Should the Boston Celtics retire Marcus Smart’s jersey number?

Is there enough of a connection between Smart, the Celtics, and their fans to warrant it?

You love him. You trust him. But now he plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, traded away from the Boston Celtics before he could win a title with the ball club that drafted him out of Oklahoma State. We are of course talking about veteran floor general Marcus Smart, who recently made his first trip back to Boston to face the Celtics at TD Garden as a member of the Grizzlies.

As weird as it might have been at first, it felt like old times almost as soon as the Flower Mound native was seen in the building. Is there enough of a connection between Smart, the Celtics, and their fans to warrant retiring his number with Boston?

This is a contentious question, and on a recent episode of the CLNS Media “Celtics Beat” podcast, Boston Globe reporter Gary Washburn and the hosts of the pod debated this question in light of Smart’s return.

NBA announces Jayson Tatum has the No. 2 selling jersey this season

Celtics superstar Jayson Tatum ranks second in jersey sales so far this season according to the NBA.

The NBA just released sales data from its online shop for the first half of the 2023-24 season, and the Boston Celtics and superstar Jayson Tatum both ranked among the most popular with fans. In fact, Tatum sits No. 2 in jersey sales in the entire league.

Golden State Warriors guard Steph Curry once again had the top selling jersey, as he did a year ago, while this time last season, Tatum ranked No. 6 in the league. Los Angeles Lakers forward LeBron James, San Antonio Spurs big man Victor Wembanyama, and Milwaukee Bucks forward Giannis Antetokounmpo rounded out the top five spots for jersey sales this year.

Jersey sales aren’t the only way to underscore Tatum’s popularity in the league. Tatum was just named a starter for the 2024 NBA All-Star Game, earning the third most fan votes in the league in the process. This represents his fifth consecutive All-Star nod.

New Celtics City Edition jerseys ranked No.11 in NBA for 2023-24

Tied at No. 11 overall with the Charlotte Hornets (rarely a good thing in terms of basketball but not bad in terms of uni design) and trailing the Sacramento Kings (never a good thing, to be honest), the Celtics kept it simple.

The Boston Celtics (and the rest of the NBA) have new City Edition jerseys, and there are more complaints than usual about how they look this season, perhaps a product of old persons yelling at others to get off of their lawns, but also perhaps they are more garish than usual. But as to how they stack up against each other, the staff of the Athletic ranked them all, and the Boston Celtics’ City Editions didn’t do all that badly.

Tied at No. 11 overall with the Charlotte Hornets (rarely a good thing in terms of basketball but not bad in terms of uni design) and trailing the Sacramento Kings (never a good thing, to be honest), the Celtics kept it simple, and that landed with the critics. “If you’re not going to be creative, then keep it clean,” noted James Edwards III. “Boston did.”

“Maybe I’m in the minority, but I actually like the blending of the white on the front with the wood grain texture on the sides,” observed Kelly Iko.

“Who knew Boston had a history of furniture making? I sure didn’t. The wood coloring on the side is also a nod to peach baskets, the part of history I would expect,” added Jason Jones.

All in all — especially in a season where said City Editions were especially ugly — this is a win for a team that has put out not only the Enya Irish Pub C.E.s, but the grey Underoos Shirsey.

Just be happy Boston has yet to devise its own version of the Dallas Mavericks garbage bag jerseys.

New Boston Celtics City Editions leaked — what do we think of them?

While not as bad as some past blunders, these new City Editions are not landing well with everyone. Are they right?

The unveiling of a new NBA jersey is usually a moment of excitement for fans, and the Boston Celtics are normally no exception, the Underoos shirseys and Enya Irish Pub City Editions excepted.

The recent leak of their 2023-24 City Edition jersey, however, has left many underwhelmed and questioning the creativity in modern jersey design in some corners.

When a new jersey is introduced, it should be more than just a piece of fabric; it should tell a story, resonate with fans and stand as a symbol of pride. The leaked Boston Celtics City Edition jersey, unfortunately, falls short on many of these aspects, at least based on the limited images circulating of them so far.

Are they better than they might look initially, or are we set to be disappointed by these newest Celtics City Edition jerseys?

The hosts of the CLNS Media “How Bout Them Celtics!” podcast broke down their thoughts on a recent episode; check out the clip above to hear what they had to say.

Every player in Boston Celtics history who wore No. 14

Today’s installment focuses on the four players who wore No. 14 over the years as of September 2023.

The Boston Celtics have more retired jerseys than any other team in the NBA, but that doesn’t mean the rest of their jerseys have little history of interest tied to them.

In fact, with 17 titles to their name and decades of competitive basketball played in them, their unretired jersey numbers pack in some of the most history not hanging from the rafters of any team in the league. To that end, we have launched our accounting of that history, with every player in every jersey worn by more than one Celtics player in the storied franchise’s history accounted for.
