Bills 2022 rookie class ranked in middle of NFL by CBS Sports

Too high or just right for the #Bills’ rookies in 2022?

The Buffalo Bills’ 2022 NFL draft rookie class did not pop off the charts. However, they still received a solid level of praise from one outlet.

CBS Sports ranked all 32 rookie classes from this past season. Overall, the Bills finished right in the middle of the league at No. 16 overall, a placement that some of the most-loyal Buffalo fans might not even consider.

First, here’s how CBS Sports came to their conclusion:

16. Buffalo Bills

Year 1 hits: CB Christian Benford, RB James Cook, CB Kaiir Elam

Benford had five pass breakups and a pick despite two long lapses sidelined due to injury. Cook didn’t generate a major stir as Buffalo’s backup runner, so you probably won’t believe he averaged 5.7 yards per carry. Elam didn’t start all year, so his action was limited. He did finish with four defended passes and a pair of interceptions.

Buffalo’s rookie class wasn’t a total loss, but it felt like many other teams around the NFL got more contributions from their first-year pros than the Bills. CBS Sports’ ranking of them might be a bit generous.

While Elam did have a pair of interceptions and came on late in the year, as a first-round pick, he did not see Round 1 contribution levels in 2022. The Bills had to bring him along slower than they probably wanted. So much so that Benford, a sixth-round rookie, might have had the better first year.

But this is just one season. Buffalo might not have gotten huge impacts in 2022 from their rookies, but with the team up tight against the salary cap early this spring, it appears likely that several of these players will be leaned on a lot more moving forward.

Overall, the Bills rookie class was also the third-highest graded amongst AFC East teams. The New York Jets, who had both the Offensive (Garrett Wilson) and Defensive (Sauce Gardner) Rookies of the Year took the top-overall spot in the NFL in little surprise.

Here’s a full divisional roundup:

  • 24. Miami Dolphins
  • 16. Buffalo Bills
  • 10. New England Patriots
  • 1. New York Jets

3 areas the Bills must improve in during the postseason

3 areas the #Bills must improve in during the postseason:

Here are three areas where the Buffalo Bills need to improve in during their run in the NFL postseason:

Bills place Damar Hamlin on injured reserve, Christian Benford activated

#Bills place Damar Hamlin on injured reserve, Christian Benford activated:

The Buffalo Bills have made their anticipated move toward injured reserve, but in a positive twist, the team will add another player back in the secondary.

Following his hospitalization for cardiac arrest, safety Damar Hamlin has been placed on injured reserve. Hamlin, 24, has had a slow but recently positive recovery from the scary injury he endured on Monday against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Taking his place on the roster ahead of facing the New England Patriots (8-8) on Sunday is cornerback Christian Benford.

Benford suffered an oblique injury during his team’s 28-25 win against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving. Soon after, he was placed on IR.

Last week, Benford returned to practice as the team activated him from injured reserve. However, he only just was placed on the Bills’ active roster.

Earlier in the week after Hamlin’s injury, Buffalo (12-3) signed safety Jared Mayden from Jets practice squad.

Making room for his was cornerback Xavier Rhodes, who was released. Rhodes had started for the Bills earlier this year, however, in recent weeks he had been a healthy scratch.

LOOK: Bills’ Christian Benford returns to practice after injured reserve

LOOK: #Bills’ Christian Benford returns to practice after injured reserve stint:

Christian Benford was designated to return from injured reserve by the Bills (12-3) ahead of the team’s Week 17 matchup with the Bengals (11-4).

Benford is likely not going to return until we’re closer to the end of the 21-day window he’s now allowed to practice with his team. However, he is allowed to play against Cincy if Buffalo activate him… so you never know.

But with practice more so on the mind, check out clips of Benford return from an oblique injury via the video shared by local media below:

Bills designate Christian Benford for return from injured reserve

#Bills designate Christian Benford for return from injured reserve:

Christian Benford is nearing his return.

The Buffalo Bills (12-3) announced ahead of their Week 17 meeting with the Cincinnati Bengals (11-4) on Monday that the rookie cornerback has been designated to return from injured reserve.

Benford suffered an oblique injury during his team’s 28-25 win against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving. Soon after, he was placed on IR.

At the same time, Buffalo signed veteran corner Xavier Rhodes to the active roster. Rhodes is still on it.

Currently the roster is full at 53 players.

However, designating Benford for return does not mean he’s on it or able to play just yet.

The new designation opens a 21-day window for Benford to practice with his teammates as he preps for a return to the lineup. Buffalo is allowed to bring him back on the roster at any time during that window, even before facing the Bengals, however, someone would have to be taken off of the roster to make room for him.

Most times when the Bills do designated a player to return, they do not play him immediately. The team have let players practice for that entire time period before making a decision. Throughout it all, Bills Wire will provide updates on Benford’s status as information is made available.

Stock up, stock down following the Bills’ win over the Browns

Stock up, stock down following the #Bills’ win over the #Browns:

Following the Buffalo Bills’ 31-23 win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 11, here is Bills Wire’s latest stock report:

Bills CB Christian Benford is the NFL rookie we’re not talking about enough

The Buffalo Bills landed a huge steal in the 2022 NFL draft with sixth-round cornerback Christian Benford

When the Buffalo Bills went into the 2022 NFL draft last April, they were looking for a running mate to line up opposite Pro Bowl cornerback Tre’Davious White, so they traded up in the first round for Florida’s Kaiir Elam.

While Elam has been solid in his own right so far this season, it was their sixth-round pick out of Villanova who has stepped up in a big way, and been the most pleasant surprise of their rookie class.

In the wake of a nagging injury to White, and a recent injury to Elam, Christian Benford has been thrown into the fire, and hasn’t flinched.

His biggest and most productive came last week in the Bills’ close loss to the Vikings, in which he broke up three passes and grabbed a crucial interception while being targeted seven times by Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins.

Benford has clearly been developing quickly since training camp, and continues to prove himself as one of the best instant-impact gems in this year’s draft, bringing great value and depth for such a late selection.

Once Elam and White get fully healthy, the Bills’ secondary will become a position of strength, after heading into the previous offseason as a question mark. Buffalo’s ability to find gems, both in the draft and free agency, has been key to developing one of the best rosters in the league, and they’ve done it again with Benford.

Bills defense breaks down Taron Johnson’s game-winning INT vs. Chiefs

#Bills defense breaks down Taron Johnson’s game-winning INT vs. #Chiefs:

The Bills won their regular season matchup with their AFC rival Chiefs in Kansas City Sunday 24-20 in a close competition that was sealed in the final minutes of play.

A lazer TD pass to Dawson Knox from QB Josh Allen put Buffalo ahead, and the Chiefs got the ball back with 1:04 left in the game.

The Bills know all too well the importance of closing a close game out against Kansas City in all three phases of football, as their special teams and defense came up short in overtime of their meeting during last year’s playoffs.

A critical 13 seconds of overtime play in that contest allowed Kansas City to knock Buffalo out of the 2021 postseason. But this time around things went differently, as it was the Bills turn to end a game for the Chiefs in 13 seconds of gameplay.

In those 13 seconds, CB Taron Johnson made a game-sealing heads-up play to intercept Chiefs QB and insurance rate enthusiast Patrick Mahomes. The play was reviewed by officials and upheld.

With less than a minute left on the game clock, the Bills offense was able to kneel and run the time off to complete the victory.

During the review of Johnson’s pick, S Jordan Poyer asked him about the play.

“I just asked T – I said, ‘T, did you catch it?” Poyer said per The Buffalo News. “‘Yeah, I caught it.’ I said, ‘All right!’ I trust T, ‘cause he said he caught it, so I believed him.”

And he was right to do so, as the 2018 fourth-round pick out of Weber State came through in a big moment in helping the Bills get the win.

“We loaded the coverage,” Poyer continued. “We were playing zone, and (Johnson) just read it perfectly. I told him it was probably one of the greatest plays, other than Micah’s pick last year, that I’ve ever seen on the field.”

A veteran leader on defense for Buffalo, he also pointed out how persistence won the day on the defensive side of the ball.

“Nobody played perfect today, and it was always just, ‘Hey, next play, next play, next play.’ And at the end of the day, T came up with the biggest play of the game.”

Two other members of the Bills defense who were attacking on the play also shared how the play unfolded from their perspective as well.

“Me, in my head, I’m thinking I just gotta get him down, get down,” OLB Von Miller said during his press session. “Made an inside move, he flushed out, and we had Taron Johnson right there for the interception. A great team play, it just feels good to go out there and do your job.”

Bills CB Christian Benford dropped back out on the play and drew the attention of Mahomes who was eyeing a corner route. And as he tried to reset and quickly throw to his receiver (Moore) Bills LB Matt Milano was in his way, and when he did throw the pass on the third needed reset Johnson was there to swoop in and take the ball away.

Still, it was Benford who first thought it was coming to him with his coverage.

“I’m gonna be honest, I thought I was about to have it,” the Buffalo CB said per The Buffalo News. “But then I saw him come out of nowhere and catch it, and I was hype. Like I was hype for him. I kind of was too hype for him, because I forgot to block, but I was hype.”

The win was Buffalo’s second consecutive regular-season victory over Kansas City, and a game with potential playoff implications as the two clubs have clashed in each of their last two postseasons. In those meetings, Kansas City came out on top, but the Bills reloaded this offseason adding to their roster through the NFL Draft and free agency.

Buffalo is hoping this year to make the playoffs and for things to end differently there as well.

They showed their improvement on defense against KC on Sunday, intercepting Mahomes twice during the game, as the team’s first-round selection in this year’s draft, rookie CB Kaiir Elam, grabbed a pick as well on the Chiefs first offensive drive. He now has takeaways in back-to-back games, though he directed credit to Johnson.

“That was way bigger than my interception, I think,” Elam said to the press. “It was something that was much needed.”

As for Johnson, he was quick to point to the impact of his teammates in making the play possible.

“Thankful for the pressure – Matt (Milano) and Von (Miller) just getting after him,” He said to the media. “And I see 2-4 (receiver Skyy Moore) coming across the field, and just got in front of the pass.”

The end of the last meeting between these two teams loomed over the Bills offseason, and Johnson knew it would take making a play when needed this time around for things to end differently.

“We knew we needed to make a play,” the CB added. “Last time, we didn’t make (a) play. So, just making sure that when we have the opportunity, just coming up with the ball.”

Could Bills CB Christian Benford return as soon as next week?

Could #Bills CB Christian Benford return as soon as next week?

The Buffalo Bills will not have rookie cornerback Christian Benford in the lineup against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 5.

Benford had hand surgery and is still healing up. The team ruled him out on Friday.

While going under the knife makes it sound like Benford could be out for awhile, the case was made that he could return as soon as next week.

According to Bills blogger and physical therapist known as “Banged Up Bills” on Twitter, there’s a chance that Benford’s injury could be dealt with. Upon seeing the injured hand, the suggestion made was having Benford’s hand wrapped up in a club so it’s protected.

Nothing for sure, but the injury analysis can be found below, in full:

After hosting the Steelers, the Bills have a big matchup against the Kanas City Chiefs in Week 6. Time will tell if Benford suits up for that big matchup against quarterback Patrick Mahomes & Co.

However, Buffalo’s bye week comes after the Chiefs meeting. The Bills could opt to allow Benford to fully heal up through the bye, but bare minimum, there appears to be a good chance he’s back in the fold by Week 8 against the Green Bay Packers.

Buffalo Bills cornerback Christian Benford is set to miss time. He suffered a hand injury in his team’s 21-19 loss to the Miami Dolphins in Week 3.

Benford eventually had surgery on his injury. It’s unclear how long he will be sidelined, but he is still in Orchard Park.

After having that procedure done, Benford had a large wrap on his hand while watching practice.
