9 Shrine Bowl participants that could become future Patriots

Patriots fans should keep an eye on these players in the 2023 Shrine Bowl.

The East West Shrine Bowl is upon us, and there is some history with the game and the New England Patriots.

In 2022, the Patriots selected Jack Jones, Pierre Strong Jr., and Tyquan Thornton in the NFL draft, while signing D’Eriq King, Brad Hawkins, and LaBryan Ray as undrafted free agents. All six players appeared in the Shrine Bowl that year.

Like most teams, the Patriots usually scout for future players on the practice squad, camp invites, or for future roster maneuvers. So if the Patriots select a player for the game, there’s a good chance they could meet again down the line.

New England will be coaching the West, while the Atlanta Falcons oversee the East. So they’ll get a better sense of how these prospects prepare, practice, and carry themselves. But they’ll also have plenty of chances in-game to see these players up close and personal from both sides.

A true advantage for both the Patriots and Atlanta Falcons is the fact that both NFL teams will get to start having conversations with the prospects, while watching them prepare first-hand.

For the sake of this piece, we wanted to focus on the players the Patriots will see all week, as this is the first time the game is featuring NFL coaching staffs. So the Patriots’ scouting may slightly change.

Here are the players fans should be keeping an eye on.

Notre Dame’s Tony Jones and Chris Finke Participate in Shrine Game

Either Finke or Jones getting drafted remains unlikely for April’s NFL Draft

Tony Jones, Jr. and Chris Finke spent Saturday representing Notre Dame at the 2020 East-West Shrine Game in St. Petersburg, Florida.

It wasn’t the showing either were likely looking for as Jones gained just five yards on seven carries for the West squad while Finke was held without a reception.

Neither Finke or Jones getting drafted remains unlikely for April’s NFL Draft, something we discussed when Jones announced he’d be entering a couple weeks ago.

As for the game, Benny LeMay of Charlotte led all rushers with 86 yards and two scores on 15 carries and was named offensive MVP.

James Robinson of Illinois State racked up 80 yards as well, 65 of which came on a fourth quarter touchdown run.

Finally, former Navy quarterback and Notre Dame opponent Malcom Perry got one carry, taking it to the house for a 52 yard touchdown.

Adrian Killins, Jr. of UCF had a game-high 92 receiving yards.

Luther Kirk of Illinois State was named defensive MVP after recording a pair of tackles and an interception.

The East defeated the West 31-27.
