Instant analysis: Bills offense dominant in sweep of Dolphins

The Buffalo Bills got back on the right side of the win column with a convincing 37-20 win Sunday against the Miami Dolphins.

The Buffalo Bills got back on the right side of the win column with a convincing 37-20 win Sunday against the Miami Dolphins. The Bills allowed Miami to stay within a reasonable distance throughout the afternoon but in reality, the game was in Buffalo’s grasp all day.

It was a solid day for Josh Allen, who just seems to thrive when facing Miami. He accounted for four touchdowns on the day–three through the air and one on the ground.

Each of the aerial scores were impressive plays. John Brown found a space along the sideline against the Dolphins’ cover-two defense and beat the safety for a 40-yard touchdown reception. Dawson Knox displayed his power on a 23-yard touchdown reception, breaking a tackle and rumbling between the center of the field to score on a play where the Dolphins sent an all-out blitz.

To seal the deal, Allen rolled to his right and found Brown for a nine-yard touchdown early in the fourth quarter to give the Bills a three-score lead in the final frame.

Allen ended the day 21-of-33 for 256 yards through the air. He also added 57 yards on the ground prior to the team’s victory formation.

John Brown was the big winner out wide, as he led the Bills with 137 yards receiving on nine catches. He found space all afternoon in Miami’s secondary, and Allen was decisive in getting the ball in his wideouts hands.

Buffalo’s brass made a concerted effort to get the ball in the hands of Devin Singletary. The rookie shouldered the load throughout the game and helped close out the game in the fourth quarter. Singletary ran 15 times for 75 rushing yards. It’s apparent that he will be the focal point of Buffalo’s ground attack going forward. He did fumble twice, but the Bills recovered both miscues. Still, it’s something that the Florida Atlantic product will need to clean up going forward.

Defensively, Buffalo was in Fitzpatrick’s face all afternoon. The Bills tallied seven sacks. Shaq Lawson, Jordan Phillips, Ed Oliver, Star Lotulelei, Jerry Hughes, and Corey Liuget registered sacks, while Matt Milano and Tremaine Edmunds split a sack.

Outside of a Devante Parker 50-yard reception, the Dolphins did not produce much on offense. Miami put up some numbers in the fourth quarter after the game was in hand, so the 323 yards allowed through the air is a bit deceiving

Parker ended up with a nice stat line, but he, along with Miami, had little to show for it. Parker reeled in seven catches for 135 yards on the day.

The Bills run defense, which was gouged the past few weeks, made progress this week. Buffalo finished with nine tackles for loss on the day, allowing only 23 yards on the ground.

Buffalo benefited from Maimi’s mistakes. The Dolphins were guilty for six accepted penalties, thwarting progress on several occasions. In addition, wide receiver Allen Hurns fumbled a reception on his own, which Jordan Poyer recovered.

The only concern on the day was the special teams unit. Jakeem Grant ran a kickoff back 101 yards at the end of the first half, a play that he outran the entire coverage unit moving from left to right. There were several players on the Bills unit who were merely diving at air. Grant would average 39.6 yards per kick return.

The unit was out-smarted on an onside kick, one in which Miami kicker Jason Sanders recovered a ground kick by himself.

While the coverage units left a little bit to be desired, the Bills had a sign of relief as Stephen Hauschka returned to form, connecting on all three of his field goal attempts in addition to four successful extra-point tries.

This was the type of game that Buffalo needed. They were the superior team on paper, and they showed it on the field. The Bills’ offensive and defensive units played an ideal game. Buffalo looks to build upon this victory next week, as they take on the Denver Broncos Sunday at New Era Field.

5 takeaways from the Bills’ 37-20 win over the Dolphins

Five takeaways from the Buffalo Bills’ win over the Miami Dolphins in Week 11.

There were some concerns for the Buffalo Bills heading into their Week 11 meeting with the Miami Dolphins.

The Dolphins entered the game on a two-game winning streak. Could the Bills make that three? Turns out, the answer is now as the Bills topped the Dolphins 37-20, earning a 7-3 record in the process with the win.

With that, here are five takeaways from the Bills’ win over the Dolphins:

Stephen Hauschka is back

To keep Stephen Hauschka or not keep Stephen Hauschka? That has been the question for the Bills. In Week 10, Hauschka cost the Bills. First he missed an easy kick from 34 yards in the first half against the Browns in an eventual 19-16 loss. Then the more glaring miss was a wide kick on a potential game-tying kick, but it was a hard one. It was from 53 yards. However, Hauschka missed five-straight kicks from 50-plus yards. It had started to become a concern.

Hauschka put any concerns to rest against Miami. He converted on three kicks against Miami, including his first, from 51. Hauschka also hit from 34 and 21 yards in the win. He said all week he needed to maintain his composure heading into his team’s meeting with the Dolphins after an off-week, and he certainly did.

Bills impose will on undermanned Dolphins, win 37-20

The Buffalo Bills ran roughshod through the Miami Dolphins defense in Week 11, cruising to victory and dropping the Dolphins to 2-8.

The first time the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills played this season, the Dolphins were able to physically dictate the pace of much of the game. This time around? No such luck — the Buffalo Bills physically dominated the Dolphins on both sides of the football, cruising to a 37-20 victory in Week 11 of the NFL season and moving their record to 7-3. That mark will place Buffalo comfortably in control of the AFC Conference’s first wild card position.

Miami’s first loss in November serves as a sobering reminder of how far this football team is away from being competitive — Miami now sits at 2-8. The Bills brought ferocious pass rush all day, constantly collapsing the pocket around QB Ryan Fitzpatrick to the tune of seven sacks and rarely giving Fitzpatrick the time to set up in the pocket and survey the field.

The complete lack of a running threat made life a lot more difficult for the Dolphins, as RB Kalen Ballage once again stumbled in his role as the Dolphins’ lead back — the rushing offense only showing life when Ballage aligned behind the center in the wildcat formation inside the red zone.

Between all of that mess offensively and a brutal game of musical chairs in the secondary, Miami stood little chance to keep pace. Miami saw FS Bobby McCain helped to the sideline on more than one occasion and CB Nik Needham was also assisted off the field at one point. Between those dings and the absence of two defensive backs on the inactive list, Bills QB Josh Allen enjoyed a career game with 4 total touchdowns and over 250 passing yards — continuing his dominance against Miami in his young career.

Special teams kept the Dolphins alive, particularly with a successful onside kick and a kick return for a touchdown by WR Jakeem Grant. But even the progress on special teams was watered down by several penalties on returns. The penalties were a big problem all around — an uncharacteristically sloppy effort from Miami all around.

The Dolphins hits the road next week to take on a desperate 4-6 Cleveland Browns team, so the schedule won’t get much easier as the Dolphins look to reignite the momentum they showed earlier in November.

WATCH: Bills’ Ed Oliver gets first sack on QB

Ed Oliver sack video on Ryan Fitzpatrick.

So far in his brief NFL career, defensive lineman Ed Oliver only has two sacks. Both have come against the Miami Dolphins.

But finally in Week 11, the rookie notched his first sack… against a quarterback.

In Buffalo’s first meeting with the Dolphins this year, Oliver’s first sack came against wide receiver Albert Wilson on a trick play. On Sunday, he finally pulled a QB down and it was Ryan Fitzpatrick, nonetheless.

Check out Oliver’s first quarterback sack here:

Rob Gronkowski explains how he dominated Bills during career

New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski discusses playing the Buffalo Bills during his career.

Former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski is a Buffalo native, but was very much disliked around his hometown during his playing career.

A bit of a cheap shot on Tre’Davious White doesn’t help, neither did his complete domination of the Bills during his career. His numbers are ridiculous against Buffalo.

In 15 career games, Gronkowski had 69 career catches for 1,070 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Now retired, Gronk recently joined FOX Sports as an analyst. During his pregame analysis on Sunday ahead of Week 11’s 1 p.m. games, Gronkowski was talking about the Bills and specifically his playing career.

Gronkowski knows he dominated the Bills and said because they were his hometown team, that’s exactly what fueled him to do so.

“Every time I played the Buffalo Bills, I loved dominating them. I felt like I dominated them because I felt like a child going out there against the Bills. I grew up in Buffalo,” Gronkowski said.

“The more they try to hate me in Buffalo, the more I enjoyed playing there, That’s what made it so great, when you felt like that. When you have that mental edge, it’s like nothing can stop you and you’re unstoppable and invincible out there on the field,” Gronkowski added.

While Bills fans might not like hearing this, they should. It’s much better to hear than to see Gronk continue doing it, right?

Miami Dolphins inactives for Week 11 vs. the Bills

The Miami Dolphins are a little over an hour from kickoff, and we now know which Dolphins on the 53-man roster will not be suiting up for today’s game.

The Miami Dolphins are a little less than an hour from kickoff, and we now know which Dolphins on the 53-man roster will not be suiting up for today’s game. The Dolphins shared the inactives list just moments ago.

The inactives this week will hit hard for Miami’s defense — losing LB Raekwon McMillan and DE Taco Charlton this week are significant blows to Miami’s upset bid against the Bills. Both players aren’t blindside decisions, as each was limited all throughout the course of this week of practice and were noted on the team’s final injury report of the week.

But there was still optimism that each was not outright ruled out for the game — though that is ultimately the case. Miami’s secondary will also be tested without Ken Webster and Xavier Crawford — look for a lot of snaps for the rest of Miami’s defensive backs. That, of course, includes safety Reshad Jones, who finally returns this week after an extended absence from the field.

Jones will need to be a big presence to make up for losses elsewhere on the Dolphins defense today against the Bills.

Report: Bills did not attend Colin Kaepernick’s workout in Atlanta

The Buffalo Bills were not one of eight teams to attend Colin Kaepernick’s weekend workout in Atlanta.

The Buffalo Bills were not one of eight teams to attend Colin Kaepernick’s weekend workout in Atlanta, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Schefter initially reported that the Bills were one of the eight teams to attend, later retracting the report through a tweet.

Kaepernick, a 32-year-old quarterback who last played in the NFL in 2016, held his own workout for scouts late Saturday afternoon. The NFL had initially organized the workout for the signal-caller, but Kaepernick instead opted to hold his own workout at an alternate location, a way to make the event open to media and fans.

Over 24 teams were initially slated to attend Kaepernick’s workout, but just eight ultimately sent representatives after the workout was moved from the Atlanta Falcons’ training facility to a high school south of Atlanta.

Kaepernick’s three-year absence from the NFL has been a tumultuous saga of controversy. The former NFC Championship-winning quarterback went unsigned in the 2017 offseason, this after sparking a national debate by kneeling during the singing of the national anthem throughout the 2016 season.

The veteran felt as though the league made a concerted effort to keep him unsigned, prompting him to issue a ‘collusion grievance‘ against the NFL in August 2017. The case was settled in February 2019.

Kaepernick is “an unrestricted free agent eligible to sign with any club,” per the NFL.

ESPN tabs Josh Allen 2nd best 2018 QB

Josh Allen is ranked as the second-best quarterback from the 2018 draft according to ESPN’s Matt Bowen.

The Buffalo Bills Josh Allen may have been the third quarterback who heard his name called at the 2018 draft. However, he’s moved up a spot in the position, according to ESPN.

ESPN currently ranks Allen as No. 2 on his list of quarterbacks from 2018 cohort, settling in behind Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson.

Comparison of quarterbacks drafted in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft through November 15, 2019, via Pro Football Reference.

According to ESPN there isn’t much to differentiate between the middle portion of the grouping behind the electric Jackson.

Here’s how ESPN explains that middle grouping:

“Let’s be honest here – Nos. 2-4 on this list are extremely close, and it’s not because they’ve all been excellent. After a season’s worth of starts, Allen, Mayfield and Darnold all have major issues and rank near the bottom of the league in multiple statistical categories. But this is my ranking, and I have Allen just barely ahead of Mayfield because of his development in a Bills system that has highlighted his natural tools.”

While several pundits have questioned the offensive identity for Buffalo’s unit, ESPNfeels the staff has done well with Allen, adding “the Buffalo coaching staff continues to put the former No. 7 overall pick in favorable positions that cater to both his arm talent and movement skills.” In addition to his arm, Allen has been lethal in the run game, leading this group with 14 rushing touchdowns to date.

He’s also the best among these quarterbacks with respect to QBR in the red zone.

ESPN also tabbed Allen’s arm strength as his best trait. Allen is completing 64.4-percent of his passes traveling 10-20 yard range, which ranks seventh in the NFL.

Allen, while still a work in progress, is inching his way up the rankings among his contemporaries. Being No. 2 is not a bad thing at this point and his play could get even better.

Three bold predictions for Dolphins’ Week 11 contest vs. Bills

What happens when the Bills and Dolphins take the field today? What kind of unexpected might we expect?

The Dolphins enter Week 11 as a 2-7 football team, which typically indicates a rough season with little optimism. But this isn’t your typical 2-7 football team — these Miami Dolphins are riding a two-game win streak entering Week 11 against the Buffalo Bills. And the Bills? The Bills were embarrassed by the Cleveland Browns last week in poor showing all around, which dropped the team to 6-3.

The last showing between these two teams featured 52 points in a 31-21 victory for the Bills in Orchard Park — but the Dolphins dictated the pace of the game for the first 40 minutes of game action. What twists and turns will the game bring us this week? Here are three bold predictions for the Dolphins’ home showdown with the Bills.

Dolphins sack Bills QB Josh Allen four times

Four sacks would be a season high. Miami totaled 5 sacks through the team’s first 5 games — and has tallied 8 in the four games since. That progression? It’s pretty promising. And the Dolphins have found success in dialing up their exotic blitz packages to create confusion for opposing teams. Miami will bring the heat on Josh Allen — and after getting him twice last time these two teams played, the Dolphins will get home more this time around.

The Dolphins have no turnovers

Miami last accomplished this feat two weeks ago against the Jets — but it is the only time this season the Dolphins have protected the football for 60 minutes. The Dolphins finished 5 games in 2018 without a turnover — for a little bit of context here.

But Miami’s point of emphasis coming into this game has to be the fact that Miami had the Bills where they wanted them last time until turnovers did them in. The end result? Extra focus on ball security to give the Dolphins the best chance possible to win the game.

Kalen Ballage breaks a 20+ yard run

This may not be the most bold prediction in the book — but Ballage could really use a big play to hopefully kickstart his play. Ballage was fed 20 carries last week against the Colts and totaled 43 rushing yards, he needs to start creating some missed tackles and getting extra yards out of his runs.

A downhill run directly at the Bills’ defense could produce some nice results, especially considering how much success the Dolphins had running the ball on the Bills the last time out. Look for Ballage to break a big gain and have more room to work today against the Bills.
