Chiefs HC Andy Reid comments on his appearance in the latest Snickers commercial

The success over the last few years for the Kansas City Chiefs has garnered plenty of notoriety in the public eye. Commercials and advertisements featuring team members frequently showcase some of their acting skills.

The usual suspects in these commercials have been starting quarterback and reigning league MVP Patrick Mahomes and All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce. The other popular commercial actor choice from the team is head coach Andy Reid. Reid appears in the latest Snickers commercial and gave his feedback on yet another comedic performance during Friday’s press conference.

“Yeah. I have no acting ability,” said Reid, “but that was as close to just being a coach as we could get. Plus, they gave me some free Snickers.”

Reid has appeared in two State Farm commercials alongside Mahomes, with the most recent gaining popularity for his desire to take nuggets, which he called “nuggies,” from his quarterback’s plate. Reid is a future candidate for the Hall of Fame for his exceptional coaching and may have found his post-football career as an actor.

Our 5 favorite Super Bowl commercials of all time

So. Good.

This Sunday we’ll see a showdown between Tom Brady’s Buccaneers and Pat Mahomes’ Chiefs, two iconic teams helmed by two iconic quarterbacks. And for a lot of people tuning in, they won’t care about any of that.

What they’ll care about are the commercials.

Super Bowl ads have become as much a part of the Super Bowl experience as the game itself. We see that every year in the incredible energy at Ad Meter — the USA TODAY site that allows you to rate your favorite Super Bowl commercials in real-time. (It’s seriously fun and totally free, and you can still sign up to be involved.)

To celebrate this part of the game, we’re counting down five of our favorite Super Bowl ads of all time. Some are iconic, others are just weird ones that, for whatever reason, we’ve never been able to get out of our heads.

Enjoy.

Seahawks WR Tyler Lockett named Snickers ‘Hungriest Player’ for Week 3

Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Tyler Lockett has been named SNICKERS “Hungriest Player” for his Week-4 performance against the Cowboys.

Aaron Jones, last week’s SNICKERS “Hungriest Player,” is passing the SNICKERS Chain to the next player who has shown hunger for more on the field. Following this weekend’s games, Tyler Lockett has been named SNICKERS Hungriest Player for Week 3 after totaling 100 yards on nine catches and three touchdowns, in a 31-38 win over the Cowboys.

Lockett is also the first player to receive the SNICKERS chain twice, having been named Hungriest Player last season for his week 9 performance.

This year’s chain is bigger and better, including more than 31 carats of 2,374 brilliant-cut diamonds, blue sapphires and red rubies. Throughout the season, SNICKERS and NFL players will be passing the SNICKERS chain – an iced-out chain that highlights the word “HUNGRY” and the iconic “S” from the SNICKERS brand logo, created by famed jeweler Ben Baller – from one player to the next. Past weeks’ chain recipients include:

Fans can win exclusive rewards by following @SNICKERS and #SNICKERSchain on social. Towards the end of the regular season, SNICKERS fans will weigh in on selecting the league’s ‘Hungriest Player of the Year,” and proceeds from the sale of the chain will be donated to benefit heroes on the frontlines fighting COVID-19.

Best of Ad Meter 2020: 5 highest-rated snack commercials

What’s a Super Bowl without snacks?

More so, what’s a Super Bowl without a few memorable snack commercials?

From the salty to the sweet, the cheesy goodness and the chocolate-covered delights, let’s head into Ad Meter’s pantry and take a look at the five highest-rated snack commercials from this year’s rankings.

Plus, we’ll find out what honors these spots are taking over at AdBlitz, a YouTube exclusive.

Ready? It’s snack time!

1. Doritos: “The Cool Ranch,” 6.62

The top snack spot this year goes to Doritos “The Cool Ranch,” starring Sam Elliott and Lil Nas X. It’s part showdown, part dance-off, and one of the funniest ads of Super Bowl LIV. See where it ranks in views for Comedy ads on AdBlitz here.

2. Cheetos: “Can’t Touch This,” 6.07

Cheetos rounded out the top 10 in this year’s Ad Meter, with its spot “Can’t Touch This.” The commercial has struck a chord (dance move?) with fans, thanks to an early-90s classic by MC Hammer. Like the Doritos commercial, Cheetos is also continuing to attract more than a few curious eyes—check out the impressive count on AdBlitz!

3. Reeses: “Rock,” 5.45

The third highest-rated snack commercial was Reeses’ spot, “Rock.” A montage of coworkers’ comically accurate answers to one employee’s questions regarding the Reeses Take 5, the spot takes a go at literal comedy and doesn’t fail to deliver. And now, the extended cut on released on YouTube has been climbing up the ranks quickly!

4. Planters: “Tribute,” 5.36

Not so fast, Wesley Snipes! Although a lot of discussion surrounded this spot—and the teaser—the funeral for Mr. Peanut turned out to be a feel-good moment that introduced viewers (and the gathered mourners, such as Kool-Aid Man) to Baby Nut.

It’s done well on AdBlitz, too. The spot is ranked in the top 5 highest-rated sentimental ads this year—and when you see the number of views, it makes sense, too.)

5. Snickers: “#FixTheWorld,” 5.35

Rounding out the top 5 highest-rated snack commercials is Snickers’ “#FixTheWorld.” They have also released an extended cut of the Super Bowl ad—this version, which is picking up steam on YouTube, has a few more topical annoyances added to the (on-the-nose) song that culminates with earth getting fed a giant Snickers.

While it hasn’t reached anything close to the decibels at a Chiefs’ home game, with Super Bowl Sunday less than two weeks away, the commercial buzz is steadily increasing. Since last week’s update, there have been a few significant companies that have either released teasers for their SB spots or provided info about the stars, directors, and even theme.

A few others are getting into the mix ahead of the game, while one car brand is getting viewers in the mood for…safties.

Until the next commercial break, here’s some of the latest.

Snickers is taking a comical approach to help “Fix the World”

The company has released two teasers this week, aiming at a few current cultural dilemmas—such as the selfie stick, adult children living with their parents, and talking on speakerphone in public. The spots, created by BBDO New York and AMV BBDO, are smaller parts to the, ahem, “hole” picture that will be revealed in the full ad.

Pop-Tarts’ first Big Game appearance hints at a…twist

The company released its first teaser this past week, with television personality Jonathan Van Ness at the craft services table looking for something to snack on (other than pretzels!). Phil Schaffer, senior director of marketing for Pop-Tarts, discussed the release:

“When it comes to ‘bringing out your best’, nobody does it better than Jonathan Van Ness – so it was only natural for Pop-Tarts to enlist him to help ‘fix’ the classic pretzel and introduce Pop-Tarts Pretzel,” he said. “Already a loyal brand advocate, Jonathan’s upbeat personality is a natural fit to help Pop-Tarts unveil our latest craveable flavors.”

The spot, created by MRY, will run after the first half’s two-minute warning.

Two points for Volvo

It’s happened nine times in Super Bowl history, and Volvo Car USA is giving fans a reason to cheer for number 10 during Super Bowl LIV. The company is celebrating its incredible safety record (“one million lives saved by Volvo safety innovations, including the three-point safety belt”) by giving away $1 million in cars should a safety occur during the Big Game.

Olay nears launch into space on Super Bowl night

The company unveiled another teaser this past week, this time giving the audience an inside look at the difficulty of space travel—especially when it comes to the food. (You can read more about the #MakeSpaceForWomen campaign here.)

Bucs WR Chris Godwin proudly sports that Snickers bling

Check out Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin sporting an iced-out Snickers chain because, why not?

Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Chris Godwin had a huge performance last week in the team’s 35-22 win over the Atlanta Falcons, catching seven passes for 184 yards and two touchdowns.

Godwin’s big day not only gave him the first 1,000-yard season of his young career, but it also earned him the coveted Snickers chain.

For those wondering what that is, it’s an “iced-out chain created by famed jeweler Ben Baller.” Each week, the chain goes to a player “who has not only shown hunger for more with a huge game or play on the field, but who is also driven to do more off the field.”

Check out Godwin sporting the iced-out chain below.

This is cool and all, but I wish we could’ve seen former NFL running back Marshawn Lynch sporting an iced-out Skittles chain during his career, his favorite candy.
