Broncos chose to sign right tackle Billy Turner over Brandon Shell

Billy Turner spent the last three years playing in Nathaniel Hackett’s offense, likely giving him an edge over Brandon Shell.

The Denver Broncos brought in former Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Brandon Shell for a free agent visit earlier this week, sparking speculation that he might be the team’s short-term fix at right tackle. ESPN even reported that Shell was poised to sign with the team.

It was a bit of a surprise, then, when the Broncos agreed to terms with Billy Turner on a one-year deal on Thursday evening.

So, what happened?

Apparently, Turner had an under-the-radar visit in Denver last week before Shell, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Turner spent the last three seasons with the Green Bay Packers under new Broncos coach Nathaniel Hackett and offensive coordinator Justin Outten.

Klis believes Turner’s familiarity with Denver’s offensive scheme was likely the deciding factor in the Broncos’ decision to sign him over Shell.

Turner played in Denver from 2016-2018, primarily as a backup swing guard/tackle. He was a fill-in starter at right tackle for four games in 2018 and a fill-in starter for seven games at left guard that season.

Turner has played every position on the offensive line except center, and that versatility could prove to be valuable for the Broncos. He started 13 games at right tackle for the Packers last year and has started 68 games in his career.

Turner was penalized three times and allowed three sacks in 2021.

Denver previously signed Calvin Anderson and Tom Compton to one-year contracts. Turner now becomes a third option in the mix at right tackle, and given his experience and familiarity with the offense, he will likely be the favorite to win the starting job.

Even after bringing in Turner, the Broncos might still consider adding a long-term right tackle prospect in the NFL draft next month.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll admits OT position is a real concern

Carroll also admitted yesterday that this position is a spot that’s really of concern.

The Seahawks tried their best to sign gargantuan offensive tackle Trent Brown, who we had identified as the top free agent target for Seattle this offseason. Unfortunately, Brown never wanted to leave New England and agreed to re-sign with the Patriots on Monday after getting wooed by Seattle all weekend. Coach Pete Carroll told KJR radio yesterday that the team didn’t get too far on that front.

That leaves the Seahawks in a bad position at OT. Both left tackle Duane Brown and right tackle Brandon Shell are free agents and getting plenty of interest on the open market. Carolina is reportedly pursuing Brown, while Denver is recruiting Shell. Carroll also admitted yesterday that this position is a spot that’s really of concern.

All of the other notable free agent OTs are also off the board. La’El Collins signed a huge three-year deal with the Bengals and Terron Armstead got a big five-year contract from the Dolphins.

The Seahawks also don’t have much salary cap room left to fill those holes. According to Over the Cap, they have $16.5 million remaining.

The plan may be to address these positions in the 2022 NFL draft, which is supposed to be deep at OT.

Extra days could benefit Brandon Shell in return from shoulder injury

The extra days ahead of the delayed Week-15 matchup between the Seahawks and the Rams could help Seattle T Brandon Shell return from injury.

The Seattle Seahawks are looking to capitalize on the couple of extra days to prepare before facing the Rams in Los Angeles Week 15. Because of the large number of Rams on the COVID-19 list, the league opted to move the matchup from Sunday afternoon to Tuesday evening.

The additional time could actually help some players who are hoping to return from injuries, including right tackle Brandon Shell, who has sat out practice all week still battling a shoulder injury.

“The days will help him, a couple more days will help him,” Carroll said Friday after the schedule change was announced. “I can’t tell you about game day stuff or anything like that, we don’t know. Anybody that’s banged up, it’s going to help them. Both teams I’m sure.”

While practice participation statuses were announced following Friday’s walkthrough, gameday designations were not required yet since the contest has been delayed. We should know more about Shell’s chances of playing on Tuesday when the final injury report is released.

Seahawks’ injury updates following win over 49ers Week 13

Coach Pete Carroll provided a number of player injury updates following the team’s win over the San Francisco 49ers in Week 13.

The Seattle Seahawks came away with a thrilling victory on Sunday, beating their rival San Francisco 49ers in front of the home crowd. Following the win, coach Pete Carroll provided a number of player injury updates.

Safety Jamal Adams left the game early and was unable to return. He remained on the sidelines in street clothes for the remainder of the matchup. “He sprained his shoulder today, the one that was operated on (after last season),” Carroll told reporters. “I don’t know any updates other than that.”

Tackle Brandon Shell also left the contest early with a shoulder injury. “Brandon Shell, it’s the same shoulder that was bothering him, just aggravated again,” Carroll explained. “Not a whole lot worse than it was last week, but he didn’t finish last week either.”

Fellow offensive lineman, guard Kyle Fuller, sustained an ankle injury. “He sprained his ankle,” Carroll said. “I don’t know any update on that either.”

Defensive tackle Bryan Mone, who banged up his knee, was ultimately able to return to the game. “Mone had a knee injury, he put a brace on and was OK to go back,” Carroll confirmed. “Toughed that out for sure.”

Carroll should have additional injury updates by his scheduled Monday afternoon press conference.

A look at Seahawks’ injuries after loss to Cardinals in Week 11

Coach Pete Carroll provided a number of player injury updates following the team’s loss to the Arizona Cardinals in Week 11.

The Seattle Seahawks suffered a number of new injuries during their Week 11 loss to the Arizona Cardinals at Lumen Field. Coach Pete Carroll provided some updates during his postgame press conference.

Cornerback Tre Brown left the matchup early with what could turn out to be a significant injury. “He has a patellar tendon injury, and those are pretty tough,” Carroll told reporters. Carroll would not confirm whether or not the injury would be season-ending for the rookie.

Running back Rashaad Penny also left the contest early after suffering a hamstring injury. “Something in his hammy, he felt it,” Carroll explained. “We spent the rest of the first half trying to keep him warm to see if he pulled his hamstring or felt something. He kind of felt okay and got close to getting back out there, but it wasn’t quite right . . .”

Carroll also noted that linebacker Jordyn Brooks has “a hip thing that’s bothering him” and tackle Brandon Shell has a sore shoulder.

Carroll should have additional updates when he addresses the media Monday afternoon.

A closer look at Seahawks’ injuries ahead of 49ers matchup Week 4

Coach Pete Carroll provided a number of Seattle Seahawks injury updates ahead of the Week 4 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers.

The Seattle Seahawks ruled out a couple of players ahead of the Sunday matchup against the San Francisco 49ers – right tackle Brandon Shell (ankle) and running back Rashaad Penny (calf) – as neither player was able to return to practice this week.

In addition, rookie wide receiver Dee Eskridge is doubtful to square off against the division rivals.

“I’m not sure he’s going to make it, we have to wait and see what happens tomorrow,” coach Pete Carroll told reporters after the walkthrough on Friday. “We are still talking about it. He passed the protocol on Wednesday. He sat out Wednesday to do that, had a really good day yesterday at practice, but we don’t know if it is right to bring him back yet.”

There is also a slim chance Seattle could be down another wide receiver for the Week 4 contest. Starter Tyler Lockett was deemed questionable to play with a hip injury.

He practiced today,” Carroll said. “We rested him during the week, he did a bunch of treatment, and he feels good.

Defensive ends Alton Robinson (knee) and Benson Mayowa (neck) were also listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report.
