Updated USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll sees shake-up after week 4 upsets

More than a few new teams makes the Coaches Poll

The Irish got a solid road win over North Carolina and that hopefully reflected in them getting more votes this week than last in the latest USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll. With just two votes in others last week, this week saw the coaches give Notre Dame not much more respect as they grabbed just one extra vote this week.

Multiple upsets once again happened this weekend which included No. 6 Oklahoma falling on the road to Kansas State, No. 20 Texas A&M beating No. 10 Arkansas, unranked Texas Tech besting No. 19 Texas and Middle Tennessee State shocking No. 25 Miami, FL.

Here is the updated coaches poll with last weeks ranking in parenthesis.

BYU vs Wyoming Game Preview

Why Wyoming Will Win

It’s one of the underappreciated good things in college football so far this year …

Wyoming is good.

It lost a few top players through the transfer portal, the expectations were low to quickly rebound, and all of a sudden it’s 3-1 with a great win over Air Force, a better-than-it-looked-then shootout win over Tulsa, and now the defense that’s been great so far has to prove it can hold up against the Cougars.

Wyoming’s offensive line is playing well, the turnovers have slowed after giving up three in Week 0 to Illinois, and now the team is getting a BYU team that might be slightly down after the loss to Oregon.

However …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 4

Why BYU Will Win

Wyoming isn’t doing anything that special.

It was able to hold up against the Air Force running game, and the offense did what it needed to do over the last few weeks, but it’s going to have a hard time against the Cougar offensive front.

BYU will go Illinois on the Cowboys. The Illini pounded away for 258 yards and three scores and hit the midrange throws to keep things moving. BYU might not have been able to stop Oregon, but Jaren Hall and the passing game were solid.

And …

10 Best Predictions Against the Spread

What’s Going To Happen

After dealing with Baylor and Oregon, running on Wyoming is going to seem easier.

The Cowboys really are better, and they’re not just going to get steamrolled over, but BYU will come up with a good early scoring drive and control the game from there.

As good as Wyoming QB Andrew Peasley has been, he’s not going to get the downfield throws to catch up.

The day after: Lasting thoughts on Notre Dame’s win over Cal

What are you still thinking about after the Irish’s first win this season?

First, off, I want to apologize for the lateness of this post. Kinda had an important event, my sister got married. We know all good college football fans wouldn’t ever think of doing having a fall wedding, and my sister isn’t the biggest sports fan at all.

Anyways, even though the Irish got their first win of 2022, there are plenty of thoughts that have gone through my mind over the last day and here they are.

HIGHLIGHTS: Touchdowns and big plays for the Ducks against BYU

A look at the highlights from the Oregon Ducks battle with the BYU Cougars at Autzen Stadium on Saturday.

The Oregon Ducks are off to a hot start against the No. 14 ranked BYU Cougars at Autzen Stadium on Saturday, scoring early thanks to a strong rushing game and forcing multiple three-and-outs for Kelani Sitake’s offense.

Dan Lanning no doubt wants a commanding victory, one that will quiet the doubters who showed up in droves after Oregon’s catastrophic first game against Georgia in Week 1.

A win over BYU, who defeated Baylor without their top two wide receivers last week, would be a huge boost for this program, and puts them back into the conversation for a Pac-12 title and/or a spot in the college football playoff if things go their way for the rest of the season.

Are you away from a TV and looking to see all of the highlights from the game? We have got you covered. Here is everything you need to see, updated throughout the game.

ESPN’s College GameDay picks their Week 3 winners including Notre Dame vs. Cal

Who do you have winning?

For the first time in College GameDay’s twenty year history, they visited Boone, North Carolina, home of giant slayer Appalachian State. After the Mountaineers took North Carolina to the brink in week one, they successfully garnered a massive upset in week two, going to College Station and defeating Texas A&M.  The GameDay crew (Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, Desmond Howard, and Pat McAfee) along with guest picker country singer Luke Combs, made their selections for week three’s slate. Find out below who they chose to win.

BYU vs Oregon Game Preview

Why BYU Will Win

There’s no special magic to what BYU is doing with its wins over USF and Baylor to start the season. The offensive line is solid, the defensive line has been great, there’s only been one turnover, there aren’t a ton of penalties, and the team just keeps on moving.

The passing attack was sharp against USF, the team got creative against the Bears, and overall the run defense has been able to get the job done.

Long thing short, the team’s infrastructure is so strong that the team is able to overcome a slew of issues and concerns, like injuries at receiver.

Oregon’s defense has a ton of talent, but it’s been bad on third downs – Georgia hit nine of its ten chances – and even in the 70-14 win over Eastern Washington, the D wasn’t a rock.

BYU has to control the clock and needs to maintain its own tempo, but …

CFN Expert Picks, Week 3

Why Oregon Will Win

BYU might be 2-0, and it might have beaten the defending Big 12 champion, but it hasn’t played nearly as well as it should be.

There aren’t enough plays behind the line, the D isn’t generating takeaways, and the offense isn’t taking advantage of all of its opportunities.

Oregon might be struggling defensively on third downs, but the offense got it back against Eastern Washington. The running game wasn’t all that awful against Georgia – the game got out of hand – and now comes the balance.

Baylor wasn’t able to get anything going down the field against the Cougars, and it didn’t have any room to move on the ground. The Oregon O might not be explosive in this, but it should be able to methodically keep things moving.

Week 3 Schedule, Predictions, Game Preview

What’s Going To Happen

To keep hammering this point, both teams are good, but they could and should be playing better.

This will be the Oregon defense stepping up to show just how good it can be.

BYU will come up with the power for the ground game, but it will have to get the downfield passing game going more and it won’t be able to.

This will be a tough, tight fight throughout, but Oregon will finally start to pull away a bit with a power ground game of its own.

It won’t be pretty, and the stats might not be great, but the Ducks will take it.

Top college football games to watch this weekend

The 3-0 North Carolina Tar Heels are on a bye week, so we take a good look at some college football games you should be checking out this weekend.

The North Carolina Tar Heels are in their bye week, preparing to take on the Fighting Irish next weekend.

UNC has got off to a great start with no losses on their record, yet has not cracked the Associated Press top 25. North Carolina opponents faced, and the small margin of victory could pinpoint the lack of respect for being ranked.

Despite UNCs’ 63-61 nail-biting week one win over Appalachian State, the Mountaineers still finished with more votes to be considered in the top 25 heading into week three. It’s simple if North Carolina is to get any consideration for the top 25… some big teams will have to fall. Others they have already beaten will need to remain impressive.

This is a weekend that UNC can crack the AP poll even without lacing up by simply watching the other teams take each other out. As North Carolina enjoys a stress-free weekend, we look at some of the best games this weekend that can bring out the sweat buckets and shake up the AP polls.

3 keys to victory for No. 24 Oregon Ducks against No. 14 BYU Cougars

The Oregon Ducks have a chance to move to 2-0 at home with a victory over No. 14 BYU on Saturday. Here are three keys to victory.

The Oregon Ducks and BYU Cougars will face off in a nonconference top-25 matchup between two of the best in the west.

Oregon coach Dan Lanning will hope the team that shows up at Autzen Stadium looks more like the version that played Eastern Washington last week and not the team that had its bell rung by Georgia in Week 1.

BYU represents an extremely difficult opponent. It is ranked 14th as it plays its final season before joining the Big 12 conference in 2023.

For Oregon to pull off a victory and begin the process of rebuilding faith in the new staff and new personnel, here are three keys they’ll need to take care of between the lines on Saturday:

Defensive Line Needs to Step Up

Mandatory Credit: Troy Wayrynen-USA TODAY Sports

BYU left tackle Blake Freeland is a potential first-round pick. Alongside Clark Barrington and former Oregon lineman Kingsley Suamataia, all three stand 6 foot, 6 inches or taller and offer elite levels of production for quarterback Jaren Hall.

If the Ducks cannot generate an effective pass rush, something they struggled mightily to do against Georgia in Week 1, the Cougars will have no problem marching up and down the field, using up clock and scoring a lot of points.

All that is a recipe of a home loss, and folks such as Brandon Dorlus will need to have their best game of the season if they want to keep BYU from doing whatever it wants offensively.

THE WEEKEND: Three teams fall out of top ten in new Kendall’s 15 rankings

In this week’s edition of “The Weekend” Kendall Hilton recaps the wild week two of College Football, and it’s many upsets.

What a fun weekend it was.

We saw a great battle in Austin, Bryce Young having his first Heisman moment of the season, but the biggest story is three teams in the AP top ten, two of them losing to unranked opponents.

Notre Dame took a horrible loss to Marshall in South Bend, the first 0-2 start since 2011, putting newly hired head coach Marcus Freeman under fire.

If you remember, in the first set of rankings last week, I said I wasn’t sold on the Bears after their big win against Albany, and look what happened…

And the worst loss goes to Texas A&M losing at home to Appalachian State. The Aggies had a lot of expectations coming into this season, and in week one, I saw a team that didn’t resemble a championship.

So who were the ones to replace the teams to drop out of the top ten, let’s find out.

Notre Dame tumbles out of latest USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll

It gets worse

The Irish didn’t draw it up like this and it reflected in the latest USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll. Everyone associated with Notre Dame would like to hit the restart button on the season, especially head coach Marcus Freeman. As Nick Shepkowski so eloquently up it, the honeymoon is over.

The Irish weren’t the only other team that would fall on what could be deemed “upset Saturday” in college football. Sixth ranked Texas A&M lost to unranked Appalachian State at home, No. 8 Baylor lost to No. 25 Baylor on the road, No. 20 Kentucky defeated No. 19 Florida in Gainesville, unranked Tennessee also went on the road and defeated No. 14 Pittsburgh, and No. 18 Wisconsin lost at home to unranked Washington State.

Find out below where each team is ranked after the chaotic second weekend of college football. (Last week’s ranking in parenthesis.)
