Rece Davis: Texas will make the playoff based on ranking, schedule

“I think they all but secured a spot.”

The College Football Playoff poll is out for Week 11. According to one college football analyst, the No. 7 Texas Longhorns (8-1) are solidly in playoff contention.

Respected college football voice Rece Davis said the following of the Longhorns heading into the final weeks of the season.

“Texas is going to the College Football Playoff and I think they all but secured a spot. I know there’s there’s a very specific scenario that might keep them out, but I think they have basically secured a spot, because the last team that could beat them did not.”

To be sure, Kansas State is not the last team on Texas’ remaining schedule that can beat the Longhorns. That might be the national perception, but the final three games will likely be highly contested battles. Add in a potential Big 12 title game against an Oklahoma State team that has won five straight and this season is far from over.

Davis disagreed in his comments on the rankings.

“I don’t think (Oklahoma State) is suited to beat them, because you’re not going to run on them. So I think Texas had a gargantuan weekend and is really close, despite the one loss, to have having secured a spot in the CFP.”

While the team’s playoff spot is probably not as solidified as Davis believes, the Longhorns’ chances are strong. The program is set to face three teams that don’t have their expected starting quarterback this season in TCU (4-5), Iowa State (5-4) and Texas Tech (4-5).

Texas will look to begin a strong finish to the 2023 season on Saturday against TCU at 6:30 p.m. CT on ABC.

ESPN ranks teams most likely to make the CFP

Who does ESPN consider to be most likely to make the CFP? UGA, Alabama, and Ohio State enter the year as big favorites

ESPN’s Allstate playoff predictor has ranked the teams with the best chances to make the College Football Playoff. Last season, the playoff featured Georgia, Alabama, Cincinnati and Michigan.

This year, Georgia, Alabama and Ohio State are considered heavy favorites to make the playoffs. All three teams face challenging opponents in the first couple of weeks of the season.

ESPN gives 16 teams a better than 2% chance to make the playoffs. Five of these teams are from the SEC, while the Big Ten has four teams.

Overall, ESPN’s playoff prediction is fairly accurate in the preseason. The model has projected that every national champion, during the playoff era, had at least a 65% chance to make the playoff entering the season.

Here’s who ESPN considers the 10 teams most likely to make the playoffs:

Playoff predictors are not always accurate, and certainly are not when it comes to Texas.

The Longhorns return blue chip talent across the field, with Bijan Robinson and Xavier Worthy among the nation’s top returning contributors. Even so, it will take more than returning production to win games.

The teams you might expect are at the top of the list. Texas A&M brings up the rear with a 2% chance to reach the playoff.

247Sports’ Josh Pate makes preseason CFP prediction

247Sports college football analyst Josh Pate has released his preseason CFP prediction.

247Sports college football analyst Josh Pate has released his preseason tprediction on who he thinks will make the College Football Playoff. Pate expects two of the country’s three consensus best teams to make the CFP, but he does not predict that the Georgia Bulldogs will return to the CFP.

Georgia, Ohio State, and Alabama are routinely ranked as the top three teams in college football heading into the 2022 season. Georgia lost a lot of talent to the 2022 NFL draft. The Dawgs have the talent to return to the CFP.

Josh Pate thinks Georgia will lose in both the regular season and in the SEC Championship. Who does he pencil in for the CFP?

Where is UGA in PFF’s preseason top 25 poll?

PFF ranks the preseason top 25 ahead of the college football season. Where are the Georgia Bulldogs?

The Georgia Bulldogs finished the 2019 season with a 12-2 record and will look to improve on that mark next season. Kirby Smart and Georgia return an elite defense.

The Dawgs should have the best defense in the nation, but they have several inexperienced newcomers on the offensive side of the football. Wake Forest quarterback transfer Jamie Newman will give Georgia a boost in what should be a very competitive SEC.

There isn’t a clear top quarterback heading into the season in the SEC. Clemson and Ohio State return Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields, who are projected to be the best quarterbacks in the country.

Here’s how PFF ranks the top college football teams entering into the 2020 season:

2. Ohio State

Georgia could potentially face LSU (No. 4 ) in the SEC Championship Game too. Overall, Georgia has another tough schedule ahead in 2020, but could afford to lose one game and still make the College Football Playoff.
