On this day: Celtics trade McAdoo to Pistons, Maxwell to Clippers

On this day, the Boston Celtics traded away big man Bob McAdoo and forward Cedric Maxwell to the Pistons and Clippers, respectively.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise traded away Hall of Fame big man Bob McAdoo. His tenure with the Celtics was a short and awkward one. McAdoo did not want to play for Boston, and team general manager Red Auerbach nearly quit his job after owner John Y. Brown used multiple draft picks to secure McAdoo’s services.

The Celtics already had a future Hall of Fame center — Dave Cowens — who was also the head coach, so Brown’s meddling very nearly became a serious disaster. Red decided to stay and McAdoo was traded as compensation for Boston signing future coach and general manager M.L. Carr as a player.

Ironically, Boston ended up getting back the draft assets that would be used to get both Kevin McHale and Robert Parish.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 30

Today’s installment focuses on the 14 players who wore No. 30 over the years as of August 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.

Report: Broadcaster Cedric Maxwell signs three-season deal to call Celtics games

Maxwell, who won two titles with Boston, won’t be retiring any time soon.

It might be the last season we get to see longtime Boston Celtics broadcaster Mike Gorman calling games for the Celtics, but Boston fans got some reassuring news that the change to the Celtics broadcasting crew will not be too drastic any time soon with Boston broadcasting veteran and former Celtics champion Cedric Maxwell inking a new deal to call games for the next three seasons according to new reporting from MassLive’s Brian Robb.

Maxwell, who won two titles with Boston in the early 1980s in the first half of his 11-season career in the league, got into broadcasting after his playing career ended in 1988 and has been calling games for radio with fellow WEEI cohost Sean Grande since 2001.

Maxwell also cohosts the CLNS Media “Cedric Maxwell” podcast with Josue Pavon, where the Kinston native can be heard offering up a broader scope of analysis.

With the 2023 NBA offseason here in full swing, a fair amount of attention tends to turn toward the history of the league in the absence of new deeds to analyze on the court or in roster construction. And in the wake of Philadelphia 76ers legend Julius “Dr. J” Erving putting out an all-time list of NBA greats, others have started to do the same.

Among them are former Boston Celtics championship forward and current broadcaster Cedric Maxwell broke down his list compared to Dr. J’s on his eponymous CLNS Media podcast with cohost Josue Pavon. The names on Erving’s list are Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West and Elgin Baylor along with more modern era players Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson and Karl Malone.

To hear who Maxwell put on his all-time great list, check out the clip embedded below.

Ice Cube opens up on his least-favorite Boston Celtics player

This guy tended to irk opposing fanbases even after he retired as a player.

For fans of the Boston Celtics, some of our most beloved players in the history of the storied franchise also happen to be the most-hated players by fans of other clubs.

For renowned Los Angeles Lakers fan Ice Cube, the founder of the Big3 three-on-three basketball league, one player, in particular, got his goat during that Celtic’s days as a player.

Danny Ainge,” shared the renowned hip-hop pioneer in a recent interview with Boston.com’s Khari Thompson. He just looked like a little brat. But he could shoot and he hustled.”

“I ended up meeting him and he’s a cool dude, but man in those series in the ’80s, he would get under my skin,” suggested Ice Cube. “Him and Cedric Maxwell.”

Maxwell, now a broadcaster for the team he won two titles with in the 1980s, also had that effect on opposing fans. But few former Boston players irritated the folks in the stands cheering for the other squad more than Ainge.

Cedric Maxwell: It was really tough on Marcus Smart when the Boston Celtics traded him

“Marcus took it really tough,” he said.”He thought he was going to be the last one on the ship.”

Champion Boston Celtics forward (and broadcaster) Cedric Maxwell knows firsthand how it feels to be dealt away from the Celtics in the midst of a wide-open contention window, so his perspective is especially valuable for understanding the human dynamics of such a deal.

On a recent episode of his CLNS Media “Cedric Maxwell” podcast, Max and co-host Josue Pavon dived into the game-changing trade that sent Marcus Smart to the Memphis Grizzlies, making room for Kristaps Porzingis to be dealt to Boston from the Washington Wizards in a three-team deal.

“Marcus took it really tough,” he said.”He thought he was going to be the last one on the ship.”

Cornbread provided his immediate reaction to this high-stakes deal, the significance of Smart’s departure and the fresh dynamics Porzingis is poised to inject into Boston’s lineup.

On this day: Maxwell, McHale drafts; Clyde, Shannon born; Brightman passes; G3 2008 Finals

On this day, Boston drafted Cedric Maxwell and Kevin McHale, Earl Shannon and Ben Clyde were born, Al Brightman passed, and Game 3 of the 2008 NBA Finals was lost.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team drafted small forward Cedric Maxwell out of UNC Charlotte with the 12th overall pick of the 1977 NBA draft, their sole selection of note.

Maxwell would play eight seasons for the Celtics, averaging 13.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, and would win two championships with Boston in that stretch (in 1981 and 1984), winning Finals MVP in 1984. After losing his starting role to forward Kevin McHale after an injury, the North Carolina native would be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for legendary sixth man center Bill Walton.

Maxwell maintains a close relationship with the Celtics and their fans to this day, hosting an eponymous podcast and making frequent appearances on local sports media.

Celtics champ, broadcaster Cedric Maxwell wants Boston to keep their core together

Maxwell wants to see the team keep the core together for another deep run at an NBA title.

Not much went right for the Boston Celtics in their Game 7 matchup with the Miami Heat in the 2023 Eastern Conference semifinals.

Star swingman Jayson Tatum twisted his ankle on the very first possession of the contest. Big man Robert Williams III was dealing with a stomach bug throughout the contest, running to the locker room periodically to throw up. 2023 Sixth Man of the Year Malcolm Brogdon and reserve forward Grant Williams were playing through injuries. And star forward Jaylen Brown was having one of the worse postseason series and games of his career.

Despite all of this, the eponymous host of the “Cedric Maxwell” podcast on CLNS Media wants to see the team keep the core together for another deep run at an NBA title.

To hear what he and co-host Josue Pavon have to say about what they want to see change about this club for the 2023-24 season (and what went sideways last season), take a look at the clip embedded below.
