athletic Conference in turnover margin, they’ve forced multiple takeaways in five of the last eight games, and Cincinnati turns the ball over WAY too often – three giveaways in three of the last four games.

College Football Expert Picks, Championship Week

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Yeah, Houston has done a whole lot of big things and it’s been building to this point, but …

Houston’s schedule makes Cincinnati’s slate look like the SEC West.

Not to schedule-shame the American Athletic Conference, but Houston has played – according to the official NCAA stats – the second-easiest schedule in college football ahead of only Coastal Carolina.

The best win was over … SMU? Tulsa? There’s not a whole lot of meat on that bone.

No, Cincinnati’s schedule really isn’t that great – everyone knows the problem at this point when it comes to the College Football Playoff discussion – but even with a few close calls against some awful teams, the defense was still a rock when it had to be, the special teams has come up with huge plays to change around games – Indiana and East Carolina were the two biggies – and the offensive line has stepped up as games have gone on.

The Houston offensive line has ben fine. It hasn’t been special, and that could be the big difference against a Cincinnati defensive front that holds up well and should live in the backfield in this.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

What’s Going To Happen

How much will the Houston control matter?

Cincinnati is usually able to get teams to play on its terms, but it never seems to have the ball – time of possession doesn’t seem to mean much to Luke Fickell and this team.

On the flip side, Houston dominates the clock and the pace, keeping the ball for over 33 minutes per game as it makes teams press. Cincinnati will come up with a few mistakes as it tries to make something big happen to keep drives alive.

And then it’ll make something big happen to change the momentum around.

Houston will be deep in this for a full four quarters, but for the second year in a row, Cincinnati – thanks to a brilliant drive from QB Desmond Ridder – will pull out the American Athletic Conference championship in a thriller.

And then it’ll quickly check on what’s happening in the SEC Championship that’s going on at the exact same time.

Cincinnati vs East Carolina Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Now that’s the Cincinnati we’ve all been waiting for over the second half of the season.

SMU isn’t all that great, but it had a great record and a strong offense, and Cincinnati ripped it all apart in a dominant 48-14 win that was even better than the final score.

Now the Bearcats are No. 4 in the latest College Football Playoff rankings, they’re getting some measure of respect for being one of three unbeaten teams left in college football, and now the possibility of getting into the tournament really does exist.

However, while the Power Five teams in the CFP mix are all playing monster matchups, anything less than amazing will do – and it’s possible if QB Desmond Ridder continues to play like he has over the last few weeks. For all the concerns and mediocrity at times, the O has kicked it all in with way over 1,000 yards over the last two weeks.

On the other side, the Bearcat defense leads the American Athletic Conference in tackles for loss, the secondary has been a rock, and the takeaways have been coming in key spots. Now it goes against an East Carolina offense that struggles in pass protection and gives the ball away too much.

The Pirate offense turned it over two or more times in five straight games before finally cutting off the mistakes in last week’s win at Navy.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

Why East Carolina Will Win

East Carolina expects big things at home when people are paying attention.

It hasn’t always been a rock of a home team, but it pulled off a stunner in a 2016 home win over NC State, destroyed North Carolina in 2018, dominated a decent SMU squad last year, and …

This matters, why, in 2021?

It only seems like QB Holton Ahlers has been around for all of them – he did run for two scores, though, against North Carolina.

The longtime Pirate passer is coming off one of his best games in four years – hitting 85% of his throws for over 400 yards and three touchdowns in the win over Navy. He was fantastic in the 2019 shootout loss to Cincinnati, but was totally miserable in last year’s game.

Playing Cincinnati is hardly new for him.

He’s got the pieces around him to make this work. The Pirates have a running game to control the tempo – they keep the ball for close to 33 minutes – and the defense is good enough on third downs to make up for a slew of other issues.

Just keep getting off the field, feed off the energy of the crowd in this, and hope for Ahlers to use his experience to handle what’s coming.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

What’s Going To Happen

SMU was never going to be the problem for Cincinnati.

It was an enough-is-enough moment for the Bearcats, it was Senior Day at home, and it was a game ripe for a blowout. This, though, is dangerous.

The bigger issue is against Houston in the American Athletic Conference Championship, but the Pirates have just the right blend of offensive balance, a defense that can hold serve, and the home side of things to make this interesting.

Cincinnati will come through when it has to.

It’ll get off to a hot start thanks to a few ECU mistakes, but slowly the game will get tighter. Just as it seems like the upset is coming, though, two late scoring drives will keep the dream alive.

Once again, Ridder will be fantastic.

All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Cincinnati vs SMU Game Preview

Why SMU Will Win

Cincinnati isn’t playing all that well.

Give it full and total credit for going into South Bend and giving Notre Dame its only loss of the season, but that’s it. That’s Cincinnati’s “Mambo No. 5” one-hit wonder followed up by a bunch of duds.

It’s not that the schedule has been lousy – up until this, the Bearcats haven’t played a team other than the Irish that has a win over a Power Five team, and that includes Indiana – it’s that it’s been such a struggle against the sad.

Where are the 52-3 blowouts over the awful teams? There was one over Temple, but that’s it.
So what’s the problem?

The running game has been wildly inconsistent, there are just enough turnovers to matter – six in the last two games – and it’s been too much of a struggle overall until the last few minutes.

SMU has the offense to take care of all of that.

Including Notre Dame, Cincinnati has yet to deal with anyone who can bomb away. The SMU offense leads the American Athletic Conference in total offense, partly because the offensive line leads the league in sacks allowed, and that all helps the team lead the was in scoring, too.

No, it hasn’t always been easy for the Mustangs against the mediocre teams, there’s a different standard here – no one’s putting in the College Football Playoff hunt.

However, win this, beat Tulsa next week, and it’s in the American Athletic Conference championship f Houston beats Cincinnati.

With all of that said …

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Blah blah blah blah blah.

Yeah, Cincinnati hasn’t played well enough over the last month for a team that’s supposedly the second or third best in the country according to some polls, but it’s winning, it’s winning by a lot in most of these battles – by 19 over Tulane and 17 against USF – and now we get to see what it can do when it really matters.

Those close games against awful teams won’t mean spit if the Bearcats roll SMU, at East Carolina, and against Houston in the AAC Championship.

Lost in the overall narrative is that Demond Ridder got better. The veteran quarterback wasn’t accurate enough early in the season – yeah, he didn’t hit 60% of his passes against Notre Dame, Indiana, and UCF, aka, the good teams – but he’s been far more accurate over the back half of the season, he’s running well, and he’s making up for the team’s inconsistencies in the running game.

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

Not yet.

It’s coming. Watch out for that trip to East Carolina, and Houston isn’t going to be any sort of a pushover, but if Cincinnati biffs its possible run to the College Football Playoff, it’s not going to be here.

SMU will put up numbers. QB Tanner Mordecai will wing it around the yards for around 300 yards, there will be moments when it looks like the big moment is happening, but Cincinnati’s lines will take over as the game goes on.

It’ll be more of a slow-and-steady-wins-the-race thing. Don’t expect dynamic, but Ridder is about to go off.

SMU couldn’t do a thing against Houston or Memphis – allowing 864 passing yards in the two games – and it somehow managed to make Tulane and UCF look like they could throw.
No. Not yet.

Cincinnati vs USF Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

Alright, Cincinnati. Enough is enough.

The Bearcats haven’t exactly set the world on fire with everyone watching to see if they’re worthy of the high rankings and College Football Playoff consideration, but now they get a 2-7 USF team that shouldn’t be able to run the ball, has an inefficient passing game, and named to get past 400 total yards twice all yards – the wins over Temple and Florida A&M.

There’s no reason to take any wild chances here. Just start running against the porous Bull defensive front and keep it all going. USF has allowed 250 or more rushing yards in three of the last four games, and UC is WAY overdue to get back on track after struggling on the ground over the lsat three weeks since dominating UCF.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 11

Why USF Will Win

Cincinnati really isn’t playing all that well considering how good it is.

Wins are wins are wins, and it has managed to hold on, but Navy, Tulane, and Tulsa are all having problems this season and they all had too many good moments.

Cincinnati hasn’t hit 125 yards on the ground in any of the last three games, it’s not all that big on controlling the clock, and it’s coming off a three-turnover game against Tulsa.

USF stayed alive in the 54-42 loss to Houston with two kickoff returns for scores from Brian Battie, a little bit of a passing attack, and …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 10

What’s Going To Happen

USF isn’t playing all that poorly, but Cincinnati is so much better than it showed.

It’s coming – the Bearcats have too much explosion and too much production on the lines to continue to be so mediocre. USF will be jacked at home, it’ll play well for most of the first half, and then the Bearcat defense will take over.

The Cincinnati running game will look the part again as it dominates the last 20 minutes.

Cincinnati vs Tulsa Game Preview

Why Tulsa Will Win

Does Tulsa have the formula to pull this off?

Cincinnati has been more than fine – the sign of a good team is being able to win games when you don’t have the top-shelf effort and performance – but something isn’t going quite right if you’re struggling to get by Navy and Tulane.

Tulsa has hardly been perfect, and this isn’t nearly the same type of team as the 2020 version that pushed the Bearcats so hard in the AAC Championship, but the ground game has been good at times over the last month, the downfield passing game is dangerous, and there’s no pressure.

The heat is all on the other side. Cincinnati can’t just win this game, it has to annihilate the Golden Hurricane to get more respect in the College Football Playoff world. The team is going to press.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 10

Why Cincinnati Will Win

No, we’re not supposed to do Aaron Rodgers bits right now, but …

R-E-L-A-X.

No, Cincinnati wasn’t good enough against Tulsa, and it sure as shoot should’ve been better against Navy, but everything is more than fine.

The running game needs to get nasty again after two weeks off, but Tulsa is decent against the run – it’s okay. The methodical Bearcat passing attack can balance things out.

The Bearcat secondary has been a rock all year – only Indiana and Notre Dame have been able to hit 200 yards – and Tulsa passing game isn’t consistent enough and it’s not efficient.

There will be takeaways to be had.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

It seems like there are two ways this could go.

Either Cincinnati is starting to play with the weight of the College Football Playoff world on its shoulders, and it’s not doing what it’s supposed to, or it’s about to come out and put up one of its better performances of the season.

Tulsa isn’t bad enough to let this get out of control, but it will make just enough mistakes to let the Bearcats take over.

It’ll be another one of those games.

The final score will be fine, and there won’t be any real danger at home, but it won’t be quite as pretty as it might need to be. Give a decent Tulsa team a little credit for that.

Where is Alabama in the latest Bowl Game projections? USA TODAY shakes up top-4

Where is Alabama projected to land during Bowl Game season?

The Alabama Crimson Tide currently reside within the top-four teams in the nation, which puts them in position to compete for a national championship in the College Football Playoff.

Entering the 2021 season, most college football fans would tell you that the No. 1 team would be a shoe-in for the playoff. However, Texas A&M somewhat foiled those plans.

The top-ranked Crimson Tide lost on the road to a then-unranked Aggies team, dropping them as low as No. 5 on the rankings.

Now that the team has clawed their way back near the top, fans are wondering what’s in store for Alabama after the regular season.

Well, the latest USA TODAY Bowl Game projections gives insight as to where they could land.

According to the projections, the top-four teams are (in no particular order): Georgia, Ohio State, Alabama, Oklahoma.

Georgia and Oklahoma would face off in the Cotton Bowl, while Alabama and Ohio State will get a rematch of the 2020 College Football Playoff national championship back in Miami, Florida for the Orange Bowl.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the Crimson Tide as they gear up for the 2021 postseason.

What are Alabama’s statistical odds of winning the SEC & making CFP? FiveThirtyEight gives insight

The numbers have been crunched, what are Alabama’s statistical chances of winning in the postseason?

The Alabama Crimson Tide come off of a BYE week as the No. 3 team in the nation, and look to this upcoming Saturday to face LSU at home as the regular season begins to wind down.

Starting the season as the top-ranked team, Alabama seemed like a lock to make the College Football Playoff, which they have only missed once (2019) since its inception in 2014. However, a loss to a then-unranked Texas A&M team dropped Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide back all the way to No. 5.

Now, Bryce Young has helped his team climb all the way back up into the top-three, and back into contention for the College Football Playoff.

One small wrinkle is that Alabama will likely have to face a familiar foe in the SEC Championship game: No. 1 Georgia. While the Bulldogs have been led by Kirby Smart, the team has yet to defeat Nick Saban; but, then again, something feels a bit different with this year’s team over in Athens.

FiveThirtyEight, a data firm, reveals the updated  statistical likelihood of Alabama making their way back into the top-four to make the playoff and compete for national championship No. 19.

According to the numbers, Nick Saban and Alabama have a 37% chance to win the SEC title, a 52% chance to make the playoff and a 20% chance to win the national championship.

All of the aforementioned statistics improved from their previous findings last week.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover the Crimson Tide as they continue to play throughout the 2021 college football season.

Is Alabama projected to make playoffs? Latest bowl game predictions have interesting top-4

Some very big shakeups in these projections, and even more interesting matchups!

The Alabama Crimson Tide opened the season as the top-ranked team in the nation, following a fully-undefeated, national championship season in 2020. The team even operated as the No. 1 team for nearly half a season, before they fell to an unranked Texas A&M team on the road.

Now, Georgia is the highest-ranked team, and the three spots below it, which will join the Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff, have seen a starting lack of consistency since the Crimson Tide loss.

Alabama now ranks as the No. 3 team, with Cincinnati in second and Oklahoma at fourth.

USA TODAY recently released their latest bowl game predictions for the end of the season, including the Orange Bowl and Cotton Bowl, which are this season’s playoff semifinal contests.

In the Cotton Bowl, they have the Sooners of Oklahoma taking on the Georgia Bulldogs.

The Orange Bowl, according to the projection, is a rematch of the 2020 national championship game, which also took place in Miami, Alabama vs. Ohio State.

The projections don’t include the rankings, but the inclusion of Ohio State and the absence of Cincinnati are surely a big shake up compared to the current rankings.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to cover the Crimson Tide as they continue on through the 2021 college football season and look to capture national championship No. 19.

Cincinnati vs Navy Game Preview

Why Cincinnati Will Win

The defense can tackle.

Obviously, dealing with the Navy offense isn’t like handling any other rushing attack, but the Bearcat D has yet to allow more than 170 rushing yards this season, the NFL talent in the secondary can tackle, and the pressure generated by the front that’s helped account for 40 tackles for loss per game should be a big bother.

And it’s not like the Navy rushing attack is rocking.

It was stuffed by Air Force for 36 yards, it isn’t consistent, and even when it has been fantastic it hasn’t necessarily meant success – it ran for 337 yards in the 49-7 loss to Marshall.

Week 8 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Navy Will Win

But … it’s the Navy option attack.

The Cincinnati schedule – as Bearcats are all too sick of hearing about – isn’t all that great to finish up the season. SMU is dangerous, but if there’s one thing that might be able to derail this special season, it’s an option attack that on the right day, could be the differentiating factor.

It’s Navy, so it’s going to control the clock for close to 35 minutes, the rushing offense will have its moments, and there’s a shot that it could keep this close at home – like it did against SMU – with a chance to pull this off late.

However …

Week 8 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

There’s a good chance Cincinnati outgains Navy on the ground.

As the wins over Temple and UCF showed, this is a fully-focused Bearcat team that isn’t taking anyone lightly.

Navy will have a few good drives, but the defense won’t be able to slow down the Bearcat machine that will grind through the first half and bust through early in the second.
