Everything Ohio State head coach Ryan Day said at Big Ten media days

The Buckeye boss spoke at Big Ten media days. #GoBucks

Wednesday was [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] football head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag]’s turn at the podium to speak with the media at Big Ten media days.

There were plenty of topics the Buckeyes’ head coach talked about during his 15 minutes, including the quarterback derby, adjustments on offense, what his role will be with [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag] now calling plays and more.

Day was the final coach to speak on the day. While we may not have learned a lot, it was still good to see the head coach begin what feels like the official countdown to the season.

See the transcription of what Day said while he was speaking at the 2023 Big Ten media days below.

Michigan writer suggests Ohio State’s Brian Hartline as candidate for Northwestern

Ha ha but no thanks #GoBucks

If you didn’t know, Northwestern parted ways with head coach Pat Fitzgerald on Monday afternoon, amid a hazing scandal.

Naturally, there is going to be conjecture about who will replace Fitzgerald, and 247Sports Michigan report Steve Lorenz suggested [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag]’s new offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag].

It may have been in jest, especially considering who Lorenz covers but Steve Wiltfong, 247Sports national director of recruiting, doubled down on the idea saying that Hartline is “another great name that makes a lot of sense.”

Sorry, but it doesn’t at all. Hartline was considered for other jobs during the off-season, none of them with the challenges and uphill climb being the head coach at Northwestern brings.

There is no doubt in my mind that Hartline is a wanted man in the coaching profession, but it has to be the right situation. Northwestern isn’t that.

A massive rebuild for a school in utter turmoil just doesn’t seem like a destination that Hartline would want to go to. It’s just a silly idea from at least one respected name in the industry. I understand Lorenz trolling Ohio State fans, but Wiltfong suggesting this doesn’t have that feeling.

I highly doubt that Hartline leaves for a bottom-feeding Big Ten team program. So, even if they are trolling, they aren’t doing a good job.

Ohio State commit Jeremiah Smith hints an elite corner should be joining him

A very interesting development ahead of the weekend #GoBucks

They say that the best want to compete with the best and that gives [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] a distinct advantage over competitors regarding secondary recruiting.

If a defensive back wants to go against the best wide receivers in the country, it’s hard to argue that Columbus isn’t the place for them. Multiple first round NFL draft selections over the past few years and the ones that weren’t, i.e. [autotag]Terry McLaurin[/autotag], have blossomed into stars.

Offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag] is churning out elite wide receiver talent and enticing defensive backs to come compete against the best. Buckeye wide receiver commit [autotag]Jeremiah Smith[/autotag] is using that tactic as well, as he retweeted a post regarding Ohio cornerback [autotag]Bryce West[/autotag] making return visit to Michigan after his official.

There were rumors of a visit by West back to Ann Arbor would happen prior to his official to Columbus this weekend, but it turns out that won’t happen and Smith insinuates that West might be joining him.

This visit is big for West and another top in-state cornerback target [autotag]Aaron Scott[/autotag]. If the Buckeyes hit a home run with both of them, we could see the top remaining Ohio targets verbal to Ohio State.

Report: SEC program contender to flip Ohio State wide receiver commit Jeremiah Smith

According to a report from 247Sports, one SEC school could be a contender to flip the No. 1 receiver in the2024 class from Ohio State.

In December, when Florida wide receiver Jeremiah Smith committed to [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag], it was another impressive recruiting win for then wide receiver coach [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag].

Fast forward to the middle of May and Smith has scheduled multiple official visits aside from his trip to Columbus. The No. 1 wide receiver in the country, and second overall player on the 247Sports composite, also plans to visit Georgia and Florida.

Just one of those schools, the Bulldogs, believes they are a legit threat to flip the star receiver according to a 247Sports report that quotes their director of recruiting Steve Wiltfong.

Wiltfong states the relationship between Smith and former Buckeye quarterback commit Dylan Raiola, who is leaning toward committing to the Bulldogs, “puts Georgia as the biggest threat to flip.”

The report stated it’s going to be “tough to flip a receiver from Ohio State,” due to Hartline and the way he recruits not just the player but the family as well.

Personally, I agree with this statement, as Smith has been one of the biggest recruiters for the Buckeyes on Twitter. He would play for arguably the best position coach in the country at developing talent and sending them to the NFL. Not to mention the offense that head coach [autotag]Ryan Day[/autotag] runs isn’t afraid to air it out unlike Georgia’s.

It is worth monitoring what Smith says or doesn’t say leading up to and following his two other visits. Like with most Florida recruits, this one isn’t over until the national letter of intent is received.

Brian Hartline on what makes Seahawks WR Jaxon Smith-Njigba special

Nobody would know better what Smith-Njigba brings to the table than Hartline.

Brian Hartline played WR for the Dolphins during the Seahawks’ peak Legion of Boom days. However, since 2018 he’s served as the wide receivers coach at Ohio State, where they’ve been pumping out more pro wideouts than any other Power 5 program in recent years.

The latest big name to emerge from the Buckeyes’ receiver factory is Jaxon Smith-Njigba, who somehow fell to the Seahawks at No. 20 overall in the 2023 NFL draft. Smith-Njigba is our favorite pick in the class and fits exactly what Seattle was missing at the position.

Nobody would know better what Smith-Njigba brings to the table than Hartline. Here’s what he said about JSN’s game, per Mike Dugar at the Athletic.

“The tempo in which he changes directions is very special… Special meaning that I don’t see a whole lot of guys that do that. His catch-to-run mechanics, his ability to catch the ball and transition to a ball carrier is very uncommon. He does it at a very high level. That also plays into his overall speed and the way he plays the game.”

That ability to change directions helps Smith-Njigba simply get open a high-level trait that has earned him lofty comparisons to Yakima’s Cooper Kupp, who won Super Bowl MVP a couple seasons ago with the Rams.

As far as the numbers go, Smith-Njigba only had one great year in college, but it was a dominant one. In 2021 he dropped 95 catches, 1,606 receiving yards and nine touchdowns.

It’s unlikely Smith-Njigba will approach those numbers in the pros – considering he’ll have to share targets with Tyler Lockett and DK Metcalf. Then again, Smith-Njigba fits snugly between those two in many ways. At 6-foot-0, 197 pounds he’s got Lockett’s elusiveness and short-area quickness along with some of Metcalf’s length and straight speed. JSN also thrives from the slot – something neither Lockett or Metcalf are known for. There’s a lot of hearty portions to be had at that WR3 spot, especially for someone with this skillset.

Together, this group has been ranked the second-best receiver unit in the NFL by Mike Clay at ESPN.

Ohio State sees a wide receiver enter the transfer portal

Best of luck young man! #GoBucks

There isn’t a harder room to be a contributor in college football than [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag]’s wide receiver room.

Offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag] has developed and recruited at an insanely high level with no end in sight. Our current projected two-deep depth chart is missing [autotag]Caleb Burton[/autotag], so the news of him entering the transfer portal shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

Burton couldn’t get on the field even though he was the No. 21 best receiver and 132nd overall player in the 2022 class according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

It’s unfortunate but this is a price that is paid for being one of the deepest position groups in all of college football. We wish Caleb nothing but the best at his next playing destination.

‘Tis transfer portal season and Ohio State still has is still over the magical 85 scholarship limit number, so we’ll continue to keep our heads on a swivel as anything else develops.

Update: Ohio State offensive coordinator Brian Hartline involved in an ATV accident

Wishing coach Hartline the best! #GoBucks

The day after [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag]’s spring football calendar came to an end with the annual spring game, offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag] was involved in an accident.

Fortunately for the former wide receiver, it seems as though it was nothing major: He tweeted that he is in good shape. It most likely was a scary moment, as it has been reported he crashed his ATV on his home property.

Hartline was taken to the hospital for further evaluation, which hopefully is just a precautionary measure after an accident of that caliber. Not many details are available on how the accident occurred, but any time you operate any sort of vehicle, there is a risk.

UPDATE April 17: According to the Columbus Dispatch, which was quoting the report from Delaware County Sheriff’s Office. Hartline has admitted to drinking on the night of the crash.

Former Dolphins WR Brian Hartline taken to hospital after ATV crash

The injuries are non-life-threatening, and he says he’s doing well.

Early Sunday morning former Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brian Hardline was brought to a local hospital in Ohio following an ATV accident on his property.

According to the Delaware County (Ohio) Sheriff’s Office, the crash took place around 1:20 a.m.

ESPN shared a statement from Ohio State, where Hartline is currently the offensive coordinator:

“Ohio State assistant football coach Brian Hartline and a friend, unaffiliated with Ohio State, were transported to Riverside Hospital early this morning with non-life threatening injuries sustained in an ATV accident on his property. According to Hartline, he is hoping to be released from the hospital later this evening.”

The former wideout then provided an update of his own on social media, thanking everyone for their well wishes.

Hartline, 36, was selected by the Dolphins in the fourth round of the 2009 draft. He spent six seasons with Miami, recording 298 receptions for 4,243 yards and 12 touchdowns. He played one final year for the Cleveland Browns in 2015 before moving to coaching in 2017.

Watch: Ohio State quarterback signee shows he could join Zone 6 as well

The Buckeyes are getting a phenomenal athlete #GoBucks

The hype train for [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] quarterback signee Lincoln Kienholz is boarding, and tickets are being sold fast.

The South Dakota three-sport star has finished his basketball season, for which he was named an All-State first-team player at guard for the second year in a row. He is currently playing baseball. That hasn’t stopped him from preparing for his career with the Buckeyes although not just as a quarterback.

In a clip he shared on Twitter and tagged offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag] and quarterback coach [autotag]Corey Dennis[/autotag], Kienholz jumps, turns his body in mid-air and catches a pass with one hand on a throw behind him.

It’s safe to say Kienholz is a fantastic athlete, one whose skills will be used at the next level even if it’s throwing the passes and not catching them.

You can bet the Ohio State coaching staff can’t wait to get Kienholz on campus.

Ohio State’s Brian Hartline names his top 5 wide receivers he’s coached

WRU? You bet #GoBucks

Although [autotag]Ohio State[/autotag] offensive coordinator [autotag]Brian Hartline[/autotag] has not been in the coaching profession long, his list of successful players is.

Prior to his elevation as offensive coordinator, Hartline has had multiple wide receivers get drafted into the NFL early and go on to have or begin to have very good careers.

Recently, Hartline joined the podcast “Bussin’ With the Boys” hosted by NFL players Will Compton and Taylor Lewan. This was the second time that the Ohio State coach joined the podcast, so the familiarity between the three of them has grown.

Compton and Lewan asked Hartline to list his top five wide receiver talents he’s coached, and this is the list he gave them.
