The Seattle Seahawks were fortunate to have their starting right tackle, Brandon Shell, in the lineup in Week 14 against the New York Jets, but the reunion didn’t last long.

Shell left the game, limped to the locker room and was then ruled out for the remainder of the matchup with an ankle injury. He was replaced by Chad Wheeler, who was just signed off the practice squad this week.

“He tweaked it a couple times and then it was just one too many times,” coach Pete Carroll said of Shell after the win. “It was really studly of him just to go out and play. It’s going to be a touch and go week – I don’t know what’s going to happen this week and next weekend coming up.”

Shell had recently recovered from the high-ankle sprain he sustained in the Thursday night contest against the Cardinals in November, causing him to miss the last two games.

“I was really proud of him for playing this game,” Carroll continued. “He’s got a smile on his face but he’s going to be pretty sore tomorrow.”

Week 14 keys to victory: New York Jets at Seattle Seahawks

The Week 14 keys to victory for both the Seattle Seahawks and the New York Jets when they face off Sunday at Lumen Field.

The Seattle Seahawks are set to host the New York Jets in Week 14 at Lumen Field. Here are the keys to victory for both teams.

Jets’ keys to victory

The winless New York Jets will be continuing their campaign for the league’s top 2021 NFL draft pick when they head to Seattle to face the Seahawks in Week 14. Despite almost sneaking by the Raiders to nearly everyone’s surprise, the Jets still have a lot to do to earn their first victory this year.

While New York’s offense may seriously be challenged by the Seahawks on Sunday, the Jets’ defense will be up against a very questionable offensive line in Seattle if right tackle Brandon Shell isn’t back in the linehup. If New York wants a chance against QB Russell Wilson, testing his protectors may be the best game plan for the Jets in the Emerald City.

The Jets also know exactly what to expect from one member of Seattle’s secondary . . . more on him later.

Seahawks right tackle Brandon Shell ready to go against Jets

After missing the last two weeks due to an ankle injury, Seattle Seahawks right tackle Brandon Shell ready to go against the New York Jets.

The Seattle Seahawks will see the return of their starting right tackle, Brandon Shell, just in time for him to face his former teammates, the New York Jets.

Shell, who has sat out since Week 12 with an ankle injury, is ready to play on Sunday.

“He had a full week of practice and he did really well,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters after Friday’s walkthrough. “He’s ready to go and really no hesitation there.”

Carroll said Shell has been a valuable addition to Seattle’s roster and it was important for him to get the chance to face off against his previous team.

“He’s just been a real positive, solid as a rock,” Carroll said. “Unfortunately he missed a couple of games here but every way, running game, pass game, he’s really been a great acquisition for us and he filled the spot and we’re real excited about him.”

The Seahawks and Jets are set to kick off at 1:05 p.m PT on Sunday.

Seahawks RT Brandon Shell has good chance to practice this week

Seattle Seahawks starting right tackle Brandon Shell has a good chance to practice this week after recovering from a high ankle sprain.

The Seattle Seahawks were hurting at right tackle in Sunday’s loss to the New York Giants, to say the least, but one injured lineman could be close to returning.

Brandon Shell, who has missed the last couple of contests battling an ankle injury, is on the mend.

“Brandon Shell should be getting real close, he’s steadily improving,” coach Pete Carroll said during his Monday interview on 710 ESPN Seattle. “He wasn’t well enough to play but he has a good chance to practice some this week. It will probably take us all the way to the end of the week to know.

“I know playing against the Jets (his former team), he really wants to get in this game so he’ll do everything he can.”

With tackle Cedric Ogbuehi inactive against the Giants, backup right guard Jamarco Jones got the start at RT on Sunday until he too suffered an injury (groin pull) and had to leave the game. Chad Wheeler came in off the bench as Jones’ replacement.

Getting Shell back in the lineup would be key for Seattle to close out the regular season.

Seahawks list three as doubtful, four as questionable vs. Giants

The Seattle Seahawks have listed three players as doubtful and four as questionable, including Carlos Dunlap, against the New York Giants.

The New York Giants will likely be without quarterback Daniel Jones in Seattle after he was listed as doubtful to play on Sunday, but they’re certainly not the only team dealing with injury woes.

The Seahawks released their official injury report on Friday night and listed three as doubtful and four as questionable.

Among those unlikely to play in Week 13 are starting cornerback Tre Flowers (hamstring) and starting right tackle Brandon Shell (ankle). Their primary kick returner, Travis Homer, is listed as doubtful with wrist, thumb and knee injuries.

All three players sat out of practice this week.

Meanwhile, the Seahawks also listed defensive Carlos Dunlap as questionable with a foot injury. He, too, did not practice at all this week.

Offensive lineman Kyle Kuller (ankle), running back Carlos Hyde (toe) and guard Damien Lewis (groin) are also listed questionable.

Fuller was a late addition to the injury report and did not practice on Friday. Hyde had been added on Thursday but did see limited participation on Friday. Lewis was limited all week.

Pete Carroll updates Seahawks injury situation ahead of Giants contest

Coach Pete Carroll provided a number of player injury updates on Friday ahead of the Week 13 contest between the Seahawks and the Giants.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll provided a number of injury updates ahead of the Week 13 contest between Seattle and the New York Giants.

While no players were officially ruled out on the injury report, three were listed as doubtful to play: cornerback Tre Flowers, running back Travis Homer and OT Brandon Shell.

“He came out of the game with his hamstring tight, did the MRI and he’s got something that we have to deal with,” Carroll said of Flowers. “It’s not a serious hamstring injury, but it’s enough to really bother him this week, and to expect for him to turn around and bounce back around this week is a lot to expect. We’ll see what happens. We’ll take him all the way up to the weekend.”

As for Shell, he’s not likely to play either, although he has made some improvement with his ankle injury.

“Brandon kind of made a turn where he’s really starting to move now,” Carroll told reporters Friday. “It would be a surprise if he can play on this weekend, but he’s getting real close. I would think he has really turned the corner to get well here.”

There is some potentially good news for the defensive line, however, as Carlos Dunlap is questionable for Sunday despite not having practiced this week.

“We’ll find out about Carlos Dunlap here at the end of the week,” Carroll said. “He was pretty bright-eyed about it today. We’ll see what happens.”

Here’s a look at the complete injury report from Friday.

Pete Carroll updates Seahawks’ injuries after Week-11 victory

Coach Pete Carroll provided a number of updates to the Seattle Seahawks’ injuries after the Week-11 victory over the Arizona Cardinals.

The Seattle Seahawks are back on top of the NFC West after beating the Arizona Cardinals Thursday night on the national stage. While the Seahawks have slowly been getting healthier, they did suffer a number of new injuries Week 11.

Pete Carroll provided a number of player updates following the win.

Tight end Greg Olsen (foot): “It’s a little early but he has a fascia tear injury that he’s had before in his other foot,” Carroll said Thursday night. “He knows exactly what it is. And sometimes when it ruptures like it did, we think, it’s the best thing for a quick recovery. So we’ll see what happens and wish him the best and hopefully, he can make it back.”

Carroll did have some new information during his Friday morning press conference, relaying that it could be a four-six week recovery for Olsen based on the type of injury he sustained.

Tackle Brandon Shell (ankle): Shell left the game in the fourth quarter after injuring his ankle. Carroll confirmed it is a sprain but he’s not yet certain of the extent of the injury.

Running back Bo Scarbrough (hamstring): Scarbrough was also injured Thursday night when he ended up in the splits after a tackle. He left the matchup to be evaluated in the medical tent and did not return. Carroll said on Friday there’s a chance he could be laid up for a bit.

Fortunately for the Seahawks, they have a sort of mini bye with their next game not scheduled until Nov. 30 against the Eagles for “Monday Night Football.” The extra days off are much-needed for a squad trying to get healthy for the push for the playoffs.

The good, the bad, and the ugly from Seahawks’ win over Cardinals

The Seattle Seahawks won their rematch against the Arizona Cardinals, 28-21, on Thursday night and reclaimed first place in the NFC West.

The Seattle Seahawks are back in first place in the NFC West after defeating the Arizona Cardinals, 28-21, at the newly-renamed Lumen Field in Seattle on “Thursday Night Football.” Seattle held the lead the entire time, but Kyler Murray and the Cardinals kept things uncomfortably close for much of those 60 minutes. Here are the standout good, bad, and ugly takeaways from the Seahawks’ seventh win of the season:

THE GOOD

Carlos Dunlap: Acquiring Dunlap from the Bengals was a masterstroke from GM John Schneider, as the explosive defensive end has taken the Seahawks’ struggling pass rush to new heights since his arrival. Dunlap was an absolute terror in the backfield with three QB hits and two sacks, including the game-sealing takedown on 4th and 10 at Seattle’s 27. The consistent pressure he generated often threw Kyler Murray off of his game, forcing the Cardinals QB to either run for his life or throw the ball away for no gain. Dunlap should feast against the Eagles’ offensive line in 11 days’ time on “Monday Night Football.”

The defense: Seattle’s defensive unit looked like an entirely different squad on Thursday, holding Arizona’s potent offense to 317 yards (their second-lowest total of the season). The Cardinals’ running game was effectively shut down against a strong front seven, only accumulating 57 yards, while star receiver DeAndre Hopkins posted just 51 yards on five catches. The Seahawks set the tone from Arizona’s very first drive, forcing a quick three-and-out, and were able to repeat that performance on the Cards’ second drive. Seattle’s defensive line also forced a holding call in the end zone, leading to a rare safety (and Seahawks ball) with a four-point lead and 9:12 left in the fourth quarter.

Ex-Jets linemen celebrate 2-0 records with subtle jab at former team

Both Kelvin Beachum and Brandon Shell have gotten off to respective 2-0 starts, take subtle jabs at the 0-2 Jets on Instagram.

Kelvin Beachum and Brandon Shell are now 2-0 on their respective teams. Last year, as members of the Jets, they had an inverse record at this point in the season. They would again in 2020 if still playing for New York.

Beachum and Shell are both starting at right tackle for the Cardinals and Seahawks, respectively. After experiencing some miserable seasons in green and white, the former Jets linemen appear to be relieved that they’re now on winning clubs.

Shell commented on Beachum’s Instagram post on Monday, writing, “2-0 feels good huh.” Beachum responded by saying that he’s trying hard not to petty, but included multiple laughing emojis.

It’s clear that the two’s tongue-in-cheek remarks come at the expense of the Jets. Who can blame them? The offensive line was made to be the scapegoat of New York’s miscues in 2019, but the past two games show that the Jets’ offensive woes go way beyond the play in the trenches.

Neither Beachum nor Shell were sought back by the Jets this past offseason. Shell endured a rocky 2019, so a change of scenery was certainly his best option going forward. As for Beachum, he was a solid presence on the left side of the offensive line and would’ve been a great mentor for Mekhi Becton while serving as a more than capable depth piece. However, he got an opportunity to start in Arizona, something that wouldn’t have been afforded to him in New York.

Beachum and Shell both get a chance to face off against Gang Green later this season. Time will tell, but it’s not looking too promising for the Jets’ chances of getting the last laugh.

Jets’ starting offensive line will have 100% turnover in 2020

With Brian Winters bound for Buffalo, the New York Jets starting offensive line will be completely turned over from the season before.

By releasing Brian Winters on Sunday, the Jets committed to their starting lineup having a 100 percent turnover in 2020.

In 2019, New York’s Week 1 starting offensive line consisted of Kelvin Beachum and Kelechi Osemele on the left side, Ryan Kalil in the middle, and Winters and Brandon Shell filling out the right side.

Behind an offensive line that had little chemistry, the Jets offense sputtered. In Adam Gase’s first season as head coach, New York’s offensive unit ranked 31st in points per game, 32nd in yards per game and 32nd in yards per play.

The Jets averaged just 0.7 rushing yards before contact per attempt, which was dead last in the NFL, according to Pro Football Focus. Also, New York allowed pressure in 2.5 seconds or less on 27.5 percent of its dropbacks, which was the second-highest in the league.

This was a large part of why Sam Darnold had little to no time to make plays happen. Jets quarterbacks were sacked 52 times in 2019, which was the fourth-highest mark in the league.

Joe Douglas made it his pet project this offseason to rebuild the Jets offensive line. He spent all offseason plugging holes in the trenches to ensure that Darnold and the offense can experience heightened success in 2020 and beyond.

The Jets showed no interest in bringing back members of last year’s starting lineup. Beachum and Shell signed one-year pacts with the Cardinals and Seahawks, respectively. Osemele, who played just three games with Gang Green before he was released due to an injury dispute, signed a one-year deal with the Chiefs. Kalil is likely to choose retirement again after the Jets talked him out of it last year and got poor results.

Douglas’ first order of business was signing swing tackle George Fant to a three-year, $30 million contract. Right now, Fant is penciled in as the opening day starter at right tackle. Staying on the right side, Greg Van Roten signed a three-year, $10.5 million deal and will slide in at right guard in Winters’ absence.

Shaping things up in the middle, Douglas signed Connor McGovern to a three-year, $27 million deal. He will be New York’s starter at center. Alex Lewis, who did an admirable job filling in for Osemele, is now assured a starting spot at left guard with Winters gone. As for left tackle, it’s now stationed by Mekhi Becton, New York’s first-round pick out of Lousiville.

While the Jets offensive line will yet again need to work on its chemistry, a roster turnover was necessary considering how the offense plateaued behind such a lackluster unit in 2019.
