4-star 2022 offensive lineman, Carson Hinzman, having tough time deciding between Ohio State and Wisconsin

Does Ohio State have a shot to land this 4-star OL? #GoBucks

The first day of the early signing period is over, and there weren’t a ton of surprises for Ohio State. There was a flip that was a disappointing development for the Buckeyes when 4-star cornerback Terrance Brooks flipped to Texas, but everything else was pretty much as expected.

OSU brought in 18 recruits all told for the 2022 class, but it’s still looking to add to what is considered another top-five haul. One of the names out there that the Buckeyes have a legitimate shot at is 4-star interior offensive lineman, Carson Hinzman, out of Hammond, Wisconsin.

Yes, you heard that right. An offensive line prospect out of Wisconsin has not signed with the Badgers yet and is apparently having one whale of a time deciding between Wisconsin and Ohio State. He is generally torn and was supposed to make his final decision Friday.

But that’s all changed based on an announcement on Hinzman’s Twitter account. He has clawed back that date as wrestles with the decision between presumably Ohio State and Wisconsin. Hinzman is ranked as the No. 6 interior offensive lineman, and 134th overall recruit in the class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Hinzman did not provide a timetable for his decision but you have to think that it’ll come soon. The fact that OSU is still in the running for a kid from Wisconsin has to bode well for the Buckeyes. You can never have too many offensive linemen, especially on the interior, and to get one of Hinzman’s quality would be huge, most notably if Ohio State could take one right out from under the nose of the home state team that has a pedigree for developing guys in the trenches.

However, there’s the other side of the coin as well. When things are appearing fairly even with a kid wrestling with a decision, that pull to stay home can usually be the deciding factor.

We’ll continue to stay on top of this as we hear more.

A big-time Wisconsin class of 2022 target is pushing back his commitment date

A big-time Wisconsin class of 2022 target is pushing back his commitment date

Wisconsin football ended early signing day in a big way, as the program earned a commitment from in-state four-star defensive end Isaac Hamm.

The last big-time in-state target is four-star offensive lineman Carson Hinzman. A commitment from the Hammond, Wisconsin native would mean a 4/6 finish for Wisconsin in the class’ ‘Super Six’ (Hinzman, Hamm, Braelon Allen, Joe Brunner, Penn State’s Jerry Cross and Notre Dame’s Billy Schrauth).

Hinzman was originally planning on announcing his commitment today. However, the four-star recruit tweeted last night he would need more time before making a final decision.

So this means Wisconsin is still in a tight battle with Ohio State to land the state’s No. 2 recruit, the class’ No. 134 overall player and No. 6 interior offensive lineman.

Wisconsin battling Big Ten rivals for 2022 four-star OL Carson Hinzman

2022 OL Carson Hinzman provides an update on his recruitment

Wisconsin target Carson Hinzman is down to three. The Badger State native has long been a top priority for the Badgers in the 2022 class, and now has UW in his final three schools.

A consensus four-star prospect according to 247Sports, Hinzman has starred at Saint Croix Central High School in the Badger State. He is ranked as the No. 2 overall player in the state of Wisconsin behind OT Joe Brunner per 247Sports.

His final three is an all Big Ten trio. Hinzman is down to Wisconsin, Ohio State, and Minnesota. As far as a decision time frame, early October seems to be the target:

Rivals: Notre Dame could steal recruit in Wisconsin’s backyard

This could be a huge development

The rivalry between the Badgers and the Irish didn’t get a chance to see the field last season, their game was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but their other battles off the field still are happening. With a report from Adam Gorney of Rivals, Wisconsin offensive lineman Carson Hinzman might not be a lock to the Badgers that many have thought.

Gorney suggests that the planned visits to Ohio State, Iowa and the Irish have now put a wrench into the Badgers locking up one of the best prospects in their backyard.

Hinzman could still very well end up with the Badgers like many other elite offensive lineman from the state, but saying no to the Buckeyes and the Irish among other is easier said than done. – Gorney

The six-foot-five-inch and 280-pound lineman is being courted by some of the best Midwest programs, putting thoughts into Hinzman’s head that could ultimately lure him away from his home state.

The early signing period is rapidly approaching and the Irish currently have 13 commits, two of them being offensive lineman. Brian Kelly would love to add Hinzman to the group and is seems like they currently have a fight chance to gain his commitment in the near future.

The Badger target earns a prestigious invite

Wisconsin football 2022 target Carson Hinzman has been one of the top-ranked prospects in the Badger State throughout this recruiting cycle. The Hammond, Wisconsin native will now have a chance to go up against the best from around the country at the All-American Bowl in 2022.

The Saint Croix Central product announced his invitation via Twitter on Thursday:

Nine Wisconsin targets will be on campus for official visits in early June

Reports surfaced yesterday of the NCAA ending its recruiting dead period on June 1, a period that had been repeatedly extended due to COVID-19.

In light of the news, it’s been announced over the last few days that nine Wisconsin targets in the class of 2022 will be on campus for official visits during the first weekend of June.

Here are those nine players and where they stand in 247Sports’ recruiting rankings:

Two Wisconsin targets included in USATODAY’s list of ‘The top offensive linemen in the class of 2022’

USATODAY High School Sports published the 22 top offensive linemen in the class of 2022 today and included in the list are two of Wisconsin

USATODAY High School Sports published the 22 top offensive linemen in the class of 2022 today and included in their list are two of Wisconsin’s top targets in the class.

They are four-star OT Joe Brunner in at No. 7 and four-star OG Carson Hinzman in at No. 14.

Brunner and Hinzman are both Wisconsin natives, are the state’s No. 1 and No. 2 class of 2022 recruits respectively and both have crystal ball predictions to the Badgers.

Wisconsin has built some impressive momentum on the recruiting trail after landing a program-best class of 2021. One of the foundations of that success is landing the top in-state talent.

While Myles Burkett is the program’s only commitment in the class, signs point towards their recruiting momentum continuing as the recruiting cycle continues to heat up.

Texas Football Recruiting: Longhorns offer No. 2 prospect from Wisconsin

Texas continues to reach out to the top offensive lineman in the country.

Offensive line recruiting will be the most critical part of the Texas’ 2022 class. Tom Herman’s staff neglected the positional group during his last year in charge, leaving the depth chart thin and without elite talent.

With the new staff, Steve Sarkisian and Kyle Flood continue to reach out to the top offensive lineman in the country. On Thursday, they went up north to Wisconsin and extended an offer to Carson Hinzman, a four-star offensive guard.

Eight Big Ten schools have offered Hinzman, the most out of any conference. Iowa State and Kansas State are the only other Big 12 schools that have gotten into the Hinzman sweepstakes.

Call from Jim Harbaugh had 2022 4-star Wisconsin OL ‘shell-shocked’

The Wisconsin-based offensive guard was ‘shell-shocked’ when he got a call from Jim Harbaugh on Sept. 1. More on his recruitment here.

[jwplayer 98qM8Z2v-XNcErKyb]

When you’re an offensive lineman living in Wisconsin and you have an offer from Wisconsin, you know you’re doing something right. But if you have an offer from Wisconsin, Michigan, Alabama, Penn State, LSU, Notre Dame and Oregon? Yeah, you’re doing something really right.

Such is the case for 2022 Hammond (WI) St. Croix Central four-star offensive guard Carson Hinzman. When Sept. 1 rolled around and college coaches could initiate with the nation’s No. 116 player in the country, regardless of position, he heard from coaches from all across college football, all clamoring for his services.

Of course, Michigan offensive line coach Ed Warinner was one of those many who made sure to reach out. Hinzman told WolverinesWire that what was once tepid has seemed to gather quite a bit of steam in both recent weeks as well as days. Regardless, they’ve been able to work on building a solid relationship.

“It’s been great. We had a little bit of a period where we didn’t have a whole lot of communication, but after we have been able to communicate a lot more,” Hinzman said. “It’s only been two days but he’s been pushing a lot of Michigan values and things like that. We’ve had a few conversations before, obviously, but we’ve really been talking a lot. He’s a really great guy. He sees me fit as a great player. It would be crazy to play for all those people, too. It’s The Big House. It’s called The Big House for a reason.

“He’s a really great guy and I’m honored to be talking to him.”

While hearing from Warinner was expected, what was not for Hinzman was getting a call from none other than Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh.

When Harbaugh’s name came across his screen on the morning of Sept. 1, it was something of a surreal moment for him.

“Yep, most of the staff actually contacted me, including Coach Harbaugh, which was awesome,” “Obviously it’s pretty great for a man of his status to reach out. I think the majority of the staff reached out, which is really awesome.

“He just kinda pushed the same thing that Coach Warinner did, which is, ‘I really would love for you to come to Michigan. We think it would be a great fit for you.’ That’s pretty much it. Just him explaining a little bit how he thinks Michigan would be a great fit for me. It’s just kind of a little bit of a shell-shock when you see his name pop up on your phone at 6 in the morning!”

At the moment, Penn State appears to be pushing the hardest for Hinzman, with Wisconsin, Michigan, Notre Dame, Iowa, Tennessee and Arizona State also competing for his services.

As far as what Hinzman is looking for, he’s just looking for the right ‘fit,’ as he explains it. Unsure of when he’ll make a commitment or even whittle his list down, a big part of what appeals to him is the mentality of the staff, the players and even those on campus when it comes to their football program.

“I really like to focus on the culture – yeah, just mostly on that,” Hinzman said. “When you get onto the campus, you know this is a college town. You know that the people really love and support their athletes and that they really have a winning mentality. That they don’t make excuses, like, ‘Man, our schedule’s really tough this year, so we didn’t really do too well,’ or something like that. We feel that we’re working to get better is the answer I’m looking for – that we didn’t do a great job.

“I just love a school that’s like, ‘We’re gonna win a title this year, we’re gonna get after it, we’re gonna win the national championship,’ because I mean, that’s all you can really ask for is the hard work.”

Though he grew up rooting for Wisconsin along with his family, Hinzman insists that he isn’t destined to be a Badger. Once he’s able to get out and see all of the places that are of mutual interest, then he’ll be able to decipher which has the best cultural fit for him — whether it’s down the road or thousands of miles away.

“Yeah, it could be – the school could be Wisconsin, it could be Hawaii, it could be Syracuse – you never really know,” Hinzman said. “It just depends which school is a major fit for you. Obviously Wisconsin pulls on my heart strings a little bit because it’s our community and my family’s always been (fans), but I’m just a fan of football. It doesn’t matter – like I said, any of those places. It just matters if the culture’s right, if the academics are great and what best place fits you.”
