NFL Draft: Eagles select Jurgens 51st Overall

The first Cornhusker is off the board for the 2022 NFL Draft.

The first Husker is off the board for the 2022 NFL Draft. Center Cam Jurgens was taken in the second round with the 51st pick overall by the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s an interesting selection as the Eagles were not a team regularly mentioned as looking at Jurgens. Philly is pretty set at center with 4x First-team All-Pro Jason Kelce handling those duties. I can understand that at 34-years-old there may be some thought of moving on in the not too distant future, but all four All-Pro seasons have occurred in the last five years. There doesn’t look to be a drop-off anytime soon.

It’s a fascinating pick for a second reason in that this is the second year that Phillidephia has taken a center in the 2nd round. Last year they selected Landon Dickerson from Alabama. Dickerson was no slouch as he was the 2020 Rimmington Trophy winner, which is given to the best center in college football. Now Dickerson plays at left guard, and the selection of Jurgens may solidify his placement there.

Jurgens started every game for Nebraska last season and was one of the top centers in the Big Ten this year, being named third-team All-Big Ten by the coaches and honorable-mention All-Big Ten by the Media. He’s the highest a Husker has been selected since Prince Amukamara was taken 19th overall in the 2011 draft.

The Eagles decided against trading down from pick No. 51 overall and went with Cameron Jurgens, a center out of Nebraska.

Tony Pauline of Pro Football Network had previously reported that Jurgens could be a player to watch in the second round, and Philadelphia added more depth to the NFL’s top offensive line.

Jurgens should flourish in the Eagles’ zone-based scheme, as the athletic center was the fifth-fastest offensive lineman in the 40-yard dash with a time of 4.92 a the NFL Combine.

A former high school tight end that started three years at Nebraska, Jurgens was a Third-Team All-Big Ten coaches selection, an Honorable-Mention All-Big Ten by the media, and on the Rimington Trophy Watch List in 2021.

2022 NFL draft: Ranking the best available options for Eagles on Day 2

Ranking the best players available for the Philadelphia Eagles on Day 2 of NFL draft

The first round of the 2022 NFL draft has concluded, and Philadelphia is riding high after drafting Jordan Davis and trading for A.J. Brown.

With many of the top players off of the board and the Eagles only in possession of four picks, GM Howie Roseman could look to make several Day two moves.

Some notable impact players still available include Clemson cornerback Andrew Booth Jr. and Penn State safety Jaquan Brisker—prospects that could fill major needs for Philadelphia.

Here’s an updated ranking of the best available players for the Eagles on Day two.

10 prospects the Eagles should consider trading up for on Day 2 of NFL draft

10 prospects the Philadelphia Eagles should consider trading up for on Day 2 of the NFL draft

The Eagles love to trade back in the draft and accrue assets, but with a team capable of improving on their 9-8 record from 2021, Philadelphia should look to add the best talent immediately.

On Thursday night, Philadelphia traded up to draft defensive tackle Jordan Davis and then acquired wide receiver A.J. Brown from the Titans, costing the organization six picks.

With day two set to begin, the Eagles have a second-rounder (No. 51 overall) and third-rounder (No. 83 overall), and although the secondary will likely be addressed, there are several players at key positions worthy of trading up for.

We’ve previewed 10 players the Eagle should consider moving up for despite only having four remaining picks in the draft.

Pair of Huskers expected to be drafted on Day 2

A couple of Cornhuskers should expect to learn about their professional future tonight.

A pair of Cornhuskers should expect to hear their names called on Day 2 of tonight’s NFL Draft. Center Cam Jurgens and cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt are projected to be taken in the second or third round by NFL scouts and draft gurus. Jurgens will more than likely be the first Nebraska player off the board. At the combine, he came in at 6’3″ tall and weighed 303 pounds. The Beatrice, Nebraska native, started every game at center in 2021 and was selected third-team All-Big Ten by the conference’s coaches. According to ESPN’s draft analysis of the best available players, Jurgens was listed as the best center available, and the 31st ranked player overall.

Cam Taylor-Britt hails from Montgomery, Alabama. At the NFL combine, he stood at 5’11” tall and weighed 196 pounds. In 42 games at Nebraska, he had 96 career tackles, 2.5 sacks, 6 interceptions, and 27 passes defended. Taylor-Britt was a second-team All-Big Ten selection by both the coaches and the media in 2021. The ESPN draft trackers listed him as the fourth-best cornerback available and the 40th-best remaining player overall.

No one knows exactly what will happen tonight, but for these two proud Cornhuskers, it should be an evening they’ll remember for the rest of their lives.

Nebraska’s Cam Jurgens in crosshairs if upgrading OL includes addressing center for Cowboys

The Cowboys may be interested in a center in the draft, can Jurgens overcome his size issues and rely on his athleticism to become a star? Tyler Browning (@DiabeticTyler) takes a look at the film.

A few center options have been discussed so far, and there are still question marks around the position. Next up is Nebraska center Cam Jurgens. He put on quite the show at the scouting combine, scoring a 9.94 official score on his RAS. His measurables didn’t stack up to be the best as he was in the eight percentile for height, the 20th percentile for weight, and 41st percentile for arm length. His explosiveness however, was off the charts. A three-star sport in high school Jurgens has the nickname of “Beef Jerky” and it garnished quite the buzz at the NFL combine.

But outside of his off the field ventures, how does stand out? He earned Third-Team All-Big Ten honors, he was Nebraska Offensive Lineman of the Year for 2021 and he was Academic All-Big Ten  2019,2020, and 2021.

Trio of Huskers selected in new mock draft

Three Cornhuskers are projected to be selected in a new mock draft. But who and where??

A new mock draft from CBS Sports projects a trio of Huskers selected during the upcoming NFL draft.  The first Nebraska player off the board, Cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt, is projected to be taken with the 82nd overall pick by the Atlanta Falcons. That would slot him as a third-round selection. The Huskers haven’t had someone drafted that high since the 2016 draft when Maliek Collins and Vincent Valentine were selected in the third round. The last time Nebraska had a defensive back taken that high was in 2014 when the Saints took Stanley Jean-Baptiste.

The next player selected via this mock draft is offensive lineman Cam Jurgens who is projected to be selected with the 96th overall pick by the Denver Broncos. This is not the first time Jerkins has been projected in a mock draft going to the broncos. They need a center, and Jurgens could step in and fill that role.

Finally, the last husker selected in this mock draft is Linebacker JoJo Domann. Some “draft experts” have expressed concern about his size and have wondered if he’s big enough to play linebacker at the professional level. However, his ability to defend in the passing game could make up for that deficiency as the NFL continues to value the tight end in the middle of the field.

A name not projected but could be called on draft day is Wide Receiver, Samori Toure. Toure has seen his interest rise after a good workout at Nebraska’s pro-day. It would be a third-day selection, but it’s another name we could see when the NFL Draft takes place one week for now.

A pair of Huskers could be drafted earlier than expected

Could this offensive duo hear their names selected earlier than expected in the NFL draft?

With the NFL draft just around the corner, we’re focusing on two offensive players from the 2021 Nebraska football team that are set to make the jump to the professional level.

Of the NFL draft prospects, Cam Jurgens and Samori Toure could be the duo that is drafted higher than expected. At least that is how Pro Football Focus sees it just over a week from the draft. Jurgens ranks as the No. 93 player on their board but he could creep up to the top of day two. Toure wasn’t ranked but keep an eye out for him on day three.

Here is how PFF sees it:

What PFF Says…

Jurgens is another scout’s favorite. One source projected him for the second round.

He didn’t allow a sack in 2021 and tested extremely well, running a 4.92-second 40-yard dash (96th percentile) with a 1.71-second 10-yard split (92nd), 34-inch vertical leap (6th), 9-foot, 11-inch broad jump (100th), 4.49-second short shuttle (84th) and 7.19-second 3-cone drill (99th) at 6-foot-3, 304 pounds.

What PFF Says…

Another scout’s favorite, Toure is a Day 3 pick who could go as high as the fourth round, per a source. He has good size at 6-foot-1, 191 pounds and hit the necessary marks in his testing with a 4.48-second 40-yard dash (61st percentile) and 6.77-second three-cone drill (84th).

Toure was used in the slot and dropped just two passes on 75 targets in 2021. He caught 46 passes for 896 yards with five touchdowns, including 13 catches for 552 yards and four scores on deep balls. He earned a 99.6 deep ball grade last season.
