Notre Dame Week 11 highlight — pick-six seals the deal

Notre Dame’s Luke Talich put a bow on this one.

No. 10 Notre Dame appeared to be cruising to a 45-3 win over the Florida State Seminoles when [autotag]Luke Talich[/autotag] decided that the margin of victory just wasn’t enough.

The Fighting Irish safety stepped in front of a [autotag]Brock Glenn[/autotag] pass and returned it 79 yards for a touchdown.

The struggling Seminoles looked like they might go punch-for-punch with the Irish early, but after a strong first drive ended in a field goal, Florida State’s offense stalled before being outright throttled by an impressive Notre Dame defense.

Impressive? Nah, make that dominant.

Talich’s pick-six put the final exclamation point on a blowout over Florida State that the Irish will point to as they try to impress the College Football Playoff committee.

Notre Dame vs. Florida State: Fourth-Quarter Analysis

A perfect end to a perfect night.

It officially became a blowout when [autotag]Marcus Freeman[/autotag] called off the dogs. But even that wasn’t enough to keep Notre Dame from continuing to dominate as a curtain call to a 52-3 victory over Florida State.

[autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] completed a 26-yard pass to Jaden Greathouse, then handed it off to [autotag]Jeremiyah Love[/autotag] for a 1-yard touchdown run.

When the Irish’s offense retook the field after another Seminoles three-and-out, which featured a [autotag]Junior Tuihalamaka[/autotag] sack, [autotag]Steve Angeli[/autotag] took over at quarterback. Even he got in on the scoring action when he threw a 7-yard touchdown pass to [autotag]Deion Colzie[/autotag].

As a final humiliation for the Seminoles, [autotag]Luke Talich[/autotag] intercepted Brock Glenn and returned the ball 79 yards for the game’s final touchdown and the first score of his collegiate career with 1:23 remaining. It was so unnecessary and yet so beautiful to see, especially with the Seminoles on the verge of scoring for the first time since the first quarter.

Irish fans were right to be cautious about this game because it had all the makings of a trap game. But the Seminoles came in with an offense that proved to be as putrid as advertised, and they now have the most losses of any preseason top-10 team.

Meanwhile, the Irish still have a College Football Playoff dream to chase. They have all the makings of a team that belongs there.

Notre Dame vs. Florida State: Third-Quarter Analysis

One quarter to go.

The third quarter has featured Notre Dame really laying the hammer down on a Florida State team that already was struggling. And it has happened on both sides of the ball, hence their 31-3 lead.

[autotag]Rylie Mills[/autotag] recorded his career-high third sack on Brock Glenn, who responded by promptly throwing an interception to [autotag]Jordan Clark[/autotag], his first with the Irish. The offense took advantage of starting at the Seminoles’ 35-yard line by reaching the end zone in six plays. That happened when [autotag]Riley Leonard[/autotag] ran for his second touchdown, this one from 6 yards out.

When the Seminoles got the ball back, Luke Kromenhoek replaced Glenn as quarterback. The result was them finally put together another decent drive, even converting on a third down. Though they advanced as far as the Irish 27, Kromenhoek was sacked twice on the final series, including on a fourth-and-12.

Though the Irish got some help with a roughing the passer call and ended up at the 6, Leonard couldn’t finish off the drive with a touchdown, either by him running it in or throwing it to a receiver. At least [autotag]Mitch Jeter[/autotag] kicked a 28-yard field goal, his first of the game.

The Irish have this game well in hand with the Seminoles presenting absolutely no threat.

Notre Dame Week 11 highlight — Jordan Clark takes it away

Notre Dame gets the ball back with enthusiasm.

No. 10 has made a statement to start the second half against Florida State.

Nickel corner [autotag]Jordan Clark[/autotag] picked off a [autotag]Brock Glenn[/autotag] as the Seminoles faced 3rd-down-and-17 at their own 36.

The pick set the Irish up with a short field with 12:38 remaining in the third quarter.

Notre Dame is looking to keep the Seminoles from getting back in the game, as the Fighting Irish lead 21-3 and are trying to pull away from the upset-minded Seminoles.

Florida State has talent but is jut 1-8. The Irish have struggled a little early, but are now looking to break things open.

Notre Dame vs. Florida State: Second-Quarter Analysis

The Irish are up with 30 minutes in the books.

(This story was updated to add new information).

[autotag]Jadarian Price[/autotag] wanted to finish what he started for Notre Dame late in the first quarter. On the first play of the second quarter, he ran for 65 yards and initially appeared to have just missed the end zone.

But a replay review confirmed Price had kept his foot in bounds, so he had a touchdown to extend the Irish’s lead over Florida State to 14-3.

There wasn’t a lot of action to speak of for a while after that, though the Irish’s defense had an interesting sequence. After [autotag]Howard Cross III[/autotag] went out with an injury, [autotag]Rylie Mills[/autotag] picked him up with back-to-back sacks on Brock Glenn to unseat Cross as the Irish’s sacks leader.

After getting close to Seminoles punter Alex Mastromanno a few times, [autotag]Adon Shuler[/autotag] got a piece of a punt, and that allowed the Irish’s offense to start a drive at midfield. It didn’t mean a thing though as the Irish never reached the red zone, and a [autotag]Mitch Jeter[/autotag] 42-yard field-goal attempt went wide left.

[autotag]Donovan Hinish[/autotag] recorded another sack on Glenn to force another Seminoles punt. The Irish had to start further back than before this time, and with time running out, they opted to go for it on a fourth-and-10 from the Seminoles 34-yard line after a timeout.

The Seminoles were flagged for having 12 men on the field, and the Irish  picked up a first down when Leonard completed a 22-yard pass to [autotag]Jordan Faison[/autotag]. Leonard took full advantage by promptly hitting [autotag]Mitchell Evans[/autotag] with a 12-yard touchdown.

The Irish are up, 21-3, at halftime. The way the Seminoles have played offense, that looks like a safe lead, but we’ll see.

Florida State freshman Brock Glenn could start the ACC title game

The Florida State Seminoles could have to go with a true freshman quarterback in the ACC title game.

The Florida State Seminoles are set to take on the Louisville Cardinals in the ACC title game in Charlotte.

Up until a couple of weeks ago, the starting quarterback was Jordan Travis. Due to an injury suffered against North Alabama, Tate Rodemaker would have to take over the starting role heading into the annual rivalry matchup against Florida.

Rodemaker would have to leave the game due to a hit by a pair of Gators defenders. He would only miss 55 seconds of the game before he would return to lead the Seminoles to victory over Florida, 24-15. He finished the game with 134 yards passing while completing 12 of 25 pass attempts.

Recent reports indicate that Rodemaker is a game-time decision with a head injury. If he is unable to go, true freshman Brock Glenn will make his first start in the conference championship.

Glenn was a four-star quarterback prospect that was originally committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes before flipping to Florida State. This season he has seen very little live-game action.

Glenn has thrown four passes and one rushing touchdown on four attempts. His first start could come against the No. 1 red zone scoring defense in the ACC.

Scouts view: Newest Ohio State verbal, 2023 quarterback Lincoln Kienholz

The Bucks found their 2023 QB #GoBucks

The Buckeyes found their 2023 answer at quarterback on Wednesday when former [autotag]Washington[/autotag] commit [autotag]Lincoln Kienholz[/autotag] made his flip to [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] official.

After the decommitment of [autotag]Brock Glenn[/autotag], [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] went into scramble mode to fill the open spot in the class, and the effort has paid off.

As a former scout for Prep RedZone, and having identified major college players as early as their eighth grade year, I love to give my input on what my scout’s eyes see from a newly committed Ohio State prospect. Here is what I saw when watching Kienholz’s Hudl tape.

Before getting into Kienholz’s performance on the field, knowing he is a three-sport star (baseball, basketball) made me very excited to break down his film. With great size at 6 feet, 3 inches and 195 pounds, he has the frame to add more than a few pounds when he arrives in Columbus and gets integrated into the weight room and training table.

Clearly, a great athlete, Kienholz’s arm is above average. It is not quite elite, but it’s pretty darn good. He shows very impressive touch on deep and intermediate throws, while his accuracy shines on his shorter attempts. Kienholz’s athleticism shows when the play breaks down, and he has to move out of the pocket. He is a very solid runner who can move the chains when needed. The footwork is impressive, squaring his shoulders to make throws on the move.

Kienholz is a winner, having won four straight state titles in football while being named the 11AA player of the year and becoming South Dakota’s all-time passing leader. Expect him to redshirt his first year in Columbus, as he adds weight and gets used to a higher competition level. The Buckeyes received a pledge from high floor quarterback, even if Kienholz’s ceiling isn’t as high as some of Day’s recent recruits.

Friday Night Notes: New QBs for Notre Dame and Florida State, Oregon eats their fill, plus more

In this edition of Friday Night Notes, Florida State and Notre Dame get commitments from QBs, Oregon loads up and Alabama has a big weekend.

USA TODAY High School Sports‘ Friday Night Notes is a weekly high school recruiting recap that looks at the latest news from around the country—from the Class of 2023 to ’24 and beyond.

Many of the best quarterbacks from the recruiting class of 2023 have already made their college commitments. However, there are still a few potential diamonds in the rough out there. This week, Florida State and Notre Dame both picked up commitments from highly ranked QB prospects.

Florida State: Brock Glenn

On Monday Florida State pulled off a recruiting coup by flipping four-star QB Brock Glenn from Ohio State. Glenn (6-foot-2, 195 pounds) is ranked No. 23 at his position and No. 12 in the state of Tennessee. As a Junior, Glenn threw for 1,576 yards, 23 touchdowns and nine picks. He committed to the Buckeyes back in late July but the Seminoles never gave up on him.

Glenn is the ninth blue-chip prospect overall for Florida State, now ranked No. 17 in this recruiting cycle – a few points behind Arkansas. Ohio State has dropped to No. 6 behind Texas.

Notre Dame: Kenny Minchey

The Fighting Irish also managed a QB flip of their own, of sorts. Last week Kenny Minchey decommitted from Pittsburgh, and it’s now clear he had Notre Dame in his sights when he made that decision. On Tuesday, Minchey announced his new commitment:

Minchey (6-foot-1, 207 pounds) is ranked No. 12 in his class at his position and No. 254 overall in the country.

While getting Minchey was big, Notre Dame still ranks No. 3 in the recruiting race, while Pitt is all the way down at No. 50.

Here’s what else is in the notebook. Let’s get to it…

Ohio State and 2023 quarterback commit part ways

OSU lost a commitment today, but one that shouldn’t be too surprising. #GoBucks

Ohio State has lost a commitment from 4-star 2023 quarterback commit Brock Glenn.

Out of Memphis, Tennessee, Glenn committed to the Buckeyes in late July of this year. He pledged himself to Ohio State not long after he was offered a scholarship and seemed to jump at the chance to be a part of the development track record of Ryan Day and the program at the position.

With the decommitment, Ohio State is now down to 19 players in the 2023 recruiting cycle after other defections that took place prior. Glenn quickly pivoted and announced a commitment to Florida State.

The news leaves the Buckeyes without a quarterback in the 2023 class, but this development doesn’t appear to be one that OSU is too upset about. Glenn has not performed well as of late and the Ohio State staff had already begun to look at other options in the class. That will continue with more urgency now.

Ohio State would appear to already be in good shape anyone for at least the next two to three years with former 5-stars Kyle McCord and Devin Brown waiting in the wings, and with another 5-star and current No. 1 overall recruit according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, Dylan Raiola, already verbally committed for 2024.

LSU quarterback target commits to Ohio State

A late push from the Buckeyes was enough to land Brock Glenn.

LSU’s search for a quarterback commit in the 2023 class will have to wait.

On Saturday, four-star Memphis quarterback [autotag]Brock Glenn[/autotag] committed to Ohio State over Florida State, Auburn, TCU and the Tigers. Despite making the final five, it wasn’t a surprise to see Glenn head elsewhere.

For a while, it seemed Glenn was destined to head to Tallahassee. After the Seminoles saw quarterback Chris Parson decommit, they received several predictions to land Glenn, who had long been connected to Auburn, where he is a legacy.

However, a late push from the Buckeyes made the difference, and the No. 335 overall player in the 2023 recruiting class will be heading to Columbus.

After missing out on quarterbacks [autotag]Arch Manning[/autotag], [autotag]Jaden Rashada[/autotag], [autotag]Dante Moore[/autotag], it’s beginning to look like the Tigers may not land a passer this cycle.

LSU looks good for the near future at the quarterback position as it has a pair of veterans in [autotag]Myles Brennan[/autotag] and [autotag]Jayden Daniels[/autotag] as well as younger players in [autotag]Garrett Nussmeier[/autotag] and [autotag]Walker Howard[/autotag].

Despite the lack of a quarterback commit, the Tigers currently have 17 prospects in the 2023 class, which ranks 10th nationally.
