3 Jaguars to watch on defense vs. Bucs

The Jags defense will need to have a solid day Sunday against the Bucs passing attack, which could lead to Josh Allen getting more snaps.

The Jacksonville Jaguars went winless in November and will look to get away from that in December. First up on their schedule for the upcoming month are their in-state rivals in the Tampa Bay Bucs, who are coming off a solid win against the Atlanta Falcons.

Here are three Jaguars to watch on the defensive side of the ball, as the Jags try to cool down a hot Bucs offense:

The Jags’ passing defense will be very important in Sunday’s game. Bruce Arians has his group clicking through the air as they rank fourth in passing yards (288.1 YPG), fourth in total yards (386.4 YPG) and third in points scored (28.4 PPG).

A big part of their success is due to their dynamic duo at the receiver position in Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, who have nine and seven touchdowns on the season, respectively. Both receivers will also roll into Sunday’s game with over 1,000 yards receiving and will be matched up against A.J. Bouye and Tre Herndon.

With Arians and former Jags quarterback turned coordinator Byron Leftwich making the game-plan, the Cards will test Herndon more than Bouye, and he must answer the call as he did against the New York Jets when he had two picks. However, if he doesn’t it could be a long day for the Jags on defense.

Bucs WR Chris Godwin proudly sports that Snickers bling

Check out Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin sporting an iced-out Snickers chain because, why not?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin had a huge performance last week in the team’s 35-22 win over the Atlanta Falcons, catching seven passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

Godwin’s big day not only gave him the first 1,000-yard season of his young career, but it also earned him the coveted Snickers chain.

For those wondering what that is, it’s an “iced-out chain created by famed jeweler Ben Baller.” Each week, the chain goes to a player “who has not only shown hunger for more with a huge game or play on the field, but who is also driven to do more off the field.”

Check out Godwin sporting the iced-out chain below.

This is cool and all, but I wish we could’ve seen former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch sporting an iced-out Skittles chain during his career, his favorite candy.

Niners LB Kwon Alexander is a big fan of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin

See what former Tampa Bay Buccaneers linebacker Kwon Alexander had to say about his former teammates.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers easily have the best receiving duo in the league in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

In last week’s win over the Atlanta Falcons, both receivers surpassed the 1,000-yard mark on the season. Evans (1,043 yards) now has six-straight 1,000-yard seasons to begin his career, tied with Hall of Famer Randy Moss for the most in NFL history.

For Godwin (1,071 yards), the third-year star out of Penn State, it was his first time eclipsing the mark. But, given how well he’s played this season and his age (23), it probably won’t be his last.

The duo has given Bucs fans something to cheer about this season, and it seems as though one former Buccaneers player is among those fans.

Alexander was drafted by Tampa Bay in the fourth round of the 2015 NFL Draft out of LSU, but signed with the San Francisco 49ers this past offseason. Alexander tore his pectoral muscle in the Niners’ Week 9 win over the Arizona Cardinals and has been ruled out for the rest of the year.

Which means he has plenty of time to catch some Bucs games!

Map to Success: Keys to a Bucs win in Jacksonville

Find out how the Tampa Bay Buccaneers can pull off the upset against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 13.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are coming off a game Bruce Arians called the best complete team game of the season. They didn’t just win against the Atlanta Falcons, the Bucs beat the Falcons on every side of the ball. The Bucs (4-7), are on the road again this week in Jacksonville to square off against the Jaguars (4-7), and looking to start a winning streak of their own. If the Bucs want to beat the Jaguars, here are some of the key match-ups that they must win.

Stop Leonard Fournette

Fournette sits just 49 yards shy of his second 1,000-yard season. The Jaguars sit at the bottom of the barrel in scoring, averaging just 19 points per game, but they can move the ball. The Jaguars are top-15 in both rushing yards and passing yards per game, with Fournette leading the way in rushing yards and receptions with 56. The offense runs through the running back, and this should be the Buccaneers’ top priority heading into Sundays game.

Communicate on defense

DJ Chark is one of the young up-and-coming wide receiver stars in the league, and Nick Foles is hungry to prove why he was brought to Jacksonville. Without communication in the secondary for the Bucs, that could spell disaster, especially if they are stacking the box to slow down Fournette. Outside of an early deep pass from Matt Ryan to Calvin Ridley last week, the young secondary of the Bucs were able to not give up big plays and keep the Falcons receivers in front of them, while the defensive line went to work.

Limit turnovers

This is not the Jaguars defense you’ve been accustom to over the past few seasons. They no longer have a no fly zone, and they rank 29th in the league in rushing yards allowed per game. It just so happens the Buccaneers have the red-hot receiving duo of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, whom have both eclipsed 1,000 receiving yards on the season. Jameis Winston must play smart and limit turnovers. In the game against the Falcons, Winston threw two early interceptions that the Bucs were able to overcome, but you cannot do that to your defense and expect to be bailed out every time.

Watch: Calvin Ridley credits Julio Jones for playing through pain

The Falcons’ dynamic wide receiver duo of Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley was outplayed on Sunday by the Bucs’ combo of Chris Godwin and Mike Evans.

The Falcons’ dynamic wide receiver duo of Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley was outplayed on Sunday by the Bucs’ combo of Chris Godwin and Mike Evans.

Jones and Ridley combined for 153 yards and a touchdown, while Godwin and Evans would combine for 234 yards and two scores. Jones injured his shoulder late in the first half, but would eventually return in the third quarter, although visibly in pain.

Speaking with reporters after the game, Ridley was quick to credit Jones for toughing it out — which you can watch below in this tweet from ESPN’s Vaughn McClure:

Seven receptions, 184 yards and two touchdowns is how Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin finished out the Bucs’ 35-22 over the Atlanta Falcons. There are some cases for players like Devin White, Carlton Davis, and even Jameis Winston to be our player of the week, however, it’s hard to go against the tremendous production of Godwin today.

Midway through the first quarter, Winston connected with Godwin on a 71-yard touchdown pass. The coverage was good and perhaps the window was too tight, but Godwin hauled it in while beating the defense on his way to the end zone.

In the second quarter, Winston threw the ball from the Falcons’ one-yard line, well behind Godwin, who was able to turn around and reel it in for his second score of the day, putting the Bucs up 13-10 at that point.

Congratulations to Godwin for winning the Bucs Wire Player of the Game!

A few of the big milestones reached in the Bucs’ win over the Falcons

See some of the big milestones reached during the Buccaneers’ road win over the Atlanta Falcons.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers proved once again to be warriors of the road today, as they downed the red-hot Atlanta Falcons 35-22.

Despite two first-quarter interceptions, Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston settled down, finishing the day with 313 passing yards, three touchdowns and those two picks. Perhaps the best number on his stat line was the big fat zero next to sacks taken.

The win pulled the Bucs to 4-7 and sent the 3-8 Falcons to the bottom of the NFC South standings. The game not only helped the Buccaneers avoid remaining in the doldrums of the division, but it also allowed a few players to set some pretty big milestones.

Take a look.

Vita Vea for the score

Nose tackle Vita Vea has lined up on offense before, but today, the big man got his first career touchdown reception. You’ve got to love the way Byron Leftwich and Bruce Arians are utilizing Vea. The guy is an athletic beast, so why not design some offensive packages just for him? Now, if only we can get Ndamukong Suh lined up in the slot…

Godwin’s career year continues

Third-year receiver Chris Godwin continued his breakout season today, with his first reception going for 71 yards and a touchdown. For the game, Godwin had seven receptions for 184 yards and two touchdowns. He now has nine receiving touchdowns on the season (career high), amd, those 184 yards put him at 1,071 on the season, giving him his first season over 1,000 yards. Congrats to Godwin. It’s a well-earned milestone and only a sign of things to come.

What about Mike?

Of course, let’s not forget about Mike Evans, who needed just seven more receiving yards to get his sixth-straight 1,000-yard season, which would tie him with Randy Moss for most in NFL history to begin a career. Evans finished the day with four receptions for 50 yards, giving him 1,043 on the year. Evans is just entering his prime, so sky’s the limit for what he can do. He may even make a run at Jerry Rice’s seemingly unbreakable record.

Twitter reacts to Chris Godwin’s 71-yard touchdown

See how Twitter reacted to the long 71-yard touchdown reception by Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, who threw four interceptions last week against the New Orleans Saints, threw one on the team’s opening drive today against the Atlanta Falcons, on the Bucs’ second play from scrimmage.

But, as has usually been the case with Winston, he followed up a bad play with a spectacular one, like this 71-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Godwin on the Bucs’ very next drive.

For Godwin, it was his eighth touchdown reception of the season, a new career high for the third-year receiver out of Penn State. The 71 yards also puts him at 958 on the season, meaning he’s inching closer to the first 1,000-yard receiving season of his career.

Mike Evans and Chris Godwin truly are the league’s dynamic duo

A quick look at the stats proves that Buccaneers receivers Mike Evans and Chris Godwin truly are the best duo in the NFL today.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may be just 3-7, but their offense is once again one of the best in the league. The Bucs currently rank sixth in both overall offense and scoring offense, and a big reason for that has been the stellar play of their wide receiving duo of Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Evans, the franchise’s all-time leader in receiving yards, is inching ever-closer to another 1,000-yard season, which would tie him with Hall of Famer Randy Moss for the most 1,000-yard seasons to start a career (6).

Godwin, meanwhile, may not be the franchiser receiver Evans is (yet), but he’s made a huge impact in his third season with the Bucs. Godwin had six touchdown receptions in the team’s first five games, and has already set a new career-high in receiving yards with 887.

And, this graphic from the NFL shows just how great the duo of Evans and Godwin has been this season.

Take a look.

How about giving a little love to the NFC South here? Four of the top five receivers in the league right now are on NFC South teams. Michael Thomas, Julio Jones and Evans are names you’d usually expect to see atop this list at some point during the season, but credit Godwin for putting his stamp on this season.

Hopefully, when the Bucs travel to Atlanta in Week 12, Godwin and Evans can both help carry the team to victory. That is, of course, if Jameis Winston can avoid turning the ball over.

Saints backups impressed when filling in for injured starters vs. Bucs

The New Orleans Saints were without key players Marshon Lattimore, Andrus Peat, and Deonte Harris, but backups and fill-ins impressed.

The New Orleans Saints were in a tough spot in Week 11. Injuries struck a number of key starters, including cornerback Marshon Lattimore and special teams returner Deonte Harris (each battling hamstring injuries), as well as Pro Bowl left guard Andrus Peat (sidelined for an extended time with a broken arm). These injuries meant that a number of New Orleans Saints backups had to step up into starting roles, and luckily, they rise to the occasion against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Let’s break it down.

Nick Easton in for Andrus Peat

New Orleans knows exactly what they have in Peat — a player that can execute most blocks and maybe get into the Pro Bowl as an alternate. However, Peat’s lengthy injury history (from his broken hand last season, to the broken leg the year before, to enduring ankle issues before that) and now a broken arm this season has kept him far from the discussion of the league’s elite.

Many fans believed that Will Clapp would take over for the injured Peat; however, it would be the veteran Nick Easton who would get the nod. Easton had spent much of the season as a healthy inactive before being called up for the Week 11 matchup with the Buccaneers. It was easy to see how Easton impacted the game, and how the Saints had made the right choice.

After taking six sacks against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 10, quarterback Drew Brees stayed upright with zero sacks for the entire game against Tampa Bay. A large part of this was due to the fact that Terron Armstead had recovered from his bout with the flu, but credit must be given to Easton for his level of play next to him.

With Peat out for much of the regular season, Easton should be expected to get the majority of snaps at left guard, and it’s possible that the offensive line’s play will improve because of it.
