Mike Evans knew Chris Godwin was going to be great

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans said he knew fellow teammate Chris Godwin was going to be great.

Perhaps one of the biggest draws for Tom Brady when it came to choosing the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as his new home was the fact that he would get to play with two Pro Bowl wide receivers in Mike Evans and Chris Godwin.

Both Evans and Godwin eclipsed 1,100 yards last season. For Evans, it was par for the course. It marked his sixth-straight season with 1,000 receiving yards, tied with Hall of Famer Randy Moss for the most ever to begin a career.

But for Godwin, who finished with career-highs across the board with 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns, it was the first time going over 1,000 yards in his three-year career. And now that Tom Brady is the man under center, Godwin could see his numbers grow in 2020, which could help him land a big payday soon.

Evans and Godwin make up arguably the best receiving tandem in the game today, and it seems Evans knew Godwin was ready to burst onto the scene.

It’s great to see Evans show respect for Godwin. We’ve seen many times before how a star receiver can grow jealous of a young emerging star (see Pittsburgh with Antonio Brown and JuJu Smith-Schuster).

Fans are anxious to see what Evans and Godwin can do with Brady at quarterback. Hopefully, we’ll find out soon enough.

Throwback Thursday: Chris Godwin mic’d up for Week 1 of the 2019 season

Take a look back at a mic’d up Chris Godwin during last season’s Week 1 opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

2020 could be another big year for wide receiver Chris Godwin. The Bucs star had his coming out party in 2019, finishing the year with 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns, earning his first Pro Bowl selection.

Godwin will now have Tom Brady throwing him passes, meaning a big payday for the Bucs receiver could well be on the horizon.

In honor of #ThrowbackThursday, let’s take a look back at a mic’d up Godwin during last season’s Week 1 opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

Why the Buccaneers would be wise to extend Chris Godwin’s contract now

Dan Graziano gives his list of players who could get contract extensions before the 2020 season. See why he thinks Chris Godwin could.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers know that the 2020 season will be one of the most closely-watched in franchise history. All eyes will be on the Bucs, who have gone from NFL doormat the past decade to immediate Super Bowl contenders after the signing of quarterback Tom Brady in free agency.

Along with Brady and his former Patriots teammate Rob Gronkowski, the Bucs have further bolstered an offense that finished third in the league last season. One of the biggest reasons for Tampa Bay’s success in the passing game in 2019 was the emergence of third-year receiver Chris Godwin, who finished with career highs across the board — 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns.

Godwin’s big year will likely earn him a big payday soon, and ESPN’s Dan Graziano believes the Bucs should do themselves a favor and extend Godwin before the 2020 season begins.

Per Graziano:

“A 2017 third-round pick, Godwin earned a proven performance escalator that bumped his 2020 salary up to about $2.1 million. But after finishing third in the league in receiving yards (1,333) and tied for fourth in touchdown catches (nine) in 2019, Godwin is in line for an extension that the Bucs might want to do before he has a year of catching passes from Tom Brady. It helps Godwin’s chances that Rob Gronkowski will come off the books next summer, and Mike Evans’ cap number will drop by $4.5 million from 2020 to 2021.”

Godwin proved last season he is a star in the making, and with Evans playing alongside him catching passes from Brady, the sky’s the limit for the former Penn State star heading into 2020. The Bucs have said they want to extend Godwin, so it seems to be more a matter of when and not if.

A reminder of just how great Chris Godwin is

This touchdown catch by Bucs wide receiver Chris Godwin against the Atlanta Falcons demonstrates how great he is.

Chris Godwin has a new number, a new hobby, and a new quarterback, but fans can expect to see the same drive and devotion from the former Penn State star in 2020.

After a career-year in 2019, Godwin will be looking to make another big jump in Year 4 of his NFL career. And with Tom Brady as his quarterback, it seems the sky’s the limit for Godwin. You can count on Brady to look for the former No. 12 early and often next season, and hopefully, Brady won’t make poor throws like the one you’ll see below from Jameis Winston.

Take a look back at this touchdown catch by Godwin, who bailed Winston out after the quarterback threw behind him.

That’s just ridiculous concentration right there by Godwin, and it’s plays like that that will likely earn him the next big wide receiver contract.

Chris Godwin comes to Jameis Winston’s defense

See what the Buccaneers wide receiver had to say about his former quarterback Jameis Winston, who threw 30 interceptions in 2019.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers finished 7-9 last season to miss the playoffs for the 12th-straight year. Much of the blame for the team’s shortcomings fell on the shoulders of quarterback Jameis Winston, who despite finishing the year with 5,109 passing yards and 33 touchdowns, tossed a league-high 30 interceptions.

With Tom Brady now officially a member of the Buccaneers, Winston’s time in Tampa Bay is done. The number one pick in the 2015 NFL draft is still searching for a home, but despite his departure from the Bucs, teammates still hold him in high regard.

Wide receiver Chris Godwin, who experienced a career-best season in 2019 with 86 receptions, 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns, came to the defense of his former quarterback in a recent interview with The Boardroom.

Here’s part of what Godwin had to say (via ESPN):

“I definitely think [Winston] got more of the blame than he deserved. I think he’s a really, really talented quarterback. Obviously there are things that he does that you can’t teach, and there are plays that he made that just weren’t smart plays. But a lot of the mistakes and interceptions that he made, I would say half of them were because of a bad read on someone else’s part.”

Several former NFL quarterbacks, including Carson Palmer, who played for Arians during their time with the Arizona Cardinals, felt Winston was primed for a big Year 2 under Arians, whose offense can be hard to master. But with the Bucs being able to lure Brady away from the Patriots, Winston will never get that shot now.

Chris Godwin is here to provide you with some Monday motivation

See what Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin posted on his Instagram today for #MotivationMonday.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers Chris Godwin had one of the biggest breakout seasons of 2019. The third-year pro out of Penn State put up career numbers with 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns, earning Pro Bowl and Second-Team All-Pro honors in the process.

Head coach Bruce Arians has said that signing Godwin to an extension is “high” on the team’s list of offseason priorities, but don’t think for a second that a new hefty contract is going to stifle Godwin’s drive for greatness.

The receiver took to Instagram today to post this motivational quote on his story. Take a look.

Chris Godwin lands at No. 20 on PFF’s list of the top 101 players of 2019

See why Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin was named one of the top 20 players in the NFL in 2019.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers may not have been postseason participants this year, but their season felt like a win in many ways, namely, that they managed to avoid a third-straight 5-11 season by going 7-9, including 4-2 down the stretch.

While quarterback Jameis Winston’s 5,000-yard-30-interception season was the main storyline of the Bucs’ 2019 season, the emergence of third-year receiver Chris Godwin cannot be overlooked.

Godwin finished the year with career highs across the board: 86 receptions, 1,333 yards and nine touchdowns in just 14 games. His stellar play earned him the No. 20 spot on Pro Football Focus’ list of the top 101 players from the 2019 season.

Here’s what they had to say about the Bucs’ star receiver:

“This season, Chris Godwin emerged as one of the best receivers in all of football, and he was a human highlight reel in Tampa Bay where Jameis Winston was intent on airing the ball out and only vaguely concerned with whether the ball went close to its intended receiver. Godwin caught 75.4% of his targets (while Jameis completed just 60.7% of all his passes) and had just one drop all season despite making several circus catches. Overall, when targeting Godwin, Winston had a passer rating of 121.7.”

Fellow Bucs receiver Mike Evans landed at No. 49:

“Due to injury, Mike Evans played as many as 200 fewer snaps than some of the other wideouts on this list, and yet, he still finished the year with 1,157 yards and eight touchdowns. Evans gained 2.3 yards per route run this season and formed the league’s most explosive receiver tandem with Chris Godwin in Bruce Arians’ high-octane passing offense in Tampa. Evans made some of the biggest catches of the year for the Bucs and makes the PFF Top 101 for the fourth time in his career.”

Shockingly, Tampa Bay linebacker Shaquil Barrett, who led the NFL in sacks this past season with 19.5, did not make this list. Talk about a snub.

Which Buccaneers player leveled up the most in 2019?

Find out which player on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers stepped up in the biggest way in 2019.

Bucs quarterback Jameis Winston had one of the most entertainingly spectacular seasons in NFL history this year, throwing for over 5,000 yards while also tossing 33 touchdowns and 30 interceptions, becoming the first player ever to do that.

But, let’s not forget about the breakout season of third-year receiver Chris Godwin. The former Penn State star entered the 2019 season with a mountain of expectations after a big 2018, when he had 59 receptions for 842 yards and seven touchdowns. Head coach Bruce Arians even said last offseason that Godwin would be close to a 100-catch guy this season.

Arians couldn’t have been more right. Despite, missing the last two regular season games with a hamstring injury, Godwin finished with career numbers across the board, 86 receptions for 1,333 yards and nine scores.

Not surprisingly, in ESPN’s list of the 32 players who leveled up the most in 2019, Godwin was the Bucs’ pick.

Per Jenna Laine:

“In his first season as a full-time starter, Godwin finished with 1,333 receiving yards — third most in the NFL despite missing the final two games of the season because of a hamstring injury. His nine touchdowns were also tied for fourth among the league’s receivers. Godwin benefited from a move inside in coach Bruce Arians’ offense, the same role once occupied by Arizona receiver Larry Fitzgerald. Arians said the priority is ‘high’ to re-sign Godwin to an extension: ‘He’s earned it.'”

I think Bucs fans would agree with Arians on that one.

Chris Godwin needs 313 more receiving yards to grab this Bucs record

See what franchise record Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin could nab before the season is over.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers head into Detroit Sunday to take on the Lions without their best receiver. Pro Bowler Mike Evans, who earlier this season became the only other receiver besides Hall of Famer Randy Moss to start his career with six-straight 1,000-yard seasons, injured his hamstring in Week 14’s win over the Colts and has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

It’s certainly a big loss, but fortunately, the Bucs have receiver Chris Godwin waiting in the wings to be the new No. 1 receiver. Godwin, the third-year receiver out of Penn State, has exploded onto the scene this season, already setting career highs across the board with receptions (81), yards (1,212) and touchdowns (9).

And, with just three games left to play, Godwin finds himself just 313 receiving yards shy of Mike Evans’ single-season record of 1,524 yards, set just last year. That means, Godwin needs to average just over 104.3 yards per game over the last three weeks.

While the Bucs may not be making a trip to the postseason this year, several players have a shot at making history, including Godwin.

Twitter reacts to Chris Godwin’s 71-yard touchdown

See how Twitter reacted to the long 71-yard touchdown reception by Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston, who threw four interceptions last week against the New Orleans Saints, threw one on the team’s opening drive today against the Atlanta Falcons, on the Bucs’ second play from scrimmage.

But, as has usually been the case with Winston, he followed up a bad play with a spectacular one, like this 71-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Chris Godwin on the Bucs’ very next drive.

For Godwin, it was his eighth touchdown reception of the season, a new career high for the third-year receiver out of Penn State. The 71 yards also puts him at 958 on the season, meaning he’s inching closer to the first 1,000-yard receiving season of his career.
