WATCH: Saints draft pick Khristian Boyd puts up 38 bench press reps

WATCH: New Orleans Saints draft pick Khristian Boyd puts up 38 bench press reps at Northern Iowa pro day

The New Orleans Saints have had some great picks during the 2024 NFL draft cycle, and defensive lineman Khristian Boyd is no exception. He is a high-level run blocker that they met with earlier in the offseason process for an official 30 visit. With many other teams being involved, the Saints were able to snag Boyd at No. 199 in the sixth round.

One of Boyd’s biggest positive traits is his strength, which is immediately apparent whenever you watch him play. But it is also apparent when you watch his bench press video from the UNI pro day, where he put up 38 reps of 225 and set a school record in the event. See for yourself:

Comparing this against the NFL Scouting Combine’s historical top performers, he would be tied for 18th-most bench press reps with four other players:

  • Andrew Vorhees – 2023 – OG
  • Margus Hunt – 2013 – DE
  • Marvin Austin – 2011 – DL
  • Russell Okung – 2010 – OL

While Andrew Vorhees missed his rookie season with a torn ACL, and Marvin Austin had a relatively short career in the NFL, Russell Okung was a two-time Pro Bowler as well as a long-time quality starter, and Margus Hunt stuck in the NFL for nine seasons, playing with the Saints for four games back in 2020 as well. Boyd’s career is off to a strong start, too.

The 3 cone drill, shuttle run and other NFL combine drills explained

You’ve probably heard of the 40-yard dash and bench press, but what about those other drills?

For some, the first thing that comes to mind when they think about the NFL scouting combine is the 40-yard dash.

The combine isn’t necessarily a moment on the sports calendar the average fan is clamoring to follow — some would even prefer if fans didn’t watch at all. But people like Rich Eisen have always created fun moments around it, and the 40 has often been a drill used to do that.

From Eisen’s annual 40-yard dash in support of St. Jude’s Hospital to wide receiver John Ross nearly claiming ownership of an island for his record-breaking performance in the drill, the 40 almost always overshadows everything else.

So, though the other drills are considered equally important tools for team scouts and evaluators to gain valuable information on the prospects they want to consider drafting, not a lot of fans know what those drills are or how to do them.

Below we take a look at each and every measurable event at the NFL scouting combine and what they test, including the 40-yard dash, just in case you ignore that, too.

WATCH: Broncos OL Netane Muti bench-pressed 44 reps at combine

Broncos new guard Netane Muti is crazy strong!

Denver Broncos sixth-round draft pick Netane Muti put on an impressive performance at the NFL combine earlier this season, bench-pressing 225 pounds 44 times, which marked the most reps since 2012.

Check it out:

Muti (6-3, 315 pounds) has injury concerns but he could turn out to be a steal if he’s able to stay healthy in the NFL. This offseason, Muti will likely compete with Elijah Wilkinson, Nico Falah and Austin Schlottmann for one of the team’s backup guard spots.

Dalton Risner, a second-round pick last year, and Graham Glasglow, who signed with Denver during free agency, will be the starting guards.

Pundits on Twitter praised the Broncos for landing Muti in the sixth round. Though he has injury concerns, the strong offensive lineman has huge upside — if he can stay on the field. If Muti doesn’t work out, Denver will have only given up a late-round draft pick to take a chance on him.

NFL Combine: Claypool, Finke and Kmet’s Bench Press Results

Wednesday saw the wide receivers attack the bench press with two former Notre Dame targets getting their reps in.

Workouts are getting underway at the 2020 NFL Combine in Indianapolis and we’ll keep you as up to date as we possibly can with any results or news that come from Notre Dame prospects in attendance.  Wednesday saw the wide receivers attack the bench press with two former Notre Dame targets getting their reps in.

Chase Claypool, who plenty of conversations have focused on potentially changing positions to tight end, put up an outstanding 19 reps in the bench press (225 pounds).  That will do little to downplay a potential position change for him as it’s a very high number for a receiver.

Chris Finke also participated in the bench press Wednesday, putting up seven reps himself.

Finke and Claypool will both go through the more advanced workouts starting Thursday, as will former Notre Dame tight end Cole Kmet who chose not to participate in the bench press at the combine but could during Notre Dame’s pro day that will be held in March.
