UFC Fight Night 240: Charriere vs. Mariscal picks and predictions

Fight result (2-way line or moneyline)

We get a fight between 2 young prospects looking to climb the rungs of the UFC ladder.

The 28-year-old Charriere (-120) has shown off tremendous punching power, dropping Zecchini in the 1st round of his UFC debut, while picking up 3 straight finishes inside the distance.

Mariscal (+100) has won 2 fights at the UFC level since his debut, with mixed results. He, too, is a punching machine, and this is going to be an entertaining bout.

If you don’t want to pick a winner in this rather evenly matched fight, playing KO/TKO/DQ (+175) for the “How Fight Will End” prop might be your best bet. If either of these knockout artists wins via KO/TKO/DQ, you win.

Over/Under (O/U)

In addition, NO (+130): WILL THE FIGHT GO THE DISTANCE? is a strong value at plus-money with 2 young fighters who have plenty of KO/TKO wins under their collective belts.

These fighters are likely to take the 1st 5 minutes to feel each other out. We should see the action pick up in Round 2, however, and we’re unlikely to see the judges get involved.

Chepe Mariscal details relationship, ‘crazy’ sparring sessions with UFC BMF champion Justin Gaethje

UFC featherweight Chepe Mariscal explains how “crazy” sparring sessions with BMF champ Justin Gaethje has helped his career.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Chepe Mariscal[/autotag] credits “crazy” sparring sessions and a strong relationship with UFC BMF titleholder Justin Gaethje for elevating his game.

Mariscal (15-6 MMA, 2-0 UFC) has found success thus far in his UFC career through a few motivating factors. On the mental side, he will never forget the motivating words his now-deceased Mother gave him to keep pushing forward with his MMA career after a couple of losses in other promotions.

Physically, sparring with former UFC interim lightweight champion and current BMF Gaethje has helped him prepare at a high level.

“Oh, it’s crazy,” Mariscal told reporters at Wednesday’s UFC Fight Night 240 media day. “It’s a highlight in there. I’m surprised there’s no cameras in there, you know? Me and him do crazy stuff to each other. I’m not big on posting all that stuff, and that’s the thing: Guys like to post practice stuff.

“Like, anybody can win at practice. Anybody can look good on the mits. It’s like, can you perform? Can you fight? Can you actually be a fighter? I feel like seeing him in the room and then seeing him perform, I was like I could do the exact same thing or better.”

https://www.instagram.com/p/C23v2q3AzS_/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&igsh=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

It’s not just exchanging punches with Gaethje that has helped Mariscal grow as a fighter, although that’s how things started. Since being around each other more, the pair have formed a bond, and Mariscal has leaned on Gaethje for career advice.

“Me and him at first were kind of like head on head, going against each other a little bit, and then we grew a great friendship where I see more of just ‘The Highlight,’ more of Gaethje, the outside guy,” Mariscal said. “He gave me more advice than any other fighter. Like how is it to be in the big show, or fight in the main event, or be the BMF titleholder.”

Mariscal returns to action at UFC Fight Night 240 at the UFC Apex to take on Morgan Charriere. It will be Mariscal’s first fight of the calendar year, and an opportunity to stretch his current winning streak to six.

Chepe Mariscal: I ‘heard a pop’ when Jack Jenkins dislocated arm, but ‘I have to stop when the referee tells me’

Chepe Mariscal reacts to Jack Jenkins’s arm injury at UFC 293.

SYDNEY – [autotag]Chepe Mariscal[/autotag] knew something might’ve been wrong, but either way he had to do his job.

The UFC featherweight defeated Jack Jenkins this past Saturday at UFC 293 after Jenkins dislocated his arm in a grappling exchange during their contest. Mariscal (15-6 MMA, 2-0 UFC) heard a pop when Jenkins injured his arm, but he continued fighting for a brief moment, even after Jenkins was verbally saying he was done.

“I didn’t (realize he was injured), even though I kind of heard a pop,” Mariscal told reporters backstage at UFC 293. “Sometimes in training you hear those kinds of things, and you just have to continue on. But I heard a pop and I went to readjust, and he kept saying, ‘My arm. My arm.’ I can’t stop when he’s saying it. I have to stop when the referee tells me to stop.”

Mariscal said he will contemplate a bantamweight move before a return. Either way, Mariscal’s goal is the same regardless of weight class.

“I definitely want to keep climbing the ladder,” Mariscal said. “There’s obviously a lot of names I need to go through, so I can be in the top 10 or challenge for the title. I’ve obviously got to chop some dude down and get my way there.”

UFC 293 video: Jack Jenkins suffers disgusting arm injury on Chepe Marsical throw

At UFC 293, Jack Jenkins planted his arm incorrectly as Chepe Mariscal tried to toss him to the canvas, resulting in a nasty injury.

[autotag]Jack Jenkins[/autotag] left UFC 293 with a loss and an arm injury.

As he attempted to defend a throw attempt by opponent [autotag]Chepe Mariscal[/autotag] (15-6 MMA, 2-0 UFC) during the second round of their featherweight bout on the prelims of the event Saturday at Qudos Bank Arena in Sydney, Jenkins (12-3 MMA, 2-1 UFC) incorrectly planted on his right arm.

With his weight and gravity forcing his arm in a wrong-direction 90-degree angle, Jenkins was rendered unable to continue as he absorbed a Mariscal punch to the head. The TKO stoppage came at 3:19 of Round 2.

The loss is Jenkins’ first in the UFC and snaps a nine-fight winning streak. Jenkins entered UFC 293 with promotional victories over Jamall Emmers and Don Shainis.

Mariscal picks up his second UFC victory in three months. He extends his winning streak to five.

UFC on ABC 5 medical suspensions: Josh Emmett out indefinitely from damage sustained

Josh Emmett and Justin Tafa suffered graphic injuries at UFC on ABC 5 and are among those suspended indefinitely by the Florida commission.

UFC on ABC 5 took place Saturday at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla. and featured 13 fights.

There were back-and-forth battles, knockouts, an eye gouge, and a submission. Through these fights, the athletes involved sustained injuries that will put them on the shelf for some time, unless cleared by a doctor.

Tuesday, MMA Junkie acquired a list of athlete medical suspensions from the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR), the sanctioning body that oversaw the event. The DBPR does not disclose injury specifics, but does show the durations of the suspension.

Atop the card, [autotag]Ilia Topuria[/autotag] proved he’s a premiere contender when he dominated [autotag]Josh Emmett[/autotag] en route to a unanimous decision, including a rare 10-7 scorecard. The two headliners were suspended indefinitely by DBPR afterward.

Seven fighters total were handed indefinite suspensions, while two were handed terms of specific durations and the rest of the card was cleared on fight night. Fighters are permitted to return prior to the end of their assigned durations if they are cleared by a doctor.
