6 takeaways from the Bears’ blowout loss to the Cowboys

From Justin Fields’ ascendance to Roquan Smith’s rollercoaster season, here are our takeaways from the Bears’ 49-29 loss to the Cowboys.

For the second year in a row, the Chicago Bears got their doors blown off on Halloween weekend. But also for the second year in a row on Halloween weekend, quarterback Justin Fields looked like a star. Nestled in that loss was an offense that continued to take strides, particularly at the quarterback position.

The Bears fell to the Dallas Cowboys 49-29 in a game where their defense allowed six touchdowns. It was the most points they allowed since the Green Bay Packers dropped 55 on them during the infamous 2014 season. But in this defeat, the positives seem to outweigh the negatives.

The offense continues to develop and is becoming a problem for opposing defenses and Fields looks the part of a budding franchise quarterback. Work is still in progress, but the positive signs are there. At the very least, you can feel a lot worse about a 49-29 loss on the road. Here are our takeaways from Sunday’s defeat.

Bears Twitter feels good about Justin Fields despite loss vs. Cowboys

The Bears may have lost 49-29 to the Dallas Cowboys, but fans are thrilled with the progression Justin Fields has shown.

It was a wild day down in Texas for the Chicago Bears where for once, the offense showed up and the defense let the team down. The Bears lost to the Dallas Cowboys 49-29, giving up six defensive touchdowns, but there were bright spots that have fans feeling optimistic about the future. The biggest one is easily the play and development of quarterback Justin Fields.

After a rough start to his season, Fields has progressed well over the last few weeks. He completed 17-of-23 passes for 151 yards and two touchdowns. He also did a ton of damage on the ground once again, rushing eight times for 60 yards and a touchdown. Fields also had the highest quarterback rating of his career with 120.0.

He cleaned up some of his mistakes that plagued him, such as more accurate passes to the outside and protecting the football better. Those improvements, combined with his special athleticism that allows him to make something out of nothing, is helping advance his development right in front of everyone’s eyes.

While the rest of the quarterbacks from 2021 NFL Draft struggled on Sunday, Fields showed he has taken significant steps and is on his way towards becoming a true franchise quarterback. It was a bright spot in a tough loss and Bears fans are choosing to look at the positives instead of the negatives, believing Fields is the answer to the team’s quarterback woes.

WATCH: Khalil Herbert scores his 5th touchdown of year vs. Dallas

Khalil Herbert’s rushing touchdown got the Bears within five points in the third quarter.

Things looked bleak for the Chicago Bears midway through the second quarter when they were down 28-7 against the Dallas Cowboys. Slowly but surely, however, they clawed their way back and got within one score thanks to a touchdown from running back Khalil Herbert. It almost never happened, though.

On the first play of the drive, Herbert appeared to fumble the ball and Dallas recovered. But upon further review, his knee was down by contact and the drive continued for the Bears. From there, they didn’t look back. Quarterback Justin Fields found wide receiver Darnell Mooney for a 36-yard gain to move the ball inside Cowboys territory. From there, Herbert did the rest. On the fifth play of the drive, Herbert found a hole and took advantage, scoring a 12-yard touchdown to pull the Bears within five points after trailing by as much as 21. It was Herbert’s fifth total score of the season.

The Bears tried to pull within three points with a two-point conversion attempt, but failed when Fields was sacked. The offense will need to continue the heavy lifting, however, as the Cowboys responded with their own scoring drive and had a defensive score to make it 42-23 midway through the third quarter.

WATCH: Justin Fields sprints for a TD to get the Bears on the board

Justin Fields used his running ability to gash the Dallas Cowboys defense to put the Bears on the board.

The Chicago Bears were staring into a 14-0 hole against the Dallas Cowboys after falling behind early. But Justin Fields took matters into his own hands to stop the bleeding.

On the Bears’ second drive of the game after Dallas went up by two scores, Fields and the offense manufactured a drive that spanned 12 plays and went for 75 yards. 32 of those yards were thanks to Fields and his running ability as he had two big gains before dashing into the end zone for the three-yard touchdown.

It wasn’t just Fields though. Rookie wide receiver Velus Jones Jr. got things started with a jet sweep that went for 18 yards early in the drive, his longest play on offense to start his career. It was a nice response for the Bears but it could be all for not. The Cowboys continue to jump all over the defense and lead 28-7 close to the end of the second quarter.

5 bold predictions for Bears vs. Cowboys

A big rushing day for Justin Fields and Trevis Gipson’s re-emergence headline this week’s bold predictions for Bears vs. Cowboys.

The Chicago Bears get back to work this weekend on a short week following their dominant 33-14 victory over the New England Patriots. They’re back on the road, this time heading down to Texas to take on the Dallas Cowboys and hopefully start a winning streak for the first time this season.

It’s a homecoming of sorts for head coach Matt Eberflus, who will make his first trip back to Dallas as a coach since he was a part of the Cowboys staff. Eberflus spent seven years as the Cowboys linebackers coach from 2011 to 2017 before he became the defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts.

The Bears will need to avoid Dallas’ star defenders to have a chance, but with a sound gameplan like they had in New England, a win is possible. This game is going to be decided on the ground, however. Here are five bold predictions ahead of this matchup.

2 Bears games among the most in demand this NFL season

The Chicago Bears may not be a popular pick to be a good team but they’re still a hot ticket this season.

The national sentiment may not be very favorable for the Chicago Bears heading into the 2022 season, seeing as various analysts and pundits have made them a popular pick to be one of the worst teams in the league. Even with those expectations, however, the Bears appear to be a hot ticket in 2022.

Darren Rovell of The Action Network posted the most in-demand games from the upcoming NFL season using data from StubHub and the Bears are featured in two of them. Their road matchups against the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys are No. 6 and No. 7 on the list, respectively.

The Bears renew their rivalry with Green Bay early in the regular season, making the trip north in week two for Sunday Night Football, while they head down to Dallas in late October in week eight for a reunion with the Cowboys. It will be their first road game against the Cowboys since 2016.

If you’re looking for tickets for one of those games, you will likely need to pay a pretty penny. According to StubHub, the lowest ticket price for Bears vs. Packers is $219 as of this article. For Bears vs. Cowboys, tickets are significantly cheaper with standing room-only tickets as low as $41, but get more expensive for actual seats.

Regardless of the ticket price, fans are marking down these Bears games on their calendar and there should be plenty of road fans in both stadiums. The most in-demand NFL game of the year takes place in week one when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Cowboys in primetime.

Ranking the top 20 Bears games of the decade

On the eve of a new decade, we’re counting down the Bears’ best games of this past decade — including some real blasts from the past.

Between January 1, 2010 and December 31, 2019, the Chicago Bears played 164 games, including three playoff games, compiling a record of 78-86. Surprising playoff runs in 2010 and 2018 were sandwiched around lengthy stretches of mediocrity from 2013-2017, and fans were treated to a below-average product for much of the decade.

Still, there were quite a few bright spots for the NFL’s charter franchise during the last 10 years, including memorable games that provided thrilling victories. As a disappointing 2019 season concludes, let’s look back on some of the better games and moments the ’10s had to offer.

To kick off the next decade as we enter 2020, here are my top 20 Bears games from the 2010s.

20. 2019, Week 14, Cowboys at Bears

Bears 31 – Cowboys 24: Easily the best game of an otherwise disappointing season, the Bears offense came alive in primetime against the Cowboys, with quarterback Mitchell Trubisky accounting for all four touchdowns with his arm and legs in arguably his best game as a Bear. On defense, despite not creating a turnover, the unit frustrated the Cowboys offense all evening with QB pressures and excellent play from their secondary. The matchup was a pseudo-playoff game, with the Bears keeping their hopes alive for one more week in a complete-team win.

19. 2018, Week 8, Bears at Bills

Bears 41 – Bills 9: While the Buffalo Bills weren’t a powerhouse in 2018, the Bears defense still made their offense look completely inept in a blowout. Forcing four turnovers, including three interceptions from quarterback Nathan Peterman, the Bears scored twice on defense thanks to outside linebacker Leonard Floyd’s pick six and safety Eddie Jackson’s fumble recovery, and limited the Bills’ offense to just 264 yards. The reason this game isn’t higher on the list is due to the Bears offensive performance, as they gained just 190 yards.

18. 2011, Week 1, Falcons at Bears

Bears 30 – Falcons 12: No, this wasn’t the Bears-Falcons matchup that saw the debut of quarterback Mike Glennon, this was the first game following the Bears heartbreaking loss to the Packers in the NFC Championship game. Led by quarterback Jay Cutler, who threw for over 300 yards and two touchdowns, the Bears won convincingly against the reigning NFC South champions and held the Falcon offense to just six points. This game also featured an impressive performance from Hall of Fame linebacker Brian Urlacher, who had an interception and a fumble recovery for a score. The defense had a total of three takeaways and started the 2011 season with a bang.

Bears receive no help on Sunday when it comes to playoff push

As the Bears look to make a push for a Wild Card spot, they didn’t get any help on Sunday as the Vikings and Rams both won.

The Chicago Bears kept their slim playoff hopes alive on Thursday when they defeated the Dallas Cowboys 31-24 and improved to 7-6 on the season. Their playoff odds stood at 5% following the win, but that percentage won’t improve following Sunday’s game results, however.

Trailing the sixth seeded Minnesota Vikings by two games and the Los Angeles Rams, the first team out, by one heading into Sunday’s games, the Bears needed a loss by either team to gain ground in the race for the final wildcard spot. Unfortunately, both teams beat their respective opponents to keep the Bears at bay and lowering their chances of making the postseason to 3%, according to fivethirtyeight.com.

The Vikings took care of business at home against the Detroit Lions, winning 20-7 to improve to 9-4, while the Rams are suddenly surging, winning their second-straight divisional game as they grounded the Seattle Seahawks 28-12 and remain a game ahead of the Bears statistically at 8-5, although Los Angeles holds the tiebreaker after defeating the Bears last month.

To make matters worse, the NFC North-leading Green Bay Packers were also victorious, beating the Washington Redskins 30-15. The win keeps them atop the division and all but eliminates the Bears from repeating as division champions.

The Bears are still “in the hunt” with three games to go, but the window is closing. Assuming they win their final games against the Packers, the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Vikings to finish 10-6 (a feat unlikely in itself), the Bears will need the Rams and Vikings to lose two out of their final three games to secure the final wildcard spot. Below are the remaining schedules for each team.

Los Angeles Rams Remaining Schedule:

  • @ Dallas Cowboys (Week 15)
  • @ San Francisco 49ers (Week 16)
  • Vs. Arizona Cardinals (Week 17)

Minnesota Vikings Remaining Schedule:

  • @ Los Angeles Chargers (Week 15)
  • Vs. Green Bay Packers (Week 16)
  • Vs. Chicago Bears (Week 17)

At this point, the Bears can only control what they can control by winning their final three games and putting themselves in the best position possible to make the playoffs. There’s still hope the pieces can fall into place, but this weekend’s results severely put a damper on the excitement following their win on Thursday.

WATCH: Bears WR Javon Wims messes with cab driver, sheds light on injury

WR Javon Wims is in good spirits following a knee injury he suffered against the Cowboys on Thursday, which is good news for the Bears.

When Bears second-year receiver Javon Wims went down with a knee injury in the team’s win against the Cowboys on Thursday evening, many feared for the worst as he was down for several minutes before gingerly walking off the field. Wims, however, seems to be in very good spirits and doesn’t seem too concerned about the injury based on his Instagram story.

Wims posted a six minute video to his Instagram story on Saturday, talking with a ride share driver about the Bears, while pretending he was just a fan of the team. The two discussed quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, the receiving corps, fan burner accounts on social media and more during the drive.

When Wims, still pretending to be a fan, began talking about himself, the driver wondered how his injury looked after seeing him go down on Thursday. Wims decided to “speculate” on the situation.

“He’s not too bad, I think he’ll be alright,” Wims said. “It looked like he was OK.” Wims also hyped himself up, saying “that kid has a bright future, he has all the intangibles” while smiling.

When the driver finally discovers who he is, they both share a laugh. The driver then asks how he’s doing regarding his knee injury. “Yeah, I’m good,” Wims says with a laugh. The driver then asks if he walked to the car alright, to which Wims replied, “Yeah, I just got back. Everything is positive.”

[wpvideo Q35wtu9g]

The video focused primarily on the former Georgia Bulldog messing with the driver about who he was and offering priceless descriptions of his teammates, but the reveal regarding his knee injury is good news.

This comes a day after NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Wims had a slight knee sprain and that it wasn’t major. The sprain occurred late in the first half when Trubisky attempted to find Wims in the endzone, but the receiver couldn’t make the catch and fell awkwardly with Cowboys linebacker Jaylon Smith.

With Wims himself saying he’s good and that he walked to the car fine, it’s another positive sign for the receiver’s recovery. However, it’s still too early to tell if Wims will miss any games.
