NFL Draft: Eagles select Jurgens 51st Overall

The first Cornhusker is off the board for the 2022 NFL Draft.

The first Husker is off the board for the 2022 NFL Draft. Center Cam Jurgens was taken in the second round with the 51st pick overall by the Philadelphia Eagles. It’s an interesting selection as the Eagles were not a team regularly mentioned as looking at Jurgens. Philly is pretty set at center with 4x First-team All-Pro Jason Kelce handling those duties. I can understand that at 34-years-old there may be some thought of moving on in the not too distant future, but all four All-Pro seasons have occurred in the last five years. There doesn’t look to be a drop-off anytime soon.

It’s a fascinating pick for a second reason in that this is the second year that Phillidephia has taken a center in the 2nd round. Last year they selected Landon Dickerson from Alabama. Dickerson was no slouch as he was the 2020 Rimmington Trophy winner, which is given to the best center in college football. Now Dickerson plays at left guard, and the selection of Jurgens may solidify his placement there.

Jurgens started every game for Nebraska last season and was one of the top centers in the Big Ten this year, being named third-team All-Big Ten by the coaches and honorable-mention All-Big Ten by the Media. He’s the highest a Husker has been selected since Prince Amukamara was taken 19th overall in the 2011 draft.
