Chris Daukaus out of UFC 289 due to injury

The UFC’s long-awaited return to Canada has taken another hit.

The UFC’s long-awaited return to Canada has taken another hit.

[autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] is off UFC 289, as he’s withdrawn from his light heavyweight debut vs. [autotag]Khalil Rountree[/autotag] due to injury. The event takes place June 10 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia.

A person with knowledge of the withdrawal recently informed MMA Junkie but asked to remain anonymous as the promotion has yet to make an official announcement.

Daukaus (12-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) was enthused to make his debut at 205 pounds, a move he hinted at prior to his final fight at heavyweight. He would’ve entered UFC 289 looking to snap a three-fight skid.

It is unclear if Rountree (11-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) will remain on the card, but if he does, he’ll seek his fourth straight victory after consecutive wins over Modestas Bukauskas, Karl Roberson, and Dustin Jacoby.

With the change, the UFC 289 lineup includes:

  • Amanda Nunes vs. Irene Alanda – for women’s bantamweight title
  • Beneil Dariush vs. Charles Oliveira
  • Adam Fugitt vs. Mike Malott
  • Dan Ige vs. Nate Landwehr
  • Eryk Anders vs. Marc-Andre Barriault
  • Chris Curtis vs. Nassourdine Imavov
  • Khalil Rountree vs. TBA
  • Jasmine Jasudavicius vs. Miranda Maverick
  • David Dvorak vs. Stephen Erceg
  • Blake Bilder vs. Kyle Nelson
  • Aiemann Zahabi vs. Aori Qileng

[autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] will seek new life at 205 pounds.

After spending his entire professional MMA career as a heavyweight, Daukaus (12-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) makes his light heavyweight debut against [autotag]Khalil Rountree[/autotag] (11-5 MMA, 7-5 UFC) at UFC 289 on June 10 at Rogers Arena in Vancouver, per promotion officials.

Rountree, 33, is enjoying arguably his best octagon run. The “Ultimate Fighter 23” finalist has won his past three in a row – scoring back-to-back Round 2 TKO’s of Modestas Bukauskas and Karl Roberson, followed by a split decision over Dustin Jacoby this past October.

The pair fought to a split draw in the vacant title headliner, which is a rarity in UFC history.

UFC 282 video: Jairzinho Rozenstruik swarms Chris Daukaus for 23-second knockout win

Jairzinho Rozenstruik needed just 23 seconds to put away Chris Daukaus in devastating fashion at UFC 282.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jairzinho Rozenstruik[/autotag] promised to start fast at UFC 282, and he did just that by putting away [autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] in a mere 23 seconds.

Rozenstruik (13-4 MMA, 7-4 UFC) handed Daukaus (12-6 MMA, 4-3 UFC) his third consecutive defeat on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena when he came rushing out of the gate with a flurry of punches and jumping knees, forcing his opponent to stumble around the cage until it was over.

Daukaus did his best to survive the storm, but he couldn’t defend himself from the power of Rozenstruik, who capped off his attack with a vicious left hand.

Check out the replay of the finish below (via Twitter):

It was an important fight for Rozenstruik, who also came in with back-to-back losses and needed to get his hand raised. He did just that and told Joe Rogan in their post-fight interview that there’s more to come.

UFC 282: Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Chris Daukaus odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s UFC 282 odds and lines between Jairzinho Rozenstruik vs. Chris Daukaus, with MMA picks, tips and predictions.

In a heavyweight bout in the prelims, Jairzinho Rozenstruik and Chris Daukaus meet Saturday at UFC 282 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Let’s analyze Tipico Sportsbook‘s lines around the UFC 282: Rozenstruik vs. Daukaus odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The early prelims begin at 6:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+, with the prelims set to begin at 8 p.m. ET on ESPN2/ESPN+ and the main card starting at 10 p.m. ET on Pay-Per-View (PPV).

Rozenstruik takes the walk to the octagon on a 2-bout losing streak. He was knocked out by Alexander Volkov last time out in a fight night main event in early June, following up a unanimous-decision loss to Curtis Blaydes at UFC 266 in Sept. 2021.

Since arriving at the UFC level, Rozenstruik has had just 2 fights go the distance — both losses — and he is 1-3 across his last 4 bouts overall.

Daukaus is looking to add to the woes of the Suriname fighter, but he has issues of his own, dropping the past 2 bouts by KO/TKO. He was dropped just 17 seconds into the 2nd round by Blaydes in a fight night main event in late March and was dropped by Derrick Lewis last December in the 1st round.

UFC 282: Rozenstruik vs. Daukaus picks and predictions

Records: Rozenstruik (12-4-0) | Daukaus (12-5-0)

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

ROZENSTRUIK (-170) is just a few fights removed from a narrow loss to Ciryl Gane in the main event in late Feb. 2021. He was on pace for a potential title shot, knocking out some big names, including Alistair Overeem and Andrei Arlovski.

He hit a speed bump recently and needs to bounce back from the Volkov loss. He gets it done here, as Daukaus has been equally unimpressive and his defense has been terrible lately.

Rozenstruik holds a 2-inch reach advantage over Daukaus, although the latter has an impressive 6.47-to-2.80 significant strikes landed per minute advantage. Still, look for the bigger Rozenstruik to hold his own, and perhaps use the reach advantage to hold Daukaus at a distance, picking and choosing his spots for the big blow.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 1.5 ROUNDS (+120) at plus money is a good play here. Daukaus is a punching machine, who will fire out and look to take it to Rozenstruik. The latter is a little more calculating and tends to try and his opponent in the clinch, slowing things down.

I don’t think this fight goes the distance, but we should at least see the second half of the 2nd round.

Jairzinho Rozenstruik excited to ‘put down a crazy performance’ against Chris Daukaus at UFC 282

Jairzinho Rozenstruik is looking to rebound in emphatic fashion at UFC 282.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Jairzinho Rozenstruik[/autotag] is looking to rebound in emphatic fashion at UFC 282.

Rozenstruik (12-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) meets [autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] (12-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) in Saturday’s event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN2 and early prelims on ESPN+.

It’s been a frustrating year for the heavyweight contender, who only fought once in 2022 and saw three fights scrapped.

“It was difficult, but it is what it is,” Rozenstruik told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference. “Life goes on and so does my career. I’m here again so I’m happy that it’s fight week. Saturday, I definitely want to put down a crazy performance.”

Rozenstruik, who started off his UFC career with four knockouts – including a comeback finish of Alistair Overeem, has since lost four of his past six and two in a row.

But the 34-year-old isn’t feeling any added pressure to snap his losing skid.

“I always think like that, I want to win and give everything that I have,” Rozenstruik said. “Especially in my camp then fight night, you want to do everything you especially trained for so it’s always important.”

Chris Daukaus admits light heavyweight is possible, but staying put for now: ‘That’s been floating around in my head’

On the lighter side of the heavyweight division, Chris Daukaus discusses whether or not a drop would do him well.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Chris Daukaus[/autotag] is on the lighter side of the heaviest division.

At UFC 282, Daukaus (12-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC) looks to snap a two-fight losing skid when he faces Jairzinho Rozenstruik (12-4 MMA, 6-4 UFC) in a heavyweight bout. While his plan is to win this fight and continue his ascent up the heavyweight ladder, Daukaus admitted he thinks he probably can make light heavyweight.

“If you talk to my brother, I can make 205,” Daukaus told MMA Junkie and other reporters at a pre-fight news conference. “But yeah, I’ve been speaking with nutritionists. My brother uses John Poppie here in Vegas. He told me obviously it’s going to have to be a lifestyle change. Certain things will be changed. But if you guys remember when I fought in Abu Dhabi, I weighed 225. He said, ‘If you come in on fight week 225, you can make 205 no problem.

“So that is an idea that’s been floating around in my head, but we’ll see where things go. Is it always good to change weight classes? No. You have to take into account that the 205 guys are probably a little bit more technical than the heavyweight guys. They probably don’t hit as hard, certain people. So we’ll see. We’ll see where this goes. As of now, I’m staying at heavyweight. I don’t have any plans to go to 205. Unless something drastically changes in my life or career, we’re staying here.”

UFC 282 takes place Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN2 and early prelims on ESPN+.
