Bills sign CB Herb Miller to practice squad

#Bills sign CB Herb Miller to practice squad:

Following the injury update to cornerback Tre’Davious White, the Buffalo Bills have announced a relating transaction.

White’s season came to an end in Week 4. The defender tore his Achilles.

Days later, the team announced that cornerback Herb Miller was signed to the practice squad. In a corresponding move, receiver Marcell Ateman was released from the practice squad.

Miller, 25, spent the 2023 offseason with the Carolina Panthers. He originally entered the NFL with the Kansas City Chiefs after going undrafted out of Florida Atlantic in 2019. He spent 2020 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the year they won the Super Bowl.

The 2021 and 2022 seasons saw Miller with the Cleveland Browns.

Mostly a special teamer and depth player, Miller has appeared in 17 games in his career. He has notched one interception.

Miller will add to Buffalo’s depth at defensive back but he is not expected to see immediate game time.

Ateman signed with the Bills this offseason and spent training camp with the team before signing to the practice squad.

Bills sign former XFL WR Marcell Ateman to one-year deal

#Bills sign former XFL WR Marcell Ateman to one-year deal:

The Buffalo Bills have a new wide receiver… but again, it’s not the name many would have hoped for.

The team announced on Thursday that wide receiver Marcell Ateman signed a one-year deal. In a corresponding move, wideout Braydon Johnson was released.

Ateman, 28, stands 6-foot-4 in height and was a seventh-round selection of the Las Vegas Raiders in 2018. However, Ateman was more coveted in his recent league: The XFL.

At the 2023 XFL draft, Ateman was the second-overall pick by the St. Louis Battlehawks.

Naturally, most in Buffalo would have hoped to see the latest wideout added by the Bills to be DeAndre Hopkins. For now, Hopkins remains a free agent.

In the XFL, hamstring injuries hampered Ateman, holding him to seven games played. In that time, he recorded 19 catches for 259 yards.

During his NFL career, Ateman bounced back and forth from active rosters to practice squads. Along with playing for the Raiders, the Arizona Cardinals signed Ateman in 2022.

In 19 games played in the NFL, Ateman has 20 catches for 270 yards and a touchdown.

What might hamper Ateman in Buffalo is his lack of special teams experience as depth receivers often contribute there in Buffalo. He has only played in 24 totals special teams snaps in the NFL.

Cardinals sign WR Marcell Ateman in wake of Antoine Wesley injury

Ateman is a former seventh-round pick of the Raiders.

The Arizona Cardinals added receiver depth on Thursday as Antoine Wesley is set to miss some time in training camp with a hip/groin injury. They announced the signing of former Las Vegas wide receiver Marcell Ateman.

Ateman spent all or part of the last four seasons with the Raiders after being drafted by them in the seventh round in 2018 out of Oklahoma State.

The 6-4, 215-lb wideout had 20 catches for 270 yards and a touchdown in 2018-2019. He spent part of 2020 on the Raiders’ practice squad and appeared in one game last season and spent time on the practice squad as well.

Wesley is expected to be out at least a week so the team needed more depth at receiver.

To make room for Ateman, the Cardinals released tackle Eric Smith.

Marcell Ateman sighting: Former Raiders receiver signs with Cardinals

Former Raiders WR Marcell Ateman resurfaces with Cardinals

Considering his status as a seventh-round pick, Marcell Ateman hanging around with the team that drafted him for four years is no small accomplishment.

The 6-4, 215-pounder saw his time with the Raiders come to an end late last season when he was released from the practice squad. He had yet to resurface with another team since then.

That is, until today.

After spending his first offseason without a team to call home, Ateman was signed today by the Arizona Cardinals as the team just started their training camp.

Ateman will have nearly a full training camp to try and once again earn a spot on an NFL roster or practice squad for what would be his fifth NFL season.

The former Oklahoma receiver has appeared in 19 games in four years, with six starts, all for the Raiders during his rookie season in 2018 in which the Raiders receiving corps was riddled with injuries.

Raiders make three more moves to get down to 80-player limit

Raiders make three more moves to get down to 80-player limit

On Monday, the Raiders made several moves to get down to 83 players. The deadline is today and the team still needed to make three moves to get there. Those moves are now official.

They waived WR Marcell Ateman, waived/injured DT Darius Stills, and placed LB Darron Lee on injured reserve.

Ateman is a former seventh round pick by the Raiders. He has appeared in 18 games with six starters since he was drafted in 2018. He spent part of last season on the team’s practice squad. He is fresh off a couple nice catches against the Rams in last Saturday’s preseason game, including a 29-yard touchdown.

Stills is an undrafted rookie. He was showing potential until he broke his hand. He returned last week with a club cast and played in last week’s preseason game with it. Should he clear waivers, he can be placed on injured reserve. Then, should the Raiders choose, they can cut him with an injury settlement and bring him back once his hand is healed, perhaps on the practice squad.

Lee is a former first-round pick (20 overall) by the Jets. He spent three seasons in New York and has bounced around since then, staring just two games since 2018.

Colts hold tryout for QB Brian Lewerke, 6 others

Colts brought in some players for a workout.

The Indianapolis Colts held a tryout for seven players on Wednesday, including former Michigan State quarterback Brian Lewerke, per the league’s transaction wire.

The other six who were at the tryout were five wide receivers in Marcell Ateman, Darrius Shepherd, Kendrick Murphy, Chris Finke and Jordan Suell. Former first-round pick Robert Nkemdiche was also included.

Lewerke went undrafted in 2020 but was viewed as an intriguing prospect that could have been taken late in the draft. He wound up signing with the New England Patriots but was waived before the season began.

With the news of Philip Rivers’ retirement, the Colts won’t leave any stone unturned in their search for his replacement. Only Jacob Eason is under contract currently so it should be expected that the Colts will bring in more competition.

The Colts can sign these players to futures contracts if they want. The rosters don’t expand to 90 players until after the Super Bowl so any player with a futures contract will be on the reserve list.
