Broncos LB Alex Singleton out for season with torn ACL

Broncos LB Alex Singleton will miss the rest of the 2024 season after tearing his ACL against the Bucs.

Denver Broncos starting inside linebacker Alex Singleton will miss the rest of the 2024 season after tearing his ACL against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3, coach Sean Payton announced Wednesday.

Singleton tore his ACL during safety Brandon Jones’ interception eturn in the first quarter. The linebacker continued to play through the injury and did not find out about the severity of the injury until after the game when he reported soreness.

“[H]e played two-thirds of the game with — it was kind of remarkable,” Payton said. “Then he reported [that] he felt a little soreness. They looked at it, we looked at it some more, and then sure enough he’ll be scheduled for surgery probably about two weeks from now.

Singleton, 30, totaled 10 tackles in Tampa. He recorded 31 tackles and one interception through Denver’s first three games of the season.

The Broncos have three remaining inside linebackers on their active roster in Cody Barton, Kristian Welch and Justin Strnad. Denver also has rookie Levelle Bailey on the practice squad and the team just signed linebacker Kwon Alexander to the practice squad on Wednesday. The Broncos are also expected to sign linebacker Zach Cunningham to the practice squad.

Broncos have their first weekly award winner of 2024 season

Broncos kicker Wil Lutz has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week following the team’s 26-7 victory over the Bucs in Week 3.

Denver Broncos kicker Wil Lutz has been named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week following the team’s 26-7 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Week 3, the NFL announced Wednesday.

Lutz, 30, went 4-of-4 on field goal attempts and 2-of-2 on extra points attempts in Week 3, accounting for 14 of the team’s points against the Bucs. This marks the fifth weekly award of Lutz’s career and the first time a Broncos player has taken home such an honor this season.

Lutz was named the AFC Special Teams Player of the Month in November 2023, but his STPOFW award is the first for a Denver kicker since Brandon McManus took home the honors in 2021 (Week 14).

Lutz is the fourth kicker in Broncos history to have won the award, joining McManus (twice), Matt Prater (five times) and Jason Elam (seven times).

Lutz is 39-of-43 on field goal attempts since the Broncos acquired the kicker via trade with the New Orleans Saints last summer.

Ex-Broncos third-round draft pick works out for Cardinals

The Cardinals worked out McTelvin Agim, the Falcons signed Elijah Wilkinson and the Lions promoted Tim Patrick to the active roster today.

The Arizona Cardinals brought in former Denver Broncos defensive lineman McTelvin Agim for a workout on Tuesday, according to KPRC-TV’s Aaron Wilson.

Agim (6-3, 300 pounds) was picked by the Broncos in the third round of the 2020 NFL draft out of Arkansas. He recorded eight tackles in ten games as a rookie and four tackles and 1.5 sacks in seven games in 2021. After failing to make the team’s 53-man roster in 2022, he spent most of that season on the practice squad before being released in December.

Since being cut by the Broncos, the 26-year-old Agim has spent time with the Houston Texans and Indianapolis Colts. He played in one game with the Colts last fall, recording two tackles.

Elsewhere on the ex-Denver player front, the Atlanta Falcons signed former Broncos lineman Elijah Wilkinson to their active roster on Tuesday and the Detroit Lions promoted wide receiver Tim Patrick from the practice squad to their 53-man roster ahead of Week 4.

Broncos host ex-Pro Bowl linebacker for workout

The Broncos brought in former Pro Bowl linebacker Kwon Alexander for a workout on Tuesday.

Story update: The Broncos are signing linebacker Kwon Alexander to their practice squad. See our original post below.

The Denver Broncos brought in former Pro Bowl linebacker Kwon Alexander for a workout on Tuesday, according to the NFL’s transaction wire (via Mike Klis and Aaron Wilson).

Alexander (6-1, 227 pounds) entered the league as a fourth-round pick out of LSU with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2015. He spent the first four years of his career in Tampa. Alexander made PFWA’s All-Rookie Team in 2015, led the NFL in solo tackles in 2016 and made the Pro Bowl in 2017.

He then spent two seasons with the San Francisco 49ers before joining the New Orleans Saints (coached by Sean Payton at the time) in 2020. After two years in New Orleans, Alexander had stints with the New York Jets (2022) and Pittsburgh Steelers (2023).

Denver seems to be looking for more competition for linebacker Cody Barton. The Broncos signed Kristian Welch in late August and he started over Barton in Week 2 but it seems that he failed to impress because Welch was limited to special teams snaps in Week 3.

Alexander, 30, has totaled 631 tackles, 34 pass breakups, 13.5 sacks, 12 forced fumbles and nine interceptions in 104 career games (88 starts). He played nine games with the Steelers last fall before tearing his Achilles in November.

If he joins a team this fall, 2024 will mark Alexander’s 10th season in the NFL. Denver has an open spot on the practice squad after promoting wide receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey to the 53-man roster on Saturday.

NFL fined P.J. Locke (twice) for sequence that upset Sean Payton

P.J. Locke got an earful from Sean Payton after he was penalized and slammed his helmet in Week 2. Now the NFL has fined the safety.

Denver Broncos safety P.J. Locke’s hit on Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III in Week 2 proved to be a costly play.

Locke was penalized for unnecessary roughness after his hit on a defenseless receiver, then the safety slammed his helmet on the ground in frustration. After the penalty and outburst, Locke got an earful from Broncos coach Sean Payton on the sideline.

Now the NFL’s also letting him hear it in the form of fines.

Yes, plural fines — Locke was fined $13,972 for the hit (unnecessary roughness) and another $13,972 for removing his helmet (unsportsmanlike conduct), according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.

That’s a total of $27,944 worth of fines for Locke in Week 2.

Broncos center Luke Wattenberg was also fined $5,872 for a blindside block against the Steelers, an unnecessary roughness offense that was not penalized during the game. The NFL handed down that fine after reviewing Sunday’s film.

Last week, Denver safety Brandon Jones was fined $11,255 for unnecessary roughness and pass rusher Nik Bonitto was fined $8,791 for a roughing the passer penalty. Through two games this season, Broncos players have been fined a total of $53,862.
