Broncos select DL Byron Murphy in 2024 NFL mock draft

A new NFL mock draft from the league’s official website has the Broncos selecting Texas defensive lineman Byron Murphy with the 12th pick.

In his latest 2024 NFL mock draft, NFL.com’s Eric Edholm has the Denver Broncos beefing up the defensive line in the first round.

At No. 12 overall, the Broncos select Texas defensive lineman Byron Murphy II, who is considered one of the best defensive tackles in the 2024 class.

“I know many will pine for a quarterback, but I think the Broncos will be hard-pressed to land a worthy talent at the position in this lofty draft slot,” Edholm wrote on NFL.com. “Instead, they could pivot to upgrading the interior D-line with an explosive penetrator such as Murphy, even if this feels a tad high for him.”

Murphy (6-1, 297 pounds) totaled 70 tackles (15 behind the line) and eight sacks in three seasons (34 games) with the Longhorns. With Mike Purcell and Jonathan Harris scheduled to become free agents and D.J. Jones facing an uncertain future in Denver, the Broncos could certainly use reinforcements on the defensive line.

As in the case in many mocks, Edholm’s projection has the top three quarterbacks going off the board right away — Caleb Williams at No. 1, Drake Maye at No. 2 and Jayden Daniels at No. 3.

Denver passes on QB J.J. McCarthy (No. 19) to select Murphy. Edholm has QBs Bo Nix and Michael Penix Jr. falling out of the first round in his mock.

Several Longhorns rank Top 10 in Kiper’s NFL draft position rankings

Multiple Texas players are Top 10 draft picks at their position according to Mel Kiper.

The Texas Longhorns are set up to have one of their best draft classes for the 2024 NFL draft. The Texas class is deep and spans across several positions.

NFL draft scout and analyst Mel Kiper released his Big Board complete with Top 10 rankings for every position. The Longhorns were well represented on the list.

It takes several great players to make a College Football Playoff, so it probably comes as little to no surprise to outsiders that the veteran laden team has several draft eligible players. Last offseason Texas sent running back Bijan Robinson to the Top 10 draft picks. Another strong draft this year will make criticisms over Texas development rate lack credibility.

Here’s a look at Longhorns ranked toward the top of their positions.

Byron Murphy, Cooper Beebe among top prospects no longer at the Senior Bowl

Cooper Beebe and Byron Murphy headline several 2024 NFL draft prospects no longer competing at the Senior Bowl despite accepting invitations

There will be a little less star power on display at the 2024 Senior Bowl. A few of the more prominent prospects who were listed on the initial roster release are not on the latest update.

Two of the most notable are perhaps the most likely players originally slated to appear to be selected in the first round. Kansas State offensive lineman Cooper Beebe and Texas defensive tackle Byron Murphy will not participate. Others who are no longer set up to practice or play in Saturday’s Senior Bowl game include Washington OL Troy Fautanu, Michigan cornerback Mike Sainristil and Georgia center Sedrick Van Pran.

It’s customary for a few prospects to decide not to participate, and there are various reasons why — from medical issues to advice from agents. None of the reasons are known yet with this group, but they are no longer listed on the rosters distributed here in Mobile.

With practices beginning on Tuesday, there are unlikely to be any further changes

Seahawks trade down twice, go Washington heavy in this mock draft

Here’s how the full seven-round mock played out.

Mel Kiper released his first mock draft of the 2024 season yesterday. At No. 16 overall he had the Seahawks selecting Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy. We have no beef with the prospect, but didn’t like the pick. We always say if you don’t like our mock, make your own – so that’s the spirit were bringing into today. We feel that if this team is going to take a quarterback early, they should either trade up for one of the elite QB prospects or trade back down to the top of the second to poach one of the fruits that fall out of the first.

That’s exactly what we did in our latest seven-round mock draft, trading down from the No. 16 spot and getting a bonanza of picks in return to build up the roster. Here’s how the full seven-round mock played out.
