Bears G Teven Jenkins reportedly has calf strains in both legs

ESPN’s Adam Schefter is reporting Jenkins suffered injuries in both his legs last week.

The injury news surrounding Chicago Bears guard Teven Jenkins is getting more bizarre by the day. On Sunday evening, Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reported Jenkins could be sidelined up to six weeks with a leg injury. Now it seems that injury is in both of his legs.

Appearing on ESPN’s NFL Live on Monday afternoon, Adam Schefter reported Jenkins has a calf strain in not one, but both of his legs. In a clip shared by Matt Clapp of Awful Announcing, Schefter indicates the injury (or injuries) occurred last week. “I’ve never heard of that before but that’s what was told to me,” Schefter said while giving his report.

Jenkins participated in joint practices with the Indianapolis Colts last week and spoke to the media following Thursday’s session. There was no indication that there was any injury going on with him. The third-year offensive lineman sat out of Saturday’s 24-17 preseason loss along with the rest of the starting offense.

Injuries are nothing new for Jenkins, unfortunately. After former general manager Ryan Pace traded up in the 2021 NFL Draft to select him in the second round as the team’s future left tackle, Jenkins missed 11 games his rookie year with a back injury. In 2022 after moving to right guard, he was in and out of the lineup with various ailments. He missed time late in the season after he suffered a scary neck injury. In total, Jenkins has played in 19 of a possible 34 games to start his career.

With Jenkins likely missing time, Ja’Tyre Carter or Alex Leatherwood would see increased reps in his absence. They could also opt to bring in a veteran free agent or see who becomes available on the waiver wire when rosters are trimmed in a couple weeks. Regardless, they will need to hone in on a backup plan to start the season.

Head coach Matt Eberflus is expected to meet the media on Tuesday and will likely have an update regarding Jenkins’ status.

8 takeaways from the Bears’ preseason loss to the Colts

This game didn’t provide many answers, but it raised plenty of questions. Here are our takeaways from the Bears 24-17 loss to the Colts.

All good things must come to an end. For the first time in over two years, the Chicago Bears have lost a preseason football game, snapping their five-game winning streak as well as head coach Matt Eberflus’ undefeated streak since becoming head coach. Okay, it’s not that dramatic but the Bears did fall to the Indianapolis Colts 24-17.

The game was dominated by the backups as neither team played many of their starters, including the quarterbacks. That was very apparent in the first quarter with no scoring of any kind. It wasn’t until the second quarter where things began to heat up. The Colts and the Bears traded long touchdown drives thanks to Gardner Minshew and Tyson Bagent, respectively, and were tied up at 7-7 going into halftime.

Following a field goal and another touchdown from the Bears in the third quarter, it appeared Chicago was on its way to another win. But Sam Ehlinger and the Colts had different plans. Indianapolis orchestrated scoring drives on their final three possessions to secure the win.

In a game with no starters, it can be tough to find noteworthy takeaways. This matchup may not have provided many answers, but it raised plenty of questions. Here are our takeaways from Saturday’s loss.

Bears vs. Colts: Everything we know about Chicago’s preseason loss

The Bears are no longer undefeated in the preseason under Matt Eberflus. Here is everything we know about the loss to the Colts.

Preseason game No. 2 is in the books for the 2023 Chicago Bears as they fell to the Indianapolis Colts 24-17, ending Matt Eberflus’ perfect preseason record. Both teams got off to a rocky start as neither squad had many of their starters out on the field.

Neither team was able to do much offensively through the first quarter. The Colts finally put together a productive drive thanks to quarterback Gardner Minshew, who threw a touchdown pass to Juwan Winfree. The Bears responded with their own touchdown drive, led by undrafted rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent to tie things up at halftime.

Things remained tight in the second half but the Colts pulled away in the fourth quarter with two touchdown runs from quarterback Sam Ehlinger. A fumble by Bears fullback Robert Burns ended any comeback bid, which led to a field goal by the Colts to cement the victory.

Here is everything we know following the disappointing loss.

WATCH: Bears QB Tyson Bagent dials up his own number for TD vs. Colts

The undrafted rookie shined during his first possession against the Colts.

Chicago Bears undrafted rookie quarterback Tyson Bagent is making a name for himself this preseason. The star passer from Division II Shepherd University led the Bears on a 17-play touchdown drive that went 92 yards, capped off with a two-yard scramble by Bagent into the end zone.

Bagent relieved quarterback P.J. Walker, who started in place of Justin Fields, and immediately sparked the offense. He went 7-of-8 for 61 yards with a couple of nice screen passes and darts to wide receiver Daurice Fountain. With Johnson getting 32 yards on seven carries on the drive, the Bears were able to put together their first sustained drive of the game.

Inside the Colts five-yard line, Bagent dropped back to pass and found space on the left side of the field. He decided to tuck the ball and run before diving into the end zone. The touchdown run tied the game at 7-7, which remains the score at halftime.

WATCH: Bears WRs prank Tyler Scott with expensive dinner bill

The Bears rookie was speechless when he saw the tab.

The Chicago Bears wide receivers enjoyed a nice dinner together before their second preseason game of the season against the Indianapolis Colts on Friday night. But judging by the look on Tyler Scott’s face, the rookie may have wanted to show off his speed by getting out of that restaurant in a hurry after seeing the “bill.”

The position group decided to play a prank on Scott while out to dinner, saying he needed to pick up the tab as part of his rookie duties. The only problem was the total that was given to him was for $20,501.81. Wide receiver Daurice Fountain captured the moment on his Instagram, where Scott was dumbfounded when he saw the total before realizing it was a joke.

The bill was passed around the room before making its way to Scott and Fountain laughed hysterically as the rookie tried to make sense of it. Fortunately, Scott didn’t have to pay and Fountain made sure to note the bill was not $20,000.

Though the fun came at Scott’s expense, it’s good to see the receivers bonding together during the preseason. Scott’s status for the game is up in the air after he sat out of Thursday’s practice. The Bears and Colts kick off later this evening at 6 pm CT.

10 Bears players to watch on Saturday vs. Colts

Here are 10 Bears players to keep an eye on when they take on the Indianapolis Colts this weekend.

Preseason game No. 2 is on deck for the Chicago Bears this weekend as they prepare to take on the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Stadium. This week’s squad will look a bit different than the one that took down the Tennessee Titans 23-17 last weekend, however.

According to head coach Matt Eberflus, quarterback Justin Fields and a few other select starters will not suit up,  The Bears coaching staff believes Fields and others put in plenty of work this week when they held two joint practices with the Colts at their facilities in Westfield, IN.

Even with some of the starters out, there are still many intriguing players worth watching as the Bears look to solidify their team. Many backups and reserves will receive more playing time as a result of Eberflus’ decision, which will help determine the back half of the roster as the regular season inches closer.

Here are 10 players we’ll be watching when the Bears and Colts kick off on Saturday evening at 6 pm CT.

Bears QB Justin Fields will not play Saturday vs. Colts

Justin Fields and other select starters won’t suit up, according to head coach Matt Eberflus

If you were looking forward to watching Justin Fields on Saturday, prepare to be disappointed. Chicago Bears head coach Matt Eberflus told reporters on Thursday evening that Fields and other select starters will not play when the Bears take on the Indianapolis Colts on Saturday. Eberflus said the joint practices the Bears had with the Colts proved to be enough work for the young quarterback.

Fields and the rest of the Bears are coming off two days of physical practices against the Colts. The Bears quarterback saw plenty of reps and will rest up before the third and final preseason game on August 26th. It will be the first preseason game Fields doesn’t play in his career. Backup P.J. Walker is expected to start for the Bears in his place.

It’s been a light preseason for Fields up to this point. Last Saturday, Fields and the starting offense saw just seven snaps against the Tennessee Titans but made the most out of them. Fields went 3-for-3 with 129 yards and two touchdowns, going to D.J. Moore and Khalil Herbert on long screen passes. The Bears won 23-17.

While Fields is the most notable player who won’t see action in Indianapolis, Eberflus mentioned other select starters will sit as well. It’s unclear as of now who he’s referring to but one can assume players like Eddie Jackson, Jaquan Brisker, Cody Whitehair, and Tremaine Edmunds won’t suit up as they deal with injuries. The Bears and Colts kick off from Lucas Oil Stadium at 6 pm CT on Saturday.

Instant analysis of Bears’ 19-11 loss to the Colts in Week 4

The Bears’ undefeated season came to an end in brutal fashion as they dropped a 19-11 loss to the Colts in a game uglier than the score.

In the first three weeks of the 2020 season, the Chicago Bears were able to get things going in the fourth quarter, but today against the Indianapolis Colts, they couldn’t do that as their undefeated season comes to an end after a 19-11 loss that drops them to 3-1.

Quarterback Nick Foles got his first start in a Bears uniform after completing a 16-point comeback against the Atlanta Falcons. But against the Colts, the offense couldn’t get anything going. The Bears faced the No. 1 defense in the NFL and totaled 269 yards and 4.6 yards per play.

The Colts were able to score a touchdown on the Bears defense, but that was set up by a blocked punt in the first quarter. It took six plays for the Colts to score and it was finished with former Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers finding tight end Mo Alie-Cox.

It was all defense after the Colts touchdown. There were a total of 12 punts in this game, then Colts rookie kicker Rodrigo Blankenship was able to go 4-for-4 with field goals from 21 yards, 30 yards twice and 44 yards. Bears kicker Cairo Santos got the first three points for the Bears with a 27-yard field goal, then Foles found Allen Robinson late in the fourth quarter for a 16-yard touchdown.

The Bears defense did the best they could to keep their team in the game as they gave up 290 yards and 4.4 yards per play. The Bears were able to force one sack and nine tackles for loss. The Bears had an opportunity for a turnover when a Rivers pass got deflected up in the air, but Khalil Mack couldn’t catch it as it fell right through his hands.

The Bears have to shake this game off and find a way to bounce back fast as they take on Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Thursday Night Football.
