On this date, the Boston Celtics scored their second-lowest point total in team history and saw Larry Bird and Antoine Walker triple-double.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, in the very first NBA season of the storied franchise’s existence in 1946, the Celtics scored their second-lowest point total in franchise history in their 17th game of existence in the Basketball Association of America (BAA – a precursor league to the NBA). The ignominious honor came on the road in a 62-44 loss to the New York Knicks, the Celtics’ 14th loss of a very rough inaugural campaign for the franchise.

Mercifully for the Boston fans of that era, it was not an auspicious beginning for the team that would later win an NBA-record 17 titles.

Wing Wyndol Gray led all of Boston’s players with 13 points, hitting one of his two free-throw attempts.

On this day in Celtics history, the storied franchise played its first game.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the storied franchise played the first game of its storied history in 1946 as it kicked off play in the brand-new Basketball Association of America, which became the National Basketball Association in 1949).

That first contest was not an auspicious one. The Celtics dropped their inaugural game to the (now defunct) Providence Steamrollers, 59-53. Boston fell to 0-1 to start the 1946-47 BAA season on a sour note that offered no hints of the many wins to come. It was of course the Celtics’ debut for the entire team, but in that era, sparse counting stat records were kept — or even conceived of.

With that in mind, let’s review the details we do have.

On this day: former Celtic Dana Barros signed; Al Brightman born

On this day, the Boston Celtics signed guard Dana Barros in free agency, and ex-Boston forward Al Brightman was born.

On this day in 1995 in Boston Celtics history, the storied ball club signed veteran guard Dana Barros as an unrestricted free agent. A native of Boston, Massachusetts, Barros played for his hometown Boston College before being picked up in the 1989 NBA draft by the Seattle Supersonics, for whom he would play four seasons.

Barros was later traded to the Charlotte Hornets in 1993, but the Boston native barely had time to get a cup of coffee with his new team, which dealt him yet again to the Philadelphia 76ers a mere two days later in what would prove to be a more stable landing spot.

The Massachusetts native played two seasons for the Sixers — making the All-Star team in 1995 — before he left the team in free agency for his hometown club.

On this day: James Young, Jermaine O’Neal signed; Tyler Zeller traded for

On this day, former Boston Celtics James Young and Jermaine O’Neal signed with the team, and Tyler Zeller arrived in a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers.

On this date in Boston Celtics history, shooting guard James Young signed his three-year rookie deal with the Celtics in 2014. A native of Flint, Michigan, Young was picked up 17th overall out of the University of Kentucky in the NBA draft of that same year.

He would spend much of his time playing for the Maine Red Claws (now, Celtics) in the NBA D League (as the G League was still known then) in his inaugural season after missing Summer League due to injuries. Young would play for Boston for a total of three seasons, but could never quite find his footing in the NBA despite abundant patience from the front office.

The Kentucky product averaged 2.3 points and 1.1 rebounds in his time in green and white.

On this day: Maxwell, McHale drafts; Clyde, Shannon born; Brightman passes; G3 2008 Finals

On this day, Boston drafted Cedric Maxwell and Kevin McHale, Earl Shannon and Ben Clyde were born, Al Brightman passed, and Game 3 of the 2008 NBA Finals was lost.

On this day in Boston Celtics history, the team drafted small forward Cedric Maxwell out of UNC Charlotte with the 12th overall pick of the 1977 NBA draft, their sole selection of note.

Maxwell would play eight seasons for the Celtics, averaging 13.7 points, 6.6 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game, and would win two championships with Boston in that stretch (in 1981 and 1984), winning Finals MVP in 1984. After losing his starting role to forward Kevin McHale after an injury, the North Carolina native would be traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for legendary sixth man center Bill Walton.

Maxwell maintains a close relationship with the Celtics and their fans to this day, hosting an eponymous podcast and making frequent appearances on local sports media.
