LeBron triple-double paces Lakers to beat Nets in Brooklyn

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James had 27 points, 12 rebounds, and 10 assists in a win over the Brooklyn Nets.

With 27 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists, LeBron James pushed the Los Angeles Lakers to a dominant 128-113 win over the Brooklyn Nets on Thursday night. The Lakers scored 75 points in the first half but they played much better defense in the second half to pull out the road win.

With the win, the Lakers still only have one loss this season against teams below-.500. In addition to the big game for LeBron, Anthony Davis had 16 points and 10 rebounds on the same night that he was also chosen as an All-Star starter.

In a spot-start for JaVale McGee, who missed with flu-like symptoms, Dwight Howard was a monster in the middle. Howard had 14 points and 12 rebounds in just 23 minutes of action, as well as two steals and a block.

For the Nets, Kyrie Irving led the team in scoring with 20 points but he had a tough night shooting the ball, going seven for 17 from the field.

Anthony Davis makes ridiculous half-court shot that didn’t count

It didn’t count, but the Los Angeles Lakers All-Star big man had quite the impressive feat of athleticism on Thursday night in Brooklyn.

The Los Angeles Lakers had one of their most prolific halves of scoring on Thursday night when they visited Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets. They made 11 3-pointers in the first period and scored 75 points in the first half alone, but it was a shot that didn’t count that was perhaps the most impressive moment of the game.

Anthony Davis, who was one of the few Lakers to struggle from the field with his shot in the first half and was questionable leading into the game, converted a ridiculous half-court shot after being fouled by Caris LeVert. The shot was waved off as the foul was ruled a take foul, but the video and the shot can never be erased.

The Lakers currently lead 88-75 early in the third quarter of their game against the Nets. The Lakers are looking to improve to 3-1 on their current road trip before wrapping things up in Philadelphia against Ben Simmons and the 76ers. The Lakers already have five different players who have scored in double-figures.

The Nets and the Lakers squared off twice in the preseason with Brooklyn sweeping both contests. That was nearly three months ago and October basketball isn’t exactly an indication of where teams will be in January, February or even June. What we do know early on this season is that the Nets are struggling to find wins, while the Lakers look like a championship-caliber team.

LeBron James and Kyrie Irving have a history from their days on the Cavaliers, in which they won a championship. For the first time this season, the two will square-off on the hardwood. Kyrie did not play in Monday night’s 117-111 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, with the team opting to have him rest a tight hamstring. The Nets are currently in eighth place in the Eastern Conference with an 18-24 record and have some internal turmoil with Irving making comments about the team “missing pieces”. They will need Irving to step up and those missing pieces to show up Thursday night if they want to avoid dropping their fifth consecutive game.

While the Nets are struggling against the competition, LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and the Lakers have looked like a true contender for yet another NBA Championship in franchise history. The Lakers first in the Western Conference, but had a rough 139-107 loss to the Celtics and are in the midst of a five-game road trip. Davis leads the team in both points (26.6 per game) and rebounds (9.3), while James is averaging 25.2 points per game and a team-leading 11 assists.

Nets G Kyrie Irving available to play Thursday night vs. Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers will get their first regular season look at Kyrie Irving in a Brooklyn Nets uniform when they visit Barclay’s Center.

The Brooklyn Nets will get some more offensive firepower on Thursday night and a player who knows their opponent very well as guard Kyrie Irving is available to play tonight against LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers, according to ESPN’s Malika Andrews.

Irving missed Brooklyn’s last game, Jan. 20 against the Philadelphia 76ers, with a hamstring issue. Irving’s numbers have been solid in the games in which he has played, averaging over 26 points, nearly seven assists and over five rebounds per game. However, for whatever reason, wins have not followed when Irving has played so far this season. The Nets are 5-10 in the 15 games in which Irving has played while going 13-14 in the 27 games he has missed.

Irving has missed much of the season with a shoulder injury before the recent hamstring issue, that appears to have been shortlived. Give that it’s a game against LeBron, we should be in for a pretty good Kyrie performance tonight.

Thursday is the first meeting between the Lakers and Nets since they played two preseason games in China back in October.

Meanwhile, on the Lakers side, Anthony Davis is questionable for tonight in Brooklyn.

Report: Anthony Davis questionable for game against Brooklyn Nets

Lakers star Anthony Davis might not be in the lineup Thursday as the team takes on the Brooklyn Nets.

Los Angeles Lakers star Anthony Davis has played two games since returning from a bruised tailbone, but he might not be in the lineup Thursday for the second game of the team’s back-to-back.

According to ESPN’s Dave McMenamin, Davis is listed as questionable for the Lakers’ game against the Brooklyn Nets. If he plays, this will mark the first back-to-back Davis has played in since bruising his tailbone.

Per McMenamin, Rajon Rondo (fractured right ring finger) and Kyle Kuzma (sore left ankle) are both probable. Tip off is set for 8 p.m. EST. in Brooklyn.

Davis scored a team-high 28 points, grabbed five rebounds and had five assists during the Lakers’ win Wednesday against the New York Knicks.

According to Basketball Reference, the performance marked the seventh time this season that Davis scored at least 20 points and tallied at least five rebounds and five assists.

As the Lakers’ leading scorer, Davis has shown more of how his versatile game can positively affect a team. This season, Davis is a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, and his length and quickness helps him guard multiple positions. He ranks third in the NBA in blocks per game (2.5).

Lakers look to sweep NYC back-to-back as they visit Brooklyn Nets

LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers handled their business against the Knicks last night before.

The Los Angeles Lakers are still in the Big Apple but they are switching boroughs this evening as they cross the Brooklyn Bridge to face off against LeBron’s former running mate Kyrie Irving and the Brooklyn Nets.

The Nets are having a weird year and no, it’s not just the grey court they decide to play many home games on. It probably should have been expected this season, with Kevin Durant out for the year recovering and the Nets adding the mercurial Irving to what had been a collegiate atmosphere for a few years.

And the Irving experience, including missing over 25 games this, got even a weirder last week when he discussed the growth the Nets have to make to be a championship contender. He named some of his teammates, but not all of them. The world of Kyrie is always interesting and even with the Nets scrapping at the bottom of the East playoff picture, it’s as compelling as always.

Irving, as well as L.A. native Spencer Dinwiddie, are the players to watch for the Nets on the perimeter. Also, the last time these two teams met in Brooklyn, Jarrett Allen got one of the greatest blocks we’ve ever seen against LeBron James.

The Nets aren’t very good, but they aren’t that bad either. On the second night of a back to back in the city that never sleeps, the Lakers can’t afford to get off to a slow start like they did earlier this week in Boston.

Prediction

Lakers 114, Nets 106

Moneyline (ML)

Despite a record of 35-9 this season, the LAKERS (-239) are just modest favorites over the Nets (+195) Thursday night. While the Lakers played Wednesday night against the New York Knicks, the team is fully healthy entering this contest.

The same can’t be said for the Nets, who are dealing with multiple injuries at the center position. It might not be the prettiest of wins for the Lakers, but expect them to edge out the Nets at Barclay Center.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The LAKERS (-4.5, -128) come into this game as two-basket favorites. While the Lakers have done well against the spread this season, the Nets have not. They have failed to cover the spread in 11 of their last 13 games and are just 18-24 ATS this season. Expect the Nets to keep this one close for a while, but for the Lakers to ultimately cover the spread and win by at least 5 points in Brooklyn.

Over/Under (O/U)

The total for this matchup is set at 229.5, which feels too high considering the Lakers’ defensive ability. When they want to, the Lakers can be one of the best defensive teams in the NBA. The Nets also have just a mediocre offense this season, averaging only 109.3 points per game. Expect both teams to score around 110 points, but for the UNDER 229.5 (-115) to hit Thursday night.

Denver has the best home-court advantage in the NBA; Brooklyn the worst

Any competitive advantage in an NBA season is important whether it is home cooking or the comfort and familiarity of your own locker room.

Any competitive advantage in an NBA season is important whether it is home cooking or the comfort and familiarity of your own locker room.

For this study, we subtracted the difference from the team winning percentage on the road from their winning percentage at home. This illustrates, in part, the impact of playing in their own city has had on franchises around the league. We looked at all games played since the Basketball Association of America merged with the NBA in 1946-47.

Note that all numbers included below for teams are based on their records when playing in their current cities. That means that Golden State Warriors accounts for San Francisco both now and in the 1960s (not Oakland) while the Nets are in Brooklyn (not New Jersey), the Grizzlies are in Memphis (not Vancouver), the Jazz are in Salt Lake City (not New Orleans), etc.

Overall, this research helps show how much better a team has historically played depending on the location of the game.

Perhaps the most obvious takeaway is that the two NBA cities with the highest elevations (Denver and Utah) both rank in the Top 3. In fact, the Nuggets have won nearly twice as many games when they have played at home compared to their road appearances.

Back in 2013, Neil Payne contextualized the geographical advantages for these games (via ESPN):

“One explanation for this phenomenon is that Denver and Salt Lake City are, at 5,883 feet and 4,227 feet, respectively, the two highest-altitude cities in the entire NBA by far. (Ranking third in elevation is Phoenix at a paltry 1,132 feet.) Certainly, this is a major factor – the relatively thin air at such high elevations causes the players’ bodies to have less oxygen available for circulation to their muscles, resulting in quicker fatigue. Denver and Utah players seem to acclimate to this, offering them a presumed advantage.”

The aforementioned advantage is so distinct that in 2015, the league made an effort to schedule the Nuggets as the first stop on a trip from the east or put a day of rest in between games for teams coming from the west.

Another interesting takeaway is that cities that are known for a more vibrant nightlife (Miami, Los Angeles and New York) all fall fairly low on this list. It is common to hear “Los Angeles nightlife is undefeated” or the “South Beach Flu” after the Heat or the Lakers win a game at home. But the win-loss totals indicate that visiting teams may not be as impacted as many thought.

For further proof, Sports Insights NBA expert Carl Sack told The Action Network’s Matt Moore in 2018 that his data also indicated a regression to the mean rather than anything particularly noteworthy about party cities.

One final note is that the teams that have played the fewest total games at home (Oklahoma City Thunder, Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors) fared the worst for these rankings.

These three teams rank in the Bottom 4 for home games based on sheer volume and newness in their home arenas. Whether it’s based on earning loyalty from the fans or something deeper, it was particularly interesting to see some kind of correlation even if there is no causation.

Kobe Bryant on LeBron James soon passing him on All-Time scoring list: ‘I think it’s awesome’

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James is only 65 points away from passing Kobe Bryant for third on the NBA’s All-Time scoring list.

Although LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers suffered their largest margin of defeat this season on Monday night at the hands of the Boston Celtics, James inched a little closer to passing Kobe Bryant for No. 3 on the NBA’s All-Time scoring list with 15 points.

James now is 66 points away from surpassing Kobe and there’s a very good chance James could do it on Saturday when the Lakers face-off against the Philadelphia 76ers in Kobe’s hometown. With James likely to pass Bryant in the next three games, The Athletic’s Bill Oram got comments from Kobe about what it will be like once LeBron passes him.

“It’s great,” Bryant said. “I think it’s great for him. I mean, the amount of work he’s put in over his career, consistency, I think it’s awesome.”

During last season that was mostly a moot point, LeBron passed Michael Jordan for fourth on the All-Time scoring list in a mostly meaningless game. This season, with the Lakers thriving and in the midst of an important East Coast road trip in cities with rich basketball traditions, New York and Philadelphia, the circumstances for this latest milestone for LeBron can finally match the moment.

Prediction

76ers 103, Nets 98

Moneyline (ML)

The first meeting between the 76ers and Nets occurred just five days ago, and the 76ers prevailed 117-106 behind a plus-15-point fourth-quarter margin.  Expect a similar outcome Monday due to several matchup edges the Sixers hold over the Nets. Brooklyn has been subpar offensively this season—ranked 20th in points per game, 24th in field-goal percentage, 25th in effective FG% and 28th in 3-point percentage—while the 76ers are elite defensively. Philadelphia is ranked second in opponent points per game and defensive rebound percentage, and ninth in opponent field-goal percentage.

The most important (healthy) 76ers player, Ben Simmons, should have success. Simmons needs to be aggressive with no Embiid in the lineup, and he’s had back-to-back 20-point games and averages .602 FG% against in his career.

BET 76ERS (+115). New to sports betting? Bet $100 on the 76ers to win outright to earn a profit of $115.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

PASS on the line because we are on the 76ers to win outright in a low-key primetime spot on MLK day, and there’s no point of investing in the tiny line of 76ers +1.5 (+105). If this were a standard regular-season game, maybe the Nets catch them napping, but that’s not happening with the 76ers as the current sixth seed in the Eastern Conference and without a hobbled Embiid.

Furthermore, Philly is 5-1 against the spread and straight up in its last six games against Brooklyn, including a 4-1 series win in the first round of the 2018-19 NBA playoffs.

Over/Under (O/U)

Both teams have poor offensive ratings—76ers are ranked 20th and the Nets are 25th, but the main reasons to bet the UNDER 222.5 (-125) are the Under-friendly trends; 76ers have a 9-13 Over/Under record as an away team and Brooklyn has a 9-11-1 O/U record at home. Also, the Under has cashed a lot in recent meetings; the Under is 9-4-1 in the last 14 meetings in Brooklyn.
