Former Notre Dame receiver Chris Finke signing with Kansas City Chiefs

The Slippery Fox has a new home.

Chris Finke got to know Ian Book very well during his time at Notre Dame. The former Irish receiver, punt returner and captain furthered his experience with Book and also caught passes from Trevor Lawrence during recent pro days. Now, Finke will show what he’s got in the NFL after signing with the Kansas City Chiefs, per Tom Pelissero of NFL Media. This comes one season after signing with the San Francisco 49ers as an undrafted rookie in 2020 and being part of their practice squad.

Finke, nicknamed “The Slippery Fox”, was a regular for Notre Dame’s receiving corps from 2016 to 2019. In four years of game action, he had 106 receptions for 1,251 yards and eight touchdowns. During the Irish’s 2018 win over USC, he caught seven passes for 86 yards, setting career highs in both categories (though he tied his seven-reception mark in 2019 against Boston College). His loan two-touchdown game came in the Irish’s 2019 victory over Duke.

Report: Chiefs to sign former Notre Dame, 49ers WR Chris Finke

A new report says the Chiefs will sign a former undrafted free agent receiver who spent time with the 49ers in 2020.

The Kansas City Chiefs are inching their way closer to a complete 90-man offseason roster, this time signing a former undrafted free agent wide receiver.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Chiefs plan to sign former Notre Dame and San Francisco 49ers WR Chris Finke. The receiver, nicknamed “The Slippery Fox” recently garnered attention from teams during the NFL’s latest pro-day circuit. Finke caught passes from both Notre Dame QB Ian Book and No. 1 overall draft pick, Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, during their respective pro days.

Finke went undrafted following the 2020 NFL draft and caught on with the San Francisco 49ers. He spent time on and off their practice squad during the course of last season.

Finke finished his Notre Dame career with 1,251 receiving yards and eight touchdown receptions over the course of four seasons. The 5-9 and 186-pound wideout is known as a bit of speedster, posting a 4.5 40-yard dash with a blazing 1.49 10-yard split at the 2020 NFL Scouting Combine. In the NFL, he projects as a slot receiver and a return specialist.

After Finke’s signing, the Chiefs have a whopping 14 receivers on the offseason roster. They need just one more player on the 90-man offseason roster in order to complete it.

Former Notre Dame captain shares DM with Julian Edelman

The time Julian Edelman gave a Notre Dame captain some football advice.

Former New England Patriots star and Super Bowl hero Julian Edelman announced his retirement this week after 12 years in the NFL.

Some want to discuss if Edelman is Pro Football Hall of Fame worthy, (I’m not exactly one of them), but former Notre Dame wide receiver and captain Chris Finke did something else when hearing the news.

The former slot receiver for the Fighting Irish and captain of the 2019 squad that went 11-2 overall instead shared a direct message exchange he had with Edelman a few years back when he was seeking advice in improving his game.

The direct messages:

Edelman played 12 years in the NFL, all with New England where he caught 620 receptions for over 6800 yards and 36 touchdowns.

Finke is currently an NFL free agent after being signed as an undrafted free agent by the San Francisco 49ers following the 2020 NFL draft.

Colts hold tryout for QB Brian Lewerke, 6 others

Colts brought in some players for a workout.

The Indianapolis Colts held a tryout for seven players on Wednesday, including former Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke, per the league’s transaction wire.

The other six who were at the tryout were five wide receivers in Marcell Ateman, Darrius Shepherd, Kendrick Murphy, Chris Finke and Jordan Suell. Former first-round pick Robert Nkemdiche was also included.

Lewerke went undrafted in 2020 but was viewed as an intriguing prospect that could have been taken late in the draft. He wound up signing with the New England Patriots but was waived before the season began.

With the news of Philip Rivers’ retirement, the Colts won’t leave any stone unturned in their search for his replacement. Only Jacob Eason is under contract currently so it should be expected that the Colts will bring in more competition.

The Colts can sign these players to futures contracts if they want. The rosters don’t expand to 90 players until after the Super Bowl so any player with a futures contract will be on the reserve list.

NFL Combine: Claypool, Finke and Kmet’s Bench Press Results

Wednesday saw the wide receivers attack the bench press with two former Notre Dame targets getting their reps in.

Workouts are getting underway at the 2020 NFL Combine in Indianapolis and we’ll keep you as up to date as we possibly can with any results or news that come from Notre Dame prospects in attendance.  Wednesday saw the wide receivers attack the bench press with two former Notre Dame targets getting their reps in.

Chase Claypool, who plenty of conversations have focused on potentially changing positions to tight end, put up an outstanding 19 reps in the bench press (225 pounds).  That will do little to downplay a potential position change for him as it’s a very high number for a receiver.

Chris Finke also participated in the bench press Wednesday, putting up seven reps himself.

Finke and Claypool will both go through the more advanced workouts starting Thursday, as will former Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet who chose not to participate in the bench press at the combine but could during Notre Dame’s pro day that will be held in March.

Notre Dame’s Tony Jones and Chris Finke Participate in Shrine Game

Either Finke or Jones getting drafted remains unlikely for April’s NFL Draft

Tony Jones, Jr. and Chris Finke spent Saturday representing Notre Dame at the 2020 East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Florida.

It wasn’t the showing either were likely looking for as Jones gained just five yards on seven carries for the West squad while Finke was held without a reception.

Neither Finke or Jones getting drafted remains unlikely for April’s NFL Draft, something we discussed when Jones announced he’d be entering a couple weeks ago.

As for the game, Benny LeMay of Charlotte led all rushers with 86 yards and two scores on 15 carries and was named offensive MVP.

James Robinson of Illinois State racked up 80 yards as well, 65 of which came on a fourth quarter touchdown run.

Finally, former Navy quarterback and Notre Dame opponent Malcom Perry got one carry, taking it to the house for a 52 yard touchdown.

Adrian Killins, Jr. of UCF had a game-high 92 receiving yards.

Luther Kirk of Illinois State was named defensive MVP after recording a pair of tackles and an interception.

The East defeated the West 31-27.

No. 16 Notre Dame Blasts Boston College: 5 Instant Thoughts

Hamilton went from a relative-unknown as a recruit as little as 14 or so months ago.  By the time he actually enrolled in school some outlets had him as Notre Dame’s highest ranked recruit in the class and his instant-impact isn’t going unnoticed.

Although the first half was closer than most would like, the final score was a rout as No. 16 Notre Dame improved to 9-2 on the season as they beat up Boston College, 40-7, as four scores, three being field goals in the first half turned into four scores with three being touchdowns instead in the second.

The win completes a second-straight undefeated season at Notre Dame Stadium and gives the Irish a great chance at their third 10-win season in a row, something that hasn’t been done since 1991-93.
