A moribund Raiders team is, shockingly, the hottest ticket in the NFL

What happens in Vegas costs a ton on StubHub.

The Las Vegas Raiders went 6-11 last season. They swapped out longtime starting quarterback Derek Carr with Jimmy Garoppolo, a player the 49ers benched in 2022 in favor of a guy who eventually slipped to third place on their depth chart (Trey Lance, subsequently traded to the Cowboys for a fourth round pick). Garoppolo is still working through a foot injury and he’ll be playing against the backdrop of a defense that ranked 28th out of 32 teams when it came to yards allowed last fall.

And despite all this, no team is hotter on StubHub’s secondary ticket market than the Raiders.

Data released Friday from the online marketplace further validated the NFL and team owner Mark Davis’s decision to move a team to Sin City. Despite a thoroughly underwhelming 2022, Las Vegas is selling tickets at a tremendous rate.

A Week 3 tilt against the Pittsburgh Steelers, which doubles as Vegas’s home opener, is currently the most in demand seat on StubHub. The Green Bay Packers’ Monday night visit in Week 5 ranks fourth when it comes to the most popular — and revenue-generating — games on the site.

The Raiders drew a perfect storm of opponents outside the AFC West this fall. They’ll bring in two of the game’s most popular old school teams when Pittsburgh and Green Bay come to town. They’ll also pull from major markets thanks to road trips from the New York Giants, New York Jets and New England Patriots (whose last trip to Vegas ended in the most hilarious way possible). Factor in division rivalry games against prospective playoff teams like the Los Angeles Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs and it’s a very good year to be a Las Vegas season ticket holder.

StubHub’s report compiled a list of data points suggesting new trends for 2023. Some we expected; others are a bit more surprising. Let’s look at the non-Raiders developments from a shallow dive into this season’s ticket resale information.

How expensive are Commanders’ tickets in the NFL resale market?

The average resale price of Commanders tickets are 11th cheapest in 2023.

It’s no secret that FedEx Field isn’t exactly a home-field advantage for the Washington Commanders. Things are so bad that star players have purchased tickets and given them away on social media to encourage Washington fans to support the team.

Don’t blame the fans. Don’t blame the players. We know everything wrong with FedEx Field and all the issues surrounding outgoing owner Daniel Snyder. Washington’s home decline over the past 15 years is startling.

However, there is hope on the way. The NFL will vote on Snyder’s sale to Josh Harris at a special league meeting on July 20. Shortly thereafter, Harris and his group will take over the day-to-day operations of the Commanders.

Players are excited, believing a change is good. Running back Antonio Gibson recently hinted on social media that he hoped Washington fans packed FedEx Field in 2023.

One problem is opposing fans have often outnumbered Washington fans in recent years. Another issue is the NFL resale market. Could that change in 2023 with the excitement surrounding new ownership?

According to TicketSmarter, the average resale price of Commanders tickets is $280, up from $182 in 2022. While that seems like a pretty steep increase, Washington’s tickets were the 11th cheapest on the NFL resale market.

Will Washington fans return to FedEx Field to support the Commanders in 2023? There is a new energy around the team that new ownership hopes follow them into the season.

2 Bears games among the most in demand this NFL season

The Chicago Bears may not be a popular pick to be a good team but they’re still a hot ticket this season.

The national sentiment may not be very favorable for the Chicago Bears heading into the 2022 season, seeing as various analysts and pundits have made them a popular pick to be one of the worst teams in the league. Even with those expectations, however, the Bears appear to be a hot ticket in 2022.

Darren Rovell of The Action Network posted the most in-demand games from the upcoming NFL season using data from StubHub and the Bears are featured in two of them. Their road matchups against the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys are No. 6 and No. 7 on the list, respectively.

The Bears renew their rivalry with Green Bay early in the regular season, making the trip north in week two for Sunday Night Football, while they head down to Dallas in late October in week eight for a reunion with the Cowboys. It will be their first road game against the Cowboys since 2016.

If you’re looking for tickets for one of those games, you will likely need to pay a pretty penny. According to StubHub, the lowest ticket price for Bears vs. Packers is $219 as of this article. For Bears vs. Cowboys, tickets are significantly cheaper with standing room-only tickets as low as $41, but get more expensive for actual seats.

Regardless of the ticket price, fans are marking down these Bears games on their calendar and there should be plenty of road fans in both stadiums. The most in-demand NFL game of the year takes place in week one when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers visit the Cowboys in primetime.

The Lions finished last in the NFL in ticket revenue for 2021

The Detroit Lions finished last in the NFL in ticket revenue for 2021 in data compiled by Sportico

Detroit’s rough 2021 season on the field was reflected in the revenue the Lions generated from tickets sold.

The latest reported gate revenue compiled by Sportico shows the Lions in dead last in the NFL. Detroit generated just $51 million in gate receipts in the 2021 season, a year where the Lions finished 3-13-1 after opening the season 0-10-1.

Reporter Kurt Badenhausen noted on Twitter that price differences in tickets are the primary driver. As an example, the Raiders finished 25th in total tickets sold but generated the most ticket revenue due to the high prices at their new Allegiant Field in Las Vegas. AFC teams also had an extra home date on the 17-game schedule.

The Lions remain one of the NFL’s cheapest tickets. Fans can attend home games at Ford Field for an average ticket of $91.89, and ownership did not increase the price on season tickets for the 2022 season.

Rams have 4th-most expensive tickets on secondary market

The average price of a Rams home game is fourth-highest in the NFL, showing how in-demand those tickets are

After winning Super Bowl LVI, a lot of fans want to watch the Los Angeles Rams play in 2022 – and understandably so. They’re an exciting team led by Matthew Stafford, Aaron Donald, Cooper Kupp and Jalen Ramsey.

Add in the fact that they play some of the best teams in the NFL, and you can understand why Rams tickets are as expensive as they are. According to Logitix, the average price of a ticket to a Rams home game at SoFi Stadium in 2022 is $359.

That’s tied for the fourth-most expensive ticket in the league, behind only the Raiders ($595), Dolphins ($387) and Chargers ($361). The Chiefs are fifth with an average price of $354 for a home game.

When it comes to individual games, Rams-Raiders is the sixth-most expensive ticket of any matchup, with an average price of $399. That game will be late in the year on Dec. 8, a Monday night matchup at SoFi Stadium.

So if you’re planning to watch the Rams play at SoFi next season, be prepared to pay a pretty penny.

Washington Football Team plans to have full capacity at FedEx Field this fall

The WFT is hoping to have the seats filled at FedEx Field, though current Maryland restrictions would limit attendance at 50 percent.

The NFL will release the 2021 schedule next week. That means dates and times are known for all of the Washington Football Team’s opponents, and single-game tickets will go on sale shortly thereafter.

Yes, you read that correctly. Tickets will go on sale as Washington plans a return to full capacity at FedEx Field this fall. Currently, Maryland restricts outdoor events to 50 percent capacity, however, and all attendees are required to wear masks and practice social distancing.

Washington team president Jason Wright released the following statement:

As we have always said, the safety of our fans, employees, coaching staff and players is our top priority. We take our responsibility to create a safe return for fans very seriously, and we do so with the confidence and collaboration of our state and local public health authorities with whom we stay in constant contact to assure proper protocols are in place to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Following the 2020 season, our organization was praised for its infection control approaches, and we now endeavor to build on this track record by providing a safe and fun 2021 gameday experience for our fans, the best in all of football.

To celebrate the return of fans to FedEx Field, Washington is waiving all single-game ticket fees for the first 24 hours, beginning when the schedule is released at 8 p.m. ET May 12.

Lions still project as one of the most affordable NFL tickets

It would cost a family of 4 just over $482 to see the Lions play in Ford Field

There have been no fans in the Ford Field stands other than family and close friends of Lions players and staffers in 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic has taken away a vital revenue stream from all NFL teams with heavy restrictions on fan attendance.

A recent report indicates the Lions are missing out on tens of millions in revenue. Based on projections published by the Team Marketing Report this week, the Lions are losing out on quite a bit less than most NFL teams. The reason? The Lions are one of the most affordable NFL teams to go see in person for a family of four.

Based on the best estimates for what would have been ticket and other prices in 2020, it would have cost $482.27 for a family of four to attend a Lions game at Ford Field. Per Team Marketing Report (via Bill Shea of The Athletic), this is what goes into the tabulation formula:

The FCI formula is based on the average cost of four adult non-premium tickets, single-car parking, two draft beers, four soft drinks, four hot dogs and two adult-sized adjustable hats. The hats are a proxy for the souvenirs available at an arena or stadium.

The average across the NFL is $553, with the Las Vegas Raiders topping out at over $783 in their new stadium. Only five teams have a lower cost figure than the Lions. The Cincinnati Bengals are the most affordable at $424.28 for a family of four to attend.

Rams tickets are in very high demand after schedule release

Rams-Cowboys is the No. 1 game in the NFL in terms of ticket demand for the 2020 season.

The 2020 season is a big one for the Los Angeles Rams, and not just because they’re trying to get back to the playoffs after missing it last year. They’ll be trotting out a new-look defense, an offense that no longer features Todd Gurley and Brandin Cooks, and a redesigned set of uniforms next season.

Oh, and they’ll be playing in a spectacular $5 billion stadium that’s set to open this summer.

Anticipation is high for the Rams’ 2020 season, leading to a huge amount of interest among fans. According to SeatGeek, via CNBC, demand for Rams tickets was high after the regular-season schedule was released on Thursday night.

The Rams have the second-most ticket volume in the NFL, and the average resale price is $456. The No. 1 game in the NFL in ticket demand is predictable Rams vs. Cowboys on Sept. 13, the home opener of SoFi Stadium.

As a whole, ticket sales across the NFL are up 234% from last year, according to SeatGeek. That figure comes as a surprise, given the uncertainty of live sports taking place with fans in the stands due to the coronavirus pandemic.

But fans don’t seem deterred from the possibility of games being canceled. That likely has to do with the fact that teams have already put refund and exchange policies in place, protecting fans in the even that the schedule is altered.
