Mariscal on the fight’s key moment

“It’s always going to be tough to get finishes on these big names. He’s a well-experienced fighter. He’s been in the UFC for a long time. I’m just glad to go out there with a good fight IQ and get the victory.”

Mariscal on getting his black belt

“I’m a black belt in judo, so it’s good to put this black belt in jiu-jitsu up on my resume. … Every day of my life, (I’ve been working toward my black belt). I get with my coaches – it’s all consistently. They’re not just giving them away (for nothing).”

Mariscal on what he wants next

“(I want) anybody. I’ve been calling out dudes. My last press conference, I gave out names. They don’t even look at it, those guys. It’s whoever – anybody, anywhere, any time. I’ve never said no to an opponent.”

UFC Fight Night 253’s Chepe Mariscal eager to climb ranks with ‘gladiator’ mentality

Chepe Mariscal has designs on being one of the UFC’s great action fighters.

[autotag]Chepe Mariscal[/autotag] has designs on being one of the UFC’s great action fighters.

Mariscal is off to a hot start to his octagon tenure with four consecutive victories and one Fight of the Night bonus. He will look to continue his winning ways Saturday at UFC Fight Night 253 when he takes on Ricardo Ramons in a featherweight bout at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas (ESPN+).

Ramos (17-6 MMA, 8-5 UFC) has shown capable of delivering jaw-dropping moments in the cage, too, with three Performance of the Night bonuses to his name, including two for spinning back elbow knockouts. That creates a recipe for a memorable bout, and Mariscal (17-6 MMA, 4-0 UFC) is embracing that reality.

“I feel like I’m that gladiator who just takes every fight,” Mariscal told MMA Junkie Radio. “Whoever I’ve got to get through, whatever their name is. … I want to be one of the most violent fighters out there.”

Despite his style, Mariscal, 32, finds himself fighting at the UFC Apex for the third consecutive time instead of in front of sold-out crowd in large arenas. However, he hopes that will change going forward if he keeps producing the way he has been.

“I feel like I will obviously keep climbing the ladder,” Mariscal said. “I look at it as the UFC is stacked with superstars right now, and I know I’ve got to keep knocking on the door and hopefully get on the those big pay-per-view cards.”

Chepe Mariscal embarrassed by weight miss for UFC on ESPN 61: ‘I didn’t even want to come to the arena’

Chepe Mariscal is not happy with his weight miss for UFC on ESPN 61.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Chepe Mariscal[/autotag]’s fourth fight in the UFC was almost flawless.

Mariscal (17-6 MMA, 4-0 UFC) got his hand raised, dominated a tough veteran in Damon Jackson, and competed in his first UFC co-main event slot. However, despite all the good that went down at Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 61 which took place at the UFC Apex, Mariscal missed weight for the fight, coming in 3.5 pounds over the featherweight limit.

Mariscal was not happy to come in heavy for the biggest fight of his MMA career thus far.

“We kind of calculated the weight cut wrong, especially with the Vegas heat, and kind of shot my body,” Mariscal told reporters at the UFC on ESPN 61 post-fight interview. “Honestly, I was so embarrassed that I was going to probably through the fight because I have so much respect for the people that lose the weight, do the time, and do everything else. That’s why I felt bummed and didn’t want to embarrass myself.

“I didn’t even want to come to the arena, but my corner kept me in line. They were like, ‘Man, we have to do what we can. If they don’t want to fight, that’s fine, but we have to try to do what we can,’ and we did. They got a little extra percentage off that, and I was willing to give up the pay and whatever, they were down to fight. We just said yes, and we went out there and performed.”

With the win over Jackson (23-7-1 MMA, 6-5-1 UFC), Marsical is now on a seven-fight winning streak, with four of those losses coming in the UFC’s octagon. Mariscal would be happy to get a ranked opponent next, but he’s not really sweating it. He’s open to whoever comes next.

“There’s no specific opponent,” Mariscal said about his next step. “I just want to fight everyone. I’m not scared of anyone in the featherweight division, the lightweight division. I’m just ready to come out here and own whoever is in my way. It’s part of the journey. I’m 4-0 in the UFC, and I just want to keep that up.”

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

In a 3-round featherweight bout on the main card, Damon Jackson and Chepe Mariscal meet Saturday at UFC on ESPN 61 — also known as UFC Vegas 95 — at the UFC APEX. Let’s analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the UFC on ESPN 61: Jackson vs. Mariscal odds, and make our expert picks and predictions.

The prelims begin 5 p.m. ET on ESPN/ESPN+, while the main card starts at 7 p.m. ET, also on ESPN/ESPN+.

Records: Jackson (23-6-1) | Mariscal (16-6-0)

Jackson picked up a split-decision win over Alexander Hernandez April 6, halting a 2-bout losing skid. He suffered a unanimous-decision loss to Billy Quarantillo in Aug. 2023, while getting knocked out in Round 2 against Dan Ige Jan. 2023.

Mariscal has won all 3 of his fights since arriving at the UFC level, and he has won 6 straight pro bouts dating back to March 4, 2022. His last fight was a split-decision win against Morgan Charriere April 6, and 2 of his 3 UFC bouts have ended up going the distance.

Jackson stands 4 inches taller than his counterpart and holds a 2-inch reach advantage. Mariscal has a 4.70-to-3.00 significant strikes landed per minute advantage and is much more accurate at 64.77% to just 49.29%. Jackson has a 1.38-to-0.39 submission average advantage.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

UFC on ESPN 61: Jackson vs. Mariscal picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

Mariscal (-194) will cost you nearly 2 times your potential return, and that’s a little too expensive straight up on the 2-way line.

JACKSON (+162) is worth a look as a rather moderate underdog. His ground game is good, and Mariscal hasn’t seen an opponent with a wrestling game like his.

If you really want to get crazy with the potential for a big payoff, JACKSON BY SUBMISSION (+550) is worth a roll of the dice. If Jackson can get Mariscal to the mat, it’s not going to go well for the favorite, as he is a puncher and more of a toe-to-toe brawler.

Over/Under (O/U)

UNDER 2.5 ROUNDS (-110) is worth playing lightly, but go with a half-unit play at most.

We’re looking for this fight to end with a tap, and NO (-140): WILL FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is certainly not priced out of line.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

UFC Fight Night 240: Charriere vs. Mariscal picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

We get a fight between 2 young prospects looking to climb the rungs of the UFC ladder.

The 28-year-old Charriere (-120) has shown off tremendous punching power, dropping Zecchini in the 1st round of his UFC debut, while picking up 3 straight finishes inside the distance.

Mariscal (+100) has won 2 fights at the UFC level since his debut, with mixed results. He, too, is a punching machine, and this is going to be an entertaining bout.

If you don’t want to pick a winner in this rather evenly matched fight, playing KO/TKO/DQ (+175) for the “How Fight Will End” prop might be your best bet. If either of these knockout artists wins via KO/TKO/DQ, you win.

Over/Under (O/U)

In addition, NO (+130): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is a strong value at plus-money with 2 young fighters who have plenty of KO/TKO wins under their collective belts.

These fighters are likely to take the 1st 5 minutes to feel each other out. We should see the action pick up in Round 2, however, and we’re unlikely to see the judges get involved.
