8 takeaways from the Bears’ troubling loss vs. the Buccaneers

From an incompetent offensive game plan to Ngakoue’s inability to finish sacks, here are our takeaways from the Bears loss to the Bucs.

For the first time since 2017, the Chicago Bears have started a season 0-2, dropping a frustrating game to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 27-17. Coincidentally, that 2017 team also lost to Tampa in the blazing September heat in Week 2. But unlike that year, there is no allure or hope of a promising rookie quarterback waiting in the wings while a veteran struggles under center.

This group was supposed to be set at the quarterback position with Justin Fields, featuring an upgraded supporting cast, ready to build on last year and begin competing. But after mustering just 17 points with many of the same issues on display, this team is stuck in the mud with no rope to pull them out.

The Bears were too inconsistent on offense, unable to build on their early momentum and sustain a lead. Even when things got back on track late in the game, catastrophe struck with a pick-six late in the game.

The Buccaneers, meanwhile, were able to capitalize on third downs all day, which kept the defense on the field for far too long. Baker Mayfield had one of his best performances in recent memory, and Mike Evans abused the Bears secondary on multiple occasions.

It was another frustrating showing from a team that doesn’t have many excuses left. Here are our takeaways from the game:

Bears fans are beside themselves after the crushing loss to the Buccaneers

Bears fans are going through it after the crushing 27-17 loss to the Buccaneers.

Any hope of a comeback by the Chicago Bears against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was erased thanks to one questionable play call that led to a defensive touchdown. Bears quarterback Justin Fields had an opportunity to lead a comeback down three points, but a screen pass to Khalil Herbert deep in their own territory ended up getting picked off by Buccaneers linebacker Shaq Barrett for a pick-six, icing the game for Tampa 27-17.

The Bears officially start the season 0-2 with too many questions and not enough answers. The offense was too inconsistent despite showing flashes early, and the defense could only bend before breaking in the suffocating heat and humidity. It was a game that was within reach for much of the day, but now Chicago is winless and staring down the barrel with the Kansas City Chiefs waiting in the wings.

With another loss, Bears fans are going through it, wondering why offensive coordinator Luke Getsy called a screen pass when they were backed up in their own territory, questioning Fields’ play, and everything in between. Here’s how fans are reacting on social media.

Bears safeties Eddie Jackson, Jaquan Brisker exit game vs. Bucs

Both players are questionable to return.

The Chicago Bears lost both their starting safeties in the span of a few minutes. Late in the first quarter, Jaquan Brisker exited the game with an undisclosed injury, and a few plays later, Eddie Jackson limped off the field with his own ailment. Brisker walked to the locker room, and Jackson was carted there.

According to the Bears, Brisker is dealing with an illness, while Jackson has a foot injury. Jackson has been ruled out while Brisker remains questionable to return.

With both safeties out, the Bears are relying on Elijah Hicks and Quindell Johnson to step in for the time being. The defense was able to hold Tampa to a field goal attempt that was blocked, but didn’t fare as well on the next drive. Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield found Mike Evans for a long catch and run, which set up a rushing touchdown from Rachaad White.

Tampa Bay leads Chicago 10-7 in the second quarter.

Bears RG Nate Davis doubtful for Sunday’s game due to death in the family

Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports a death in the family is the reason Nate Davis will likely miss Sunday’s game.

The answer to Chicago Bears guard Nate Davis’ absence has finally been revealed. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, Davis had a close family member pass away recently, and that is likely the reason he was downgraded to doubtful for Sunday’s game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The situation is likely the primary reason Davis missed practice on Thursday, September 7th, as well as other practices during training camp.

Davis signed a three-year, $30 million deal with the Bears in March, coming over from the Tennessee Titans to help shore up the interior of the Bears offensive line. He missed a chunk of voluntary workouts as well as training camp practices throughout the summer, with no reasons given until now. Davis did play in the Bears Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers and had not missed any time until Saturday’s news.

With Davis likely missing the game, the Bears will start recently acquired Dan Feeney or second-year guard Ja’Tyre Carter in his place. The Bears are also without their left guard, Teven Jenkins, who was placed on injured reserve due to a lower leg injury suffered last month.

The Bears take on the Buccaneers Sunday at noon CT.

5 bold predictions for Bears vs. Buccaneers

From Justin Fields taking deep shots to Jaquan Brisker stepping in at nickel corner, here are our bold predictions for Bears vs. Bucs.

It feels like an eternity since the Chicago Bears opened up their season with a disastrous 38-20 loss to the Green Bay Packers. With all of the paralysis by analysis and outrage throughout every corner on social media, it felt as if we would never get to Week 2. But we’re finally here and the Bears have a chance to even up their schedule with a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Chicago travels down to Tampa to take on the 1-0 Buccaneers, hoping to stave off the dreaded 0-2 start, something they haven’t done since 2017. They’ll need to come with a better gameplan and better effort all around to accomplish that, though. Will we see another flat performance on Sunday? Or are the Bears finally ready to begin the 2023 season? Here are five bold predictions for this week’s game.

5 Buccaneers players to watch vs. Bears

If the Bears hope to get their first win of the season, here are some players to watch on the Buccaneers.

The Chicago Bears are turning the page after their dreadful 38-20 Week 1 loss to the Green Bay Packers and are preparing for their first road game of the season. The Bears are set to travel south to Florida to take on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 2.

Tampa Bay isn’t the team they have been the last few years after the retirement of Tom Brady, but they did get off to a strong start to begin the year behind new quarterback Baker Mayfield. The Buccaneers defeated the Minnesota Vikings on the road in a tough 20-17 victory thanks to big defensive plays and timely scoring.

If the Bears want to get a win and stave off the dreaded 0-2 start this weekend, here are a few players we’ll need to keep an eye on:

Chicago vs. San Francisco: Which 49ers player would you want on the Bears?

The 49ers have a ton of talent on their roster, from Nick Bosa to Trent Williams. Which player would you want to steal for the Bears?

The Chicago Bears (3-4) will host the San Francisco 49ers (2-4) on Sunday, where both teams are desperate for a win to break their respective losing streaks.

The Bears are coming off a humiliating loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (6-1), where the game was over before kickoff. The Bucs delivered a 35-point blowout that has made Chicago a complete laughing stock of the NFL. The offense was wholly ineffective — surprise, surprise — and mustered just three points and Justin Fields turned the ball over five times. That gave Tampa Bay some short fields, where the Bears defense didn’t stand a chance.

Meanwhile, the 49ers are coming off an equally brutal 30-18 loss to the Indianapolis Colts (3-4), where there’s been rumblings that Kyle Shanahan might be on the hot seat. The offense continues to struggle, although the 49ers did put up 15 more points than the Bears last week.

The Bears are early 3.5-point home underdogs against the 49ers, according to Tipico Sportsbook. Which is a bit of a shock considering San Francisco has lost four straight games and appear in flux just like Chicago. But that’s how bad things have gotten in the span of two weeks for the Bears.

While the 49ers have lost four straight games, there’s a ton of talent on their roster, from edge rusher Nick Bosa to linebacker Fred Warner to left tackle Trent Williams.

There’s many to choose from, but which 49ers player would you want to steal for the Bears?
